For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Powell endorses Obama.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell crossed party lines this morning to endorse Sen. Barack Obama for president, the most prominent GOP defection yet of the 2008 campaign.

First off, is this really that surprising? Powell has been bashing the Bush administration for years, and has by no means been someone Republicans could count on for support.

Secondly, how important is this endorsement? Is Powell at this point in time a powerful enough figure to sway Republicans, Independents, or undecideds into Obama's camp? Or, despite how much coverage this will get from a fawning media for the next 72 hours, will this not be the game-changer they most certainly will claim it to be?
