I'm the first vote!

That's never happened to me before.

Dee, that's great and all...

...but would you mind telling us which way you voted?

:-)

Theme for Election '08: Who cares?

RD - oh yeah - I guess only the second person could tell

; )

I voted Northeast only because it's the newest (as vacationing goes) to me. I love all of the History around there and plan to have many more vacations in the area.

In the past I had always been partial to Colorado because I'm in awe of the mountains. I still am and still go there frequently.

I like active vacations. I don't like to relax and find laying around at the beach to be completely boring.

Southwest for me. And when I

Southwest for me. And when I say Southwest I mean waaaaaay Southwest. As in Hawaii, Tahiti, Fiji etc...

I voted

for the northeast only because I am a genealogist and most of my ancestors are from that area. Otherwise, I would not visit that area in particular. I live in Arizona and love this area of the country. We do visit Alaska frequently because we have a cabin there, but it was not listed.

Hey DDM... Just out of

Hey DDM...

Just out of curiosity where in Ak. is your cabin? I used to live in Ak.

The majesty of that state is indescribable to others, you have to go yourself to experience, you also have to live there year round to appreciate mother nature too...to see and experience all.

Trapper Lake

It is about half way between Anchorage and Denali, across the Big Su...fly out lake, my husband was a bush pilot in another life, so it works well for us.

DDM.. Bush pilot you

DDM..

Bush pilot you say...wow the stories he could tell...you are out there gal...I wouldn't go there until summer either, oh well, if it's cozy as a bear in a rug in the other seasons, which is all of them just about..you got to be happy...I imagine you see Mt. McKinley just fine on a clear day...heheeee

We lived in Seward for most of the years...we had relatives in Fairbanks and still do in Ester.

Btw...Thank God for Bush Pilots.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

We can, but

we have to take the boat around the point. My husband built the cabin in a little bay to protect the plane and to miss the winds which come straight down the lake. In the winter they can be pretty darn cold. :)

Yep, here is a great place

Yep, here is a great place to go this time of year DDM...this mixes with that lie called global warming and where to vacation....heheheeee...brrrrr...glad I am not there, if Anchorage got this, I know most likely Seward is socked in with tons of snow too...I haven't looked it up, but I can well imagine.

We here in my area have the forecast for more snow this week...it is maddening.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

I know

that global warming is terrible, isn't it? HA. My husband reads the ADN on a regular basis...usually he sends me those articles...

Not to butt into a private

Not to butt into a private conversation, but didn't y'all know that it's no longer called "global warming"?  Yeah, with all the late-season snow going on everywhere, the Goracle and his minions are now calling it "climate change" so as not to be exposed for the frauds they are.

Hmmm, "climate change"...and here I was under the impression that "climate change" is what happens naturally with the change of seasons...warm to hot, hot to warm, warm to cool, cool to cold, cold to cool, cool to warm...lather rinse repeat for millennia...

Carry on...

No, not a private conversation

I am happy to hear your thoughts. I try to ignore algore as much as possible and apparently missed his latest "thoughts"-if you can use that word in the same sentence with algore.

Yes, I believe your definition of climate change is accurate. Just shows what we know...:)

LOL ladyvt.... Yeah we

LOL ladyvt....

Yeah we have something called the four seasons, might be nice if someone would clue in algorites of that...and of course he himself.

Wait, he knows all of this, got to get more awards and of course the $$$$$$$ he is making off all of this and more to come to if any of the three candidates get in office....unless somehow people revolt and elect a conservative congress....which will take a major miracle.

AK is Northwest

Isn't it?

Well,

I guess, but it just did not seem to fit to me.

kch, AK wins the most eastern, northern, western locations.

rolled into one state.

Hawaii is the most southern.

Am I still lost?

A couple of months ago, when I opened a "Snapple" bottle, the cover contained the statement about AK being both the most western and most eastern state. I thought it might be because of the date line, but the globe I looked at showed what appeard to be all of AKs islands on the same side of the zig-zagged date line. The map you link to doesn't show the date line, but I assumed the island furthest from the mainland [Attu] would be on the other side. However, both Wikipedia and Encyclopedia describe it as Alaska's westernmost island. Even a website about birding on Attu makes reference to the fact that the date line jogs to include it on the same side as the rest of AK. But that web site [which is more about WWII than birding] has a map that shows Attu kind of south of Siberia, so I'm guessing the real answer is that it's in the eastern hemisphere and the date line is an arbitrary line, moved at will to put all of the US on the same side of it.

Chai

Chai

all the lines are arbitrary based on London being on the 0° prime meridian which by the technical interpretation put France and Germany in the East.

The date line is a common-sense means of dividing and thus would be less arbitrary imo.

look at your link, on the far left that dark line, the date line!

That curvey date line; there's a reason i used it as a reference and not the 180 meridian.

Southwest!!

I have had it snow here about everyday for a week, we have broken records...it is gorgeous and almost 60 here today, but supposed to turn cold again starting tomorrow...with yes...you guessed it...more SNOW! Waaaah....I want to go home...which is California!

U.P. of Michigan.

This was difficult

I went with the Southeast but I love Maine and also Arizona and New Mexico.  What clinched it for me is the friendliness of southerners....You don't find that in California or many northeastern states.

Mearline, yes, the southeast

As a resident of Myrtle Beach SC I can confirm that we are friendly here, and we have no shortage of rice.

Unfortunately, most of us here are formerly from New York so therefore, sometimes we may cut you off on the highways and give you the finger.

But, enjoy our hospitality when not driving.

You betcha

The shrimp are caught with grits down here.

But you said "You Betcha!"

But you said "You Betcha!" That is upper midwest!

I see where you're going with this

Sometimes I say Manitoba.

That's Canada.

I voted for the Southeast, and not just 'cause I is from there.

Plenty of mountains, golf, miles of beaches, lots of battlefields from the War of Northern Agression, and the best fried chicken you will ever find.

Oh, and did I mention all kinds of killer BBQ? :-)

My second choice is the Rockies.

I want to see a lot of things I haven't yet here in this country...all over the place.

Evenin' bt,

LOL-Well heck, just come on down! :-)

I love it here. Wouldn't live anywhere's else.

Friendliest... The all time

Friendliest...

The all time friendliest tourist trap has got to be Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge TN. If you have never vacationed there, you need to. The hospitality there is not faked by the people. They are genuinely friendly, helpful, and courteous. And there is lot's to do and you can go broke in 2 days easy.

LOL!  No kidding, what's this "vacation" of which they speak?  *sigh*

Why not abroad

I voted for the Rockies, but my favorite vacation locations are in the South Pacific (Any tropical South Pacific island), and Thailand.

Vacationing Stateside has become very passe.

My choice isn't here...

Anywhere, offshore....where there are big fish and hot oceans.

Not anywhere near the Continental U.S.

<edit>  That's just my preference....however, if anyone here cares to make a trek to the Sunshine State....let me know.  I live here, so it's not a place for me to visit....but if it strikes your fancy as a vacation destination....let me know...I'd be happy to act as a guide to put you on what might tickle your fancy (fishing, theme parks, beaches, etc., etc.)

I love to spend time at the beach-- it's the best way to relax!  But since I live within 30 minutes of the Gulf of Mexico, I don't really consider it a vacation destination.  I picked the Rockies, because aside from the beach, it is the MOST BEAUTIFUL place I've ever been.  I have an aunt and uncle who live in Colorado Springs, and when we visit they take us to all of the non-touristy places to hike, camp, etc.  I love it!

Hard Choice For Me

I live in some mighty fine territory here in SoCal - San Diego region, thankew - so I chose the NW just because it's a change of pace from ideal weather by the beach. Going back to the Great Lakes, maybe up around Alpena or Travese City would be a second choice.

Vacation? What's that?

Vacation??? I ain't had a vacation in 20 years! Can't afford it.

Up North

Man, I can't believe you didn't include Up North! Do you have something against Northern Minnesota, aka the Upper Midwest? We vacation Up North there ya know. I'm shocked, shocked that us Norwegians are being tossed under the vacation tour bus! ;)

Northern MN

There are definitely some gorgeous places to vacation in MN, however it kinda puts a damper on the fun when the sun starts to set and the "state bird" starts swarming in thick clouds... ;-)
