July 7, 2008 - 11:38 ET by liberal_bug_zapperIt's ok, however, the column with our account is squished over to the far right side with no margin. Some margin would afford a much cleaner looking site.
Other than that, great job.

July 7, 2008 - 11:57 ET by Don DeskinsIt is about the content, not the presentation... look at Drudge... He didn't waste his time on graphics/layout/colors!
Not sure if I like it or not.
July 7, 2008 - 13:25 ET by SpockWhat was wrong with it the way it was? New design is OK I guess, but it will take some getting used to.
It scared me for just a second..

I think the dial-up folk will find the pages longer to load..
How about putting a "top" button down on the bottom of the pages?

July 7, 2008 - 13:36 ET by sozinho...I wish there were a way to disable the automatic screen refresh. I'm
tired of having to find my way back to what I was reading or having to
start a film clip all over again once it gets interrupted. I can hit

July 7, 2008 - 14:14 ET by SumricaThe Drudge site has a script that makes the page auto reload like that. There are ad blocking programs out there that enable selectively blocking scrips that contain certain words. At Drudge, the word for blocking auto reload is "autorefresh".
Screen refresh
July 7, 2008 - 20:50 ET by ThisnThat2nd that screen refresh disabler -- big time.

The way to stop the page
July 7, 2008 - 22:56 ET by FairlightThe way to stop the page refresh is to go to Options on your browser and disable Javascript. Also, for the safest lnternet experience you should not use Internet Explorer and download the Firefox browser instead.
You Asked
July 7, 2008 - 13:59 ET by SumricaYou continue to add Adobe Flash stuff. You've even gone to Flash ads. Don't like it. I fear you'll begin animating things, next, to entertain our peripheral vision.
I went on a Flash and script blocking mission here back when you first added that NewsBusted video. It was auto-loading and playing by itself. I contacted you about it doing that. No reply. It persisted. So, I blocked the entire content to the extent I don't see any of it any longer. If I want to watch, I'll click.
I like coming to this site several times a day. Don't mess that up for me. Keep it simple every chance you get. Keep your web designer in handcuffs.

agree
July 7, 2008 - 14:12 ET by ur-conIf I accidentally leave the sound on my coworkers and boss are immediately alerted to what I'm browsing. Not good. If I want to view it, I'll click on it. You're not doing me any favors by autostarting it and by adding 'features' that don't improve navigation or readability.
Otherwise, I like the wider layout.

New design helps me!
July 7, 2008 - 14:06 ET by JannyMaeI have a vision problem, so I really like the new design. The thinner columns are easier for me to read.

July 7, 2008 - 14:11 ET by Clear thinkerI'm having the exact opposite problem.

July 7, 2008 - 16:54 ET by JannyMaeYou can't please everyone. Sorry to hear you have problems with it. You could increase the size of the text, and maybe that would help???
JannyMae...
July 7, 2008 - 17:01 ET by Clear thinkerI would change the size of the text, but then that would mean that whenever I write a reply I would have to type bigger too!

Loss of emphasis
July 7, 2008 - 15:19 ET by JohnMThe increase in size of all the text on the right side of the page:
1. means I now have to scroll right to see the full width (no I am not going to change screen resolution)
2. elevates those "points of addtional interest" to the same level as the "points of primary interest", for an overall "flattening" of the topography. In the new layout, now EVERYTHING gets the same emphasis (based on structure of all items), and carries the same importance, which is obviously not true (based on content of the item).
I'd like the supplementary items to receive less emphasis, as before.
On the other hand, the banner (with it's little pictures) puts emphasis on a few items, which is clear and which I like. HOWEVER, it is important that the little headlines for those pictures be really snappy, or else it's just another item that gets attention due to its placement rather than its actual content...
Overall, the new design is cleaner and crisper - nice job!
Redesign at NB?
July 7, 2008 - 15:56 ET by acumenHmmmm. Checking....
Negatives -- Glancing over today's posts I'm just not seeing the new changes at NB -- I can't help but notice the same ol' shameless biased media in lockstep with the Dem Party, the same ol' hand-wringing media apologizing for anything Islamofascist, same ol' exuberant media ga ga over all things left while offering only the worst doom and gloom on all things America and still seeing the latest trendy crusade of the new guilt-ridden media theorizing man-made global climate change is the most pressing problem in the world. I guess some redesign issues take longer to fix.
Positives -- Some things are best left unchanged....Conservative T-shirt girl still follows me around the room with those dreamy eyes.
Only kidding Matt. Looks good. Great job guys.
I like it
July 7, 2008 - 16:44 ET by candanceI really like the new layout. You guys did a fantastic job.

July 7, 2008 - 17:16 ET by kevcadFinally! At least it's worth having a 16:9 wide screen with no wasted empty space.

New site look...
July 7, 2008 - 17:03 ET by Clear thinkerThe biggest issue for me is the 'edit' button being killed. For me it's an important tool because there are many times I need to fix what I wrote so I don't look like a complete fool.

That's weird. The edit
July 7, 2008 - 17:13 ET by Cureboy675That's weird. The edit button still shows up on it when I look at it. I wonder if something isn't refreshed or something (but then again, I don't know the first thing about website design. But if you need anything done in 1980s style COBOL programming, I'm your guy)
Really like it...
July 7, 2008 - 17:16 ET by BlondeI used it all weekend (preview to the first five) on my home p.c., with a really nice 19" flat screen. That was sweet, and I like the bigger fonts.
But to get the total WOW effect...this morning I cranked it up at work with my 26" widescreen. Holy Smokes Batman! The expand to fit is amazing, the page just really flows (and I set my comments up threaded).
This site just gets better all the time.

July 7, 2008 - 17:23 ET by Cureboy675I totally agree. The new layout looks awesome here on my home computer with my fancy schmancy large flat screen monitor. I wasn't too crazy about it on my 45 year old monitor I have at work. But here it looks great!
Hey by the way. Something you said intrigued me. You mentioned setting up the comments threaded. Is there a way we can alter the way that we view the comments? (Duh. Nevermind. I see it now plain as day at the top of the page.)
Ha Cureboy!
July 7, 2008 - 19:00 ET by BlondeAsk & the answer is apparent.
The big monitor is the way to go....I have a beautiful 19" Xerox flatscreen here, but at work, 26" high resolution...worth the $$$. I think I'll go get a new one for here next weekend.

Leans Left
July 7, 2008 - 20:59 ET by ThisnThatWell, the biggest problem is that you now have to lean left to reply to a post. Used to be NB supported all those on the right.
Is this a political statement? Is NB now turning leftwards? Just wonderin' out loud, here.

Matthew, I like the new format.
July 7, 2008 - 21:03 ET by R D HelmLOL-Of course, I am going to have to finally go out and buy that wide flat-screen monitor.
The only thing I am not really enamored with is the "Widget Box" for Recent Posts.
Guess I will have to assimilate to that. :-^)

I like the new design, and I
July 7, 2008 - 21:21 ET by CJK51I like the new design, and I have a semi-related question about the layout and rendering of this site. Is there a setting or version that renders better in a BlackBerry? I'm not able to get to this site much on my work PC, but I do need my fix during the day. It's manageable in the BB screen, but I'm curious if there's something better. If someone does have an answer, please leave a message for me through my account. Thanks in advance!

Don't Like It
July 7, 2008 - 22:17 ET by pbthinkerI don't like it and it will take a while to get used to. Before, I could read the comments, put in my 2 cents worth as I went along. Now, I have to chose to read or comment and, once I'm reading and decide to comment, I have to go back and click again.
But hey, I'm just a small cog in a big machine so don't worry about me.

pbthinker - the comments don't work any different for me
July 7, 2008 - 22:47 ET by Dee BunkI'm not sure why they do for you. The presentation is just different with the big green buttons and I think the edit and reply buttons on the comments themselves moved from the lright to the left. There is also a new section between the story and the comments, but the comments seem to work the same.

Why? The reply buttons are still there. I always had to go to the top to add a comment.

July 7, 2008 - 23:19 ET by mom_roxchange the color of the Post a Comment and Read Comments links (blue would be preferable than lime green)
change the font on the comments section - currently too large and narrow. For those who do prefer the larger text, can you add one of those bars to select a font size?
While you're at it, can you add a favicon? I have manually added one to my nb link, but it occasionally disappears.
I'll also echo a previous suggestion. When adding a url link, have "open in new window" be the default option.
nice job.

Matt 3 suggestions
July 7, 2008 - 23:57 ET by shawn228Matt I really like the new setup, it looks cool. 3 suggestions though
1: Improve the search engine."at the very least have things in chronilogical order"
2: Have a chat open, when there is a big political moment
3: I don't believe in having a ignore button on the regular board, but maybe an ignore feature on chat.
Thx Matt, for making this the best political site on the net.
Some folks can dish it out but cannot take it
"change"
July 8, 2008 - 01:19 ET by JudithI really don't like reading down narrow columns and the font used for the comments is awful to read. "If it ain't broken, don't fix it"?
There was a change?
July 8, 2008 - 06:48 ET by cjbreischSeriously, the posts come into my mailbox. The only time I come to the page is to post a comment, or sometimes for longer posts because it's easier to read longer ones in the browser.
So, I never do any navigating and barely notice the page outside the text of the post.
I clicked "Fine either way", but would've preferred "didn't notice anything". :)
Needs Work to be Firefox 3.0 compatible
July 8, 2008 - 07:15 ET by BritcomThe new site look fine, but it is not operating as well as the old one did on my Firefox 3.0 browser. It is slow to load, the threads sometimes are wider than the screen, and the threads don't scroll smoothly with the mouse wheel; it stops while the screen draws the new lines of text.
I realize that Firefox 3.0 is new, so I am going to wait and see if the bugs can be worked out for Firefox 3.0 users.
