Where's The Wow?
September 27, 2008 - 09:42 ET by Bill W.Thought Obama had the best communication skills of anyone that has ever lived. "...such a great speaker". Well, I guess that isn't true because most of the talking heads think he did just "OK"...no knockout. If he didn't dismantle his opponent with all "that" going for him, isn't it kind of a loss?
snapshot polls last night
September 27, 2008 - 13:34 ET by wdhorningBoth CNN and Fox had "punch in" polling. Here were the numbers about midnight:
: CNN FoxNews TOTALS
McCain 30317 73800 104117
Obama 73250 15300 88550
These results show a few things:
1) for the total of all Democrats and Republicans and Independents,
more voted for McCain where the vote ratio was 44% for Obama, but 56%
percent for McCain.
2) CNN has a viewership that is mostly Democrats, that is a ratio of
3:1 over Republicans, yet Obama only got 7:3 ratio which, when a common
denominator is used, yields 7:3 ratio out of 9:3 proving that many
Democrats switched sides, at least when looking at debate performance.
(A tie ratio would have been 9:3, but Obama only got 7:3).
3) FoxNews viewship is mostly Republicans, and that ratio is about 7:5
over Democrats according to recent viewer's survey. In this case McCain
got a ratio of 3:1 and when the common denominator is changed for
comparison we see that with a viewership of 7:5 McCain got a vote of
confidence of 15:5 which exceeds a tie of 7:5 by 2 to 1
4) There was of course some independent voters in the mix, so the ratios are not perfect, but still close
5) Finally, the FoxNews poll also shows a much larger percentage of
Democrats watch FoxNews than the percentage of Republicans that watch
CNN. Could it be that FoxNews presents both sides more fairly that
CNN?
Ans: I watched the interviews after the debate and very strong
arguments were allowed to be made by spokespersons from both McCain and
Obama camps on FoxNews. I have watched CNN on occasion in the past,
just to compare, and sure enough, CNN lets a Republicn who is a "numb
nuts" speak on behalf of McCain/Palin, but picks the brightest Democrat
to speak for Obama/Biden.
7) I believe it was 6 times Obama had to say something like, "Sen
McCain is absolutely right", while McCain only agreed with Obama ever
so slightly on a few key points (like doing something about the
financial crisis). It seems McCain articulated much better, which was
not just debating skills alone, but he has more knowledge in the
background of all issues.
8) This simple survey shows that all the MSM commentators are clearly
in the Obama camp, because they all said Obama won the debates, but the
combined Democrat-Republican survey I just did proves them to be biased
at bias can get.
9) I watched a discussion afterwards, where Juan Williams could NOT
look anyone in the face when he said Obama won the debate and also
while explaining why, showing Mr Williams, in truth, did not believe
what he was saying. He finally did look the moderator in the face for
those things that were simple statements of fact, however, proving he
was embarassed when he lacked confidence in his support of Obama, but
OK when what he said was just a statement of fact. All the other
commentators looked the moderator in the face, because they all
provided more balanced comments that were fairly truthful, including
those comments favoring Obama. No one looked down or away when
providing favorable comments for McCain.

September 27, 2008 - 13:11 ET by jawebster1when Obama says he agrees with you. Obama is our most Liberal Senator, so either Obama is hiding his Liberal views or your views are way too Liberal. I don't think Obama would have ever said he agreed with Mitt Romney if Mitt were standing there instead of John McCain. For one thing, water boarding is not torture. September 27, 2008 - 09:50 ET by pocomocoIf smoothness and the lack of substance were the criterion of the President Of The United States, Obama would have won the debate. That not being the case, though, I gave him a D for looking good.

Agreed
September 27, 2008 - 10:34 ET by BlondeI added/subtracted a whole grade for the tie.
Obama went from a D to a C, and McCain from an A- to a B- for that hideous tie....what was up with that?
Obama looked great, suit was good, shirt & tie good, well....until we get to the bracelet. Maybe I should deduct that tie point. His "I have a bracelet too....uh, uh, uh...(looking at bracelet) given to me by the uh, uh, uh, mother of Sgt.....". That was just pathetic.
He reminded me of my little sister as a four year old "Me too, Me too, Me too!" agreeing with "John" all night.
Yep Gat, empty Armani suit. Anyone need a store window dummy?

Cartoonish
September 27, 2008 - 10:18 ET by ThisnThatThere are lots of cartoons that depict two characters: One is a solid, feet-on-the-ground type that is always in charge, knows what it's doing, and leads the way. The second is a scrappy, annoying little over-energetic type that is always circling the solid character looking for acceptance. The solid character tolerates the annoying one, but sometimes has to stop and scold him because of his antics.
Obama's "I agree with John" and "I have a bracelet too" performance reminds me of this cartoon -- I can't get it out of my mind. And McCain's occassional slap-downs were perfect.

Obama barely rated a 'D'
September 27, 2008 - 10:38 ET by CTI was surprised how little Obama knew and could speak beyond the canned Democrap talking points on foreign policy. The man's knowledge of foreign policy is shallow and American voters that cannot see that are testimony to our pathetic public education system.
I'd Like To Know...
September 27, 2008 - 10:41 ET by Beresford...if there is substantiation for some of the charges Obama made in the debate. Specifically where he said to Sen. McCain:
I don't remember McCain saying "quick and easy" -- not sure about the WMD issue -- and don't remember him saying "no history of violence between Shiite and Sunni." Those things were said by some people....but McCain? Not so sure.
C- or D
September 27, 2008 - 11:33 ET by Travis NoodleInitially Barry (or bambi) came off very well debating the questions about the current economic crisis.
McCain did very well in the beginning as well. His answers were much more understandable and to the point.
I don't know what or when but something got under Bambi's skin. His body language became nervous, he started making more facial expressions, smirking, his body swayed. He started interrupting McCain. Bambi was caught in the headlights.
That's when McCain found his mojo and ended up winning the debate. He looked more presidential, statesman-like and poised.

September 27, 2008 - 11:47 ET by pbthinkerI had to give him a "B", he did a little better on some things, than I thought he would, and he looked a little worse on foreign policy, than he should have.
From what I could understand, I don't agree with him on anything, but he looked pretty saying it, which is all that's expected of him from the MSM, so he accomplished his goal.

I thought of him as an immature child, desperately trying to get Lehrer to do anything, anything to make the mean bully stop picking on me...can't we just move on...(he has been used to the preferential treatment by the msm, Lehrer didn't do it, like I said last night, that really made me happy, I also liked the flow of things with the forum set-up)
One of my favorite lines was when McCain was talking about Obama's earmarks since he has been in the Senate...I think it was 928 million...anyway, McCain said...that equals out to a million a day for each day you have been in the Senate...

The Problem
September 27, 2008 - 15:00 ET by Gat New YorkBT - If McCain were just up against this lightweight fraud it would be easy.
But the fact is that McCain's other and biggest opponent is the Obama Propaganda Machine which is about 85% of the media. There is no more journalism and the MSM has dropped all pretense of objectivity to become a propaganda tool for Obama. That includes intentionally deceiving the public and outright lying. We saw a lot of that in 2004, but nothing like it is now.
bt... I gave Obama a 'C'
September 27, 2008 - 16:21 ET by Clear thinkerbt...
I gave Obama a 'C' because he did just ok. You know, he didn't sweat profusely, and not once did he reach for the barf bag.
The most telling part of the debate was not what they said, it was their body language. The split screen last night kept showing Obama making childish faces every time McCain hit a nerve, and when Obama wanted to interrupt. Try watching some of the debate with the sound off and you will see what I mean. During those moments, it was impossible for Obama to hide his elitist arrogance.

I thought neither of them
September 27, 2008 - 16:14 ET by ThatDudeI thought neither of them did very well. Both threw out their gaffes and tried to slime the other with labels. I gave Obama a B cause he performed beyond my expectations of him. Maybe my problem is that I graded based on expectations. Agreeing with McCain so often helped him look like he had a clue. However, he fumbled with the truth far too often when he resisted McCain on any point. Nearing the end of it both candidates were angry and frustrated. Obama's presidential look (elitist to me) became something of a childish nay-saying and grumbling that he couldn't drive on without mentioning bush.
While my personal opinion
September 27, 2008 - 16:34 ET by dmntd1While my personal opinion is worth the paper it's written on, I think Sen Obama did a decent job last night. I think Sen McCain did about the same. I think they both made points, but I think Sen Obama will come out on top of it due to his 'tax breaks for 95%' and the lack of challenge it received.
I was shocked, but not terribly so, when Sen McCain was interupted, and terribly shocked when Sen McCain wasn't interupted during a groove.
I LOVED the multitude of times Sen McCain was able to get in how often he had visited foreign countries, foreign leaders and our troops overseas. Those showed how much of a lightweight Sen Obama is on foreign policy.... right about the same level that Gov Palin is, I would say.....

Obama's handlers said that
September 28, 2008 - 10:18 ET by general companyObama's handlers said that he was prepaird with zingers and would be on the attack. Since McCain took him off of his game, I gave Obama a C. Obama agreed with McCain often as well, so it seemed his statagy was flawed from the start. Hopefully they won't learn much, but know doubt they will.
