Speaking Truth to Power? Jon Stewart Back in 2000: I'm a 'Socialist'

By Scott Whitlock | May 24, 2012 | 12:50

Roger Ailes was right. Earlier this week, the Fox News president made waves by asserting that Jon Stewart confessed to being a "socialist" while the two were in a bar once. Outlets such as Huffington Post and Mediaite reported the story as an accusation or an open question. It isn't. Appearing on CNN in the year 2000, the comic openly explained his ideology.

After a caller on the December 15, 2000 Larry King Live asked about being objective, Stewart conceded, "I think I would say I'm more of a socialist or an independent." He added, "No one would ever I think watching our show think that, boy, that guy is just leaning so far right." [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

'The Daily Show': 'TV Has Never Been Gayer'

By Noel Sheppard | May 09, 2012 | 01:31

As NewsBusters reported, Vice President Joe Biden made a stupendously stupid comment on Sunday's Meet the Press about the NBC sitcom Will and Grace doing "more to educate the American public [about homosexuality] than almost anything anybody’s ever done."

The Daily Show marvelously lampooned this issue as well as the President's "evolving" position on same-sex marriage Tuesday with John Oliver making the accurate media comment, "TV has never been gayer" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Jon Stewart Loses Delta Airlines As Sponsor Due To 'Vagina Manger' Sketch

By Noel Sheppard | May 07, 2012 | 22:45

As NewsBusters reported last month, Comedy Central's Jon Stewart did a truly vile sketch a few weeks ago displaying a Nativity scene over a woman's vagina.

According to BuzzFeed, Delta Airlines has dropped its sponsorship of the Daily Show as a result [reader discretion advised: offensive graphic displayed below page break]:

Jon Stewart Desecrates Nativity Scene to Make a Jab at Fox News

By Josh St. Louis | April 17, 2012 | 16:07

In a snarky segment aimed at mocking Fox News for dismissing the Democratic/MSNBC "war on women" meme, Jon Stewart placed a depiction of Jesus Christ's Nativity over a women’s vagina, gratuitously offending millions of Christians, not to mention non-religious folks with any shred of common decency. Jon Stewart Rips NBC’s Dishonest Zimmerman 911 Edit: ‘You Screwed Up’

By Noel Sheppard | April 10, 2012 | 15:49

Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart surprisingly took on NBC News Monday for the network’s dishonest editing of George Zimmerman’s 911 call regarding Trayvon Martin.

Less shocking, the Daily Show host also took some punches at conservatives for how they handled this story including Media Research Center president Brent Bozell (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

NBC's 'Today' Touts 'Mixed Reaction' to Palin Guest Hosting

By Kyle Drennen | April 04, 2012 | 16:41

On Wednesday's NBC Today, co-host Ann Curry informed viewers that reviews were in for Sarah Palin's Tuesday guest-hosting stint on the broadcast: "...we had a pretty interesting morning around here on Tuesday, as you may remember, with Sarah Palin as our guest host. And there's been some reaction, in fact a lot of it, in fact, has been mixed."

Later, fellow co-host Matt Lauer highlighted Palin-bashing by Daily Show host Jon Stewart, who mocked: "It's Sarah Palin co-hosting the Today show! And she was there performing a medley of her greatest hits from, 'I don't read newspapers,' to 'I write on my hand.' To that old chestnut, 'I passive aggressively hate Matt Lauer with every ounce of my being.'" After the clip, Lauer joked: "Thank you, Mr. Stewart for the cross promotion there. We really appreciate it."

Stewart went on to further slam Palin's appearance: "It's just another place for you to tout your brand of homespun nonsense unchallenged!"

Stewart Attacks Palin's 'Today' Appearance: 'Another Place for You to Tout Your Brand of Homespun Nonsense'

By Noel Sheppard | April 04, 2012 | 09:34

I don't know about you, but I thought Sarah Palin did an extremely good job in her guest-host stint on NBC's Today show Tuesday.

Comedy Central's Jon Stewart predictably didn't, and began his Daily Show later that evening with a blistering attack on the former Alaska governor (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Jon Stewart Declares Cheney Heart Transplant 'Greatest Joke Set-up Ever!'

By Josh St. Louis | March 27, 2012 | 16:31

Earlier this week NBC News did a segment questioning whether or not former Vice President Dick Cheney deserved his recent heart transplant. Others in the media, including Comedy Central's Jon Stewart, have jumped on the chance to poke a jab or two at the former Vice President and his surgery.

A heart transplant is a serious subject, affecting over 5,000 patients who receive transplants worldwide each year. It's certainly not a laughing matter to patients who receive them or their friends and loved ones. [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Daily Show Mocks 'Cheney's Old Heart': Warn Your Children 'Not to Get Into a Car' With It

By Noel Sheppard | March 27, 2012 | 07:33

Comedy Central's Daily Show took the news of Dick Cheney's heart transplant as another opportunity to attack the former Vice President.

On Monday, whoever is responsible for the show's Twitter account posted a series of supposedly comical messages about the recovering patient including "Please warn your children not to accept candy from or get into a car with #CheneysOldHeart":

Jon Stewart Mocks Megyn Kelly: Contraceptive Coverage Same as Paid Maternity Leave

By Noel Sheppard | March 06, 2012 | 10:11

Of all the pathetic media defenses of Georgetown University law student and women’s rights activist Sandra Fluke, Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart on Monday might have mounted the silliest one.

During a lengthy segment about “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Gross” Rush Limbaugh, the Daily Show host also went after Fox News’s Megyn Kelly by hysterically claiming institutions paying for contraceptives is the same as employers paying for maternity leave (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Jon Stewart: Fox News Reporting Debt, Unemployment and High Gas Prices Is a GOP Conspiracy

By Noel Sheppard | February 29, 2012 | 12:08

Comedian Jon Stewart apparently thinks the economy is just fine and that any news outlet that says otherwise must be doing it because they don't want President Obama to get reelected.

Even more preposterous, on Tuesday's Daily Show, the host did an entire segment on how Fox News reporting the national debt, unemployment, and rising gas prices is all a Republican National Committee conspiracy (video follows with highlights and commentary):

CBS Touts Daily Show Likening Santorum, Conservatism to Crack

By Matthew Balan | February 24, 2012 | 16:10

CBS This Morning on Friday boosted left-wing comedian John Oliver's smear on Rick Santorum, and conservatism in general, where he equated the GOP presidential candidate with a hardcore drug like crack cocaine: "America likes its conservatism cut with plenty of baking powder because one hit of the pure stuff, and you'll wake up with Eric Stoltz...having just plunged an adrenaline needle into your heart."

Anchor Charlie Rose praised the offensive crack, which aired on Thursday's Daily Show: "Don't you love John Oliver?" Erica Hill agreed with her co-anchor, and added, "Always gives us a good laugh. We like that." Later that morning, a post on the far-left website Daily Kos praised Oliver's entire rant as "brilliant," as it supposedly "tells the truth about what the GOP really wants to do" [audio available here; video below the jump].

'Obamas' Author Rips Soledad O'Brien: 'By Her Logic We Wouldn't Write Obituaries Because We Can't Talk to the Dead People'

By Noel Sheppard | January 17, 2012 | 09:46

As NewsBusters reported Friday, CNN's Soledad O'Brien had a completely unprofessional interview with "The Obamas" author Jodi Kantor wherein she mercilessly grilled the writer for having the nerve to criticize the first lady in her book.

Kantor struck back on Monday's Daily Show saying, "By her logic we wouldn't write obituaries because we can't talk to the dead people" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Star Wars creator George Lucas said Monday that Hollywood studios refused to back his new film Red Tails - about World War II's Tuskegee Airmen - because the cast was all black.

This was told to a rather stunned Jon Stewart on Comedy Central's Daily Show (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Jon Stewart Mocks GOP as 'White Man's' Party and Jabs Concerns About Nuclear Iran

By Brad Wilmouth | January 04, 2012 | 01:40

On Tuesday's The Daily Show on Comedy Central, as he recounted the racist newsletters that were published in the 1990s under the name of GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul, host Jon Stewart mocked other GOP candidates after clips of them attacking Paul for not taking seriously the threat of a nuclear Iran, suggesting that the candidates were not so concerned about racism. (Video below)

Moments later, as he mocked Republican voters for adding former Senator Rick Santorum to the list of candidates they are willing to consider, Stewart took another race-based shot at the Republican Party as he used a box of Whitman's chocolates as a prop and pronounced the brand name as if it were "White Man's."

After showing clips of the candidates criticizing Paul's willingness to allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons, Stewart cracked:

Jon Stewart Wades into BMI Muppet Controversy

By Iris Somberg | December 15, 2011 | 14:32

When MRC’s Business & Media Institute pointed out that the latest Muppet Movie featured the tired Hollywood cliché of a rich oil man as the villain, left-wing bloggers and comedians ran to the Muppets’ defense. Now Jon Stewart has picked up the mantle. On the Dec. 14 episode of “The Daily Show,” Stewart railed against the Muppet critics, “There are so many controversies this holiday season, but of all of them, only one is the stupidest.”

In a five minute segment, Stewart went after what he deemed the “stupidest” controversy, and brought on guest John Hodgman to defend liberal Hollywood films. That of course devolved into mockery of movies and creatively edited clips such as a “Profitar” spoof based on “Avatar.” (See Video Below)

O'Reilly Rips Stewart: 'How Can You Watch Eight Hours of Fox News Every Day and Still be a Pinhead?'

By Noel Sheppard | December 10, 2011 | 10:51

Fox News's Bill O'Reilly and Comedy Central's Jon Stewart are once again locked in a battle of wits.

Having been told by O'Reilly that he was "going to hell" for remarks he made about the war on Christmas, Stewart said Thursday, "I make my living watching Fox News eight hours a day. I'm already in hell! Boom! Boom! Your move, O'Reilly."

This led The Factor host to marvelously respond Friday, "All right, here's my move. How can you watch eight hours of Fox News every day and still be a pinhead?" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Conan Repeats False HuffPo Claim That Fox Business’s Bolling Called Muppets ‘Communist’

By Iris Somberg | December 06, 2011 | 11:48

A false Huffington Post claim that Fox Business Network’s Eric Bolling called the Muppets “communist” quickly spread to other news and entertainment outlets on Dec. 5. A segment on the latest Muppet villain, oil tycoon Tex Richman, was quickly twisted by the left into an attack on Fox and showed where news organizations and comedy shows get their information.

In the movie, the Muppets are out to save their studio and prevent Richman from destroying it to drill for oil. “Follow the Money” host Bolling said at the end of his segment, “We’re teaching our kids class warfare. What are we, communist China?” Apparently this expression of exasperation caused HuffPo to say he went “McCarthy” on the movie.

Jon Stewart Revels in Rick Perry's 'Brain Turd' Moment as the 'Dope Diamond'

By Geoffrey Dickens | November 11, 2011 | 14:15

Jon Stewart, on Thursday's Daily Show, repeatedly mocked Rick Perry for his, as he put it, "brain turd" moment at this week's CNBC debate. However, Perry wasn't the only GOP candidate Stewart made fun of. Everyone from Perry to Santorum took a hit. The only candidate Stewart didn't mock was Mitt Romney, whom the Daily Show host declared to be the winner of the whole race. "It's over! Indecision 2012 Mercy Rule Edition. Because in presidential primaries, as in little league, if one team is up 10-0 in the third you call it a day an you head over to Friendly's for some Fribbles and some food poisoning."

Stewart initially teased his audience with the Perry clip by calling it: "Rick Perry's now infamous ABC Wide World of Sports agony-of-defeat-worthy brain turd." Then he went on to savage the other GOP contenders on his November 10 show. (video after the jump)

Brian Williams Worries Jon Stewart Has Been Too Tough on Occupy Wall Street

By Kyle Drennen | November 01, 2011 | 16:51

In an interview with Daily Show host Jon Stewart on the premiere of NBC's latest news magazine Rock Center on Monday, host Brian Williams fretted over Stewart's mocking of the Occupy Wall Street protests: "A lot of people were surprised....You were tough on them. You've been tough on them. You've been exacting and taking them to task for all the mayhem, for the drum circles."

Stewart joked: "We poke gentle fun at the rhythm percussion. That's all we do." Williams countered: "You don't think your stance on them has been tougher than most people would expect?" Stewart reassured him: "No. I don't think it's been – it's been tougher. How can it be? I have – I have great empathy....They want jobs. They want dignity."

Bozell Column: The Anti-God Book, by 'God'

By Brent Bozell | October 29, 2011 | 08:31

Those prestigious publishers at Simon & Schuster selected All Saints Day to unleash the book world's latest attempt at mocking Christianity. It’s called "The Last Testament, by God."

The author is David Javerbaum, a top writer for 11 years for "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central, perhaps America's leading religion-hating TV network. Is it any surprise that the critics are loving it?

Daily Show Star on GOP 2012 Field: 'Very Gifted at Inspiring Comedy from Abject Despair'

By Tim Graham | October 28, 2011 | 06:47

The Washington Post's Express tabloid profiled British-accented Daily Show star John Oliver on Thursday, reveling in how he covered Sarah Palin's "flag-draped liberty coach" bus tour and told Jon Stewart on the Rupert Murdoch-harming News of the World phone-hacking scandal "I'm about to give you a schadenfraude-gasm, Jon."

He's no fan of the Republican presidential field: "I think all the candidates [are] very gifted at inspiring comedy from abject despair. Michele Bachmann certainly has a special quality to her. Her speeches are like semantic palindromes; they make exactly as much sense when you read them backward as when you read them forward." The paper didn't ask for Obama jokes.

J. Crew Exec Responsible for Transgender-Promoting Ad Leaving Husband for Lesbian Lover

By Paul Wilson | October 25, 2011 | 16:05

Remember the J. Crew pink toenail controversy? MRC’s Culture and Media Institute started a firestorm of controversy last spring by drawing attention to an ad in which Jenna Lyons, J. Crew president and creative director, was painting her son’s toenails pink.

The caption in that ad read: “Lucky for me, I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink. Toenail painting is way more fun in neon.”

The Daily Mail and Huffington Post reported that Lyons is leaving her husband for her lesbian lover.

Jon Stewart Makes Light of N-ggerhead By Showing How Many Places in America Have Similar Names

By Noel Sheppard | October 04, 2011 | 10:07

As the Washington Post expected when it published it's pathetic, racially charged, 3000-word, front page hit piece on Texas governor Rick Perry Sunday, America's media outlets have largely taken the bait by expressing outrage over this non-story.

Curiously bucking the trend was Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" Monday which used black contributor Wyatt Cenac to humorously demonstrate how many places across the country have names like N-ggerhead (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Mitch Daniels No Fan of Jon Stewart

By Brent Baker | September 29, 2011 | 00:33

A few days after a contentious appearance on The Daily Show, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels made clear to the Washington Examiner’s “Yeas & Nays” column that he didn’t appreciate how Jon Stewart treated him.

In the item in Wednesday’s newspaper, “Stewart not among Mitch Daniels favorite book tour stops,” the free daily’s Nikki Schwab noted how Daniels is on a book tour and “said he had met some interesting people along the way, but not among them, a certain host of The Daily Show, on which Daniels appeared on last week. ‘If you think I'm going to say Jon Stewart, you’re wrong,’ he told Yeas & Nays. ‘I'm just not going to.’”

Jon Stewart Calls Santorum and Perry 'Idiot'

By Brad Wilmouth | September 27, 2011 | 08:41

On Monday's "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central, host Jon Stewart called both Rick Santorum and Rick Perry idiots as he responded to some of their statements from the most recent GOP presidential debate.

After a clip of Santorum arguing that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy should be reinstated, suggesting that members of the armed forces should keep their sexual orientation to themselves as they serve, Stewart responded with censored profanity and ended up calling the former Republican Senator an "idiot":

Jon Stewart Presses Mitch Daniels to Admit the GOP Uses Intemperate 'Socialist' and 'Confiscation' Lingo

By Tim Graham | September 22, 2011 | 22:52

On The Daily Show Wednesday night, Jon Stewart interviewed Mitch Daniels and there were no laughs. Stewart put on his serious face, stroked his chin, and tried to get Daniels to admit that the Republicans were unfairly defending wealthy people and making no sense.

Stewart played dumb: “It seems like the Republicans are doing everything they can to protect the wealthiest people in this country, through policy and through rhetoric. And I guess I'm just not understanding why. And I'm having a problem. This decade has not been a bad decade for the wealthiest of Americans, and if they are the job creators, why are they not creating?” The obligatory cheering and applause came from Stewart’s liberal audience.

Lefty Hypocrites Level Gay Slurs

By Matthew Philbin | August 17, 2011 | 08:55

It’s hard to keep up with what the media and the left deem acceptable. Seems like just last year Anderson Cooper publicly took offense at a line from a movie. Come to think of it, it was just last year that the CNN anchor found “That’s so gay,” upsetting to his perfectly honed PC sensibilities.

Fast forward a year. Many people are accusing two currently prominent figures of being gay. But don’t hold your breath waiting for indignant coverage from Cooper and the rest of the media, because it’s liberals leveling the charge against conservatives.

Take, for example, Marcus Bachmann, husband of GOP presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.). The Bachmanns have been married more than 30 years, and have five children. Mr. Bachmann runs a clinic that offers Christian counseling to people struggling with “unwanted” homosexual feelings – derisively termed “praying away the gay” by liberals.
