Today's starters:

The global warming crowd must be getting desperate judging from a very threatening letter that some senators sent to ExxonMobil telling it to "end any further financial assistance or other support to groups or individuals whose public advocacy has contributed to the small, but unfortunately effective, climate change denial myth." Sounds more like a protection racket than a policy debate to me.

The Supreme Court is hearing a case about forced integration and whether it should be permitted. Patterico and La Shawn Barber have coverage.

On the Iraq front, The Anchoress blog has a lengthy essay on where Iraq is right now and what it means. An excerpt: "Damn Bush for getting us into this corner where all options suck, eh? Well, maybe. But sooner or later someone was going to have to do this. 9/11 made it imperative and regardless of what they say now, the whole world (at that point) believed Saddam had WMD. He was ignoring the UN, violating no fly zones and had threatened to assassinate a former president - a clear act of war which, btw, had it been answered back then, might have made our current reality quite different indeed."

Like NB's Mark Finkelstein did last month, Bill Roggio is blogging from Iraq. Most of the troops there are far from happy with the press's coverage of the war: "In nearly every conversation, the soldiers, Marines and contractors expressed they were upset with the coverage of the war in Iraq in general, and the public perception of the daily situation on the ground. The felt the media was there to sensationalize the news, and several stated some reporters were only interested in 'blood and guts.' They freely admitted the obstacles in front of them in Iraq. Most recognized that while we are winning the war on the battlefield, albeit with difficulties in some areas, we are losing the information war. They felt the media had abandoned them."

That raid was conducted after police investigators found marijuana seeds in the family trash.

I just have a real problem with Cops busting in to someones home after finding pot seeds in the trash.  When you combine that with many of the seizure laws going around, where any cash you are carrying beyond what the government thinks is reasonable can be confiscated on the spot, then I think we are headed for problems.

Personally, I could not care less if someone sits in their living room and smokes crack until their brains run out of their ears.  As long as they are putting no one else in danger, I have no problem with it. It isn't worth the lives of innocent people for the cops to be kicking down doors.

On those damn cops

I'm more worried about cops harassing ordinary people because they are on a power trip because someone gave them a gun and a badge (we have unmarked cars that routinely pull people over here for instance) than I am with cops doing their jobs and preventing the rot of American society.  I ordinarily wouldn't care about crack addicts and pot smokers, if I didn't think they could do more productive things (and therefore make themselves, their towns, and eventually the United States better off) with their lives.

Given that the illicit drug trade is essentially a black market, which is the purest form of capitalism there is, legalization would remove the incentive to participate by severely lowering the price of the commodity. Many people in the drug trade are not users-they are in it solely for the profit potential.  Remove that, and the drug “problem” will be well on its way to resolving itself.

Or maybe we'll just give the

Or maybe we'll just give the green light to lots of people to shoot up, get baked, or whatever, and lose plenty of otherwise productive citizens.  Who cares, right?  So much for the drug problem resolving itself...

Although I WILL say this: if you get your wish and drugs get legalized, I will scrape up as much change as possible, empty ALL of my accounts, and invest it ALL in the stock of Frito Lay.  I'll be a billionaire in a year's time.

0 real-world proof, as usual, but then, Clinton's "Drug Czar" also didn't believe Amsterdam existed except when he was making-up statistics...The UK, not the Netherlands, has Europe's worst heroin problems despite prohibitionist laws. Wanting drugs to be legal again != wanting people to use drugs. Indeed, in this holy instance, conservatives seem able to forget the old "power to tax is the power to destroy" adage that's otherwise constantly on their lips. But let's ignore this potentially-huge revenue source while drowning in a sea of red ink!! After all, prohibition is working SO well...

Yes, law enforcement DOES make mistakes, but in your view, they should either be 100% perfect all the time (being a human institution, that is impossible) or they should not exist at all.  I know this pains you, but I really don't want an American full of burnouts who shoot up and get baked all the time, and therefore reducing America's standing as the world's premier civilization.  You love the Netherlands so much in that regard, but in reality, they haven't done a damn thing since the early 1800s or so.  Hmmmm...the United States, or the Netherlands...decisions, decisions...

I am not the one advocating that we allow for an ultra-permissive, as-close-to-total-anarchy-as-we-can-get-it society just because of one unfortunate mistake.  I am disheartened to note that you think of me as a slavish devotee to law enforcement.  I am not in any way, in fact, I have no love, and less trust, of law enforcement in general (too many run-ins with the power trippers over total bullsh*t).  However, when they DO make a mistake like this, we investigate the living hell out of their whiny asses, as to give those cops that WANT to be and ARE the standards of professionalism (they are out there!) a little credit and to aid them in the accomplishment of their duties.  Among their duties: preventing the rotting and self-destruction of American society via drugs.

Unsane - legalization of drugs

Unsane - legalization of drugs:

I have held, until about two years ago, one of the strongest anti drug use and anti drug legalization opinions a person could have. I have a twenty year old son. His life is ruined because of drugs. His use of them and his run in with the law. I will try to make this as brief as I can... He was at a friend's house. His friend's older brother (Phil) asked my son if he wanted to make a  quick $25. My son said he would. Phil said "Give me $25 for this stuff and then take it out in the other room and give it to the guy in the blue jacket. He will give you $50 for it". My son asked Phil why he wouldn't do it himself. Phil told him he had trouble with the buyer and he didn't want to talk to him. My son did it and got the $50 for a profit. Three months, yes, I said three months later, two sheriff;s deputies showed up at our house and arrested my son. It turns out that the police told Phil they would let him off from his drug charge if he helped them to make 5 busts. My son was 17 and stupid. He had never sold drugs before,  although I found out later, he had bought some from Phil. It turns out that the customer was an undercover policeman who had set it all up with Phil. Four other young men were arrested and convicted under the same scam. One of them was a little luckier than the others because his little trade was marijuana not Meth. My son has a felony conviction record to haunt him for the rest of his life. As I got involved in this world,(drug busts, lawyers, police, etc.), I found many young people having the same problem. Sure, one can always say, he or she didn't have to do it. In my opinion. that is denying the nature of unsophisticated teenagers. Until his trial, my son protected his friend Phil. Then when the witnesses came forth, there was dear old Phil. The arresting oficer no longer worked for the county. The desire to run up the "bust" numbers is causing the police to resort to underhanded trickery. I am not over the fence yet on legalization but I am teetering. I live in a reasonable affluent county. A large percentage of college grad parents w/good incomes. Prime territory (among others) to come in and tempt young people to ruin their lives. My son is working for minimum wage and happy to have the job. If that is what drug enforcement and keeping drugs illegal is about----well----I have a lot more thinking to do on it!!!!!

Please do not sit there and think, "He cannot control his children". I have four others who are quite successful in life and did not have this problem. The drug problem has grown more intense compared to when they were 17 years old.

If you have a solution. Please let me know. I am just a heartbroken older father who just wants to help my son fix his life.

There is more to the story, but this part is enough. My son does not use drugs now and is supporting his infant daughter on a minimum wage salary. He kicked his Meth usage on his own, which is quite an accomplishment. But who cares about that----we got x number more busts and convictions. Hoorah!!!!!!!!

I have a relation of my own w

I have a relation of my own who is determined to self-destruct over this business as well.  The sad fact is that I have known too many people who have been effected by drugs for me to ever support giving the green light to people selling them legally/whatever/however.  It's just another corrosive on society that should be stopped.  (And for those of you who want to cite Prohibition to me, a penny for your thoughts - there is still plenty a county in TX that is dry.  The 21st Amendment allows for states to regulate alcohol on their own; TX further devolves that to its 254 counties to decide.)

May your son's future continue to look up.  I have a sister to keep an eye on...

A few months ago I heard a report on the radio of a town in NM (maybe San Cristobal?) that some activist has brought a suit against because it's a religious name. IIRC, the name of this town precedes the formation of the United States and our Constitution. Yet, this activist takes umbrage at the religious genesis of this town's name.

I might have the name of the town wrong, nevertheless, it's a town in New Mexico.

I believe you may be thinking of San Cruces, NM (sp?), a town which is on the receiving end of a lawsuit because it has crosses (namesake of the town) on public property.

I believe this town also pre-dates the constitution...there are many old towns in the southwest that were founded by catholic priests who came north from Mexico.

I once visited the oldest active Catholic Church in the U.S. .... St. Xavier, which is between Phoenix and Tuscon....I don't know if that is also the name of the town as well.  It was fascinating, and beautiful, and historic.

These "activists" need to move to Iceland, or somewhere else where nothing would offend them.  Or get a life.

Blonde, you are probably correct. It was one of those reports I heard on a talk show and my thought was, oh great, here we go again.

Couple of years ago the ACLU was going to sue LA County over the cross on a mission on the County Seal. Of course LA County supervisors rolled over to "avoid a costly legal battle." This despite several lawyers stepping forward offering their services pro bono to fight the ACLU's challenge. Something similiar happened to Redlands, CA over their seal a short time after the LA County thing.

That's exactly what the ACLU counts on - the challenged rolling over to avoid the expense.

John....The ACLU...ruination

John....

The ACLU...ruination of all things good.

It's kind of like buying a house in the flight pattern of an airport.  It's a great deal...but also a great deal of noise.  So the price is good.  Someone buys the house, and a year later complains about the noise, ad nauseum.

I believe our fellow poster here, fossten, is in law school, and has stated one of his professional goals is to take them down in a court of law.  So a big shout out to fossten....

Blonde, understand the flig

Blonde, understand the flight pattern issue. Was at NAS Oceana for 19 years. The base constantly fought encroachment. The encroaching developments weren't happy when we had to fly late at night. They weren't happy when several squadrons were all preparing for deployments at the same time and the flight frequency dramatically increased.

I mean sheeesh, they bought a house next to a Navy air base that had been there since WW2 when it was nothing but farmland. What did they expect.

I"d love to see someone take down the ACLU. It's a scourge on our society. Someone argued with me once that every once in awhile the ACLU gets something right. Great, once or twice out of every hundred. I'll take my chances without the ACLU. Bet they've never defended or fought a case in favor of Second Amendment rights.

Forgive me for jumping in. I feel bad for the poor woman - who obviously was simply trying to avoid "offending". But it is pretty dumb to strike a match in an aircraft these days. I'm willing to guess that it's a habit she's gotten into and she wasn't thinking - since it was mentioned that she has a medical condition. I think it a bit extreme that American Airlines refused to allow her back on the plane and has banned her from future flights.

Must admit though, this story is a pleasant diversion from the likes of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

How about this starter topic: how PC the Ad Council has become.  Note the banner above (could be showing right now) decrying the lack of girls interested in math and science and the exhortation that we all visit girlsgotech.org to correct this horrible injustice.

I could be a sexist, evil man for proposing this, but why not do this: encourage EVERYONE, no matter what their gender, race, or whatever, to (gasp!) follow their passions, whatever they are (provided they are not destructive or self-destructive naturally).  If there are fewer women who are scientists or in math-intensive fields, so what?  Should we have a website called mengotocollege.org?  Because after all, more women than men have been getting college degrees for the past 20+ years now, and that is just an unfair, unequal outcome we shouldn't tolerate!

It has come to my attention that many of you are upset that folks are taking My name out of the season. Maybe you've forgotten that I wasn't actually born during this time of the year and that it was some of your predecessors
who decided to celebrate My birthday on what was actually a time of pagan festival; although, I do appreciate being remembered anytime.

How I personally feel about this celebration can probably be most easily understood by those of you who have been blessed with children of your own; I don't care what you call the day. If you want to celebrate My birth just, GET ALONG AND LOVE ONE ANOTHER; Now, having said that let Me go on.

If it bothers you that the town in which you live doe'sn't allow a scene depicting My birth, then just get rid of a couple of Santas and snowmen and put in a small Nativity scene on your own front lawn. If all My followers did that there wouldn't be any need for such a scene on the town square because there would be many of them all around town.

Stop worrying about the fact that people are calling the tree a holiday tree, instead of a Christmas tree; It was I who made all trees. You can and may remember Me anytime you see any tree. Decorate a grape vine if you wish: I actually spoke of that one in a teaching that explains who I am in relation to you and what each of our tasks are. If you have forgot that one, look at John 15:1-8.

If you want to give Me a present in remembrance of My birth here is my wish list. Choose something from it.

1. Instead of writing protest letters objecting to the way My birthday is being celebrated, write letters of love and hope to soldiers away from home. They are terribly afraid and lonely this time of year. I know, they tell Me all the time.
2. Visit someone in a nursing home. You don't have to know them personally.  They just need to know that someone cares about them.
3. Instead of writing George complaining about the wording on the cards his staff sent out this year, why don't you write and tell him that you'll be praying for him and his family this year. Then follow up. It will be nice hearing from you again.
4. Instead of giving your children a lot of gifts you can't afford and they don't need, spend time with them. Tell them the story of My birth and why I came to live with you down here. Hold them in your arms and remind them that
I love them.
5. Pick someone who has hurt you in the past and forgive him or her.
6. Did you know that someone in your town will attempt to take their own life this season because they feel so alone and hopeless? Since you don't know who that person is, try giving everyone you meet a warm smile it could make the difference. Also, you might consider supporting the local Hot-Line - they talk with people like that every day.
7. Instead of nit picking about what the retailer in your town calls the holiday, be patient with the people who work there. Give them a warm smile and a kind word. Even if they aren't allowed to wish you a Merry Christmas that doesn't keep you from wishing them one. Then stop shopping there on Sunday. If the store didn't make so much money on that day they'd close and let their employees spend the day at home with their families.
8. If you really want to make a difference, support a missionary, especially one who takes My love and Good News to those who have never heard My name. You may already know someone like that.
9. Here's a good one. There are individuals and whole families in your town who not only will have no Christmas tree, but neither will they have any presents to give or receive. If you don't know them (and I suspect you don't) buy some food and a few gifts and give them to the Marines, the Salvation Army or some other charity that believes in Me and they will make the delivery for you.
10. Finally if you want to make a statement about your belief in and loyalty to Me, then behave like a Christian. Don't do things in secret that you wouldn't do in My presence. Let people know by your actions that you are one of mine.

P.S. Don't forget; I am God and can take care of Myself. Just love Me and do what I have told you to do. I'll take care of all the rest. Check out the list above and get to work; time is short. I'll help you, but the ball is now in your court.

And do have a most blessed Christmas with all those you love and, remember, I LOVE YOU.

Jesus!!

James Taranto's offers this

James Taranto offers this devastating analysis of the way racist leftists continue to do a great disservice to the ideals of a man they profess to admire so much, Dr. Martin Luther King.

Let's just judge them by their character...

How 'Integration' Became Discrimination
The New York Times reports on an important case the Supreme Court heard yesterday:

By the time the Supreme Court finished hearing arguments on Monday on the student-assignment plans that two urban school systems use to maintain racial integration, the only question was how far the court would go in ruling such plans unconstitutional.

There seemed little prospect that either the Louisville, Ky., or Seattle plans would survive the hostile scrutiny of the court's new majority. In each system, students are offered a choice of schools but can be denied admission based on their race if enrolling at a particular school would upset the racial
balance.

At its most profound, the debate among the justices was over whether measures designed to maintain or achieve integration should be subjected to the same harsh scrutiny to which Brown v. Board of Education subjected the regime of official segregation. In the view of the conservative majority, the answer was yes.

But liberal justices disagreed:

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg tried unsuccessfully to turn the chief justice's colloquy with [Seattle lawyer Michael] Madden in a different direction. The question of whether "using racial integration is the same as segregation," she said, was "pretty far from the kind of headlines that attended the Brown
decision."

Bringing "white and black children together on the same school bench," Justice Ginsburg continued, "seems to be worlds apart from saying we'll separate them."

The fundamental dispute is whether antidiscrimination laws--the 14th Amendment and, by implication, the Civil Rights Act of 1964--ban discrimination altogether, or only in the pursuit of invidious ends. Broadly stated, the
"conservative" position is that these laws protect individuals from discrimination, whereas the "liberal" position is that discrimination is fine in
the pursuit of "diversity" or integration but not of white supremacy.

Liberals, in other words, are much more apt to say that the ends justify the means. As Justice Harry Blackmun wrote in University
of California v. Bakke
, "In order to get beyond racism, we must first take account of race. . . . And in order to treat some persons equally, we must treat them differently."

That was in 1978. Twenty-five years later, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, in
Grutter
v. Bollinger
,
upheld some racial discrimination in higher education, but wrote that she expects the need for them to have passed in another 25 years. Justice Ginsburg made a point of disagreeing, saying that one may only "hope" that it will be "safe to sunset affirmative action."

There is a curious disconnect here. "Affirmative action" is politically unpopular, having been banned by initiative in three liberal states (California, Michigan and Washington). With Justice Samuel Alito having replaced O'Connor, its legal status is shaky.

In any case, it has always been presented as only a temporary measure--a way, as Justice Blackmun put it, "to get beyond racism." Yet affirmative action's advocates act as if it is here to stay. For them, discrimination is no longer a means to an end but an end in itself. The Seattle
Public Schools
Web site has a statement on its Web site that expressly disavows the goal of getting beyond racism:

The intended purpose of our work in the area of race and social justice is to bring communities together through open dialogue and honest reflection around what is meant by racism and the impact is has on our society, and more specifically, our students. Our intention is not to put up additional barriers or develop an "us against them" mindset; nor is it to continue to hold onto
unsuccessful concepts such as a melting pot or colorblind mentality.

As George Will notes, this statement replaced one that was much worse:

Until June, the school district's Web site declared that "cultural racism''
includes "emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology,''
"having a future time orientation'' (planning ahead) and "defining one form of English as standard.'' The site also asserted that only whites can be racists, and disparaged assimilation as the "giving up'' of one's culture.

This is in fact baldly racist. In concept it is distinguishable from white
supremacy only in its refusal to condone value judgments. But the real world imposes its own "value judgments," and in practice it seems obviously pernicious to inculcate black children with the idea that because of the color of their skin, they cannot learn to plan ahead or to speak standard English.

Advocates of affirmative action, thus, have abandoned the goal of "getting
beyond racism," upon which it was originally imposed on the public. Affirmative action has become a way of perpetuating discrimination rather than overcoming it. It is, at best, an experiment that has failed.

Screwed Up Things

Well, I posted this early this morning on yesterday's open thread....

But I am totally annoyed about it.

How dare the French come here, and propose to put an offshore Gas Plant within my view....all the while drilling in the Gulf of Mexico is prohibited?

And if you read the article.....some people seem to think this is okay.

Please take a close look at the map in the article (on the right hand side under "Graphics"....click on it...and blow it up so you can see it well).  Do you see the road that is "Atlantic Boulevard"?  My house is about two miles north of there....which makes this floating bomb about eight miles from my home....and you notice what a catastrophic bomb incident would occur if, um, by chance, the thing went bloooey????

I have a hard time with the day-to-day idiocy that I see....but this story is really too much for me to comprehend.

To the French.....I say...get out, stay out, I only want to see your hands over your head's while I watch your chicken rear ends march away from me.  How dare they even propose such a thing?  I am beside myself with anger.

Lafarge

Well, if it makes you feel any better, about 15 years ago the Lafarge Corporation (French) thought it would be a great idea to try to burn hazardous waste at one of their quarries north of here (there are a lot of quarries, abandoned and active, and facilities for the making of cement around here due to this area sitting atop one of the largest, most economical to reach limestone veins in the world).  People in a neighboring town threw a fit and put an end to that...

Any suggestions for ambassador to the UN?

Listening to a little bit of CSPAN this morning...I heard some callers suggesting Bill Clintoon for the next ambassador for the UN....(sound familiar to posters here that have been here for awhile? I said I wold bet he would try for it (as part of his legacy if he could get it) before I had ever really heard of John Bolton. Of course that will happen when pigs fly.

Losing John Bolton is a disgrace to this country if we insist on staying in the UN....disgraceful.

I am just curious...how about any suggestions who you would think would be a great replacement? Even if he/she has to be appointed during a recess, if not confirmed?

This could be interesting, let alone fun!....

I will be so furious that it will shatter everything I still believe in when it comes to President Bush...and some of those things have already been a disappointment over the years as I have stated when I saw fit.

UN Ambassador

Barbara Bush.

How on earth could the dem's bash her?

And she's old enough to get away with whatever the hell she feels like saying.

John Bolton has my undying admiration for the job he tried to do, while being dissed by the idiot congresscritters.

Mitchell?  I don't have words for that idiocy.

I hope George Bush gets a clue, and soon.  Otherwise his "legacy", and all that has been good about his administration....is down the tubes.

Allen Keyes/George Allen

Okay...I am going to throw one out there...George Allen! (Anyone recall how he supported Bolton? He asked something from reporters about what he thought about Bolton's nomination to the UN... Allen replied "Do we want someone who raises their pinkie finger when drinking tea to be head of the UN?".. ..

Anyway, it would be funny.

On the other side how about Allen Keyes? He has been an ambassador before to something, and he is black, and very conservative....hehehheeee.....delicious! Plus one of my favorite politicians!

Come to think of it...they would make a great team to run in '08!

Give a Democrat Party free America a chance!

Whoever is ultimately the U

Whoever is ultimately the US Ambassador to the UN, it has to be someone who is aboard with the President's and State philosophy on foreign policy. Can't afford to have a "free agent" at the UN acting contrary to the philosophy of the administration.

Of course, I'm sure the dems would rather have anyone they thought would conduct their own personal foreign policy at the UN - especially if it's an appeasement policy toward thugs and dictators.

It's apparently "incoherent black dude night" on Hannity & Colmes. I wish Fox News would give 10% of the coverage they give to these nutcases to "my" nutcases, but I guess the "New Black Panther Party" is that much bigger than the Libertarians and nobody else ever-noticed. Either that, or Fox News is being unfair when they give so much airtime to the unbalanced, as I said before when they gave Sharpton the fawning hours-long "interview." Sigh...

Got to get for the night...long day tomorrow...

You are correct though...that is for sure...why they keep giving these useless wonders airtime is beyond me, I saw the segment tonight, I was angry they have these racists on. Again!

I would much rather listen to a Libertarian (especially since I used to think I was one) or any third party than these creatures.

You have a good one!

The problem is, Libertarian

The problem is, Libertarians -- even the one with the funny-looking blue skin from taking too much silver -- tend to sound more-normal than the news media caricature would have us. Still, I think I've made a pretty good case here for antiLibertarian bias on Fox News (let alone the other networks, but I've focused on Fox for a reason -- they claim fairness & balance). I'll keep making the case, and they can keep ignoring libertarians in favor of fringe-nutcases like tonight's racists, if they want to keep looking biased. I love the internet...

Dreamgirls: Will White People Stay Away?

The movie Dreamgirls, is a movie with 4 black stars leading the way to tell a story about a trio of black female singers that cross over to pop in the early 1960's. The movie has gotten some very TEPID reviews and then some obligatory praises from the PC crowd reviewers, but criticism is being drawn toward the predictable overacting and lack of believability of a few of the characters, almost cartoonish.

However this isn't the main concern. A VERY big question is in reaction to the recent lack of forgiveness toward Michael Richards and the constant in your face attitudes of many black leaders...have many white people had enough and will they demonstrate their protest toward racist and hateful black attitudes by avoiding and not going to this film? Will they vote NO with their pocket books to the very segregative attitudes and racist ideology promoted by Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and it appears at times by Jamie Foxx who liked white money until he got a lot of it and decided that suddenly there are serious issues with white attitudes in America, at least by the opinon of some.

There is a fear that with a lot of money invested and a lot of leading blacks who purport to have a big $$$ draw, though Jamie Foxx has gone south in box office results since Ray, that whites have sense a certain rejection and hatred toward blacks socially and are inclined to not be interested in a movie like this because of the environment of hatred and refusal to accept white culture by many blacks and hence express themselves with an unintended but obvious boycott.

Will this happen? The benchmark is $100,000,000.00 in theater take for success and anything less that $75,000,000.00 in this case will be considered a bomb. We shall see.

Yes I know, some want to run and hide or call names when obvious and needed questions are asked. For the faint of heart I recommend you move onward to the lady's section.

If you claim to be a conservative, please don't disgrace yourself and conservatism by thinking and arguing like a liberal.

On a Wing and a Prayer Grieva

On a Wing and a Prayer

Grievance theater at Minneapolis International Airport.

Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Those are the words that started it all. Six bearded imams are said to have shouted them out while offering evening prayers as they and 141 other passengers waited at the gate for their flight out of Minneapolis International Airport. It was three days before Thanksgiving. Allahu Akbar: God is great.

Initial media reports of the incident did not include the disturbing details about what happened after they boarded US Airways flight 300, but the story quickly went national with provocative headlines: "Six Muslims Ejected from US Air Flight for Praying." Yes, they were praying--but let's be clear about this. The very last human sound on the cockpit voice recorder of United flight 93 before it screamed into the ground at 580 miles per hour is the sound of male voices shouting "Allahu Akbar" in a moment of religious ecstasy.

They, too, were praying. The passengers and crew of flight 93 lost their valiant fight to take back the plane just one hour and 20 minutes after it pushed back from the gate. Until the hijackers stormed the cockpit door, they were just a handful of Middle Eastern-looking men on their way to sunny California. So, yes, let's be exceedingly clear about the whole matter. Some 3,000 men, women and children are dead because the unassuming people on those airplanes did not look at them and see murderers. Or dangerous Arabs. Or fanatical Muslims. They saw a few guys in chinos.

(snip)

Here's what the flying public needs to know about airplanes and civil rights: Once your foot traverses the entranceway of a commercial airliner, you are no longer in a democracy in which everyone gets a vote and minority rights are affirmatively protected in furtherance of fuzzy, ever-shifting social policy. Ultimately, the responsibility for your personal safety and security rests on the shoulders of one person, the pilot in command. His primary job is to safely transport you and your belongings from one place to another. Period.

This is the doctrine of "captain's authority." It has a longstanding history and a statutory mandate, further strengthened after 9/11, which recognizes that flight crews are our last line of defense between the kernel of a terrorist plot and its lethal execution. The day we tell the captain of a commercial airliner that he cannot remove a problem passenger unless he divines beyond question what is in that passenger's head and heart is the day our commercial aviation system begins to crumble. When a passenger's conduct is so disturbing and disruptive that reasonable, ordinary people fear for their lives, the captain must have the discretionary authority to respond without having to consider equal protection or First Amendment standards about which even trained lawyers with the clarity of hindsight might strongly disagree. The pilot in command can't get it wrong. At 35,000 feet, when multiple events are rapidly unfolding in real time, there is no room for error.

"Oops.....Nancy Pelosi Stepped In It" Alert:

As the debate over Iraq intensifies, leading Democrat Silvestre Reyes is calling for the deployment of more U.S. troops.

The soft-spoken Texas Democrat was an early opponent of the Iraq war and voted against the October 2002 resolution authorizing President Bush to invade that country. That dovish record got prominently cited last week when Speaker designate Nancy Pelosi chose Reyes as the new head of the intelligence panel.

But in an interview with NEWSWEEK on Tuesday, Reyes pointedly distanced himself from many of his Democratic colleagues who have called for fixed timetables for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Coming on the eve of tomorrow’s recommendations from the bipartisan Baker-Hamilton commission, Reyes’s comments were immediately cited by some Iraq war analysts as fresh evidence that the intense debate over U.S. policy may be more fluid than many have expected.
