Lauer Howler: Media 'Can’t Just Repeat Something Over and Over Until it Sounds True. It’s Not Fair'

By Noel Sheppard | March 25, 2013 | 10:01

A  A

NBC Today show host Matt Lauer isn't pleased with the press he got after the network's catastrophic removal of co-host Ann Curry last year.

In an interview with New York magazine published online Sunday evening, Lauer laughably whined, "When the media covers something, it’s important to do basic homework. You can’t just repeat something over and over again until it sounds true. It’s not fair."

Big Three Networks Punt on Covering Pennsylvania Abortionist's Murder Trial

By Matthew Balan | March 20, 2013 | 16:38

A  A

ABC, CBS, and NBC's morning and evening newscasts have yet to cover the trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, which began on Monday. Gosnell is charged with murdering seven babies who were born after viability in his rundown abortion facility. The Big Three also gave the story minimal coverage back in January 2011, after the Philadelphia physician was arrested. ABC completely ignored it, CBS Evening News aired one full story, and NBC gave just 50 words on Today.

Even the New York Times covered the trial in a Tuesday article, though it appeared on page A-17. Writer Jon Hurdle documented how Gosnell is charged with killing the babies by "plunging scissors into their necks and 'snipping' their spinal cords."

Anderson Cooper Reports Larry King 'Trying To Get Katie Couric in the Sack'

By Noel Sheppard | February 02, 2013 | 18:06

A  A

The folks at CNN sure have gotten smutty this year.

In the wake of Kathy Griffin kissing Anderson Cooper's crotch on New Year's Eve, and Piers Morgan having a truly raunchy discussion with Chelsea Handler earlier this week, Cooper on Friday reported a 1980s date as Larry King "trying to get Katie Couric in the sack" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Julianne Moore Praises Tina Fey and Katie Couric for Making 'Significant Difference in 2008 Election'

By Noel Sheppard | January 14, 2013 | 10:57

A  A

It certainly was no surprise that HBO's schlockudrama "Game Change" won best TV movie at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards.

But when Julianne Moore accepted her award for best actress for her role in said piece of detritus, it was truly sick-making hearing her say, "I'd like to give a shoutout to two people who I think made a significant difference in 2008 election, Tina Fey and Katie Couric" (video follows with commentary):

Network Gun Policy Stories In Late '90s Carried Exact Same Liberal Themes as 2012

By Tim Graham | December 20, 2012 | 19:17

A  A

If today's gun control debate seems a bit stale to you, you're not wrong. Twelve years ago, MRC's Geoffrey Dickens wrote a Special Report on network coverage of gun controversies over a two-year period from July 1997 to June 1999.

ABC, CBS, and NBC harped on several major themes in their coverage of gun policy stories. The arguments most commonly advanced by the network stars had one thought in common: guns are the problem. Check out just how similar yesterday's complaints were to today's:

Washington Post Mag Finds ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Harmed Demolition Derby

By Liz Thatcher | November 28, 2012 | 15:06

A  A

Cash for Clunkers, the failed Obama scheme to try to save the auto industry, is still wreaking havoc. This time on a an American pastime: demolition derby. Many in the news media applauded the clunker of a program, including The Washington Post which repeatedly praised this program in 2009, trumpeting and increase in consumer spending. But many of those stories also ignored the problems of the program.

Surprisingly, in the Nov. 21 edition of The Washington Post magazine, reporter David Montgomery wrote an article about the possible demise of demolition derby, a popular pastime in rural areas where competitors rebuild old cars in order to see which lasts the longest after they smash into one another. A number of problems are facing derby participants, including a shortage of old cars strong enough to be able to compete.

At 25th Anniversary Gala, Katie Couric 'Wins' MRC's 'Worst Reporter in the History of Man Award'

By NB Staff | September 28, 2012 | 10:00

A  A

NewsBusters's parent company the Media Research Center (MRC) today proudly announces that perky Katie Couric is the “winner” of the DisHonor of the Worst Reporter in the History of Man for her outrageously pathetic bias as chronicled by the MRC over the past quarter century.

The competition was fierce, but Couric was selected from a competitive field of finalists that included Bryant Gumbel, Brian Williams, and Dan Rather by the more than 1000 attendees who cheered and jeered throughout the evening to roast the liberal media's worst of the worst at the MRC's 25th Anniversary DisHonors Awards Gala. The event was held Thursday evening at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. WMAL personality Chris Plante served as emcee with media personalities Stephen Hayes, Laura Ingraham, and Jonah Goldberg on hand as award presenters. The Davisson Brothers Band provided live entertainment.

The MRC@25: The Worst Media Bias of the Past 25 Years

By Rich Noyes | September 27, 2012 | 10:50

A  A

For the past few weeks, NewsBusters has been showcasing the most egregious examples of liberal media bias the Media Research Center has uncovered in our 25-year history, all leading up to tonight’s 25th Anniversary Gala and DisHonors Awards in Washington, D.C.

To close out this series, I’ve pulled together what I consider the 25 most obnoxious quotes of the MRC’s history. It’s a pretty offensive display of smug disdain for everyday conservatives, rabid hatred for conservative leaders, embarrassing sycophancy for liberals, and a little anti-American treason thrown in for good measure.

These worst-of-the-worst quotes and video appear below the jump; or you can check out the year-by-year posts here.

The MRC@25: The Worst Media Bias of 2010

NewsBusters is showcasing the most egregious bias the Media Research Center has uncovered over the years — four quotes for each of the 25 years of the MRC, 100 quotes total — all leading up to our big 25th Anniversary Gala on Thursday evening.

Click here for posts recounting the worst of 1988 through 2009. Today, the worst bias of 2010: Journalists attack the Tea Party as Nazi “goons;” Arizona’s attempt to thwart illegal immigration is likened to the Nazi occupation of Denmark; and Katie Couric suggests a Muslim version of The Cosby Show as a remedy to American “bigotry.” [Quotes and video below the jump.]

Katie Couric Still Proud of 'Unparalleled' Political Coverage at CBS, Agrees Sexism Could Have Hurt Her Ratings

By Tim Graham | September 08, 2012 | 18:03

A  A

In an interview for Sunday's Parade magazine, Katie Couric tried to sell her failed reign at CBS as proving she's a risk-taker. "If I had been offered a traditional newscast, I probably wouldn’t have gone, because it didn’t necessarily play to my strengths. I like interacting with people, having conversations."

Couric is still proud of her political coverage, including the one liberals have honored her most for, the Palin-roasting one in 2008: "I did the best job I could, and I think our political coverage was unparalleled. I started in third place [in the ratings]. We stayed in third place. And CBS still is in third place. It was tough, but it was character-building." Then Parade's Dotson Rader suggested sexism might have ruined Couric at CBS:

The MRC@25: The Worst Media Bias of 1992

By Rich Noyes | September 06, 2012 | 07:58

A  A

Each morning, NewsBusters is showcasing the most egregious bias the Media Research Center has uncovered over the years — four quotes for each of the 25 years of the MRC, 100 quotes total — all leading up to our big 25th Anniversary Gala on September 27. (Click here for ticket information)

Already this week, we’ve published the worst quotes of 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991. Today, the worst bias of 1992. Highlights include Eleanor “Cougar” Clift ogling the new Democratic ticket of Clinton and Gore (“I was struck by the expanse of their chests. They may have to put out their stats”), and onetime NBC Nightly News anchor John Chancellor opining that it was "embarrassing" that the U.S. had so few casualties in the first Gulf War. The Media vs. the GOP: Intolerant, Anti-Women, and Always Too Conservative

By Rich Noyes | August 27, 2012 | 09:02

A  A

Bad weather may have forced Vice President Joe Biden to skip his plans to make mischief at this week’s Republican National Convention in Tampa, but Democrats don’t have to worry: the liberal “news” media have been “counter-programming” GOP conventions for decades.

It doesn’t matter whether the nominee is a conservative like Ronald Reagan, or a moderate like John McCain — network reporters always seem to scold the delegates and platform as too conservative, hostile to women, anathema to blacks, and an all-around turn-off to voters. [Below the jump: Video montage of the media's anti-GOP bias, 1988-2008]

By Noel Sheppard | August 23, 2012 | 10:13

For those that have been sleeping or out of the country, Katie Couric has a new daytime talk show premiering next month.

Likely to no one's surprise, she told NBC Tonight Show host Jay Leno Wednesday, "We have extended an invitation to Governor Palin" to appear. "So far, we have not heard back from their people" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
