Chris Matthews, Who Compared Conservatives to 'Nazis,' Rails Against Comparing Liberals to 'Nazis'

February 11th, 2014 4:34 PM

The liberal Chris Matthews on Monday night mocked Ben Carson for comparing the progressive movement to Nazis. However, Matthews isn't in a position to judge. He has repeatedly connected conservatives to Nazis. The cable host played a clip of the Fox News commentator at a fund-raising event for senatorial candidate Monica Wehby.

While talking about the progressive movement, Carson insisted, "There comes a time when people with values simply have to stand up. Think about Nazi Germany." Matthews sneered, "Haven't we all learned by now not to go there? No Nazi references." [See video below. MP3 audio here.] On November 26, 2012, guest Howard Fineman insisted that conservatives view African Americans and Hispanics as "extraterrestrial." Matthews derided, "The last guy to refer to the black auxiliary was Hitler."

On October 22, 2012, the anchor trashed conservatives, hissing, "Is it in society's interests for [a young woman's] boss to be able to be the birth control Nazi to decide who gets it and who doesn't?"

On November 7, 2012, Matthews chuckled as liberal comic Bill Maher compared Karl Rove to Adolf Hitler.

Haven't we learned not to "go there" when it comes to comparing our enemies to the Nazis? Matthews clearly hasn't.

A transcript of the February 10 segment is below:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Finally, Dr. Ben Carson, the FOX News commentator and Tea Party darling, is at it again, and this time, he's likening the progressive movement in this country to Nazi Germany. In a video that surfaced online today, Carson is seen campaigning for Monica Wehby, who is running in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate from Oregon. Here was his warning.

DR. BEN CARSON: There comes a time when people with values simply have to stand up. Think about Nazi Germany. Most of those people did not believe in what Hitler was doing.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yep.

CARSON: But did they speak up?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No.

CARSON: Did they stand up for what they believed? They did not.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Very few.

CARSON: And you saw what happened. And if you believe that the same thing can't happen again, you're very wrong.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yep.

CARSON: But we're not going to let it happen.

MATTHEWS: Haven't we all learned by now not to go there? No Nazi references.
