I voted the leaders, but there should have been one that said,  "All of the Above."  since it hasn't been just one thing.  The Congress, that tried to out-Democrat the Democrats, was the real culprit.

On the bright side, however, I believe the Democrats misread the vote that got them in as being supportive of their policies.  Obviously, those that didn't show up, were upset with the way Republicans were spending like they knew what they were doing. Can anyone say,  "The Bridge to No-where"?  Let's never forget, however, the power of the media since, the bridge to nowhere was never built.

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

The only good I am to the Republicans is

my vote and my money.  That's all they want from Lebowski.  Not my opinions, advice or direction.  So just like a restaurant where I receive bad service or food, I take my business away from them.

This is what I have done with the Republicans.  They embarrass me.  They have let the Dims like Reid and Pelosi push them around now for almost 8 years.  Bush has rolled over on his tough talk leadership post 9/11 and is now letting North Korea off the hook and is offering diplomatic relations with those terrorists in Iran.  Not to mention that the Repubs expect me to vote for an enemy to conservatives in November??  Note to Repubs (if you care), I don't vote for Democrats from either party!

Right's Misfortunes

I believe your comment: "The Congress, that tried to out-Democrat the Democrats" is pretty much the main issue. Their lack of principle led to their failure as leaders; which led to their grabbing the loot and running. But Repubs failed miserably in even coming close to the Dems in one category that is absolutely critical in our 'image-is-everything' media age: energy, combativeness, hyperbole.

While the GOP had the majority in Congress, any time Republicans tried to present anything remotely conservative, the Kennedys, Rangels, and Schumers jumped on their desks and shouted "outrageous; heinous; desipicable." And the Repubs were cowed into passivity. Frist & Hastert lacked the heart & guts to put up a fight, so they took the favors, bribes, and other filthy lucre, and then meekly abandoned ship.

Our feeble presidential candidate has appropriated one left-wing tactic - the Alice in Wonderland re-defining of anything ugly or nasty to make it pretty and honorable. McCain has re-imagined cowardice into the quality of a "Maverick". When Republicans had a lock on judicial nominees, and only had to exercise the 'nuclear option' to eliminate jucidial nominee filibusters, and get solid conservatives on the federal benches, McCain took the coward's way out and collaborated with Dems in the "Gang of 14" to insure solid conservatives did not get onto federal courts. He collaborated with Kennedy on the "Kennedy McCain Amnesty Act". And now he's collaborating with delusional environmentalists, insisting that we deny debate on the cause of global warming, and joining Dems in declaring a frigid, empty, lifeless polar wasteland to be "pristine" and off limits to oil well drilling. ANWR is the absolute best location in the world to drill, as far separate from humans and susceptible environment as possible, and yet McCain once again allows the left to not only set the agenda, but to determine how the agenda will be discussed and what the outcome will be.

The "kinder & gentler, compassionate conservatism" of Georges I & II are the timid euphemisms for the passivity of timid men who
pretend they can turn a nasty, threatening world into Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Republicans are being beat over the head, over and over, with a "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" opportunity with the price of oil & gas, and the depression that will be brought about when jobs disappear because of petroleum caused inflation. They have an unbelievable opportunity to demonstrate leadership and create massive separation between themselves and the Dems, but this bellwether moment is being lost in the  GOP leaders' slumber. And if they even awaken from their power & greed induced stupor, what we get is flatulence like the "gas tax holiday" and cap and trade taxes.

The GOP needs some fighters, but we don't have them in place yet. There are some - the Inhofes & DeMints - who have the courage to speak out and bear the brunt of the hostile left. The future leaders like Bobby Jindal will be able to build on the foundation these courageous men are creating; so the hope is that the Obama experience will be as the Carter experience - 1 term of malaise and disastrous appointments to the Courts.

Amen, selahgreene!

The GOP themselves

I realize Dems do this too, and it is a double standard, but the GOP has been good for a while now, but all the sex scandals they had, especially for the party of morals.

The out of control spending while they had the majoirty in congress and a 29 percent approval rating for the President does not help much either

I'm talking within the past 5 yrs CA. That is when the GOP really started to sink in polls and lost alot of their power and influence right?

Yes there was Spitzer and the Detroit Mayor. I realize it is not fair, but i'm just saying it is more important for repubicans to practice what they preach, because they are the party of morals.

Some folks can dish it out but cannot take it

OK, Shawn

But when a Barney Frank, or a Willim Jefferson, gets caught, their constituents reelect them.

Republicans are more prone to expect a higher standard.

Your logic seems to automatically forgive malfeasance as long as the culprit gets reelected.

Spitzer resigned, I will

Spitzer resigned, I will wait to see what will happen with the Detroit Mayor.

As far as sex scandals go, I could care less if someone sees a prostitute in their own time. however if they strongly oppose prostitution that makes them a huge hypocrite. ie Spitzer. Or strongly supporting abstinence and having happy endings...ie David Vitter. Or Mark Foley writing child predator laws.

Nothing bothers me more than hypocrisy, that applies to both parties

The pubic has lost confidence in the GOP and they are desperate for change, I realize Obama might be misleading them, but the public just wants to new leadership, especially on the Presidential front

Democrats can't

have money and Republicans can't have sex

Come on Matt

Not sure what you are implying, but where in the world did I say anything like that?.

I don't know that Democrats are saying you can't have money. Again, I could care less if a Republican has straight sex, gay sex, married sex, unmarried sex, prostitution sex. It would not matter to me at all. However if the certain politician trys to condemn others for their behavior while doing the same thing. ie Newt Gingrich was criticizing Clinton, while having and affair of his own, that is hypocrisy.

Some folks can dish it out but cannot take it

Now that you brought him up...

Are you kidding me?  Clinton (Hillary's life-partner) is the hypocrite par excellence.  The media smokescreens aside, the whole Lewinsky scandal was the result of an investigation focused on alleged sexual harassment, which, as typical for his ilk, is habitual.  In the meantime, it is also his ilk that is responsible for establishing the stringent sexual harassment laws that came back to bite him on the ass.

"I could care less if a Democrat wants to make inappropriate sexual advances on female subordinates half his age.  However, if the certain politician trys to condemn others [and puts his money where his mouth is by establishing punitive laws which eventually lead to him being caught with his own pants down], that is hypocrisy."

The difference, which other NB posters correctly point out, is that Clinton was exonerated, even rewarded (his life-partner getting a seat in the U.S. Senate), for his behavior by the leftist media and congress.

They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.  Matt. 23:4

GOP Lost Nerve?

They lost their nerve when conserving our sovereignty as a nation and as a people clashed with the bottom line outlook of country club republicans.

They are against economic nationalism, and all for an economy specifically tailored for their interests.

They have put all their eggs in the China basket and then spiced it all up with resistance to realistic regulation of banks, mortgages and Wall Street's hegemony.

Now they go looking for bailouts for their Humpty Dumpty banks and wonder how long they can keep their operations in China profitable while transport costs have gone up 150% and wages rise 10% to 30% a year.

Meanwhile all that saves us from a complete rout in the next election is the degree of two-faced backsliding of Obama himself, and the democrats allergic reaction to the very notion of drilling for oil.

I'm with "Both"

I see an ossified party which rejects and is therefore increasingly rejected by young people. McCain's likely to lose the first of many losing elections for Republicans because of it. Talks I've seen this weekend at The Last HOPE confirm my beliefs, especially "Grand Theft Lazlow - Hacking the Media by Laughing at Them." GTA's "Weasel News" parodies keep coming true on the real Fox News. I'm sure some GOP "leaders" will also try to claim it's all the libertarians' fault when they blow this election, but they're reaping as they've sown via basic issues like spending too damn much.

GOP has lost its moral compass

The Repubs are an embarrassment in so many ways and levels. One they began to act and behave exactly like the Dems. I think there is a fundamental problem with having people become career politicians. After only a short time in Washington D.C. people begin to act like they are some kind of rock star or royalty and are no longer accountable to anyone but their own ambitions and some kind of misguided Party line. They are there at our pleasure. They are to go there to serve the people of their State and Districts.  Term limits would eliminate about 75% of the problem. Even after one of them falls on their sword they stay there and become lobbiest or worse, advisors to the next batch of ingrates we send in. The GOP is the worst about throwing one of their own under the bus too. When a Dem gets caught doing something, they circle the wagons and stick by their own. Let a Repub get caught doing something and if you even find another Repub he or she is jockying to take the fallen members position. When GWB needs support where the hell were most of the Repubs; hiding under their desks with the exception of Kyle and a few others. Hell, even Lieberman is more of a support than most GOPers. For so long we had Trent Lott and his corn-poned a$$ shuffling along in lock step with the Dems on most things. "Jez tryin to get along, ya'll". The other thing aggrevating is the GOP trying to nuzzle up to the press and the MSM, hoping they will one day like them. Paralysis by analysis has been a major disease of the Republican Party. Time to clean house and start over with Americans who love their country more than their Party.

As a "young conservative" I

As a "young conservative" I think it's basically all of the above. I look at the Republican party and I rarely see anyone who represents persons like myself. All the good guys are shoved away in the corner. What happened to having a backbone and standing up for the good? What happened to no more big government? Lower/overhauled taxes? The ability for small businesses to band together for affordable healthcare? What about overhauling social security? Wasn't that supposed to be optional?

In addition, I don't think the Republicans reach out to the younger voters. During the early Primary season, as an independant, I received attention/flyers from the Democrats and none from the Republicans. Way to say young voters don't matter!

Not a great showing by the

Not a great showing by the Repubs. However, I seem to recall after the 2006 midterms, the RNC was pretty close to broke (financially, that is.) They may still be trying to dig their way out of that hole. Could someone confirm my recollection, please?

As an Old Repulican

As an old (Conservative) Republican, I feel the same way. Senate and House Reps should be standing up and demanding the resignation/expulsion of crooks like Jefferson, Reid, Murtha and Durban!  They should trumpet their outrage from the rooftops, and stand on THEIR desks and denounce Dem bills that seek to garner still more power to the Government, or worse, threaten National Security and Sovereignty.

I, too,  regret having contributed to the RNC during the last cycle.  Everytime I get a call or "opinion poll" I tell them the same thing:  let the Republicans grow some spine and CONFRONT the Dhimmis, THEN I'll consider dropping another dime to them!

The Republicans had a

The Republicans had a perfect opportunity to do just that when Newt was in charge and the Contract was being pushed. Unfortunately, there were far too many middle-of-the-road "Republicans" that were more concerned with their own media coverage than doing what's right. The fact that John McCain is now the presumptive nominee for the Republican party speeks volumes as to the state of the Conservative movement in America. The fire still burns in many American souls as it does in mine, but I fear there are far too few of us left who can see through the sheep's clothing of tyranny.

I would have to disagree. The topic of the thread could be about cute puppies, and the subject will turn into Why Democrats like b*tches in heat. Yes that was hyberbole and I realize the mission statement of thi site is, but not many post get through without blaming the msm or the liberals.

I also disagree with your assessment about blaming the GOP and holding them accountable. When I first joined this site, I saw nothing but praise and good things said about our President. throughout the war, the attorney firings etc. It was not until his immigration debacle that I started seeing strong criticism from members.

The candidate that I would say most members of this site backed, Fred Thompson did not get the nomination, because republicans did not vote for him, they voted for McCain who many consider weak kneeded and jellied spined. From what I recall many members blamed that on the liberals and msm as well.

I Wonder...

I put down that the GOP leadership has lost their ambition and conservatism, but I have to wonder about what Rush Limbaugh has suggested. He has put forth the notion that the blue-blood country club, corporate leader types "hate" the true conservatives and the religious right having too much influence in the party in the past.

I'll take this a step further and suggest that the party may be willing to "throw away" 2008 with the idea that the rest of the populace will see how bad for the nation the Democrats are and with little effort on the party's part, sweep the Republicans back into power in 2010 without having to court or pander to conservatives and the religious as they have in the past.

WC... I have to

WC...

I have to respectfully disagree with your last paragragh...

The GOP party isn't pandering to the conservative base at all..in fact they are poking us in the eye every chance they get...it has been said more than once that they do not need us...they want the middle, the so-called Independents....and hopefully some dems...

they are making a big mistake.

Whether McCain wins or loses...the conservatives will be coming back with a vengnece...one way or the other...possibly by 2010...for sure by 2012....and the GOP will realize they have made a mighty big mistake once again...their base damned well needs us...along with the religious faction.

I’ve always thought Conservatives were just too darn nice. They don’t fight fire with fire. A large number of Democrats/Liberals are from protected voting areas and know they can say just about anything without impunity. That said, another large batch of these people on the left were not raise with the same set of manners and character that Conservatives generally are. Nancy Pelosi says some of the most hateful things about the President of the United States on national television and when a Conservative is asked about it they just say we don’t want to get into name-calling or some other weak response. As a life-long conservative I’m sick of being associated with such a large group of wimps.

Nice, guys.

The problem is the cowardly

The problem is the cowardly "leadership" of the Republican Party.  You have a Democrat-led Congress with a 9% Approval Rating, gas prices that have doubled since Reid, Pelosi and Company have taken the reins and a housing/financial market that has virtually collapsed under the weight of crooks like Schmuckie Schumer...yet the Republicans are unwilling or unable to attack on these issues.  Instead, you've got economically illiterate, incompetent gasbags like Arnold Schwarzenegger demanding to expand their brand of failure nationally...as if screwing up one State didn't create enough damage.  This is the perfect opportunity for the Republican Party to reclaim its authority, to appeal to the base that elected this "leadership"...yet the party is propping up losers like Pawlenty, Crist, Schwarzenegger and McCain.  What a wasted opportunity!

Who is to blame.

All of the above. Since the Republican Party controlled both houses of Congress and decided to out Democrat the Democrats I have been telling them every time I was given the chance that I felt like Zell Miller. “I didn’t leave my party, my party left me.”  My comment to them was always that I thought the party had abandon its principles and lost all intestinal fortitude under the leadership of Trent Lott et al. I am a life long Republican and have supported their causes with my time, money and my vote, but will hence forth reconsider that. I may again support them when Republicans decide to stand for some thing besides reelection.

Conservative and their agenda? What is that?

The MSM has so abused its resources and special position to shape the perception and discussion of current events that honest unfettered discussion of politics has been significantly distorted and choked off. It would have been interesting if that Pew News test that we took yesterday had asked if Bush stole the election of 2000, or if he had “lied” in justifying the invasion of Iraq when he claimed that Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction. The trouble is now there is simply no way to appraise objectively such matters. The MSM has so distorted, manipulated, and abused the facts that you cannot even reach huge swaths of the population about what the real facts are. And don’t get me started on how the MSM, along with Hollywood and our education system, have upended our social institutions through their manipulations. Yes, there is, for the time being, Rush Limbaugh and some others on talk radio; and that is helpful for those who care to huddle around their radio. But as far as reaching the average Joe is concerned – the average Joe, who is just trying to get by, and not scrutinizing the way information is fed to him – there is simply no way for him to be exposed fairly to information that does not conform to the MSM’s liberal/leftist agenda. Someone is kidding himself if he thinks, under the circumstances, a conservative of any stripe has a fair chance of getting their view heard and voted upon.

There are altogether too many media pawns, who have no idea that they are constantly being manipulated. And these media pawns vote just as much as anyone else.

Media

I too chose the liberal media because there were plenty of conservatives out there in the primaries. The media stroked the McCain campaign and he came back from nowhere to grab that nomination. There are always going to be centrists running but with McCain/Feingold, it's going to be a lot tougher to get a conservative on the ticket unless he campaigns with what he stands for. All of the above is a good answer but Liberal Media is the main reason in my opinion.

Same here. Where do the lot

Same here. Where do the lot of us, generally speaking, get our information on current events?  In the past, under different guises, it's been variously called mind-control, programming, propaganda, brainwashing, etc.  I'm not saying the media are evil incarnate, or that they don't ever report objectively or truthfully, but nobody here can deny that there isn't a left-leaning bias, one that has slowly changed the political and sociological landscape.  Over the course of about 50 short years, mainstream Western moral principles have been abandoned; today's "neoconservatives" end up looking bad, unhip, hypocrytical, out-of-touch, archaic, anachronistic, repressed, unenlightened, bigoted, close-minded, etc., qualities that don't lend themselves to gaining votes.

I voted for GOP top

I voted for GOP top leaders, they've lost their ambition and conservatism.

I believe they're too damned worried about clinging to the great DC virtue of being "Bipartisan"...good grief I absultely hate this word!  Oh, and we all know that being bipartisan in Washington means doing what the Dems want!  They need to start rejecting Democrat/Liberal premises on their face! For example: 1) AGW, 2) "We can't drill our way of this energy crises..." 3) why the Feds "can't afford to cut taxes..." etc.

Instead of rejecting these bogus premises by the libs, what do our Country Club, Bluebloods do?  They come up with a pseudo conservative way to address these issues (i.e. proposing that we lower the speed limit to 55 mph, providing rebate checks, continuing to push solar and wind power etc.  Since they don't reject the premises of the bogus arguments, they give weight to them.

I think that we need term limits...especially for these arrogant Senators. I believe it's time for the likes of Warner, Hatch, Specter and Bluebloods to step down and let young CONSERVATIVES who aren't afraid of a fight to step in before this country is completely socialized by the libs!

Vote for me and I'll vote against all spending!

That will be my campaign slogan when I run for congress. We need more people to get elected who will stop spending like drunken socialites without their panties. We need congressmen and women to go to Washington and push back against the politics as usual.... and I mean for real.

I'm going to run eventually, but I'll probably lose since I refuse to lie to get elected. I'll tell the truth. I won't fight for equal rights, I won't fight for clean air, I won't fight for safe food, I'll fight for free markets which will force those afore mentioned issues to happen far better than any bloated expensive bureaucracy could ever do... I will fight for freedom... and freedom from government is what we need more than anything else at the moment.

To start, I believe that a Constitutional ammendment should be put in place to limit the terms of Congress. After all, there is one for the Pres. I am with you on spending, but that is not the exact platform to run on. People do not like extremes. Would this help clean up Washington, D.C.? I hope so. It is every two for the House...Six for the Senate...it is up us us as individuals to know who we are voting for each time...changing it the way you want if possible...it's not going to make one iota of difference ..you cannot mandate idoidciy anymore than we already have.

It is up to us!

Nothing more..nothing less.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

I forgot whose tagline it

I forgot whose tagline it was, but something to the effect, the moment politician becomes a career choice is the day we need to take back the republic. My starting point would be something like 2 terms each in the House and Senate. Unfortunately, the general population is not well informed about the candidates and what they stand for and this is why we have career politicians like Kennedy. (He is not my target, btw) The Founders would never have thought that someone would spend 42 years in the Senate because they would naturally assume they would need to take care of their home and family. This has changed greatly with the advent of air transportation. You can be home in a matter of a few hours instead of days or weeks.

If there are no high ranking

If there are no high ranking members of the RNC who read this, the entire contents of these posts should be sent to them.  If they truly care about who we are and what we think, its all right here.

I almost voted for the

I almost voted for the first one, but I don't really think that it's ambition and conversatism they've lost.  They lost their b@llsIn some strange belief that they too can be loved by the media, the GOP has stopped stating what we believe.  I think the leadership is all looking for that Sally Fields' moment, "You like us, you really like us!" that is never going to come.  I think until they grow a pair and start attacking the Democrats on theissue, the broken promises, and the overall inability to lead, we are all screwed.

A major problem is THE CHRISTIAN RIGHT...

A major problem is THE CHRISTIAN RIGHT. While it is not the sole problem it is more significant than any other. Now let me make clear, I AM A CHRISTIAN, i.e. born again, believe on Christ as Savior. So critics of this comment who want to dismiss it as someone antagonistic to Christianity, there is a plank you can walk very quickly.

The Christian right made a drastic and fundamental mistake that is hurting the Republican party and conservatives today. And that is expecting and demanding that GOOD POLITICAL LEADERS in our party hold to specific Christian beliefs and doctrines. First on that list is the teaching, either direct or indirect, that a good leader or one a faithful Christian can vote for MUST BE a born again Christian or say words equivilent to that such as "I believe in Jesus as my Savior" or minimally attend an Evangelical church.

WRONG...WRONG...WRONG. And today poisonous minds like Dobson keep his well trained sheep from good reason and voting for able leaders because of this sycophantic necessity.

A good LEADER understands principles of freedom and justice. That is what a good leader does. A good leader understands the necessity of internal and external security for a nation. Being BORN AGAIN doesn't insure any of this. You can be born again all day long and not understand the economy, international diplomacy, the necessity of military action and constitutional imperatives.

Christian conservatives had the privilege of two Presidents that spoke similar language regarding their faith. Great, but that isn't what makes a GREAT PRESIDENT. It is a man or woman that understands the principles of freedom and what it takes for a nation to survive. That is NOT an exclusve right or capacity for Christians.

And to worsen this ideological error the Christian right leaders have emphasized how God will bless in a special way a President who IS a Christian. Pal, the Bible teaches that ALL officials of a state are ministers whether they believe in God or not. They are blessed by God by DEFAULT when they do what is right and seek to preserve freedom and justice. It is a defacto work of God on their behalf.

We have sound thinking leaders in the GOP that have been ignored or minimized because of the sectarian religious demands of the Dobsons, Robertsons, Reeds and formerlly Falwell. Well buddies, go ahead and cling to one or two issues such as abortion while a LEFTY LIB is voted in office because YOU refused to support a better and more qualified GOP nominee all because he doesn't hold to your specific religious views. And then when the nation is suffering with Carter-like inflation and crumbling economy, a decimated military and genuine depression like conditions, your special interest won't really matter because you won't be able to afford the luxury of your positions and protests. Instead you'll be greatful for a sound thinking leader regardless of his or her faith. God blesses ministers of the state when they do right, whether they are a believer in Christ as Savior or not! Get a clue.

I agree with your

I agree with your conclusion but for a different reason, that is, the "Christian Right" has for the most part substituted political activism for evangelism. Like all nations that God in His wisdom has raised up and brought down, this one too eventually has an end (Jeremiah 50 & 51). "Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people" Proverbs 14:34

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31

I don't disagree with that

I don't disagree with that view either. But since that wasn't so much the reason for the party's problems supporting a candidate rather than the problems within the church itself, I didn't present that dimension of my thoughts. I do agree with your position on that end of the matter.

I placed my vote on number

I placed my vote on number 1 with this modification, "They have placed their ambition ahead of their conservatism."

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31

GOP Leadership

There is a distinction between the GOP & Conservatives and the leadership are not conservative.

I have heard several of the leaders & former leaders (trent-the-hairdoodoo) and I wonder what they atre doing on our side of the isle. They are the clowns that gave us MacNasty.

How did we ever come to such a situation???

Its funny how this site

Its funny how this site wants to blame liberals for their misfortune...

If you look up liberal in the dictionary you will see openminded.

Closed minded thinking from the administration and its loyal followers was the real downfall of the new neoconservative party!
