right, its NBC and he has a chance of a snowball
in hell at that network.

June 17, 2008 - 16:33 ET by compmanWhy wasn't the greatest interviewer of our time included on this poll? Of course I speak of Keith Olbermann and of course I kid.

It will be Olberman
June 17, 2008 - 16:38 ET by exLibCount on it. The upper-ups are determined to mainstream the guy.
They put him at all the debates, he got his show on NBC primetime and he does the half-time commentary on every Sunday Night Football game.
The left is dying to put a lefty like him in the spotlight and pawn him off as a centrist.
I'd take bets.
Chris Wallace???? His has tainted himself forever by working for Fox. Same goes for Brit Hume.
Chris Matthews would be next in line as he already has a panel discusson show on NBC or is it CNBC.

June 17, 2008 - 16:47 ET by Free ThinkerOlbermann would kill the show because I don't think he could draw the quality guests. He has found his niche in the small viewing world of the extreme fringe-left and has a reputation now that is too tainted to garner ratings for a flagship show like Meet the Press. Why not consider Bill O'Reilly, at least he would bring an audience.

June 17, 2008 - 18:05 ET by GregEOlbermann couldn't do it, literally, if they want someone who can set there own political views aside and go for the information whatever it is.
He literally couldn't do it because strong Leftists can't control themselves. The first perceived conservative viewpoint that showed up would set Olbermann's brain near boiling and he'd lose control of himself.
His moment
June 17, 2008 - 18:35 ET by Eileen RightYeah, I'd pay to see Olbie's "Regis" moment (Joey Bishop Show), sobbed like a school girl.
What? No Olberloon??
June 17, 2008 - 16:34 ET by bloolooI've heard Keith's name bandied about as the next heir apparent. He doesn't even make the list? Personally, I think Brokaw is too old, Hume is too bland, and most of the others don't have the hutzpah. I can see Brian Williams doing it though.

In my opinion Hume would be the best though.

Crap Shoot!
June 17, 2008 - 16:46 ET by MeanderingIts a toss up. NBC could pick anyone of those leftist loons. However, I think the best man for the job is Brit Hume, no question about it. Will they pick him, probably not because NBC is a radical communist organization.
A question for those who
June 17, 2008 - 16:46 ET by DEVILDOCMOMmentioned Brit Hume and Chris Wallace; would that be a step up for them? I guess I don't think so, I enjoy them so much on FOX. nbc is a dying network news wise imo.
I would love to see Chuck
June 17, 2008 - 16:57 ET by Cureboy675I would love to see Chuck Todd get the job. He is as close as it gets to appearing unbiased on MSNBC.
However, my betting money is on David Gregory. Though I don't think he's right for the job.

Shame on me
June 17, 2008 - 20:50 ET by Iowa BoyI hadn't even considered Eric Burns. He would be perfect. Like Russert, he's not part of that Washington cocktail party scene. He's smart, a good writer, asks good questions from no particular point of view that I can remember, also personally answered an email I sent him back in '01.
I originally thought Browkow but I'm changing my vote. Good one Sarc.

June 17, 2008 - 17:12 ET by Shooter1002C'mon, its gonna be that elitist little snot Gregory, if the network can afford the coif budget. He fits perfectly.
Matthews would be their ideological favorite but he's too much of a loose canon. He could fatmouth NBC out of a top-rated show with one more Obamagasm!

Sorry, but Russert just
June 17, 2008 - 17:29 ET by jdhawkSorry, but Russert just wasn't that even handed. He soft balled dimocrats and put it to conservatives. Regarding conservatives, he would generally following the line of questioning that the TV anchors and the newpaper opinion pieces were asking of conservatives at a given point in time. These were always disparaging towards conservatives.
The next Meet the Press "journalist" will be another hack that chews up conservatives and kiss the a**es of liberals.
I haven't watched and will not watch in the future.
Regarding Wallace and Hume - you're kidding right?
My vote is for Rush Limbaugh!
Olbermann
June 17, 2008 - 17:40 ET by Noel SheppardFolks,
The reason I didn't include Olbermann is because nobody seriously believes he's being considered. ns

June 17, 2008 - 22:20 ET by dahliatraversThank heavens for small favors.
Although He Who Drools would only be marginally better.
What's the fun in that?
June 17, 2008 - 22:27 ET by pbthinkerWell, Noel, it certainly didn't stop the speculation by some people. It would have been fun to see how many votes he would have gotten.

June 18, 2008 - 08:45 ET by Noel SheppardPBT,
I considered the entertainment value of putting Olbermann in, but decided since everything I've read indicates he's not on the list for obvious reasons, I'd try to make this realistic. If I put in Olbermann, many folks would have been inclined to vote for him just for the fun of it. However, what would we have learned beyond the fact that so many conservatives hate this man and have no respect for NBC? ns
I can't imagine Williams
June 17, 2008 - 17:52 ET by balboaI can't imagine Williams giving up the anchor desk to do MTP, and doing MTP AND the evening news might be too much.
Can't see Brokaw wanting a regular gig. Mitchell not big enough.
Hume, Wallace, Stephanopoulos are legit candidates. But I could see Gregory getting it.
»→ Chris Wallace
June 17, 2008 - 18:02 ET by Cool ArrowI think Chris Wallace's style most closely resembles the Russert format.
And I think they'd like to stick wih the same formula as much as possible.
But, inasmuh as NBC is the smarmiest institution riding waves, I'd hate to see Wallace over there.

Some Thoughts
June 17, 2008 - 18:13 ET by third eyeI heard theyre going to use Brokaw for awhile and I wouldnt be surprised if they just left him in. If they go from inside NBC, my vote is for Chuck Todd, but Ill admit Ive never seen him do an interview. I think Greta Van Sustern is a pretty good interviewer. Charlie Rose isnt bad.

Gwen Ifil will be the choice
June 17, 2008 - 18:49 ET by mustangsallyI believe the next host of MTP will be Gwen Ifil. I'm not saying she is my favorite or the best qualified for the slot but she is a reasonable choice and so NBC will capitalize on the symbolism of a black and a woman as Russert's replacement. This will appease all of the media lefties and dovetail nicely with their general "Barack Obama is the Savior of the generation" narrative for the 2008 Presidential campaign. Imagine the free publicity and rave reviews from the self-congratulatory media echo chamber when they give the nod to Ifil....
I agree
June 17, 2008 - 22:21 ET by Red Stater Commie haterI agree it will be Ifil because of the symbolism.... hey NBC can't list anymore left than they are and keep the show a float but some of the names mentioned (outside of the FOX nominees) will do more damage short of naming Rosie O'Donnell as host. I think other than Ifil it could be Matthews because when you think of it wasn't the original purpose of MSNBC kind of like the minor leagues tuning up the talent for the "Bigtime" while also filling the discussion void left between Sunday after MTP and the following Sunday? Whatever they do it will probably fail just like Katie on CBS since they seem to not measure the marketplace just the corner of Rhetoric Avenue and Liberal Bias Boulevard!
Fox, give Wallace a new contract and a raise
June 17, 2008 - 19:13 ET by nkviking75If FNC is smart, they'll negotiate a new contract with Wallace with a nice raise, and seize the opportunity to knock off MTP while it's in transition. I don't see NBC going after Hume, since he's older and since he takes conservative positions in the commentary sections of Fox News Sunday. I don't see Brokaw because of his age, or Williams adding MTP to his workload.
David Gregory was my vote. I pray they're not insane enough to pick Olbermann. If they do, TV's oldest program will instantly be on its deathbed.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
Who cares?
June 17, 2008 - 19:19 ET by jefflebowskiWith the exception of Brit Hume (who is a classy guy), the entire list are tools. I won't watch it anyway.

How can Gregory possibly host MTP? He disqualified himself during his recent appearance at a DC synagogue.
This is a sorry list - What about Ted Kopell
June 17, 2008 - 22:34 ET by Dee BunkI don't think they'll pick anyone from Fox and the rest of the choices are all too biased.
What about Ted Kopell? He's biased left too but he'd be more professional than the rest of the non FOX choices. He'd be more comparable to Russert.
Ted Kopell is past it and he knows it.

Who it won't be...
June 17, 2008 - 22:54 ET by CTIt won’t be anyone from Fox, there's no match there that could withstand the rebranding.
It won’t be a woman, the only one strong enough to hold the anchor seat has one and I don't see Gwen Ifill leaving PBS.
It won’t be Stephanopoulos, he's lucky to still have his job at ABC and he knows it.
It won’t be Tom Brokaw unless he is a place holder, but I don't think he could last as long as Bob Schieffer has even for a one show a week program.
It won’t be a primary news anchor talking head like Brian Williams or his wannabe protégé (I'm smiling because I have a turd in my mouth) David Gregory. There's too much invested in pretty talking heads to waste on research and real journalism.
That leaves Chuck Todd if he's got the chops for it.

How about going back to the
June 17, 2008 - 23:38 ET by maggieqpublicHow about going back to the old-style Meet The Press panel interrogation. Put Tom Brokaw on a panel of three (with two weekly guest panelists). If he knows how to do a serious interview, Chuck Todd would be an ideal fit long-term because he has the Russert likeability factor going for him. Plus, watching the guest panelists trying to out-perform the other questioners…. ratings bonanza.
Meet The Press is Finished
June 18, 2008 - 00:16 ET by pearlThere is no place for a down the line show anymore.
NBC is too invested in Obama's ascendancy to allow a straight shooter to run MTP now.

Tom Brokaw
June 18, 2008 - 06:02 ET by roadgeek9I would prefer that Brit Hume would be the next host of "Meet the Press." But, Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews would tell the chairman of NBC News that FOX News is a corrupt organization, so Brit would immediately be considered corrupt.
I think that it would be Brokaw, he seems to have enough experience.
How about
June 18, 2008 - 06:39 ET by juspassinthruNBC go with two in the booth? Let's say David Gregory and Ann Curry?
Or Dan Rather and Karl Rove?
I know the format of the show has been around for decades but the Internet has cut into their ratings, big time, for the last few years, so a restructuring would seem to be in order and this is the perfect time to do it.
