Putting America first as a stunt, only the 'progressives' could come up with that. McCain should counter with Obama's refusal to engage in debates long ago was a true stunt.

Yeah, Obama supposedly got

Yeah, Obama supposedly got all snarky about how "a President ought to be able to multitask."  As if "I'll deal with my own ambitions after I help put out this fire" is a failure to multitask."

Does Michelle go into her hospital and tell the doctors that they ought to be able to "multitask" and fill out their paperwork while they're also doing surgery?

The word "suspend"...

bothers me, He should have said I'll be right back after I go to DC to fix this mess. Either follow me or get out of the way.

He did say that, well

He did say that, well essentially.  He said he would not be campaigning until this "crisis" was fixed.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Problem with "suspend" as well

While John McCain is in Washington he can have many surrogates still campaigning for him. They can spreed the word on how he can fix and what he has done to help stop the fall. The word suspend is tied to the word concede the election to the other candidate, at least in the primaries. Hillary suspend her campaign and the conceded to Obama. Did John McCain just suspend his campaign and conceded to Obama?  Lets "hope" not

McCain/Palin  '08

Unsure

Because, politically, it probably hurts him. Hopefully not fatally.

But it was the right thing to do. The MSM will try to make him pay for it, though.

McCain - smart move on both counts

Both the McCain and Obama decisions will be spun, but McCain had to do this.

Previously Senate Majority Leader Reid ("no one knows what to do") said that McCain's leadership was needed, then told him not to come. ('oh yeah, says who?' that was a dare in itself) So, McCain decides to put Country First and go to Washington. Necessary move AND smart political move.

It will look better for America if both parties (even begrudgingly) support the final bill, and McCain can probably persuade some of the Republican naysayers. We know that Obama will vote how Pelosi/Reid tell him to, so Obama's presence wouldn't add anything to the process.

downside for Obama - Now that Pres. Bush has requested Obama's presence, this will eat into his necessary debate prep sessions.

The   "walk and chew gum"

The   "walk and chew gum" mantra is going around the media this morning like wild fire. So much so that I think we'll probably be treated to a "....walk and chew gum"  montage on Rush this afternoon. I even heard Edward R. Murrow use it on the liberal View this morning. It's vitally important for media liberals to mischaracterize what McCain is trying to do to fix the current financial crisis otherwise regular people might get the unacceptable impression that he really does walk the walk when it comes to the meaning of 'Country first.'

Yeah, remember how a

Yeah, remember how a president was supposed to walk and chew gum during Katrina? Me neither. Seems to me that he was supposed to drop everything, disrupt rescue operations and fly into LA for a photo op.

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" - Joe Biden 6/12/87

In the eyes of the average,

In the eyes of the average, non-political, voter, this looks very weak.  He comes off as though he isn't prepared to debate and now there is word that he is trying to delay the Palin/Biden debate as well.  Bad business if you ask me.  I understand why he did it, but will the average voter who has been waiting for the dabtes understand?  I guess we will see.

Yes they will

If they listen to Bill Clinton they will believe McCain:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/09/bill-clinton-do.html

Obama countered that a President

needs to be able to multitask. While true, I would challenge the Ill. Sen to show where he has done anything effectively ,save give charismatic generic speeches, all the way back to his "community activist" days much less multitask.

Stay off the record and you can never be held accountable for it, huh Sen Obama. Wait, he has some 900 lb gorillas in his history and is still not held accountable.

Only Reason for Debate

There is only one reason Obama wants this Foreign Policy debate to take place Friday night.

He know that he will not win that debate, but what will dominate all the newspapers Saturday and Sunday will be this bail out legislation and the debate coverage will be minimized.

He won’t have that opportunity afterwards.

The debate was supposed to

The debate was supposed to be about foreign policy, but do you really think that after this week it still will be? My guess is there will be more economic questions than foreign policy ones.

And the Clinton machine,

And the Clinton machine, while not directly helping McCain, continues to damn Obama with faint praise.

"O" Dumby

Why would "O" Dumby want to suspend his campainging?

He's to stupid and uninformed to take part in anything useful for the country.

He's only interested in getting to be president not at all worried about the country of the people.

In the eyes of the

In the eyes of the average, political, voter, this looks very weak too.  I think it would have been a smart move if he had executed it better, but he didn't.  First off he's doing this at the eleventh hour.  This process has been going on for close to a week now, and McCain is just now deciding it's important enough to suspend his campaign and go to DC???  Just a day after it was so unimportant that he could spend the day going on the Rachael Ray show???  Even worse, he tells Letterman he can't do his show because he has to rush back to DC, then he gets caught taking time to sit with Couric to give her an interview, i.e., wasting time to explain why it's so vital he not waste any time getting back to DC.

This is going to end up looking bad for McCain.

SUSPENSION REVEALS BOTH CANDIDATES

MORTGAGE MESS REVEALS OBAMA-McCAIN

Let’s see…one senator leaves to “DO” his job in the senate a couple of days because a national crisis (we are told) develops…
the other senator stays away from his senate job and continues to run
his mouth…continues to “do nothing-lead nothing” in the senate…
and being such a gift to our nation you would think he would fly (no
plane) back to the senate and “bring us together” with his “convincing
compromise style” he brags about so much.
One talks the talk and the other walks the walk.
Let this be a lesson to voters.

Very good. More proof Omaba is a cartoon character created by David Axelrod. There's no there there. Do you remember that Tim Conway character where he played a British Guard standing at attention, and Carol Burnett, playing the Queen, as I remember, would shout "HELLO" to the guard. And all you heard was her echo "helllooo, hellloo", coming out of Conway. Hollow man.

If I may paraphrase TS Elliot's The Hollow Men re Obama

I am the hollow man
I am the stuffed man
Leaning against myself

Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
My dry dry voice, when
I whisper to you

Is quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats’ feet over broken glass
In your dry cellar

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

Campaign

I've already heard people saying that McCain is not a good leader because he can't multi-task (campaign and fix the budget at the same time).

However, Obama made a statement yesterday that the McCain camp should broadcast hourly from now until election day.  He said he had been on the phone with Paulson and "If you need me, call me".

I do think that if McCain were smart, he would let Sarah do a few campaign speeches while he went back to D.C.  She could be acting as his voice to the people while the country is in crisis.

I like it!

There has to be a way to use that in campaign lit. Maybe a button?

"But not at 3AM."

"No call. No need. NObama."

A video, maybe, with Blondie's "Call Me" as soundtrack?

527 group (gothampc)

I hope that a 527 group makes an ad and runs it in every state. I can not remember more or equal arrogance ever being displayed by a presidential candidate.Anyone that is unclear as to to why he is referred to as the self appointed messiah should now know the reason.

What suspension?

Re-scheduling photo-ops, debates, speeches etc..., from one location to another (DC) is hardly what I would call a suspension. In fact, watching the candidates actions on this issue will speak much louder than hearing their same rehearsed drivel over and over and over. After listening to many takes and speeches on the bailout, I'm still against it. If McCain can convince me that it's in my best interest to involuntarily pony-up cash to help others maintain a lifestyle that requires 10-100 times what I earn, then great. I'll vote for him. If he doesn't convince me, and he votes for the bailout, well...since I have no intentions of furthering a socialist agenda, no matter who's pushing it, my vote will return to the undecided column. This couldn't have happened at a better time. Live performance review being integrated into a campaign. I love it.

Good Move...

In this seemingly unending campaign, how much more can or needs to be said about the candidates?

Aren't their positions clear?  Is there any doubt about the character, ethics, and honesty of each?  Do we really need more campaigning?

Obama blew this one, just like Ossetia.  Weak, unresponsive, waffling and gutless, he only came out with a 'position' after his party did.   This is leadership?

McCain, on the other hand, will seize a some juicy news cycles, make some serious hay on the economic front, and get more free press than anyone could pay for.

He looks and sounds presidential, is obviously driving forward on the weightiest issue in the country, and, for my nickel is showing himself to be every inch the statesman and leader this country needs.

Gamble?  Sure.  But at least McCain has the guts to do what he thinks is best for the country, grab the dice and let 'em roll.

"O" Dumby

Solving this crisis is above "O" Dumbys pay grade.

So as usual he runs from it. He says if you need me call me. Why because he knows they know he has no answers and can't help.

A 145 day senator? Give me a break. He's juat a Malato.

McCain to Washington

McCain to got to Washington and Obama would rather debate his teleprompter. McCain may be grandstanding, BUT this is serious! There is an old proverb that applies here: "If you are calm, cool and collected, while everyone around you is going crazy, chances are that you don't understand the situation!"

Congress

Asking a Democratic congress to fix this problem reminds me of the old addage of letting the (fox gaurd the hen house)

Or...

Fixing the barn door after the horses have run off

Wait and watch what

Wait and watch what happens. If Mac is smart, he will rip Obama on this after they get it settled. The ads he can put out after this, following Obamas actions could slam him real good. If Mac takes advantage of this, his campaign decision is good, if not, its bad.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

If You Need Me, Call Me

"If Mac is smart, he will rip Obama on this after they get it settled."

Unfortunately he's not.  Yesterday Obama said "If you need me, call me."  That clip should already be played in ads and be played from now until election day.

A simple ad

With McCain working on the bail out contrasted with Obama saying "If you need me, call me" , and asking the question "Which one is being presidential and which one just wants to be president"?

No contest!

"Unfortunately he's not.

"Unfortunately he's not. Yesterday Obama said "If you need me, call
me." That clip should already be played in ads and be played from now
until election day."

He can't play them in ads yet. He has suspended his cmapaign and pulled all his ads until after this bail out is pushed through.

If he doesn't do it once he resumes his campaign though.....

Remember, only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier

From an E-mail

From a retired AF Guy:

Hi Friends . . . . . I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of
AIG. Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a "We
Deserve
It Dividend."

To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide
U.S. Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and
child.

So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up.

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals
$425,000.00.

My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a "We Deserve It
Dividend."

Of course, it would NOT be tax free.

So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.

Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends
$25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam. But it means that every adult
18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife team has
$595,000.00.

What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?

Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved.

Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads.

Put away money for college - it'll be there.

Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs.

Buy a new car - create jobs.

Invest in the market - capital drives growth.

Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves.

Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else.

Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who
lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is
cutting back. And, of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of
trickling out a puny $1000.00 ("vote buy") economic incentive that is
being
proposed by one of our candidates for President.

If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult
US Citizen 18+!

As for AIG - liquidate it. Sell off its parts.
Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the
real estate.
Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.
Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't.

Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work."
But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party! How do you spell
Economic Boom?
I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion "We
Deserve It Dividend" more than do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington
DC.

And remember, This plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5
Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

Kindest personal regards,

A Citizen of the Republic.

There is some logic to this.(GRINS) kilrod

Remember, only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier

Ummm...kilrod.

I love your idea but, first let's crunch the numbers.

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals
$425,000.00.

I could be mistaken but, my calculator says $425.00

»→ Karma

The National Debt dividend is $8.5 Trillion, isn't it?  The divisor would remain at 200 million people

"Don't taze me bro" - Joe Biden

Yes, $42,500.00 would be better than $425.00

However, I still want the $425,000.00 kilrod promised me. I deserve it. I do.

Making Fun of AGW http://giovanniworld.wordpress.com/

How priceless would it be

How priceless would it be if Palin showed up at the debate instead, to fill in for McCain, who regrets that he had a national emergency to handle and could not attend?

Obama would be unprepared for such a situation. He'd have to either accept it and risk being upstaged by an "underqualified" VP candidate, or refuse to debate and look like he's afraid to go toe-to-toe with her. Plus he'd then be sitting there with nothing to do while McCain was actually trying to get some work done.

And if Obama "wins"... well, he only beat the VP candidate.

No win situation for Obama that would be.

of course

Last I knew, McCain is still a Senator (one with a record of actually doing something other than voting "present" and campaigning), with his salary paid for by the American taxpayer.  This yet again sets the tone on the difference in character between the two candidates.

Still US Senators

The last time I checked both McCain and Obama were sitting U.S. Senators. For only one of them to actually acknowledge that fact during turbulent times speaks volumns about each of them.

Now, it should be obvious to those of us who do not pay as close attention as the typical MB readers who is the leader and the better choice come this November. (Hint: It ain't the guy sayin' "Call me.")

Where Are The SENATORS

I have been saying for about a week now, there are three Senators, whose salaries *I* am paying, who need to get their butts back to DC to DO THE JOB FOR WHICH I AM PAYING THEM! I am NOT paying them to campaign while the country is in trouble! I want ALL THREE of them to get back there and DO THEIR JOBS!

Right now, they are Senators, not candidates.

Apparently, there are two Senators who do not feel that way. I wish I could fire them.

JoelCT, not to be picky,

JoelCT, not to be picky, but you only pay 2 senators. There are only 2 Senators per state.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Disagree

I believe senators are paid by taxes collected from everyone in the country, not just those in the state they represent.

Of course, if you live in Southern California, you help pay the salaries of 100 senators, while there aren't any that actually represent your interests [both Boxer and Feinstein are from the San Francisco area].
