Newt Gingrich: Chris Matthews 'Is Slightly Wacked'

May 31st, 2012 10:01 AM

As NewsBusters previously reported, Newt Gingrich last week told MSNBC's Chris Matthews, "You have a more ruthless approach to politics than I do."

Discussing this Hardball appearance on Morning Joe Thursday, Gingrich said of Matthews, "Part of the reason that Chris keeps that show is that he’s slightly wacked" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

After a clip was played of Gingrich's recent appearance on Hardball, host Joe Scarborough asked, "So what were you thinking as Chris Matthews came at you 35 miles an hour with all of these questions about reptiles when you were going on there to talk politics?”

The former Speaker responded:

NEWT GINGRICH: You know, part of the reason that Chris keeps that show is that he’s slightly wacked, and you never quite know where you’re going. Just watch the way he opens the show. I mean, you know, “it’s Hardball,” and he’s off and running. So, my experience being with Chris has been that if you just relax and stay a half step ahead of him, you can survive the performance, and, you know, get back another day.

Actuallly, before the show, we went into his office and were looking at great pictures he’s taken in Africa over the years. He first went there, I think, as a Peace Corps volunteer. So he has a really genuine interest in animals, although I would not have identified him - as much as I’m a critic - I would not have identified him as a black mamba.

I'm not sure Matthews is "slightly wacked," but having followed him since his days with the San Francisco Examiner, I believe him to be a devout liberal that can no longer hide his biases.

Fortunately for him, his current home of MSNBC wants all of its employees to be as biased as possible which at this stage in his career makes it a perfect fit.
