Global Warming for the Holidays: Have a Green Thanksgiving

By Noel Sheppard | November 21, 2007 | 11:41

A  A

When this first appeared in my inbox, I thought it was a joke from one of the many satirical websites on the Internet which regularly lampoon the liberal bogeyman disaffectionately known as global warming.

Then, I thought the good folks at the Washington Times were having a little fun the day before Thanksgiving highlighting tips to make your holiday more eco-friendly.

Sadly, a visit to the World Wildlife Fund's website proved that the joke's on us as the largest multinational conservation organization in the world offered readers ten tips for a greener Thanksgiving:

Katie Couric Ready for Her Closeup

By Matthew Sheffield | November 16, 2007 | 19:59

A  A

Katie Couric was caught in a candid moment recently as a camera operator taped her preparations before the night's "CBS Evening News.

The video below has been all over the web. Some think it's hilarious, others a waste of time. Me, I think it's more reminiscent of the John Edwards hair video.

Anyway, here's the clip:

Gore Loses CNN Sighing Oscar to O.J.

By Mark Finkelstein | November 15, 2007 | 18:06

A  A
In recent times, Al Gore has been in the winner's circle. From the Oscar to the Nobel to NBC's adoring Green Week, Al has known nothing but triumph.

Imagine his chagrin, then, to learn that in one important category he has lost out to none other than . . . O.J. Simpson.

HuffPo 'Humor' Site Debuts

By Matthew Sheffield | November 13, 2007 | 11:18

A  A

Arianna Huffington trying to be funny. That's scary as a concept, in actual practice it's simply unfunny as you can see by visiting 23/6, her new comedy site. Ace pretty much sums it up:

Why 23/6? Because it's not 24/7, and see their motto is "Some of the news, most of the time."

Note that the 1/2 Hour News Hour took quite a shellacking for its uninspired time-based gag name. Arianna Huffington decided that that well wasn't quite dry, and tried her hand it.

Enjoy the ineptness. The next time a liberal claims that liberals are funny whereas conservatives are dour, just shoot him the 236.com url and collect your big pile of win.

Please also note the hugely outdated "SwiftKids for Truth" ads which are parodying something from the 2004 election. Guess no one forgot to tell them comedy does have a shelf-life.

'The Simpsons' Nails the NYT: Helping Aliens Invade?

By Scott Whitlock | November 05, 2007 | 15:55

A  A

On Sunday night's episode of "The Simpsons," the normally left-leaning cartoon show took a jab at the New York Times and suggested that the liberal newspaper just might end up helping aliens attempting to invade the Earth. During the Halloween special, a visitor from another planet requested that Lisa help him find the "secret locations of your country's missile defense facilities." The younger Simpson excitedly replied, "They were in yesterday's New York Times!"

A transcript of the exchange, which occurred at around 8:10pm on November 4, follows:

KANG: You are very observant, Lisa. That's why I have a special job for you. Go find out the secret locations of your country's missile defense facilities.

LISA SIMPSON: They were in yesterday's New York Times!

Brian Williams on SNL: Solid, Not Hilarious, But TV Critics Swoon

By Tim Graham | November 05, 2007 | 00:14

A  A

TV Newser sums up the Brian Williams gig on Saturday Night live here. NB fans probably would have found it interesting (if not so funny) that Williams opened a presidential-debate skit by telling the Democratic also-rans several times that Sen. Hillary Clinton will appear in the center of the stage, since "all of us in the media want her to be the nominee!" The joke also included that she would get a 15-minute interview to herself before the event started, since the media so favored her.

Inside the media, the reviews were chummy. Tom Shales of the Washington Post offered a thumbs up:

Brian Williams neither took nor gave a pie in the face when he made history this weekend as the first network anchor to host NBC's "Saturday Night Live." Williams is NBC's, too, and the gig was supposed to help loosen up and polish up his image, making him not just an anchor but a friend.

Halloween Captionfest: Rosie and Martha Stewart

By Ken Shepherd | October 31, 2007 | 14:07

A  A

O'Donnell was a guest on Martha Stewart's Halloween program and was ostensibly dressed as Queen Elizabeth I, who presided over a fledgling Royal Navy that defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588. Their ships were fashioned of wood then, probably because fire didn't always melt steel.

What's with going for Queen Elizabeth, though? Some hidden message about "View" co-star Elisabeth Hasselbeck? And given her volatile personality, the antagonism between Queens Mary and Elizabeth, and the ghost fable by the same name, wouldn't "Bloody Mary" have been a better choice?

Leave your captions, but don't be too mean or I'm shooting a Koosh ball at you.

AFP/Yahoo! News Don't Have a Clue

By Mithridate Ombud | October 23, 2007 | 05:13

A  A
You may have seen one of the 19,000 mentions of the "Home-made helicopters from Northern Nigeria." Once the AFP article hit Yahoo! News, it crossed the blogosphere like wild fire. I highly doubt it is true, and if journalists knew the first thing about flight, they might not have been so easily duped.

For starters, let's look at the measurements provided by the journalist.

For a four-seater it is a big aircraft, measuring twelve metres (39 feet) long, seven metres high by five wide.

Seven meters high? That's 23 feet tall. Does the photograph look like the helicopter is over two stories tall and 39 feet long? But the real problem with the story is with the tail rotor -- or lack thereof. France 24 has several more of the photos of this "helicopter", and in the one where the "pilot" is opening the cardboard flap that covers the engine, you can see that there is no axle to turn the tail rotor. The tail rotor, which keeps a real helicopter from spinning the same speed as the main rotor, is purely aesthetic.

The reporter claims this helicopter has "flown briefly on six occasions" at an "altitude of seven feet", but the reporter fails to corroborate this with any other witnesses. In true journalism fashion, the reporter takes a shot at a government for allegedly not supporting the wild ideas of this dreamer:

Although some government officials got very excited when they saw him conduct a demonstration flight in neighbouring Katsina state, Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has so far shown no interest in his aircraft. "No one from the NCAA has come to see what I've done. We don't reward talent in this country," he lamented.... In a country with Nigeria's abysmal air safety record officials may be loath to gamble on one student's home-made helicopter.

Who are the "government officials" who "got very excited"? What were they excited about? What exactly did the reporter expect the government to "gamble on"?

Newsweek Makes Multiple Errors in Simple Piece on Rudy Advisers

"...for Newsweek staff, all conservatives look alike."

Thus is the complaint of Rudy Giuliani adviser Daniel Pipes, reacting to Newsweek erroneously confusing him with fellow Giuliani backer Martin Kramer, and pretty much mixing and matching all but one of the Giuliani foreign policy adviser photos.

Powerline has more here:

Earlier this week we noted the correction posted online by Newsweek for the sidebar above that runs in the current issue:

NPR Satire Has a Dumb Justice Thomas Calling Scalia 'Boss'

By Tim Graham | October 14, 2007 | 07:57

A  A

Back in March, liberals tried to make a major controversy out of Rush Limbaugh’s parody of Al Sharpton singing "Barack the Magic Negro" (to the tune of "Puff the Magic Dragon") even though it borrowed the "magic negro" term from a black writer in the Los Angeles Times. Critics thought it was racist and made Sharpton sound like an idiot. One blogger called for station managers to drop Limbaugh and this "worst kind of vile, demeaning garbage." It even became a news story on NBC.

But what about when the left does a similar kind of satire against Clarence Thomas – and on National Public Radio, no less? On October 1, the first day of the Supreme Court’s new term, NPR’s All Things Considered aired a parody by Bruce Kluger and David Slavin, using ethnic and racial stereotyping for Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Antonin Scalia, and Thomas. Scalia is pitched as the Godfather (complete with notes from the "Godfather" soundtrack) and Thomas is mocked as Scalia’s goon, who repeats everything Scalia says and even calls him "Boss." Fake Thomas also seems well-versed in the signals of public-restroom sex. (You have to hear it to believe it. Audio here.)

Mika's Cheney-Darth Vader Mock Jolts Joe to Dial 1-800-NEWSBUSTERS

By Mark Finkelstein | October 12, 2007 | 08:29

A  A

Sure, we know when we're being used. The folks at "Morning Joe" are well aware that if baring some liberal leg is likely to cause us to cover them, mentioning NewsBusters by name virtually guarantees that an item will follow here in short order. But if the MSNBC show wants to play the homely-if-roundheeled high school girl striving for attention, NB is happy, as the popular QB of liberal-media busting, to oblige.

And so it was that on this morning's episode, newsreader Mika Brzezinski, much like the girl at the beach who "accidentally" lets the bikini strap slip, made a transparently intentional "mistake," confusing Dick Cheney with Darth Vader. That in turn prompted host Joe Scarborough, in mock horror at Mika's exposure of too much liberal skin, to call for NewsBusters. The incident occurred during Mika's 6:11 A.M. EDT newsreading of an otherwise innocuous item.

Conservative Cartoonists Cox & Forkum Say Goodbye

By Lynn Davidson | October 01, 2007 | 00:08

A  A

Sad news. Cox & Forkum are no more. John Cox and Allen Forkum hung up their spurs and turned their horses out to pasture.

Through their editorial cartoons, John Cox and Allen Forkum poked fun at liberal silliness—and conservative silliness, but today's drawing, called "Final Bow," was their last regular edition.

Since August 2001, Cox & Forkum took on everything from 9/11 to the recent Washington Post “Opus” drama and did it all with biting wit and professional pen work.

In a September 30 goodbye post, Forkum explained their future plans and gave a little insight into why they are stopping:
