Same place I've celebrated
July 3, 2008 - 09:49 ET by Hero SquadSame place I've celebrated it for the past 13-odd years... family will be coming in for the event. The steak, burgers and beer will be plentiful. Hey, not everybody can drive; someone has to be there to be driven to, and for Independence Day, that someone is us.
Our town has the oldest continuous Fourth of July Festival in our local park. And our front porch has one of the best seats in the house for an outstanding fireworks display set to patriotic music.

Sorry about vote reset
July 3, 2008 - 10:22 ET by Matthew SheffieldI tried to hold off on fixing the editing of the phrase "to my own backyard" which started out being an answer to a different headline.
The vote resets are annoying, I'll admit. Unfortunately, I have no time to try and fix it as I am putting on the finishing touches of the new NewsBusters theme for rollout next week.
If anyone is interested in getting a preview of the new theme, post a reply to this comment. The first 5 people to do so will get their themes changed before everyone else does.

Cureboy675, No true red
July 3, 2008 - 23:57 ET by futbolisgreat1Cureboy675,
No true red blooded American that loves his nation would dare vote for any of today's Democrats.
I am unsure how voting for Obama will make this nation great. Anyone that doesn't see this either hates America or has blinders on.
There are good Democrats out there, but none of them are in leadership positions.
I am unsure how voting for the Democrat leadership which has constantly undermine our troops in Iraq. Which has given words to our enemies to use against us and to justify the killing of our men and women in uniform. Which have blown out of proportion stories like Abu Grab or the supposed desacration of the Koran which in turn gave ammunition for the terrorists to justify their murdering spree. Which has accused Marines of cold blooded murder.
Is this the leadership you claim has America's best interest at heart? really?
please do tell how, I am all ears. Justify Sen. Dick Durbin's words on the Senate floor when he claimed that our men and women in uniform were no different than the Nazis that ran concentration camps, or the Soviet Union KGB which ran Soviet gulags.
or maybe you would like to justify Representative Murtha's (D) accuse Marines on live television and all over the media of cold blooded murder. Except one, whose trial is still going on, 8 out of the 9 have been foung not guilty. Where is the Democrat's leadership apology for claiming that our boys in uniform are murderers?!
Or maybe you would like to justify Pelosi and Reid's claims that Iraq was lost. They are eating their words right now!
Or maybe you would like to justify the Democrat's claim that Guantanamo Bay is this horrible prison for terrorists caught in the Middle East fighting against American soldiers. You know, a place where they are allowed to pray, are told what direction Mecca is, are given Korans, four meals a day, are allowed to play soccer and other sports. Are allow to see the Red Cross, etc, etc, etc.
Once again, I am unsure how you can claim that these scumbags who have lied about our troops some how have America's best interest at heart!
maybe I missed something. Maybe reporting on false accusations that our troops are desacrating the Koran, a report used by terrorists to then justify attacks on our troops means that Democrats truly care.
c'mon! please!
"Fut, I find your religion a brutally Satanic rape and dismemberment of the...Holy Bible" July 1, 2008 by Tracheostomy
I'm perfectly fine with you
July 4, 2008 - 00:18 ET by Cureboy675I'm perfectly fine with you thinking that a candidate I support doesn't have America's best interests at heart. Because I personally think John McCain doesn't have America's best interests at heart. I don't think he has the best vision for America. I think he has the wrong priorities
But it is quite a leap to go from saying a candidate has the wrong priorities to saying a candidate flat-out hates America. And, according to your narrow decisioning, the 47% (or whatever the newest poll says) of Americans favoring Barack Obama either A) hate America or B) have blinders on.
Essentially saying that half the population either hates the country they live in or are stupid to the point of incompetence. Either way, its incredible that, despite that rather large percentage, our country still hasn't come to a crashing halt.
Cureboy675,Yes, I
July 4, 2008 - 00:44 ET by futbolisgreat1Cureboy675,
Yes, I believe that the 47% or whatever the number of idiots that support Obama either hate America or have blinders on. What's your point?
Furthermore, I notice that you chose not to address the facts about the Democrat leadership and their attacks on our troops. why?
If I am wrong, honestly, show me how the Democrat actions and words about our troops shows that they have America's best interest at heart?
Wait and see, if Obama is elected to the Presidency, America will come to a crashing halt like it did during the Carter administration.
But maybe I am wrong. Here, prove me wrong. Maybe you can explain this about Obama.
Having friends, lauching his 1995 Illinois State Senator campaign from the house of the ex-leader of the 1960's radical, homew grown terrorist group the Weatherman Group, you know William Ayers. Who as of today has admitted that if he coudl do it all over again, he would have no problem bombing the Pentagon, Chicago Police Stations, Judges homes, cars, etc again.
Why is Obama best buddies with this man?
and dont' answer a question with anothere question. Like I said, maybe I am wrong, I am seeing things from the wrong perspective.
then explain why Obama has not visited Iraq in over two years, refused to meet with Gen. Petrause. While you are it, you can explain his flip-flop on Iraq.
you can also explain why Obama voted against a bill while USA Senator for Illinois that would forced murderers of babies (you know abortionist) save the life of a baby that survived an abortion. I guess this is very pro-American of him and I am just not seeing it.
then, go ahead and explain how he demands that we all conserve energy, that we stop driving SUVS and big cars. Yet, he gets shuttle around in huge SUVs, private jets, etc. Oh, and saying, "He has to" doesn't count.
Start with these four things. Maybe you can help me see things from a different point of view, right? I mean left. :-)
By the way, keep in mind, I am no McCain fan either. And remember, we are talking about Obama, don't bring anyone else to this.
Oh and try to address my points about the Democrat party leadeship and their comments about our troops, if you dare.
Prove to me that Obama and the Democrat party care about America. I swear that if you can prove to me that their actions and words show how they care about America, I will vote for Obama.
Start with Murtha's lie that our Marines are cold blooded muderers.

Upcountrywater, Thanks!!!
July 4, 2008 - 01:24 ET by futbolisgreat1Upcountrywater,
Thanks!!! I love this nation too much to not challenge Obamunists.
They need to prove that despite his assosiation and close friendship with William Ayers, Obama is pro-American. What Cureboy doens't realize is that I am from Chicago, I know the Obamas and I know the group he hangs around with. They are radical left wing nuts that do hate America. I graduated from UIC, I had William Ayers as a professor (oh yeah, this terrorist teaches at an American university. Scary as all hell. I would call his lies and hate for America constantly) Unfortunatly, the media is not interested in showing this side of Obama and the freaking Republicans, especially McCain, are not willing or don't have a clue how to put this fact out.
and it must have become an American value, to allow poor, innocent babies who survive an abortion to be left for death. Yes, Obama, so pro-American, what a caring individual. Those aborted babies who survived an abortion, but now can legally be left for death are thrilled and Cureboy can be sure that they would love to vote for Obama.
And hell yes! I am tired of people calling the Democrat party leadership pro-American and yet they can't explain Sen. DICK Durbin's comments on the Senate floor about our troops comparing our brave men and women in uniform to Nazi soldiers and KGB memebers that ran Soviet Gulags.
They can't explain Reid, Pelosi, etc claiming Iraq was lost and now, total silence from these fools.
They can't explain how their words have given ammunition to the terrorist to justify their murder of Americans. Democrats claimed that the Koran was being desacrated by our soldiers and this story was proven wrong. Yet, no Democrat politician apologized to our troops. However their words about this and about Abu Grab along with Durbin's words were used and are used by the terrorists against our troops. Democrats should be proud.
and nothing irks me more than Murtha's lie that our Marines in Haditha are cold blooded murderers. 8 out of the 9 have been found not guility. Yet no one on the Democrat party or the media has apologize to these men. Once again, how this is pro-American is beyond me, unless lying and slandering people have become an American value.
"Fut, I find your religion a brutally Satanic rape and dismemberment of the...Holy Bible" July 1, 2008 by Tracheostomy
Okay, well your first
July 4, 2008 - 01:11 ET by Cureboy675Okay, well your first paragraph tells me all I need to know. You already think people supporting Obama are idiots and/or hate America. So I know that no matter what I say, it will never convince you to vote for Obama.
(deep breath). Okay. Murtha. Did Murtha say all Marines are cold blooded murderers or was he referring to eight Marines involved in the Haditha massacre? I'll agree that he jumped to the wrong conclusion and spoke without knowing all the facts. But I'm not ready to assume that he hates the military or doesn't care about America.
Barack Obama. I will never say he's perfect. And I do not agree with him on everything. How can I convince you that he was right about his abortion vote or his "do as I say not as I do" energy plan when I don't even think he's right? But I tell you, I agree with him a whole heck of a lot more than I disagree with him. And I doubt I will ever find a candidate that I agree with 100% of the time (I came pretty close with Dennis Kucinich and we know how well that turned out)
You can accuse him of a flip-flop-flip on Iraq, but I still believe he wants to bring the majority of our troops home immediately and I think that's important. We can't have 100,000 U.S. troops babysitting Iraq for the next 100 years. And I whole-heartedly agree with him that Bush dropped the ball with Osama bin Laden. Almost 7 years after 9/11 and our great United States intelligence community can't find a tall man on kidney dialysis hiding in the mountains of Pakistan??
And I've already been through the Ayers thing on another thread so I'm not going to rehash it all again. Long story short: If I truly believed that Ayers was a powerful influence on Obama, or if Obama had the same beliefs as Ayers, I couldn't in good conscience vote for him. But I don't think that's the case. And nobody will ever convince me that Barack Obama hates America. Not in a million years.
But let me ask you a question (even though you've forbidden me from doing so). Do you honestly believe that Barack Obama hates America? And if so, I sure hope for the sake of this country and your family, that you are doing something about it.
Because I gotta tell ya, if I honestly believed that somebody who truly hated America had a decent chance of becoming the most powerful man in America, I would be busting my ass to make sure that man didn't become my president.
And I mean I would be doing something besides typing away on an Internet message board where 99% of the membership already agreed with me.
Okay. Its getting late for me and I need to get to bed. Have a good night.
In my own backyard and it
July 3, 2008 - 12:09 ET by ForeverOnTheRightIn my own backyard and it has nothing to do with gas prices, MSM. I've grown tired of fighting traffic after 10 minutes of fireworks display. It takes the fun out of this tradition. And no I do not think it makes me any less patriotic. Over the years I've seen people become more and more self-centered and rude. Or is it because Minnesota has become more and more liberal over the years and I am encountering whiny selfish rude liberals who are full of themselves? (Not that liberals are the only ones that fit that description, but it seems to be a much more often what I see these traits in liberals.)

July 3, 2008 - 15:55 ET by lnthompI live about 2 1/2 miles from Fort Vancouver, which bills its fireworks show as the largest in the NorthWest. Can't really see it from my house, so we'll be down there for the afternoon and evening.

Just hanging near home
July 3, 2008 - 16:09 ET by ricklailWhen we moved here 13 years ago we decided to drive to Atlantic Beach and spend the 4th there. Big mistake. We could not find a parking place at any of the public accesses on the Crystal Coast.
For the past 12 years we have just cooked up the dogs and burgers and took them to the park to meet with friends and listen to the 2nd Air Wing Band from Cherry Point put on a show. When it gets dark the fireworks are timed to the patriotic music that the band is playing. Boy those Marines know how to do it up right. To some this might sound dull but to me it is relaxing. (This park sits on a point where the Trent River dumps into the Neuse. They shot the fireworks off a barge sitting in the river.)
This has become a tradtion around this house. There is no way I am going to the beach on the 4th anymore.

July 3, 2008 - 18:05 ET by msh1973My mom lives on the river in Ft. Myers, we go over there every year, grill dogs, have baked beans, pot. salad and watch the fireworks (shooting off from a barge in the river). Tons of fun!
scooping poop!
July 3, 2008 - 21:13 ET by ort777I get to be in the parade - scooping horse poop! My third year in a row and let me tell you, the crowd loves it. I'm normally in an office all by myself all year but for the 4th, I'm in my glory with my shovel.
I will be working tomorrow.

My job's got this weird
July 4, 2008 - 02:53 ET by tracheostomyMy job's got this weird vacation policy that you build vacation hours over time, but it's a new PTO system and I'm still not sure how to cash in on it.
I got in-laws in TX and Virginia.

→ Tons of Vacation time
July 4, 2008 - 02:57 ET by Cool ArrowIve been with the same company for 34 years, so I've get 30 days vacation. In addition, I work 4 days @ 12 hrs followed by 4 days off.
I already get more than half my life off. No sense in considering early retirement.

Geez, 34 years. . .
July 4, 2008 - 03:04 ET by tracheostomyI'm easily impressed by details like that.
Because it took me half my life to figure out what I wanted to do and then settle down. I'm only on year 2, LOL! At least it's something I enjoy doing.
So are you going to stick it out past retirement then?

Thanks also for showing me the new feature, now can you change it back? LOL!

July 4, 2008 - 03:11 ET by Cool ArrowI will celebrate my health and ability as long as it is there.
We've picked up about 20 years of life expectancy since 1900. My kids don't owe me a living until I'm unable to care for myself. And though many people want to die broke, I'd rather leave something to my kids and grandkids.
BTW. Click on my profile and see if I'm still there.

metro area
July 4, 2008 - 12:09 ET by mwsasserAs great of a question as this is, I think it was created by someone who is stuck in a large metro area. Please remember those of us in fly-over country may not have a metro area to stay in. :-)
In fact, no matter how you suggest the question be used... saying metro area still annoys non-metro people. Even if someone suggests its just being used in a statistical sense.
