Hurts...A lot.
August 23, 2008 - 09:01 ET by cjbreischObama's key demographic is 18-34 yr olds, who respond most favorably to his message of "hope and change". They won't respond well to someone who has been in the Senate longer than anyone in this group has been alive.
This is typically the most unreliable voting bloc. They will often stay home because they were up late the night before watching Monday Night Football. Obama doesn't need anything that will dampen their enthusiasm for their candidate.
Unfortunately for the Dems,
August 23, 2008 - 09:15 ET by KevpotUnfortunately for the Dems, young people need to do more than just give 'mad props out to their man'. They have to make it to the voting booth. I'm surprised the Dems havent introduced a bill that would allow people to text their vote. That way they could count on their peeps in lockdown and those who are south of the border.
Just a general question
August 23, 2008 - 09:12 ET by HippopaulimusHas anyone checked, and can someone tell me;
When did Obama decide to shun his white heritage and become a "typical black person" ?
And was it around the time he met his wife?

Talk about SPIN!

I guess now not only repeating a lie often enough to the masses matters, now they are trying to sincerely convince themselves...

Biden
August 23, 2008 - 09:59 ET by doug1950OB's choice speaks volumns about his abilities in critical thinking and decisions. This is good for the McCain chances. Biden has been in the Senate longer than even McCain; so much for the agent of change! Biden suffers from an acute case of hoof-n-mouth disease and an ego bigger than Delaware. The run up to the elections will be absolutely delicious with all the gaffes and stumbles. Between OB and Biden it is going to be a hoot.
I went with "hurt a lot"
August 23, 2008 - 10:16 ET by sarcasmoDemocrats don't need to try to jam yet-another northeastern establishment big government Michael Dukakis era lefty down America's throat anyway. Doing it in the name of "change" is simply laughable (I'm thrilled CNN scooped their stupid text message idea, too, that proves the Obama campaign has a good leak!). IMO this was a poor choice because the Democrats and the news media are now trying to pretend Biden hasn't got baggage. IMO the scandal about cribbing some Brit socialist's speech which took him out of the running last time is only the beginning of what will be found when they look into Biden's record.
JMR
PS I love the brand new McCain ad where Biden himself says "I'd be honored to run with or against John McCain." (Emphasis mine.) Yes, folks, I just saw it. We now have an official McCain commercial which -- via an impeccably left-wing Democrat -- effectively admits to what many of us have said all along. "RINO!!" :)
The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Worst Of The Worst
August 23, 2008 - 10:34 ET by JoelCTOk, maybe not the worst of the worst. He could have picked Larry Craig. But given that, I think this is an absolutely horrible choice. I wonder if the DNC, led by Screamin' Dean, forced this choice down Obama's throat. Biden was elected during the Vietnam War, while Nixon was President, in 1972. That is ancient history to Obama's young core voting block. A 21-year old voting in November was born in 1987.
Obama just guaranteed a Republican landslide.
Biden has been HOW MANY YEARS in office?

No difference
August 23, 2008 - 11:33 ET by pbthinkerWell, I said no difference, but I could have gone with hurts somewhat, also. Obama's problem is he's the President on the ticket. Everyone says the no one votes for the vice-president so Obama is his own worst enemy, when it comes to inexperience.
People complain about the power Cheney had, in the Bush Administration, but at least the President knew his weaknesses and corrected them. I seriously doubt that Senator Obama understands his weaknesses.

Hard to see too many
August 23, 2008 - 11:35 ET by HumanEventsHard to see too many positives about this pick. An AP story calls Biden an "expert on national security", I suppose because he chairs the foreign relations committee. But he certainly does not have military experience as McCain does. Perhaps it will still help Obama to trail a little lesser in the polls in that area to McCain.
Hopefully people will see that Biden is just yet another typical political hack. Like so many Dems in 2002, he said Saddam was a grave danger. Then he voted for the war. Then he said he made a mistake. Real national security expertise there!
They also say being born in Pennsylvania and being a Senator in nearby Delaware could help Obama win swing state Pennsylvania. But I don't think the fact that he lived in PA from 1942-1952 will make much difference with voters. And being in a nearby state is still not the same as the state itself. Aside form the Philadelphia area (which will vote for Obama overwhelmingly anyway) how many in PA really hear much about Biden or Delaware news?
Seems to me the biggest thing Biden adds is his age of 65 and 6 terms as a Senator (thereby giving much needed experience to the ticket). Overall, I think Biden HURTS SOMEWHAT at best. And that's good news for us!
Of all the possible choices
August 23, 2008 - 11:51 ET by Joe C.Of all the possible choices - from an admittedly shallow pool - Biden is
the one guy that brings nothing. If he was just a "zero," you could
have at least said that he was a benign choice, but Biden is a net
negative!
What's that McCain says about, "questioning his judgment." This pretty much proves his point.
These would have been my choices in order of Republican concern: Clinton,
Bayh, Kaine, Nelson, Richardson, Hagel, C. Edwards....Hannah Montana,
Wesley Clark, Osama Bin Laden, Biden.

August 23, 2008 - 13:10 ET by Jack BauerMy McCain VP prediction...
IT AIN'T ROMNEY... I think!
I've just seen a McCain instant Biden response ad. It's running what Biden said against Obama. And what Biden said in favor of McCain. Oddly surreal.
I'm guessing that if this is a tactic, then he won't be piacking Mitt as there's lots of tape of him saying anti-McCain stuff.

in many ways, i see biden as the anti-obama and this ...
August 23, 2008 - 15:57 ET by pmohbuckwill hurt obama right off the bat:
1. while obama is obviously afraid to speak freely on his own ... biden isn't ... and when biden does speak, people often cringe ... i guarantee he will slip before the election
2. obama claims that he represents change, but here he picks an entrenched, partisan politician who, at 65, has been a senator for 36 years ... so much for "change" and "a new direction" ... this totally devalues the central point of obama's campaign
3. biden's experience totally overshadows obama's and is akin to a parent accompanying their child to school because the child is afraid to go by himself
4. although biden's foreign policy experience is considered a "strength", it still doesn't match mccain when you add mccain's military experience ... biden is nothing but a lifelong politician
5. chosing biden comes across (to me) as an act of desperation ... i think obama knows he's in trouble ... that his words, experience and personal dealings are being legitimately questioned more and more, the flaws in his candidacy are beginning to show ... he needs an influencial person with a long service record to help him.
I put no difference. Biden
August 23, 2008 - 16:59 ET by Davester65I put no difference. Biden is a generic machine politician from a small state. Kind of what Obama will be in 30 years or so maybe minus the small state part. I don't count sitting on senate commitees for 30+ years as real world experience and that's all Biden has really done. I doubt he'll hurt Obama much because I'm sure the MSM will gloss over or ignore his gaffes. If I had gotten the text message my reply would have been "Big Deal".

A nice-sounding bill called the “Global Poverty Act,” sponsored by Democratic
presidential candidate and Senator Barack Obama, is up for a Senate vote on
Thursday and could result in the imposition of a global tax on the United
States.
Senator Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has
not endorsed either Senator Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton in the presidential
race. But on Thursday, February 14, he is trying to rush Obama’s “Global Poverty
Act” (S.2433) through his committee. The legislation would commit the U.S.
To spending 0.7 percent of gross national product on foreign aid, which amounts
to a phenomenal 13-year total of $845 billion over and above what the U.S.
Already spends.
In the hands of a would-be President Obama who, through his faith,
questions what he calls the “idolatry of the free market,” who seeks “economic
justice” and who champions ridding the world of aids and genocide, the Global
Poverty Act is a wad of gum far bigger than we want to chew, and it’ll keep
getting bigger. Handing out taxpayer dollars to third world countries only
treats the symptoms of poverty and not the causes.
“America needs to do more to help the 1.1 billion men, women and
children throughout the world living on less than $1 a day by helping promote
sustainable economic growth and development,”

READ
August 24, 2008 - 00:42 ET by adamLet me just say a few things here...
The Obama campaign has said what they want to say knowing that they can
say it no more. The Obama camp can no longer use the race card
pre-emptively because of Joe Biden's remarks pertaining to 7-11 stores
and Obama himself. Obama supporters can no longer talk about the
"stolen" 2000 election because Obama did not win the popular vote.
Obama can no longer talk about McCain being a "Washington Insider".
Obama can no longer talk about McCain's 7 homes (although it was said
in Biden's speech today. Biden said "Ladies and gentlemen, your kitchen table is like mine. You sit there at
night before you put the kids, after you put the kids to bed and you
talk, you talk about what you need. You talk about how much you're
worried about being able to pay the bills. Well, ladies and gentlemen,
that's not a worry John McCain has to worry about. It's a pretty hard
experience. He'll have to figure out which of the seven kitchen tables
to sit at."
"Your kitchen table is like mine"???????????? How large was the home
that poor Joey Biden left today to accept his invitation? I only wish
that people supporting this choad would see that he has nothing to
worry about financially just as McCain or any other senator does. This
is purely politics, although, the statement was met with cheers as if
Biden had walked on stage wearing a burlap sack, cutoff gloves and a
half-eaten can of generic baked beans. If only the weak-minded would
open their eyes (and minds) and recognize that these are politicians
who are pretending that they are also upper-lower-middle-classers.
Let me add a bottom line here: Dick Morris has been quite an asset
for those of us who have been looking for an insider's view on the way
things have been. It's been a fear of mine, however, that Mr. Morris
will (and may have) provided a standing for which the democrats have
picked up and run with. Dick Morris has been instrumental in providing
details that, until he opened his mouth, were unknown to the likes of
the layperson. Mr. Morris has pointed out that in the 1992 election
Hillary was intentionally made the focal point. Even at the Republican
Convention Hillary was the focal point. Mr. Morris successfully
detracted from Bill Clinton by making someone else the focus of the
media and those involved. Does anyone else find it odd that before
Biden spoke the McCain campaign had an ad out dealing with the
subject? Obama is looking for a way to detract attention from himself
and he has most certainly found it. He chose a man who, not only made
racist comments about Indians and Obama himself, but has such a
tremendous bout of diarrhea of the mouth that the media and attention
will magnetize to him. While everyone is focusing on Biden, Obama will
slip into the shadows and receive nothing as far as critical attention
is concerned. It worked for Bill Clinton and it will work for Obama if
we're not careful. Obama named a man who is the antithesis of who
Obama claims to be. Again, he cannot attack McCain for being an
insider anymore. After all, McCain is not much older and Biden has
been in Washington longer. Obama seeks to be out of the spotlight now
that he has baked in it. Granted, Joe Biden is a loud-mouthed NoBama,
but if we all focus on that like Obama wants us to, we will have lost
focus on what's important. Anyone will tell you that the VP pick is
trivial in the grand scheme of things, let's not make it more than it
is. Keep the focus on Obama. Keep the focus where Obama doesn't want
it which is on him. I can promise that Biden will make remarks that
are intentionally crude, rude, outlandish and noteworthy, but listen
people, that is called strategy. The less focus on Biden and the more
focus on Obama is best.
Rub your eyes, clear your lungs of the smoke screen and let's get on
with what really matters - Obama is clueless and smoke and mirrors
cannot detract from the fact that our country deserves better.
That's why I voted that Biden will help Obama...
