Dunno About Depression...

Depends on where you are and how employed you are and if you got suckered into a home you couldn't afford, I guess...

We're fine in my part of the midwest. Expecting a booming year.

Whatever this is, though, guaranteed it was created by the government, whether intentional or not...

Same in Arizona as midwest

We're about the same as your midwest..., depending on the neighborhood you live in, though.

The epicenter of the mortgage debacle is about 10 miles from where I live.  I've seen foreclosure papers from parts of Mesa where the same home was bought, sold, and foreclosed a half dozen times or more in an eight year period

And I agree, the mess was government created and the administration is doing its best to make things worse

Economic Depressions: Their Cause and Cure

Economic Depressions: Their Cause and Cure (Murray N. Rothbard, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Economics)

"What is the governmental role in the cure of depression? In the first place, government must cease inflating as soon as possible. It is true that this will, inevitably, bring the inflationary boom abruptly to an end, and commence the inevitable recession or depression. But the longer the government waits for this, the worse the necessary readjustments will have to be. The sooner the depression-readjustment is gotten over with, the better. This means, also, that the government must never try to prop up unsound business situations; it must never bail out or lend money to business firms in trouble. Doing this will simply prolong the agony and convert a sharp and quick depression phase into a lingering and chronic disease. The government must never try to prop up wage rates or prices of producers' goods; doing so will prolong and delay indefinitely the completion of the depression-adjustment process; it will cause indefinite and prolonged depression and mass unemployment in the vital capital goods industries. The government must not try to inflate again, in order to get out of the depression. For even if this reinflation succeeds, it will only sow greater trouble later on. The government must do nothing to encourage consumption, and it must not increase its own expenditures, for this will further increase the social consumption/investment ratio. In fact, cutting the government budget will improve the ratio. What the economy needs is not more consumption spending but more saving, in order to validate some of the excessive investments of the boom. Thus, what the government should do, according to the Misesian analysis of the depression, is absolutely nothing. It should, from the point of view of economic health and ending the depression as quickly as possible, maintain a strict hands off, "laissez-faire" policy. Anything it does will delay and obstruct the adjustment process of the market; the less it does, the more rapidly will the market adjustment process do its work, and sound economic recovery ensue." - Murray N. Rothbard, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Economics

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is Not Pollution

Barney Frank and Soros created 2008 recession

but...

OBAMA will give us the GREATEST DEPRESSION.

Wake up America!!!!

Greatest Depression

I've been worried we are on the way toward the Greatest Depression for quite a while now. Sometime in around 2 years the Porkulus money will start flooding the market. When too many dollars are chasing too few goods the result is always inflation. If foreign interests quit buying our debt then we may see hyper-inflation as the Fed simply prints the money making it worth less. Obama has already promised much higher energy costs and the Dems already put the brakes on off-shore drilling in order to "save the planet." This combination has the possibility of creating Hyper-stagflation where we will have zero or negative economic growth with Hyper-inflation.
Well at least Jimmy Carter lived long enough to see he won't be remembered as the absolute worst president ever.
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants - Thomas Jefferson

Whatever

Traditional definitions of recession and depression have been rejected for political reasons. Words lose their meaning when one party takes control of the media. History loses its meaning when liberals are the only accepted writers of history. Our ability to discuss politics is being corrupted by bias.

This recession was worse

This recession was worse than the past two but not as severe as the one in the late 1970's/early 1980's.

However, recovery has been delayed because of Obama's irresponsible rhetoric and fiscal actions since taking office.

With enormous spending now and ahead of us, inflation will stifle any growth and we will experience double digit unemployment and further declines.

mattm...

Went to log off after posting right below you and saw your link to the cartoon.  Clicked on it, and then...

Gadzooks!  It was drawn for today, wasn't it?  Eerie is an understatement.  Prophetic would be more like it.

Yikes.  (shivers)

I cannot believe this...by the way...I see they even had old Ickes there...same old same old...nothing changes with the enemy within...same old agenda.

Stunned!

Incredible similarities! Thanks for posting this..too bad we can not learn from history...

Eerie is an understatement!

I'm tempted to opine that the first time didn't work so they are trying it again. Nahhh. Couldn't be. Could it?

Keep your eyes and ears open for the bill in the house that abolishes the 22nd Amendment (Presidential term limit). None of the tea parties and economic bail-out protests are really being covered nationally and the recent polls sound like that are cooked on Rahm Emmanuel's stove. It seems like Obama's approval rating is being artificailly goosed. Must be for some reason...

Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!

Re 22nd Amendment

That would be House bill H.J. Res 5, introduced Jan. 5, 2009 by Jose Serrano (D-NY-16). Presently referred to the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties. Not much chance of it passing but they can only try.

First choice: Number 3, but

First choice: Number 3, but then Number 1 will happen and won't help at all.

I do believe things will work themselves out, if left alone.  However, of course, Obama will get credit for "saving America", and then the financial backlash will set in from his economic tomfoolery, and things will get worse than ever.

I hope you guys like beans and rice.

I've been depressed I've

I've been depressed I've been in a recession for almost 2 yrs now.  I'm so sick of eating beans, and so is my colon...

Today, I said, "To Hell With It!! I'm buying 1/4 of a steer..." (from my friend who has a cattle ranch).  I can't wait for those T-bones....

We will be if Obama gets his

We will be if Obama gets his way on taxes and economic policy

I am not sure if we will go into a full blown depression rivaling the 30's but we are headed into the worst recession/depression since then if  Obama and the punch drunk congress doesnt stop their spending.  Spending is not bad but they are borrowing money we will takes decades to pay back if at all.

I hear many different policies and suggestions and after about 1 minute go slack jaw and drool.  I do know one thing that if the spending is not controlled and we operate under a budget within our means then we will go under.  That is why many businesses and houeholds go under and fail or go bankrupt.

But how does a country go bankrupt?  And who does the USA go to if it goes bankrupt?  Of course with our military might, hopefully we will have some after Obiwan, we can say to teh rest of teh world we forgive our debt.  And we go on.

When we conservatives take teh country back with a coup perhaps we will say that to the rest of the world.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Depress? Recess? Nonsense

I agree with those of of lucky to be in flyover country.  I'm in Sioux City, Iowa, and own a very small business.  But- this year is going to be my biggest ever in the 8.5 years I've been in business.  By a large number as well.  We're lucky to be smack dab in the middle of the the two coasts.   Just think- when California drops into the ocean, it will be kind of life a gangrenous arm falling off its host.  All of a sudden things start looking a little better for the rest of the body.

Wasn't it Ronald Reagan who

Wasn't it Ronald Reagan who said, "A recession is when your neighbor is out of work and a depression is when you're out of work."?

Chris...

I forgot about that...thanks for cheering me up after watching two maddening segments on Dobbs.

bt,

Uh-oh. Has Dobbs, who lately has sort of stayed towards the right, now decided he has to prove his "Mr. Independent" status by tacking back towards the left?

Chris...

Oh no-no-no...he was fine indeed..I think you may have missed a thread I posted elsewhere...I'll try to find it soon.

Anyway, he was great, it was Sharpton and the gal from ACORN, plus the following segment with his panel and Joe Madison made me want to scream...as usual.

Catch it on the internet later if you can Chris...

I was a 'maybe' vote. lol

Perhaps this is some good news but my hubby and I have had a surging influx of work recently.

Keep your nippers up, America.

God bless our soldiers and the USA.

Delia

  What is a nipper?

sherylsims, "Nipper"

I think the term, "Keep your nipper up" is akin to "Keep your head held high and a stiff upper lip". My grandparents always told me that so it's probably a bit old-fashioned nowadays. Funny because I've used that saying and passed it on to my daughter and yet I googled it and couldn't find one reference! :)

Never heard of it.

Are you British? It kindof sounds British, you know, pip pip cheerio...nippers up!

sheryl, I do have English [Brits] in my lineage...

...perhaps that's where it originates from? It was from my Irish/English Grandparents that used that phrase with me so you might be on to something there! So funny that you brought it up to me because I've never been asked about that before and never gave it a second thought. Now you have me curious as to where it originally 'sprouted' from. Strange how you can grow up thinking something is 'common' and then find out it's just not so! :)

Now you have your homework

It certainly is a British sentiment at least. I wouldn't doubt it was originated from some combination of Knickers and nipples.  But you should probably check that out... I could be wrong.

sheryl, knickers and nipples?! LOL!

Now that has me guffawing out loud [oops, don't want to wake the hubby up he-he]!

I wish my grandparents were still alive...this would indeed be a very interesting subject to bring up to them and I would be curious as to their 'official' answer as to the meaning. Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm. :))

Delia -- in Brit English, a "nipper" is a child.

I've never heard the expression "keep your nipper up" -- but the UK has so many dialects and regional slang, that  it may well be said somewhere in the UK.

Jack Bauer, interesting...

Thank you for the info! I always assumed "Keep your nipper up" meant "Keep your chin up" or something like that.

Nipper = Child! Hey, I learned something new today thanks to you! :D

So is the term 'bloke' derogatory or friendly? -And, is 'blimey' a swear word or just Brit slang? I know, I know...too many questions this early in the day.

"bloke" is just a word for

"bloke" is just a word for a male, like guy, geezer, chap, fellow/feller -- mainly Brit, Australian, South African, NZ English, probably India too.

Blimey -- is an expression of surprise -- like Gosh, Sheesh, etc. Not a swear word today, but it may have started out a substitute to do with "Jesus"??

I just remembered it may come fromn "Blind Me, Jesus". But don't quote me...

ADDENDUM 2

Now dredging my memory, the whole expression is cockney "Cor Blimey" -- which I'm sure was originally "God, blind me"

Jack B., you are cool beans!

Thank you for allowing me to pick your brain. I find little tidbits like this rather fun to learn/know. My husband often asks me questions about things like this [I kid you not] and so I like having answers to his oddball queries. he-he! He's [husband] Italian-German and we both recently learned that "cioppino" [the Italian fish soup] is not an Italian word but was a mispronounced word by an Italian fisherman who was trying to pronounce "chip in" but ended up saying "chip-in-oh". Go figure?!

Just ....

For the dunces who clicked this: "What is a depression as opposed to a recession?" ... Damn!

my goodness,it'$ the $$$

just like when jim'a was selling the U.S. out ,we get a new pillager-in chief , who has all the olde pillagers from before, back in the game "Judas"?
