A bit much
June 28, 2009 - 12:01 ET by BettendorYeah, it was a bit much, and I say this as a fan and child of the '80s who grew up listening to his music.
An earlier post on here mentioned how the network newscasts focused so much on Jackson on Friday that they practically ignored the House vote onthe cap and trade bill. That probably bugs me more than anything, and it wasn't just the American broadcasters, either. I checked out the BBC World newscast they run at 11 p.m. every night on the public TV stations here in Iowa and that's all they focused on, too. This is probably why I don't watch a lot of TV news anymore.
With the cap and trade bill, you could argue that anyone in power could sneak something through without people knowing about it because they're all distracted by something shinier like the MJ story.
Sad stuff.

Coverage
June 28, 2009 - 12:38 ET by GothampcPoor Farrah Fawcett. She didn't get any coverage at all. What teenage boy in the 1970s didn't have the Farrah red bathing suit poster hanging on his wall?
I think the coverage is over the top. But we live in an American Idol culture. I'm mad at Fox News for giving over their time to it. While Congress is voting on cap/trade tax hike, and Iran and North Korea are going crazy, we have to watch Sheperd Smith relate his stories about dancing to Michael Jackson. I have come to expect that garbage from the other networks, but I was hoping Fox News was above it.

June 28, 2009 - 12:57 ET by iveseenitallThe media is the message---and it's been sending quite a message to our young people for decades. When you examine the coverage of Jackson, you understand who our "jounalists" really are. Sad.

It's called appeasement
June 28, 2009 - 12:55 ET by lgeubankRemember Rosa Parks's funeral? The TV stations feel they have to go all-out, or face mud-slinging from blacks -- maybe even rioting.
You can just imagine the accusations black "leaders" would fling if the whole country didn't go into panegyrics and conniption fits: "You only care when a white person dies, you don't give blacks the attention they deserve," etc., etc. So media outlets reason, it's better to appease them, suck up, try to get in good.
Like when Stalin died: you HAD to show your sorrow; otherwise, you were branded "anti-Soviet." When you're ruled by an unreasoning orthodoxy, you have to knuckle under to your insane rulers.

I don't see it unreasonable that the media should cover this the way that it is. After all it is the untimely death of the most famous person of all time who is also the highest selling music artist of all time (yes some one actually more famous then Obama).
Also i doubt the msm would have covered the cap n trade bill much even if the pop king hadn't died. oddly enough the news seems a little more back to normal then what has been the status quo lately.

I just want to see some weather, the morning traffic, maybe something about the local economy and the state of this pathetic state's economy, and instead it's Michael Jackson.
