May 13, 2008 - 20:52 ET by eaglescout1998As bad as John McCain may be, he cannot be worse than "Slick Hilly" or "Mr. Hope & Change."
I have heard many a conservative say they will stay home on election day because of their disdain for McCain. That's their right, of course. But I cannot help but think of the many conservatives who, by staying home in 1976, handed the keys to the White House to the "Peanut Farmer."
How many Republicans does this guy actually represent?
May 13, 2008 - 21:54 ET by alecjHow in the heck did McCain end up our nominee-- even if he wins he will do damage to the country that will be incredibly difficult to repair if not impossible. You give him a huge majority of Dems in Congress and he will destroy our economy with this eco-fanatism which will then be blamed on a Republican President making 2012 even worse. We are in a situation that is so depressing to true conservatives. What hope do we have to not completely lose the country to the left for the rest of this generation. Why do great societies always destroy themselves throughout history and are we watching it happen at this very moment. 4 Years of super majorities of Dems in Congress and an Obama (or even McCain) could break this countries back beyond repair and leave us living out the rest of our existence as another weak, hollow, and government controlled shadow of the America that was great. Not even another Reagan could undo that damage. Once an entire generation of wards of the state are created by the upcoming revolution of entitlements and wealth redistribution, the Democratic party will have bought off enough votes control our lives in anyway they see fit. Meanwhile gutting our ability to defend the country eventually leading us into a completely defensive posture in the war on terrorism and most likely a string of attacks on America that will change the country forever.....Some one give me a reason to believe we arent a few votes this fall from becoming another european psuedo-socialist mess with no ablility to control its own destiny on the world stage. Not to mention the loss of economic prowess forever. Im really looking for a reason for hope.....help me-

"How in the heck did McCain
May 14, 2008 - 02:49 ET by eaglescout1998"How in the heck did McCain end up our nominee?"
My theory: McCain had support from independents and Democrats in states with open primary systems. I really think they should do away with open primaries in all 50 states. How is it fair for a Democrat to muck up our nomination process (or for us to muck up theirs, for that matter)?
The Primary Process is the ultimate disenfranchiser.....
May 14, 2008 - 04:11 ET by alecjIve heard the whines of disenfranchisement from Democrats every election since 2000 when it became part of their crusted, oddly snortable, ditto machine worn playbook. The truth is, the primary process rarely even makes it to places as important to the general election as Pennslyvania or Ohio without already being decided. How can the Republican Nominee be selected by a hand full of random states, many of which are in no way demographically similar to the rest of the country.
The fair solution is.....1 Super Tuesday--- all 50 states--- 6 months before the general. Just like the actual selection of a President-- each party should select its nominee with all states making their choice the same day. Not allowing demographic anomalies or specific issue voters from a small state to overly prop up or kill a candidate before 95% of us get to vote. Thats ridiculous and would be considered a travesty if carried over to the general election.
Sorry guys, Iowa and New Hampshire chose-- we figure thats a pretty good sample on what the rest of you want--- game over.
Where are all the "all votes must count!" loud mouths during this mess.
Is this idea completely insane or is it SO insane it makes at least some sense---
I don't know whether or not
May 13, 2008 - 22:04 ET by fitzfongI don't know whether or not he will be worse than those two, but he will probably be just as bad. The Democrats are going to increase their majorities in both Houses of Congress and they will be "working with" a RINO President who would rather take orders from them than stand up to them. And four years from now, the Republican Party will get the blame for the failures of the Democrat Congress...all because John McCain neutered himself. May as well have Obama.

Conservative Commentators need to stress the financial costs
May 13, 2008 - 22:04 ET by PopularTechConservative commentators need to stress the financial costs of any global warming regulation - whether it be cap and trade or carbon taxes. People need to know that if this regulation goes through their energy costs are going to skyrocket. They also need to make clear the debate has nothing to do with pollution. These two points are why most of the fence sitters are not involved - they are confused and think any of this has to do with pollution regulation or do not realize it will cost them ALOT of money. They need to know that air pollution is already regulated and this regulation will NOT increase air quality or reduce REAL pollution.

"CO2 for different people has different attractions. After all, what is it? - it’s not a pollutant, it’s a product of every living creature’s breathing, it’s the product of all plant respiration, it is essential for plant life and photosynthesis, it’s a product of all industrial burning, it’s a product of driving – I mean, if you ever wanted a leverage point to control everything from exhalation to driving, this would be a dream. So it has a kind of fundamental attractiveness to bureaucratic mentality."

May 14, 2008 - 18:43 ET by fitzfongYeah, bigtimer. I remember falling into the trap of voting for that creep in the Recall Election. I so desperately wanted to get rid of Gray Davis, and I figured the only way to get Davis recalled and to prevent Cruz Bustamante from replacing him would be to vote for Schwarzenegger. He made all the right noises at the time. I had arguments with my father who wouldn't vote for Schwarzenegger under any circumstances (it's all about the abortion issue with him). He was going to vote for the Recall and for Tom McClintock...a State Senator with a great fiscally conservative mind (McClintock is now termed out but running for Congress this year). In retrospect, I wish I had done the same...not that it would have mattered. Of course, I'm having the same arguments with my dad now. He's all for McCain...but I'm right this time. I detest Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's a lazy, arrogant, phony sack of crap who's been neutered by the goons in the Public Employee Unions. The fact that his biggest allies are criminals: Villaraigiosa, lame duck Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and lame duck State Senator Don Perata tells you all you need to know about that steaming pile. At this point, I'd sooner see Barbara Boxer get re-elected in 2010 than to see the Windbaginator knock her off her ill-gotten perch.

I will never vote for a
May 13, 2008 - 21:59 ET by USA4freedomI will never vote for a Democrat, but.. I will not vote for Mc Cain.
Well, here is my logic:
I know that there are some holes in it but I believe we have to look for the future. Mc Cain shows every day that he does not worry about our votes. He believes in: “where else can they go” theory. So he concentrates on the left and middle.
I have a different idea, if Mc Cain gets in, he is the head of the party, he will want to push his agenda, the Republicans in the House and Senate will be forced to go along, (look at the last immigration bill) so any left leaning bills will never be stopped. Who is there to do it? The Republicans? They will follow Mc Cain’s lead. The Democrats? Never.
If we are the party out of power we will fight to stop legislation put up by Obama or Billary.
The problem with this is a few things, one the war. That is one spot that Mc Cain is strong on. The other is judges, that is yet to be seen. He said that he did not like Roberts as a choice.
One important point, if we cannot filibuster then all is lost. Other then those few things I don’t see much difference.
There are dark times ahead. Sad, hard times, but somehow we have to get to the other end.

Okay, so let's assume you're right, and it's just a wee bit slower. Mightn't that wee bit impact your taxes? Mightn't that wee bit impact SCOTUS, which, BTW, could impact things for decades? Mightn't that wee bit impact the military? And, mightn't that wee bit impact the war on terrorism?
Hmmm. Seems to me that wee bit might be a wee bit better?
But that's just me. ns
By a wee bit... I agree,

I agree, but only by a wee bit!
Let me try from another direction. If a McCain presidency is a complete disaster, what will it do to the GOP?

May 13, 2008 - 22:14 ET by Noel SheppardCT,
Well, if Herbert Hoover was alive, how might HE answer that question?
Let's examine this, shall we?
In 2006, after 26 years of the nation moving to the right, and 14 years of Republican control of Congress, the nation made a HUGE left turn giving both legislative chambers back to the Democrats -- VERY LIBERAL Democrats, mind you!
Now, if a VERY LIBERAL Democrat wins the White House in 2008, might that mean the 2006 shift was the beginning of a LONG national move leftward?
Maybe? Possibly? Isn't that what history has shown us?
Now, by comparison, if a Republican -- albeit a moderate Republican -- wins the White House in 2008, might this slow the tide of socialism -- much like what FDR ushered in almost 76 years ago! -- enough to give the right a shot in 2010 and 2012?
Let's understand that these trends have a tendency to be long-lasting once they get going. HOWEVER, much as what happened when Clinton won in '92, one election doth not a trend make, as two years later, the Pubs took over both chambers of Congress thereby extending the conservative revolution that began in 1980!!!
However TWO CONSECUTIVE "realigning" elections can be irreversible.
I'm just saying!!! :-) ns
P.S. Are we having fun yet?

"P.S. Are we having fun yet?" No!
I'm still trying to figure out what you wrote so bear with me. Do you agree that the GOP has been leaning more to the left in recent years? If you do, do you think a McCain presidency would set a tone for what the GOP will look like in the future? And finally, do you see this as a positive?
Whoops, almost forgot.... why do you call McCain a "moderate"?

Do you agree that the GOP has been leaning more to the left in recent years?
Sadly, yes.
If you do, do you think a McCain presidency would set a tone for what the GOP will look like in the future?
Hopefully not.
And finally, do you see this as a positive?
Tough to tell at the moment.
As I mentioned to Chris I believe, McCain right now is likely making a wise political maneuver. The two Dem candidates are fighting for the left, and, therefore, have abandoned the middle. The majority of voters right now are in that middle. So, since Hillary and Obama have completely ignored this segment, McCain has wisely gone for it.
Does this help us conservatives at this moment? No. But, it prevents two consecutive elections of liberal victories. That DOES help us, for historically, two consecutive such elections represent a realignment that could last for decades.
Once again, just ask Herbert Hoover!
You have to understand that because of all the history I've studied, I see things from a macro level. If after taking back the Congress in 2006 the Dems take the White House in 2008 while expanding majorities in both chambers, this will signal the end of the conservative revolution Reagan began, and we could have DECADES of liberal Democrat dominance. DECADES!!!
This is what history has shown us -- OVER AND OVER AGAIN!
The folks on the right that are hoping a Dem victory in 2008 will mobilize conservatives in 2010 are FIGHTING against multiple historical precedents concerning this very issue.
I'm sorry, but as someone nearing retirement with one kid in college and another about to be, I'm not willing to make such a bet.
Please understand that I'm also someone that bets WITH the odds, and whilst at Vegas or Tahoe, understands such things. As such, the odds of us LOSING the White House in 2008 and taking back Congress in 2010 and the White House in 2012 are VERY long. VERY.
By contrast, history shows that if we win the White House this year -- even with a moderate candidate -- we are MUCH MORE LIKELY to win back the Congress in 2010, and hold the White House in 2012.
Sorry, but that's what history shows. ns
History... History is so

History is so 'in the past'. <---My attempt at humor. Sorry, I just can't make the same connection you are regarding past history. This is something that is a modern day FUBAR.
You wrote : "McCain right now is likely making a wise political maneuver."
If by going AGW is a wise political maneuver, then why is he doing it with so much conviction and passion? He sure sounds as if he is sold on the idea and wants us to be sold on it too. Bottom line for me... I DO NOT TRUST HIM.

May 13, 2008 - 22:55 ET by danboThough I won't. I can see the reason for sitting out the election. If we elect a non conservative republican and he makes a lot of bad decissions. In 2012 people will go the other way. And we'll see a democRAT.
If we let them elect an Obama. I suspect people will move to a conservative congress and again after Obama messes everything up...
We're in this because of Clinton/Gore and do nothing republicans. Clinton/Gore gave power to the people pushing this bull. And I voted for Bush to throw the rascals out. And he didn't clean house. It's my biggest disappointment in W.
It's a tough choice. Vote for a republican I disagree with on so much. Or not vote and face even worse.

May 13, 2008 - 19:53 ET by dboI'm not an American citizen but if you want my unsolicited advice I would hold my nose and vote for McCain. Look at Obama on health care or Iraq. Ridiculously scary. Trust me, as a Canadian you don't want to go down that universal health care road. Even though McCain is an idiot on AGW, at least he's on record for not signing any binding international agreements that don't include China or India whereas Obama has said he might offer a cabinet post to Al "the jolly green giant" Gore. I'm a fiscal consevative too. A 3 out of ten is 3x better than a 1 out of ten.
