I can put it in terms of Ted
August 1, 2007 - 06:22 ET by sarcasmoI can put it in terms of Ted Stevens' professional-politician career, since that particular monstrosity far-exceeds your lifetime. By age 25, I knew who Ted Stevens was, and I knew Ted was a very big spender. A couple of decades+ later, yesterday's "he's gone" celebration finally-happened. I can't wait to drive south & party with Miami's Cubans when Fidel finally croaks, come to think of it, for many of the same reasons. It's fun for some people like me when big government takes a loss, and the 25 year old me would certainly agree, if I could return him from the mid '80s. Of course, he'd also be equal parts shocked & disgusted with both Ted's & Fidel's longevity in office if we let him in on the date! And for the record, much like Michael Vick, Senator Stevens is technically "innocent until proven guilty," even if there's a pretty high snicker-factor in both cases when I say that...

August 1, 2007 - 07:02 ET by UnsaneWell, that's up to the AK voters to make him "gone", isn't it?
Considering what they did last year to an unpopular governor in the primaries, that shouldn't be so hard.
(We can talk day and night about Sen. Stevens and him being The Devil if you wish, but if their names aren't Cornyn and Hutchison, there ain't much this voter can do.)

August 1, 2007 - 07:20 ET by sarcasmoYes, and since I've berated the Editor's Picks here, I'd have to be honest and say that today's pick of the WaPo politics-blog is quite good, and the reader comments are IMO (mostly) worth reading. Readers posting from Alaska seemed to be in the same "throw the rascals out" mood those beautiful Georgia special election voters were in a week or so ago. 66% of Alaskans are even against the Bridge to Nowhere! :)

But being in the majority in here is an honor because I know the caliber of my peers.
And regarding being "a certain age", a wise man (my spouse) once said: "Life is too short to eat food you don't like." and I'd have to add that life is too short to put up with idiots or morons and that's why I have so much fun in here. August 1, 2007 - 07:57 ET by UphillMy views come from the first time I got to vote in a presidential election. That was 1984 and I actually did research (without the internet, obviously). Myself and forty-nine states got it right that year.

August 1, 2007 - 08:06 ET by sarcasmoInteresting. My political awakening moment, if there was a single one, was a live TV viewing as a kid of Nixon's "I am not a crook" speech followed by a bunch of state & local Florida Democrat-corruption scandals in my local newspaper, but I wasn't able to vote for years.

August 1, 2007 - 08:11 ET by UphillI believe my parents shielded me from news about what went on in the 70's. I have absolutely no memory of knowing anything about Nixon or the Vietnam war during that time.
My current political views
August 1, 2007 - 08:50 ET by HelenSMy current political views are actually a result of my upbringing. I was raised in the mission field (East Africa) until I was 21, so was totally removed from anything political but I was raised by conservative Christians who taught me the value of having values and sticking to them. And recognizing them in others.
I also had the privelege of having a very cynical and sarcastic father. Consequently I have a life-long appreciation of the more curmudgeonly types which tend to be more in the conservative ranks.

August 1, 2007 - 09:56 ET by JohnMFor me, the evolution of my political understanding has been ongoing, and has only begun to be clear and somewhat defined over the past 15 years.

Stayed there until Billary - that's when I swung right and stayed. I knew I could never support a liberal agenda again.

August 1, 2007 - 13:33 ET by Ten7sInteresting poll and it does shed some light on participants at NB. One thing that might have made it more interesting would have been to set the age categories by generation (though not necessarily named). In this case the options would be roughly: 0-23, 24-43, 44-62, 63-82+. My guess is that around 90% would fall into the middle two categories w/ ~30% 24-43 and ~60% 44-62.
