Leonardo DiCaprio Introduces ‘The 11th Hour,' AKA ‘An Inconvenient Truth, Part II’

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

Given the dismal failure of Al Gore’s Live Earth concerts, now seems hardly the time to be releasing “An Inconvenient Truth, Part II.”

Yet, on August 17, Leonardo DiCaprio’s documentary about how man is destroying the planet, “The 11th Hour,” premieres to a society that seems to be losing interest in global warming alarmism.

How delicious.

The seemingly over-worked premise is described thusly (trailer available here, h/t NBer Sick-n-Tired):

”The 11th Hour” is the last moment when change is possible. The film explores how we’ve arrived at this moment — how we live, how we impact the earth’s ecosystems, and what we can do to change our course. Featuring ongoing dialogues of experts from all over the world, including former Soviet Prime Minister Mikhail Gorbachev, renowned scientist Stephen Hawking, former head of the CIA R. James Woolsey and sustainable design experts William McDonough and Bruce Mau in addition to over 50 leading scientists, thinkers and leaders who discuss the most important issues that face our planet and people.

Any bets as to how quickly this ends up out of the theatres and on DVD?

Am I The Only One Who Noticed?

Last week, I published a post, Sean Hannity to Expose Hypocrisy of Actor Leo DiCaprio, in which I wrote I would watch Sean Hannity’s interview of the co-directors of Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest film venture, 11th Hour, when it aired on Fox News’ Hannity’s America program Sunday evening. That didn’t happen, but I did get a chance to watch the clip on the program’s web site yesterday morning, and what I saw surprised me.

Nothing about the subject matter itself surprised me — Hannity grilled the liberals, and they argued right back, albeit in a civil tone. It was the fact that Hannity introduced the co-directors of the film without providing more detail about their backgrounds.Hannity introduced Leila Conners Peterson and Nadia Conners as sisters when, in reality, they are sisters-in-law. No big deal. What he left out — and maybe he didn’t know — was the fact that Nadia Conners is someone whose maiden name, Nadia Comenici, is familiar to almost anyone over the age of 30.

That’s right! She’s the same person who won a total of nine Olympic medals — including five gold — during the 1976 Games in Montreal and the 1980 Games in Moscow as a member of the Romanian gymnastic team. Most memorably, she was the first gymnast in history to be awarded a perfect “10″ in an Olympic event.

So how did she end up involved in the global warming movie business?

Last time I checked, she was living with her husband Bart Conners — also an Olympic gold medalist — in Norman, Okla. Together, they run a gymnastics academy in Bart’s adopted hometown where he had starred on the University of Oklahoma gymnastics team some three decades ago. Plus, a look at her Wikipedia pages reveals nothing one might mistake for credentials or expertise in climatology, meteorology or any of the sciences.

Hopefully, Hannity and his cohorts at Fox News will follow up with her to find out where her expertise lies and how she went from doing balance beam and floor routines to sounding the false alarm about global warming. If or when they do, I will post an update at my blog, Bob McCarty Writes™.

I'm curious to know if the so

I'm curious to know if the so-called "thinkers" includes Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio.   And Gorbachev?!  Looking at the pathetic environmental record of the Soviet Union and Russia, featuring Gorbachev is like having bin Laden explain the significance of the Bar Mitzvah.

I suspect that li'l' Leo will be rather disappointed.

Hey, the YouTube footage I want is from a nearby camera being held by a guy focused close-up on her shirt & face (ok, mostly on her shirt...) when the dude on stage told 'em all to "jump up and down to end global warming!!" Finally, a global warming solution that works for me, at least in Cameron's case!

There is one loss with Gorby.

There is one loss with Gorby. It's my understanding that there was no global warming during the Soviet power in Russia.

It wa only after the communist were thrown out of power. And a large number of weather stations were closed due to cost. That warming trends were reported in Russia.

With all due respect to the mind of Stephen Hawking, the man NEVER took his intelligence or work seriously until his physical abilities were taken from him.  Now he sits and over thinks, over analyzes his scientific and mathamatical theories ... and YES, even Hawking is challenged aggressively by those in his own field on his theories ... But the difference is (between that, and how  challenges on GW theories are debated) is that THERE IS DEBATE in Hawking's scientific field, and the opposing side and their theories and studies are taken seriously ... In GW one side has shut down completely the debate to the other side and declared "consensus" (AND is making money from doing such) ... When in fact there are just as many scientists on the other side of GW that disagree with much of the GW Cultists' consensus .

"Leonardo DiCaprio’s d

"Leonardo DiCaprio’s documentary about how man is destroying the planet,..."

And of course, Leo has also included himself among the "eco-culprits" in the film, right?  I am sure Leo will confess to the movie-goers how he himself persistently degraded the environment and contributed to global warming with all of those vital fossil fuel-depleting private jet flights to see Heff and the honeys at the playboy mansion. Not to mention his very own environmentally-incorrect many-thousand square foot carbon spewing mansion with it's heated swimming pool, full basketball court, and fleet of sports cars. I am sure Leo won't forget to remind us that he is just as guilty of contributing to GW as those he points his finger at.  Oh, wait--- that's right, he pays his carbon offsets. My bad.

Well, at least the meager proceeds from this (assuming he at least breaks even) should provide Leo with enough seed money to crank up his next project:

They've been saying we're "destroying the planet" for the last four decades, yet we're still here, spinning through space.  I hope this movie flops and they all lose their shirts on it.

Matt, that was my thought als

Matt, that was my thought also.  The oceans were destroyed several years ago: after all, Oceanographer Ted Danson warned us that the oceans would be dead "in ten years", and that was well over ten years ago that he gave this warning.  Paul Erlich warned in his 1968 book, The Population Bomb, that hundreds of millions of people would starve to death due to overpopulation.  Bush must have had control of the media in the 1970s and 1980s, because I never heard or read anything about mass starvation.  Man (particularly the United States) was going to cause a global ice age in the late 70s.  The Amazon was supposed to be a desert by now.  The folks warning us of doom and gloom have been notoriously wrong for the longest time.  Even if these prophecies had come true, the earth would still be here.  But, if anyone does want to destroy the planet, here are the top 10 ways to go about doing so.

I would listen to any of them if they can explain how climate change occurred during previous eras...when MAN was incapable of producing greenhouse gases. After they explain that, then they have to convince me that these same forces are not in action now and why.

trashingmyconstitutional,

Marxist/Leninist ideology is not forward thinking, nor is it progressive. It is regressive thinking. It is one of the most anti-individual and anti-freedom forms of government yet devised by man.

Socialism is a total, abject, colossal and undeniable failure, as it completely dehumanizes and demoralizes those unfortunate to have to live under it.

Had you attended anything other than a government school, you would know this.

I guess you America and freedom-hating Marxist myrmidons will have to find some other way to destroy our free-enterprise system and turn us all into un-thinking socialist slaves of the government, as are you and your ilk. After all, you tried the war on poverty to shame us into surrendering our money, as well as our rights, and that failed. The climate change movement is fading, as well.

Time to find a new vehicle to take us all to utopian bliss.

Up yours.

Benny Peiser, an expert in ap

Benny Peiser, an expert in apocalyptic movements and neocatastrophism at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK, (has) criticized Hawking for increasingly unfounded and erratic doomsday prophesies.

Peiser told SPACE.com he thought Hawking's words constituted "regrettable hype."

"Stephen Hawking's predictions of terrestrial doom have become increasingly wide-ranging and unreasonable in recent years," Peiser writes. "They also manifest a certain arbitrariness in his choice of end-time scenarios."

A year ago, Hawking warned that global warming would make Earth as deadly a place as Venus, also saying humanity might not survive the next 1,000 years. Peiser called Hawking's latest prediction "both fatalistic and highly unlikely. It also violates scientific risk assessments commonly used for hazard estimation."

Peiser said apocalyptics typically exaggerate possible future dangers while ignoring or underestimating the probability of finding a social, technological or medical remedy for any given predicament.

"The risks of genetic engineering or bioterrorism are genuine," Peiser says. "But like all the other major hazards, they need to be evaluated and weighed up against our increasing capabilities to control and influence life, nature and society."

Peiser draws on history for examples of our steadfastness as a species. "For more than 5 million years, hominids and human beings have survived recurring onslaughts of ice ages, global catastrophes due to asteroidal and cometary impacts as well as global plague epidemics," he points out.

"Technological and societal evolution has now reached a level of complexity that renders the probability of human survival for the next 1,000 years drastically higher than at any previous stage of our long history."
