What's the advantage to a multiple page media story?

How many readers read beyond the title let alone the first few paragraphs?

The WP "security mom story" uses all of page one to lie to the reader about loss of support of this sector of voters. One must "turn the page and read half-way down for facts which repudiate the claim.
