Daily Kos Week in Review: Grave Dancers' Union

This past week, while some Kossacks bade Margaret Thatcher a not-so-fond farewell, others argued that the Democratic party has moved so far to the right that it would suit, say, Ronald Reagan, and even Thatcher if she'd been an American.

As usual, each headline is preceded by the blogger's name or pseudonym.

babylonbros: The right mixes politics, sex, and death

Here in the US, [Thatcher] was less reviled than in England, mostly because the Conservatives love daydreaming about Reagan and her bumpin' wrinkled uglies on the corpses of the poor and hungry...

OllieGarkey: Thatcher, trailblazer of economic ruin

...Thatcher destroyed whole industries in places like Wales and Scotland just to be rid of the unions supported by those industries.

...The increased value of the pound under Margaret thatcher benefited those wealthy constituencies she represented, but destroyed her nation's industrial infrastructure.

Her policies were not the result of any economic miracle. They were not the triumph of right wing ideology over left wing ideology. They were based on what Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has called the greatest case of international larceny in history: the use of Scottish oil and Welsh mineral wealth, to enrich the wealthy parts of England. So too, the privatization of institutions paid for by the British Public with their tax money enriched the British ruling class...

Liberty Equality Fraternity and Trees: Democrats are...

...Although Democratic partisans love to blather about how much to the right the modern day Republican Party is from their professed conservative heroes of yore like Maggie and Ronnie, I'd much prefer to see a piece called "Why George McGovern Would be on the Left Fringe of Today's Neoliberal Democratic Party."  If Ronnie and Maggie could find home in the modern Democratic Party, then it's the Democratic Party's lurch rightward that's most manifest and most troubling.

MinistryOfTruth: ...the new Republicans

...Half way between Obama and a Republican is a Republican, and if I was pro-torture, anti-whistleblower who was determined to kill social security in the name of Entitlement reform I WOULD HAVE VOTED FOR THE ZOMBIE EYED GRANNY-STARVER...

...[T]he problem is the Democratic Party has become the new Republican party and the Republican party has devolved into a dying subculture trapped in the 1890s...

doctor o: The GOP's problems aren't merely cosmetic

...The Republican National Committee is now [meeting] in Hollywood looking for a makeover...Perhaps you are thinking of a few tummy tucks, butt lifts, breast enlargements, or maybe finding trainers and dieticians who can get rid of the flab and build up those six pack abs. And of course, you may be dreaming of new lips, hair and clothes. After all, it works for actors and actresses…..but, I have news for you -  for a political party, not so much.  In fact i[t] doesn’t work at all...

The great conservative Barry Goldwater once warned that when “preachers” take over the Republican party they will destroy it.” It turns out he was both right and prophetic. Preachers have taken over the Republican party, linked arms with global corporations and converted it from the party whose leaders ended slavery and established national parks to a force for a theocracy manipulated by corporations to enslave women and workers in general, bankrupt the middle class, steal from the taxpayers and rewrite the Constitution. All in the name of liberty, of course...
