James McGreeveyAP: 'Gay Ex-Governor Owes Wife No Alimony'... Name That Party?
To the AP, McGreevey is merely the "Former Gov." who has succeeded in winning a recent court case brought by his ex-wife who was seeking alimony. Oh, the AP gives us all sorts of information about our friend James McGreevey. The AP tells us that he was an acknowledged "gay American," we find out he was "the nation's first openly gay governor," and that McGreevey is now oddly a "seminary student." But, not once does the AP let us know he was a Democrat. In McGreevey Divorce Story, AP Omits Party Label, Errs on BackgroundIn a remarkable example of "Name that Party," the Associated Press, in an unbylined report about the beginning of his divorce trial appearing in USA Today, failed to name the party of former New Jersey Governor James McGreevey, who resigned in 2005, or of his former "male staffer." Beyond that, AP did not accurately describe the circumstances that triggered McGreevey's resignation. Here's how the report began (bold is mine; HT to an e-mailer):
'Today' Spends 4 Hours Ignoring the 'D' Next to Spitzer's Name
"Today" co-anchor Meredith Vieira set the tone when she ignored Spitzer's party affiliation as she opened the March 11, "Today" show: "Good morning, client number nine. New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, a hard-charging moral crusader caught in a federal sting involving a high-price call girl ring." NBC's Matt Lauer, also bypassing the "D" next to Spitzer's name, piped in: "Just when you thought you couldn't be shocked any more we go from Eliot Ness to Eliot Mess.
