You wrote "Thompson isn't even clear about his abortion stance".
In Fred's own words...
Activist judges across the country seem intent on legislating from the bench to promote a culture of abortion, redefine marriage, and undermine families—in effect re-shaping the values of our entire society without the consent of the people. We need judges who recognize their role in our democracy is to interpret, not make, the law. I am committed to:
Appointing strict constructionist judges who will interpret the law, not impose their views on us by legislating from the bench.
Judge Pickering refuses the term "activist judges". They are, he says, "Deviant Judges". I think his argument correctly describes what is happening in our courts.
I believe Fellow Republicans should use the more accurately descriptive term also.
Thompson on Hannity and Colmes where he said the above , but that he would vote against criminalizing it in his own state. He against federal abortion, but for abortion in his own state.
Yes he is against the federal abortion law, but he correctly beleives that it's a States Rights issue and should be left up to each state. He knows that this will result in about 3-4 states that would allow abortion on demand. Thereby saving millions of lives each year.
he's beoming robotic. I expected more of him than pre-programmed jokes and hiding behind lawyers when asked what he would do if America were to be attacked.
I suspect that anyone who was pre-disposed to dislike Thompson, as you obviously were, would think he had nothing to say.
if you were
president of the United States, would you need to go to Congress to get
authorization to take military action against Iran's nuclear facilities?
He then said he would consult his lawyers about this, "but obviously the president of the United States has to do what's in
the best interest of the United States to protect us against a
potential threat."
Romney's first words were "call the lawyers!" and the rest was a platitude....which is amusing, since you complained about Thompson's so-called "platitudes." ;^)
His first thought was to "lawyer up", and even after that, he could do no better than come up with a platitude....the question must have been outside his robotic programming..... ;^)
"You sit down with your attorneys and tell them what you have to do" ....This means he tells them what he needs to do, and they say if he needs authorization from congress. This is the answer to the question.
Next he comes up with more after the platitude. He says:
But the key thing here is to make sure we don't have to use military action against Iran. That's what you hope to be able to do and that's why we're going to put a lot tougher sanctions on Iran --
economic sanctions, credit sanctions.
We're also going to have to get serious about treating
Ahmadinejad like the rogue and bafoon that he is. And it was outrageous for the United Nations to invite him to come to this country. It was outrageous for Columbia to invite him to speak at their university.
This is a person denied the Holocaust, a person who
has spoken about genocide, is seeking the means to carry it out. And it is unacceptable to this country to allow that individual to have he control of launching a nuclear weapon.
And so we will take the action necessary to keep that from happening.
The full answer is better, even though creating the vision of lawyers for that circumstance was still a mistake.
When I say "robotic", I'm also speaking of other times during the debate when his facial muscles didn't seem to match what he was saying. I think that if he doesn't learn to show some emotion, he won't even win the nomination, much less the Presidency.
For me, his business management experience is a strong reason to consider him...but I'm also concerned about his TRUE beliefs toward immigration, NAU, SCOTUS judges, etc. I know what he has said, but I want to see him say it.
That's why I want to see the field thinned. Until then, these debates won't give us enough information about the top candidates.

From time to time Im asked this by my conservative friends, and it all boils down to my sheer contempt for labor unions. Immigrants are willing to work for much, much less money and benefits than labor unions, thus keeping power out of unions reach. All the labor immigrants do would be done by corrupt unions otherwise. So I side with immigrants over labor unions everyday of the week.
Just like speeding, and many other laws. They aren't enforced because they are not practical or supported strongly enough by the public. If they want to start enforcing there has to be an amnesty period. Not an amnesty that would allow people to become citizens, but an amnesty that would allow them to "fess up" by becoming guest workers.
Nothing will ever ever ever be done about illegal immigration no matter who is President if there isn't something workable. If people like how it is now better than how it could be with a guest worker program then keep going for enforcement of current laws only. The laws will never get enforced as always because they are too hard to enforce as they currently stand.
I know I'm in disagreement with most here on the subject. I think it's one issue that crosses party because I know many Democrats who are against any kind of amnesty and just want enforcement of our current laws. I think that position is just as unreasonable as thinking we can control terrorism by law enforcement alone.
Most Mexicans just want to feed their families and we need them. No one is willing to pay the higher prices for everything. The only way to get a handle on the problem it is to make it legal. If it's easier and safer to get legal documents then people will comply.
Some may have noticed my love of hot-rods from some of my postings, so trust me when I say, the states that I have lived in LOVE giving me speeding tickets. Either getting older or divine intervention has kept me from a speeding ticket for the past 12 years, so maybe you are right and they don't hand them out anymore. Yipppeeeeee, time to put the hammer down!
safe driver citation every time I renew my license. They usually only pull people over if they are going 10 miles or more over the limit and they are also much more likely to pull over younger people and older cars. That's why I used to get tickets when I was young and I don't anymore.

"unions also remain an important political factor (especially within the Democratic Party), both through mobilization of their own memberships and through coalitions with like-minded activist organizations." Wiki
The reason unions are losing membership, I believe, is directly due to immigrant labor.
The immigrants may be illegal but as long as they dont commit crimes and pay taxes, they have my blessing. Those who do not are another story. They should be able to pay taxes without fear of being deported, even if they are illegal.
We should only pay taxes to keep immigrant scientists and others whose intelligence is uncommonly high, here in the US.
Yeah, he ran against her for the senate seat she now occupies and was losing his @ss so he withdrew from the race stating health reasons (to get the foot removed from his arse). Thats a mighty fine record against Hitlery! Outside of fiscal conservatism, a vote for Hitlery and a vote for Rudy are one in the same. I'll pass.
An early, January 1999 poll showed Giuliani trailing Clinton by 10 points. By January 2000, Giuliani had reversed the situation, pulling 9 points ahead after taking advantage of Clinton's abovementioned campaign stumbles. Nevertheless, the Giuliani campaign was showing some structural weaknesses. So closely identified with New York City, he had somewhat limited appeal to naturally Republican voters in Upstate New York. The Farmersville Garbage Scandal was indicative of his reduced support upstate. On March 11, 2000, Giuliani and Clinton met face-to-face for the first time since the campaigning began, at the New York Inner Circle press dinner, an annual event in which New York politicians and the press corps stage skits, roast each other and make fun of themselves, with proceeds going to charity. Giuliani was on stage in male disco garb spoofing John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, but also appeared in drag in taped video clips that reworked the "Rudy/Rudia" theme of a past Inner Circle dinner, as well as in an exchange with Joan Rivers that sought to make fun of Clinton. Other performers' skits made fun of Clinton's Yankees claim and the infamous infidelity of her husband.
The New York Police Department's fatal shooting of Patrick Dorismond on March 15, 2000 inflamed Giuliani's already strained relations with the city's minority communities, and Clinton seized on it as a major campaign issue. By April, reports showed Clinton gaining upstate and generally outworking Giuliani, who stated that his duties as mayor prevented him from campaigning more.
By May 2000, Clinton was 8 to 10 points ahead of Giuliani in the polls.
I gave it to Thompson, just for his putdown of Chrissy when Matthews tried to sabotage his answer with "you should have stopped at 'no'."
"That's your opinion Christopher."
"Christopher" not "Chris", and delivered with a wry smile, a father talking to his son, was a Reagan-like line.
I'm not saying he's Reagan, and I'm not overblowing the line, but hopefully, we'll see more of that unwillingness to allow the libs to frame every argument.
as the other candidates have been. I suggest he won't be as likely to give a pass to the media's transparent attempts (like Chrissy last night) to frame the arguments from a liberal perspective. If I'm right, things could get interesting.
I know time will tell, but he is just getting started...I loved it and posted as such in the live chat room when he said, 'thats your opinion Christopher'....
We've only just begun!
Btw...I think I also posted that I wondered how many times the msm was going to replay that little clip of the back and forth...I didn't think it would be much yesterday and from what I have seen today I was right.
(although I haven't been watching/listening television too much today...busy busy busy...with the exception to some of the mark up bill the dems are having on trying to destroy FISA, not just now, but for the last 30 years, I hope this goes nowhere)
something like "Who asked for your opinion Chrissy" or something like that. I think he actually said Chrissy but I'm not sure. Mathews had just made some snide comment about his answer
Except Thompson said 'That's your opinion Christopher' after Chrissy said you should of stopped at No or some-such about an answer Thompson gave earlier....
You got it right. Christopher is what he said. Matthews was actually a lot better than I thought he would be. That woman (don't know her name) was so nasty. She didn't crack a smile the whole time.
I loved they way Guliani told her to get her head out of the sand or something like that a couple times.
I think Christopher had to be on somewhat of a hold back from his usual rabid crap because of all the criticism he got before the debate from the comments he made at his Hardball 10th Anniversary Party and such...(plus it was CNBC may have had a little to do with it)
I kind of like Maria Bartaroloma (believe me I butchered the last name) I do agree about the answer Rudy gave her though about London taking over Wall Street or being ahead of Wall Street however she put that asinine question...lol.
Edit...is London going to replace NY on Wall Street...or something like that.
I have only known her from CNBC which I used to watch a lot, I also think there was another channel she was on but too long ago and not important.
I saw her on Chrissy's half hour Sunday show before the 04 election and she seemed like the only conservative on there, she was not like the rest anyway, plus if memory serves me she supported Bush to an extent...
Too long ago for me to remember all Dee...
Know what I mean?
by the way, I could be wrong about her, do not watch her all that much.
Did anyone else catch the "Today" show's misleading attack on Thompson this morning?
They cut to the moderator asking him about a recession, and immediately cut to the part where he was grasping for the right words at the very end of his remarks, as though he was mentally ill and barely keeping the drool in his mouth.
The MSM is really getting nasty in their unwavering support for the Dems. They will stop at nothing to denigrate the GOP.
Why would Repubs schedule a debate during the day, when most Republicans are working???.....Democratic debates should be held during the day since their voting base is sitting at home on welfare anyway....
I have no idea who won because all I heard was the MSM's spin on it......
It was on CNBC and that time of day is when their biggest audience is
This was Thompson's first debate and NBC wanted to make sure other networks would use the debate footage in stories on that night's evening news shows.
Plus good ol' C-SPAN is replaying it right now on C-SPAN 2. most likely will during the week-end here and there too for any that missed it and would like to hear it.
I'm listening again while I am putterin' around here because I was in the Live Chat Room with others and didn't catch everything like I like to do...lol.
With the growing pseudo-support of Rudy and the attacks on Fred, it appears obvious who the media wants to win. Rudy is un-electable because of the social issues, no candidate who is pro-abortion has received over 50% of the vote. Even Clinton the first received 47 and 49% his two elections. I saw Huckabee do well. Not as well as he has done in prior debates, but well. Look for Hillary to pick to the right for VP, prob the New Mexico guy, and if Rudy gets the nod, he will also pick to the right (could he go to the left, maybe if he picked Olympia Snowe). Look for Rudy/Thompson or Rudy/Huckabee.
I like the thought of Thompson/Huckabee myself.

About 3 weeks ago I had the RNC call me. A really nice guy,
we got talking, I told him until they did something for real with the fence
that I would not give a dime to the RNC. He admitted that he has heard that

We have two border guards who were doing their jobs in prison, Pres. bush will not pardon them now he is agreeing with the international courts...
I have come to despise him over this issue...which I hoped I would never feel about this man...this is despicable.
I have been angry about this for days and have meant to post about it, by the time I get on here, I had forgotten about it until the nightly political shows, so I thank you for bringing it up.
On top of that Vicente Fox has made me scream lately too!
We had better have someone run on the borders and illegal immigration, that we believe like Hunter, hopefully Thompson, so far I am happy with his answers but this is the utmost of importance to me....along with SC Judges and of course terrorism/wars.

It's not a crime if it's not enforced
October 10, 2007 - 17:12 ET by Dee BunkJust like speeding, and many other laws.

Clear - Sorry didn't mean to be depressing
October 11, 2007 - 08:24 ET by Dee BunkI know I'm in disagreement with most here on the subject.

They usually only pull people over if they are going 10 miles or more over the limit and they are also much more likely to pull over younger people and older cars. That's why I used to get tickets when I was young and I don't anymore.

So I side with immigrants over labor unions everyday of the week
October 10, 2007 - 11:13 ET by vrwc13...But we are talking about "illegal" immigrants here. For the most part, the unions are legal workers.
Btw, unions are doing far less work in this country these days.
Percentage of workforce
▪ Total - 12.5%
▪ Public sector - 36.5%
▪ Private sector - 7.8%
Notice the higher percentage in the "Public" sector? Public sector = government work, your tax dollars at work!

October 10, 2007 - 11:16 ET by Matthew SheffieldThis poll is not about which immigration policy you prefer but which candidate won the debate yesterday.
I see your point
October 10, 2007 - 11:26 ET by third eyeThe reason unions are losing membership, I believe, is directly due to immigrant labor.
The only candidate who has lost to Hillary
October 11, 2007 - 08:36 ET by BigSpoon65BigSpoon65
Couldn't even beat her in New York! Pitiful!
Thompson
October 10, 2007 - 10:49 ET by RJI gave it to Thompson, just for his putdown of Chrissy when Matthews tried to sabotage his answer with "you should have stopped at 'no'."

October 10, 2007 - 15:20 ET by RJas the other candidates have been. I suggest he won't be as likely to give a pass to the media's transparent attempts (like Chrissy last night) to frame the arguments from a liberal perspective. If I'm right, things could get interesting.

October 10, 2007 - 15:33 ET by Dee Bunksomething like "Who asked for your opinion Chrissy" or something like that. I think he actually said Chrissy but I'm not sure. Mathews had just made some snide comment about his answer

BT - I started reading too far down
October 10, 2007 - 15:51 ET by Dee BunkYou got it right. Christopher is what he said. Matthews was actually a lot better than I thought he would be. That woman (don't know her name) was so nasty. She didn't crack a smile the whole time.

October 10, 2007 - 16:01 ET by bigtimerDee...

Dee
October 10, 2007 - 16:09 ET by bigtimerI have only known her from CNBC which I used to watch a lot, I also think there was another channel she was on but too long ago and not important.

Rudy Media Darling
October 10, 2007 - 11:38 ET by Casey97With the growing pseudo-support of Rudy and the attacks on Fred, it appears obvious who the media wants to win.

October 10, 2007 - 16:32 ET by bigtimerUSA...
I could not agree more with you about this filthy situation with not going ahead and executing this filthy swine, instead the WH is fighting this..
