September 4, 2008 - 11:09 ET by taterI gave it a home run...she did what she had to do, introduce herself, give her platform, and took a shot at the MSM, then exceeded their low expectations.
I'm looking forward to the grand slam when she takes on Biden.

September 4, 2008 - 11:16 ET by Dan The Man 2I said a homer also although it was a dang good speech and Palin is defitely a contender. I see her running in 2012 when McCain steps down because he is 76, age will be a big issue and if not 2016. It will be a granslam when they elect McCain.

September 4, 2008 - 13:01 ET by dscottI gave her a home run as well, due to the overall presentation, but what would have made it a grand slam would be to shed the school teacher look. We need to toughen her appearance up a little with the hair style and glasses.

No argument on substance
September 4, 2008 - 15:27 ET by dscottNo argument on substance but she also has to convince the public that if she goes toe to toe with the likes of the Mad Hatter of Iran or Putin of Russia, that she will have no fear in her eyes. We know Obambi will cry like a scared little kid. That is a stereotype that women have to work against, the lack of toughness. What she has to protray is that pitbull with lipstick! She has the physical jaw line to pull that off. She needs to show she has the mettle of Maggie Thatcher. The voters need to know if anything (terrorism) were ever to happen on her watch she would be as fearsome/terrifying as a mother bear protecting her cubs.

September 4, 2008 - 11:11 ET by SchnikeysI'll call Palin's speech a triple. Only actions that yield excellent results and are based on conservative values get grand slams and home runs, not speeches.

September 4, 2008 - 11:19 ET by TuariI agree with you, however, the question was to rate the speech. I rated it a Grand Slam, because she was able to pick up without a teleprompter without missing a heartbeat and make even some left of center commentators (Andrea, Mika) spout praise. The poll was to rate Palin's speech last night, and in that scope it deserves a Grand Slam. Rate Sarah Palin as a whole including speech and actions? We'll know in the coming weeks, I'm aiming my preliminary thoughts high though.
she did use a teleprompter
September 4, 2008 - 12:32 ET by pbdmillerShe did use a teleprompter, but I don't care. I gave her a grandslam. I stayed up way past bedtime to hear this woman and I was very impressed.
Did anyone notice the big deal some media commentators made about "the speech was written for her." Big Deal, like Obama writes his own speeches. Gimme a break! You never hear that point being made when he delivers a good speech.
Bravo, Sarah Palin, Bravo!
It broke
September 4, 2008 - 12:42 ET by ArcherBThey started having problems with the telepropter about halfway through her speech. That's why I gave it a grand slam instead of just a homer.

September 4, 2008 - 11:19 ET by Dan The Man 2Only actions that yield excellent results and are based on conservative values get grand slams and home runs, not speeches - Lame the question was specifically about the speech and from teh MSM comments and look of teh yellow stripes on their backs they are scared. All this makes it a hommer at least. BTW there were no expectations but if there were it would still be a homer.

The Speech
September 5, 2008 - 17:07 ET by SchnikeysTrust me, Dan- I know that the question was about the speech. But I wasn't willing to give lavish praise over something that people tend to hang onto too much these days.
Did she cover everything necessary? Basically, yes. And that's saying a lot when you take into account most politicians these days. I think she's on the right track, but only the next couple months of campaigning (and- if elected- her performance as VP) will tell.
I also suspect that she is indeed a RINO in some ways- but not NEARLY in as many ways as the majority of Republicans currently serving in the various levels of American government. Nor do I think, when all things are considered, that she is NEARLY as socialist as the vast majority of politicians on both sides of the aisle.
If her speech did the job, then it did the job. There's no need for me to go all bug-eyed and be extra-decorative with my indication of her success. She's not perfect, but she's a hell of a lot closer than most when it comes to politics- and that's why I support her.

Grandslam!
September 4, 2008 - 11:41 ET by MeanderingThere were a few thing I wanted her to get into, but I suppose that will be left for McCain tonight. Though she is young in the political thing, she did what she needed to do, which is hush the naysayers and tell the media she doesn't care what they think of her. She railled the crowd, and has the base of the party behind her and that's what she needed to do. She showed confidence and strength. Like McCain said, we picked the right person.

Elaborate on the factual
September 4, 2008 - 13:14 ET by Dan The Man 2Elaborate on the factual errors. You post is cryptic to say the least.
Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.
Response
September 4, 2008 - 14:02 ET by Remixer96Among other factual errors:
1) McCain being "the same man" wherever he goes
McCain has shifted positions on a number of positions since his 2000 run for president, namely his stances on Roe v. Wade and immigration policy. Unless you're talking about the literal biological entity (which often doesn't merit "the same man" language), McCain is not the "same man" he was 8 years ago, thus the statement isn't true.
2) Obama hasn't authored a single major law or reform
Obama has worked on and helped pass a number of reforms, notable of which involve ethics reform and nonproliferation. To name one, he worked with Senator Feingold to assemble and pass S203 in the 110th Congress (The "Gold Standard" ethics reform bill), which the Washington Post gave them both credit for. For another, in the state senate he worked to pass HB 672 in 1998 which limited gifts government officials could receive from third parties with a conflict of interest.
Again, I think Palin's presence and delivery were good, but beyond spin, these statements and some others are lies, so I can only appreciate the speech so much.

September 4, 2008 - 14:28 ET by HermanoRemix - according to the Library of Congress, S230 (not s.203 as you typed) has only been read into the record. It has not been voted on. I may not have the latest information, but the only action I have seen on it takes place on January 9, 2007. If you can find additional information then I would be interested. After all, we are talking about the potential leader of the free world. It would be nice if he has done something tangible.

The "bill" The Hopeful
September 4, 2008 - 16:14 ET by Roger the ShrubberThe "bill" The Hopeful Changer "helped lead the Senate to pass" was actually read twice and referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, where it died an anonymous and quiet death.
The bill Obama and his discipiles are touting as "spearheaded" was actually co-sponsoered by SEVENTEEN senators, none of whom have the last name Obama.
As Hermano pointed out above, "tangible" work of the Messiah debunked. Next?
McCain being "the same man"
September 4, 2008 - 14:33 ET by Dan The Man 2McCain being "the same man" wherever he goes and he is. I assumed and believe she was talking about the character of the man and the decisions which result from the character. Remember she talked about his POW days and the character McCain displayed. So the same man argument is shot down. McCain has likely shifted on a number of issues in his 72 years as all of us have. But the key is why we have shifted.
And the second one Obama hasn't authored a single major law or reform where the key is authored. And you say worked with Senator Feingold and another was in state where he worked to pass HB 672. The key is he has no experience and has no initiative other rthan to say PRESENT.
And remixer you ghhve one a consolation prize for losing; teh home version of can I present any facts.

She didn't say he was the same man he was 8 years ago, nor did she say he has never changed his views on some things over those 8 years. As was quite clear to anyone who heard the speech, she was referring to shifting positions during one election cycle(hell, one week), such as telling people one thing in Scranton, and another thing in San Francisco.

September 4, 2008 - 13:37 ET by ConservativeRexI gave it a grand slam because it deserved it. It remains one of the single most historical speeches in these United States history. There were points in it where my wife was unashameadly weeping for joy. Rating Sarah Palin's Speech
September 4, 2008 - 14:02 ET by AvitarCompared to the all time great speeches of history this speech was only a grade 'B' speech, but being graded against FDR's "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" or Churchhills "the end of the beginning" speech is pretty heady. There is also something that should keep the liberal media up at night. This was a speech scripted so she did not outshine John McCain. She can do better.

Chelsea called the Secret Service, "personal, trained pigs."
September 4, 2008 - 14:13 ET by Ted ClarkeI rated this a grandslam because so much was riding on it. If she screwed up or set the wrong tone, then everything afterwards would exist in the shadow of that first impression (like in Hollywood where the opening weekend can make or break a film). She turned the tables so effectively on Obama that his Corrupted Pit Crew Media Goon Squad is panicked. He's now flagged in for repairs with his nuts cradled and reeling. The word "discombobulated" doesn't even begin to cover it.
There are iconic moments in that speech that will not soon be forgotten. Sarah's daughter smoothing down her baby brother's hair with spit. That line about hockey moms being pit bulls with lipstick. And the master stroke of repackaging the term "community organizer" as a national joke (Rush Limbaugh gets the credit for that observation). Contrast that to Obama's and Biden's speeches. They were like twin magic tricks disappearing in a cloud of confetti. The only thing I can remember of them is what Sarah referenced in HER speech.
Speaking of the daughter, she was priceless. All the money, prep and staging in the world couldn't match what she did. She was like a foundry furnace in which all the sharpened media knives melted.
Oh, yeah. And this: Remember that book, "Unlimited Access"? It was written by an FBI agent named Gary Aldrich who was assigned to the Clinton White House. He gave an account of how his partner had attempted to open a door for Hillary, who was carrying a heavy box, when a Residence staffer warned him not to. Apparently it was verboten for men to help her in any way. She gave strict orders for the Secret Service to "stay the f*** away". Like the stellar mother that she is, she passed her undisguised hatred for the men who would take a bullet for her to Chelsea, who called her protectors "personal, trained pigs".
Compare this to Sarah's daughter and her entire family. Differences like this are devistating. The crackup is going to be nasty over there on the Left so we're going to need some protective gear.

What Could She Have Done Better?
September 4, 2008 - 15:09 ET by SmartypantsTo the best of my knowledge, I know nothing that Palin could have done better than what she did last night. She delivered an outstanding speech with virtual perfection, and she did so under the heat of tremendous pressure. Sure, she had a friendly audience, but what the media had done to her over the previous week put her in a precarious position. She had to be perfect, or they would have skewered her more. Well, she was perfect. (Sure, they're still trying to ding her here and there, but given her performance, those who crticize that speech are the ones who look like fools.)
