In the James Bond-007 movie, The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), Louisiana sheriff and full-blooded redneck J.W. Pepper reprises his role from the preceding Bond flick, Live and Let Die (1973).

An interesting thing happens to the sheriff's dialogue in The Man with the Golden Gun in a scene shot along the canals in Bangkok, Thailand. Pepper and his wife are on vacation there at the same time Bond is in town trying to find a missing “solex” device – a key to solving the global energy crisis via solar power. (This was during the '70s oil crisis.)

Pepper’s wife is admiring hand-carved wood elephants and the sheriff rebukes her with the comment: “We’re Democrats!” His remark implies that the symbol of the Republican Party is not going to find a place in his home. Nearly 30 years later, however, his comment has morphed to: “They’re Democrats!” This version implies that the sheriff is simply confused and thinks that the elephant is the symbol of the Democratic Party and that he – being a terribly backward and horribly ignorant man, a.k.a., a Neanderthal – is, of course, a Republican who, no surprise, doesn’t even know his own political party’s symbol and has rejected the elephant, not wanting the symbol of the Democrats in his home.

I know this from reading the closed captioning, which for years retained the original dialogue, i.e., “We’re Democrats.” However, when I saw the scene again this year, the closed captioning had been changed to the dialogue version. Next time, I’ll watch to see if the sheriff’s lips, pursed in the pronunciation of “we’re” -- and not “they’re” -- is visible.

What difference does it all make? Well, Democrats accuse everyone else of using Orwellian tactics yet even a movie about an English spy must receive political correctness cleansing.

Furthermore, Louisiana has one the most corrupt governments in the nation and has always been under the control of Democrats; this fact is hidden by mainstream media in current attempts to blame President Bush for the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, rather than state and local officials who lie to, steal from and cheat state residents out of federal funding. Louisiana also has one of the nation’s highest rates of people living in poverty, according to U.S. Census figures. So, it all just goes to show what Democrats do for you and how they go to extraordinary lengths to disguise the truth.

Finally, Democrats were the Confederacy and in the decades following the Civil War, Louisiana was at the forefront of rejecting civil rights for freed slaves.
