Obama's Chicago-based campaign has been professional throughout, and Obama himself has suppressed exposing himself with radical statements. Just as they did in the primaries, the Obama campaign thinks they have it won and are just trying not to do anything stupid. Obama is counting on the media to do the rest of the heavy lifting.
McCain is a mess. That he's close is only attributable to the fact that Obama is still a hard sell to a lot of Americans.

October 13, 2008 - 10:37 ET by Chris NormanThe media always tilts the playing field. Of course, this year it's tilted it into an almost vertical position. Still, obviously, other Republicans have overcome the bias and got elected. McCain has run a lackluster campaign that's been uneven and sporadic. He had to run an exceptional campaign to overcome the media bias and historical circumstances but his campaign has been one of missed opportunities (with the exception of selecting Sarah Palin as veep). McCain just isn't the candidate to take on a media created and supported phenomena like Obama - although, I don't know that any of the GOP candidates who ran in the primaries could have overcome the stacked deck.

October 13, 2008 - 12:47 ET by Chris NormanJoe, In hindsight, perhaps. I still maintain that McCain won because the conservatives split the primary vote and McCain snuck through, up the middle. Still, look back: Huckabee? He was a little bizarre. Romney? He was considered a moderate until McCain became the frontrunner. He then came to be regarded as a conservative in the breach. Giulliani? With his baggage? Thompson? I thought he had a chance, but he was little too laid back. I just think it was a bad year for GOP candidates and except for (perhaps) Bobbie Jindahl, I see no up and comers at this point. We always want our candidates to be sharper and on point, but all our candidates seem to pull their punches. It's like there's a filter in the GOP that takes away all edges and force in the general election. While the base begs for the gloves to come off, our nominees, instead, seem to put a larger pair on top of the ones they already have on. When, will this ever stop being the case?

October 13, 2008 - 14:18 ET by Secret ConservativeI think McCain was taken completely by surprise that the same media who made him their darling in 2000, the same media who have courted him for 8 years every time he did some RINO nonsense in the Senate are CHEATING on him, deserting him for Obama. He may have realized that there would be some defections for Hillary, but not Obama. I don't think he knows quite what to make of it, and whoever is running his campaign is not up to the task of running a campaign against the media. So instead of McCain being able to take the high road and run a clean, high-minded campaign, he has to get down in the dirt while the media carries NOBAMA on their shoulders above the fray.

Yet, from the headlines and tone of coverage, you'd think Obama is being borne to Washington upon the shoulders of 300 million cheering Americans. The media has almost created a virtual reality of the electoral atmosphere. I'm sure, if Obama wins by a percentage point or two, it will be spun by the media as "landslide" and a "mandate". I'm not certain what has me more depressed - the distinct possibility of an Obama presidency or the fact that the media will have succeeded in their efforts, using the full force of bias, to bring it about.
McNotObama '08
Virtual reality
October 13, 2008 - 22:54 ET by bmovies"The media has almost created a virtual reality of the electoral atmosphere."
Bingo. It reminds me of what Rush Limbaugh said way back when Bush Senior was still in office. At the time you will recall, throughout the Reagan-Bush years, in the weeks leading up to Christmas every year, the liberal media filled the airwaves with almost nothing but stories on the homeless (that came to an end only after Bill Clinton won in Nov. 92). The homeless problem, hour long specials on the homeless, documentaries on the homeless, news reports, the works.
And then, after all this wall to wall coverage on the homeless problem, the media would then poll people on what they thought the biggest problem facing our nation was. And the answer would come back, "the homeless problem". And Rush pointed out that would be the obvious result, for if you gave nothing but weeks of wall to wall coverage about a national problem with the cement industry, for example, and then polled people what they thought biggest crisis facing the nation today, the response you would get would be "the cement industry."
It's the same thing with the wall to wall negative coverage of the McCain campaign. All they have been reporting is how Republicans are jumping ship. How the McCain campaign is sinking. As a result, people are coming to believe it. ANY negative news about the McCain campaign, real or not, is automatically given nationwide coverage and repeated day after day after day (in order to find the positive news of the McCain campaign, like for example who is endorsing him, I have to go to the conservative websites). The media take a magnifying glass and put it over whatever negative news they find about the McCain campaign in order to create this illusion. It doesnt take much for a liberal to believe in negative coverage of anything Republican. For conservatives, it takes a little more than just one or two negative stories. I wish I could say that my fellow conservatives were immune from this, but they are not. Some conservatives are buying into this media created "virtual reality".
What isn't virtual reality
October 13, 2008 - 23:13 ET by nwahsWhat isn't virtual reality is McCain chastising his base more than he chastises the despicable race baiting from the Obama camp. You're right about what the margin should be, if it's really all over. I just hope those around here who're verbally throwing in the towel (you know who you are) are still going to actually vote.
Because this isn't over by a long shot. Remember, it's that 20% or so of "unaffiliated" or "undecided" (or, as I like to call them "invertebrate") voters who really decide these things. The MSM echo-chamber doesn't speak to them or for them, IMO.
I actually predict a McCain win, by a fair margin. If, by chance, Obama wins, it will be a squeaker. With a lot of help from ACORN to boot.
Oh, btw, got a call from the Obama campaign last night. Did I know who I was voting for? Yep. Would I care to tell them? Nope. Was I aware that I could vote absentee for almost any lame reason? Yep. Good-night. They probably counted me as "leaning Obama."

October 13, 2008 - 10:37 ET by SmartypantsMcCain is running a weak campaign but, make no mistake, if the media treated the McCain/Palin ticket in the same manner it treats Obama/Biden, McCain would probably be up in the polls. The media has successfully helped to craft the picture that the economy is a Republican issue. The media has, for the most part, avoided true analysis that shows the real accountability for the mess. Also, the press has savaged Sarah Palin, as no other V.P. candidate has ever been savaged. Add to this the deliberate fawning over Obama and the minimal level of critical analysis of his background and experience and you have a media made election. Let's face it, the media got Obama the nomination of his party and was a huge factor in McCain being nominated by the Republicans. The msm continues to hold immense power over public opinion, even with the so-called alternative media.

In Reagan's day, the press reported every cockamamy thought and opinion about the man, but they didn't actually come up with them. October 13, 2008 - 10:45 ET by chad komorowskiMcCain is doing everything within his power not to lose but not to win this election. choices 2 and 3(obama running a good campaign and the media slant) are directly tied together.mr.obama IS NOT running a good campaign.in a time of fair treatment by the press his canidacy would be laughable and never made it off the ground.McCain would be trying not to win against hillary now(again her canidacy was laughable and in a sane world would never been entertained) which leads us to option 3.the fix is in.the press say: let it be written,so let it be done.(and for democrats who would assume i'm a racist mysogonist because i called to uniquley unqualified(1 being black the other a "woman")individuals canidacies laughable...i would have voted for condi rice for president in a heartbeat.....she's qualified)
All of the above
October 13, 2008 - 10:46 ET by Adam_ME1) Media bias - They want Obama as President and anyone who stands in the way(including even the media favs, the Clintons) will be taken out. The long-term damage they're doing to their reputations doesn't matter to them. They're invested in this as much as the Democrat Party.
2) McCain's campaign - In his defense, it's a bad year to be a Republican and the housing/stock market crisis was a tidal wave maybe no GOP candidate could've overcome. But that being said, he's had ample opportunity to destroy Obama on so many fronts that it's driving his base insane. If he would go after Barry half as hard as he went after Romney in the primaries, he'd be at least within the margin of error in the polls.
3) Obama campaign - He's been very effective in his get-out-the-vote efforts, but I'm hesistant to give him too much credit here simply because we don't know how much of it isn't plagued by dirty politics. ACORN is illegally registering voters by the thousands in every swing state. And he's getting millions in campaign contributions from questionable characters. And let's face it. With the media covering for him 24/7, any other candidate should be leading by 20 points in a year like this.

Coz I think that's how many there are that feel the same way. That's why I like Palin, and I think why so many do. And why the left is so concerned about tearing her down.
She (and others like her) are the future of the GOP. She's how we're going to regain control of the party, how we're going to put it back on the real conservative track. No one cares for about a hippie terrorist when they are losing money.
I think it is too late for John McCain, unfortunately and the only thing that will get him into the White House NOW is (God forbid) a major terrorist attack anywhere around the world.
Obama plagiarizes the Monkeys in PA
October 13, 2008 - 11:12 ET by JaykeCheck out this video and compare to the Monkeys lyrics below:

Peter Percival Patterson had a pet pig named Porky. This Pet Pig named Porky loved pie.
He loved pizza pie, pumpkin pie, pineapple pie, pizza pie, mince tarts...
And Peter Percival Patterson's pet pig Porky loved pie for breakfast,
pie for lunch, pie in the afternoon, and pie before he went to bed...
Peter Percival Patterson's pet pig Porky ate so much pie that do you know what he did?
He popped.
Could McCain do better?
October 13, 2008 - 11:20 ET by retroconCould McCain do better? Yes! Is Obama running the best socialist propoganda campaign since Stalin and Mao? Yes! But it's the media arm of the Obama campaign (otherwise known as the MSM), that is doing all of Obama's dirty work. Palin is evil, McCain racist, campaign is insighting race riots like Wallace.
If Obama wins, it is 100% the fault of the MSM. No campaign can get the word out if the media refuse to run their ads, yet become massive "free" advertisers for their opponents. No campaign can sway public opinion when they are constantly censored, belittled, and called liars by the majority of "news" outlets. MSM are demonizing McCain/Palin, they should be held accountable, but they won't be... just gotta put them out of business by not watching/listenting/reading, i guess.
Hey, look at ABC and the 527 doing the anti-abortion ad against Obama's infanticide position... Powerful, but ABC won't run it.

October 13, 2008 - 12:05 ET by ckc1227#3 primarily, followed by #1, although, even if McCain had run a stellar campaign, would anyone know about it?
Yes, the media has always been against Republicans, but never more so than this election. They lost in 2000, stepped up efforts to win in 2004, but still lost. They'll be damned if they're going to lose in 2008, and have adjusted their strategy appropriately. If they were doing their job, Obama wouldn't even be the candidate. Of course, if so many Americans weren't complete idiots, this race wouldn't be close.
Obama's Economic plan: more taxes, more spending, more regulation. Prosperity here we come.
An Obama win..
October 13, 2008 - 12:08 ET by Sergeant ROCK.. will be the result of the concerted efforts of stupid people, the MSM and ACORN.
PALIN/McCain 2008
Awake at Last?
October 13, 2008 - 12:28 ET by CellaJohn McCain gave one of the best speeches of his campaign this morning.
Maybe he has awakened from his snooze.
Obama, the cocky rooster, crowing outside his window must have done it.
I hope he did, I hate that I
October 13, 2008 - 12:50 ET by SeashellI hope he did, I hate that I missed it. I can't understand why he had to go soft on Obama the last few days. McCain had a trend in his favor in the polls, but I just saw the gallup and he is losing ground again. I understand (sort of) him correcting the woman on the Arab comment but saying that Obama would be a good President? Go figure................. It's not HIS job to defend Obama. The MSM does that just fine.
McCain strategy?
October 13, 2008 - 18:09 ET by TheAssessorA very wise WWII vet told me a story once: "We were in trap along the Rhine and I got cut off. I looked up and a bunch of Germans were standing in the trees a short ways away with me in their sights. There was nothing I could do so I started to laugh like hell and put down my gun looking like an easy shot. I kept laughing and started walking right at them. Some of them got to laughing too. I guess they figured I was nuts. When I got close enough I pulled the pin and hit the dirt. 11 Nazi's didn't go home that day".
McCain seems to be making himself pretty vulnerable. I'm just wondering...

I've seen a lot of talk
October 13, 2008 - 12:43 ET by ckbennetttnI've seen a lot of talk about the MSM completely forsaking their journalistic integrity and while that is true I do not think they are concerned about that, because after the election, if Obama wins, they will operate like the Tass news agency did in the Soviet days, as a propaganda machine. You will see the "fairness doctrine" get pushed through and there will be a real clampdown on "free press." That is my real concern. McCain has been cowed down because we can't disagree with or be critical of "the Chosen One." Limbaugh mentioned this a while ago, that McCain has let Obama define how he can run his campaign.

Obama is behind in the polls Newsbusters GET IT RIGHT
October 13, 2008 - 12:45 ET by Lame CherryIt is disappointing to see Newsbusters consistantly parroting the liberal press with these polls which are bogus.
I will point out that Sarkozy of France was being trounced in that election too by Royale and guess who is President of France????
What is occurring in this current cycle is vote suppression of the right who are buying into these rigged polls and the reality of Obama attempting to herd idiots who can not make up their minds.
Why don't you point out Newsbusters 5 point differences in these
"polls" which proves one can by a question or the inflection in the voice of someone talking to an Oprah viewer can influence people?
Why doesn't Newsbusters point out that Obama was in a landslide in New Hampshire...........ooppppss Hillary won in a landslide proving the pollers rigged the Democratic polls against her.
This same nonsense plagued Dame Hillary all through the election. Obama only won the mob states of a few thugs going around intimidating the many Clinton supporters.
Do I need to remind Newsbusters that Bill Clinton was incensed how the vote was stolen in Nevada.
So "other" just does not quote it right Newsbusters in even your poll is part of the problem in rigging the election. You are more and more just repeating Obama talking points instead of pointing out the facts.
In a conversation with a farmer today, even he was getting the point in polls don't mean a thing and you can't believe them. Ok so a guy with only a high school education has it figured out and Newsbusters with all your degrees is putting up a poll of influence for Obama.
I mark McCain after 6 weeks of hell to be up 5 points among those people who will vote.
If you don't get the POINT NEWSBUSTERS, Obama has fled Pennsylvania and it was the Clinton's and Bidens there as the Pennsylvanian Democrats are not going to vote for Obama. That is a BBC report of 2 weeks ago.
It is beyond disappointing to see your trends the past 2 weeks. None of you are that uninformed.
God bless

October 13, 2008 - 13:41 ET by nkviking75I voted "other" to mean both options 1 and 3. I am not as impressed with Obama's campaign because of the relentless gaffes. If the MSM reported impartially, there'd be a flood of articles questioning his fitness for the job. His arrogance and his relentless playing of race cards also turn sane people off.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
Wrong! McCain lacks passion.
October 13, 2008 - 14:01 ET by CrashFact: the media has been playing the plus campaign for the chosen one, which should have handed him a landslide in the polls. Therefor, this has always been McCain's to lose.
McCain has run a dull campaign without a drop of passion. When he put Palin on his ticket his numbers and his campaign contributions went to the moon. The reason why he's tanked lately is again of his making. He needs to stop his wishy-washy, "can't we all just get along, bipartisan crap, and get back to good old fashion ass kicking we're right they're always wrong campaigning.
Sample: "They were wrong about Freddie/Fannie, they were wrong about the surge, and Bush was wrong about Putin. I am a true Maverick, not because I compromise. But because I love my country and I have served it all of my life at your pleasure and my privilage!"
Time to bite the raw oyster
October 13, 2008 - 13:57 ET by kilrodWell folks, it's time to bite the raw oyster and chew on it till you pull that lever on election day. I know, the more you chew the bigger it gets, but we can handle it even with half our teeth tied behind our backs. Why, because this not about voting for McCain/Palin, it's about casting a vote for your country. If you "take your vote and stay home" so to speak, thats a vote for obama, if you vote for a third party canidate who has less chance than a "snowball in hell", thats a vote for obama. I regret that i have but one vote to cast for my country, for i believe my country is in great danger from obama and his marxist/communist agenda and the "progressive democraps" and the "socialist in the tank for obama msm". If we can stop the obama/marxist/communist in this election it buys us time, to either form a viable third party, rebuild a conservative republican party, counter attack the socialist democraps, and punish and hold the msm accountable. And to have a justice department from a republican whitehouse to prosecute the wrong doers in this mortgage, stockmarket meltdown, banking scandle, and to deal with the voter fraud and acorn, plus we will have a say in the next supreme court appoinments. If obama wins, this economy meltdown is going to be the least of your problems, you aint seen nothin yet. The American haters, liberals, communist, perverts, anti-christians, anti-moralist, anti-gun, anti-war, American apologist, and some i caint think of right now, will be empowered and they will be taking names and trying to kick ass and it's the conservative Christian republican ass they will be taking aim at and that may be YOU. About the only voice we have right now is these blogs and webb-sites like NB and e-mail. I beseech you to use these weapons all you can and get as much info about obama out to as many people as you can and i beseech you to cast your vote for your country, The Free and Just and Moral, United States of America. May God Bless You and May God Have Mercy on Us All.
kilrod
Stop and think about it, did you ever think it would come to a point to where you had NO voice in the campaign process, and that the msm would take everything the canidates said and represented, of the party you believe in, and twist it and turn it against you. While at the same time refuse to report the truth about the opposing party and only represent and report the views of the people and party that they, the media, agrees with. Well it's done happened to ya, right here in the good ole U.S.A.
Remember, only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier
Dull...then Palin...then Dull again
October 13, 2008 - 17:56 ET by PewahThe MSM is consistent and predictable. McCain should/could have made allowances and ran a much more aggressive campaign against a woefully thin opponent like Obama. I wanted to toss my lunch when I heard him telling a crowd recently that Obama would make a good president. McCain has always had a problem with fighting now and smoothing things out later with his opponents in the Senate. Even with the MSM's lack of willingness to print negatives about Obama, you can compensate by yelling loud often enough until you get press coverage. McCain is going to "nice" his campaign right into a dull concession speech in November. How the hell do we end up with non-starters like this at such a critical time? Right about now I'd like to bitch slap all those on the right who didn't support Romney (or even Huckabee) in the primaries. Thanks people. Now we have at least for years of total Democratic control.
Here's another poll for you
October 13, 2008 - 22:14 ET by nwahsIf you could snap your finger and have another candidate representing the Republicans, whether it be Romney, Huckabee, or Giuliani, would you? I know I would. How come only 20% are blaming it on a lackluster campaign?
Comatose is more apt than lackluster.
At least the RNC is getting aggressive. Lets hurry and elect this idiot so we can impeach him.
Lets hurry and elect this
October 14, 2008 - 11:54 ET by Conservative VoiceLets hurry and elect this idiot so we can impeach him.
Love it! And you are so correct. If McCain loses, he only has to blame himself for trying so hard to reach across the aisle that he didn't notice his other hand was flipping off conservatives.
What if....
