Headline: Majority Favor Changing Immigration Laws, Poll Says
What do I have to say to that? BULLSHIT. There have been plenty of polls out already that show that americans are not fond of illegal immigration, and don't want amnesty.
The only thing that makes any sense is that the NYT push polled this thing. Notice how you don't see a link to the results? Notice how no results = not knowing how they worded the questions?
This is typical NYT propaganda.

May 25, 2007 - 14:06 ET by tumblerI got a kick out of Cool Ann's ideas about this. She says: "We all dislike rapists. But should we offer all the rapists amnesty ?
Then I saw Dick Morris's thoughts this morning in NewsMax. He thinks we would benefit by passing this bill. I mean the GOP would, over the long haul. I think I agree with Morris /

It is a push poll, half and half.
May 25, 2007 - 13:40 ET by RJYou're right, half and half. Rush talked about it earlier and read some of the questions, leaving no doubt that it's a push poll.
The NYT article carefully avoids giving readers the poll questions. Among other things, it misdirects by mixing "illegal" and "legal" immigrants in it's quotes, assessments and conclusions.

May 25, 2007 - 14:22 ET by Conservative VoiceCount me as one of these Americans who want to change our immigration laws, just not the way the NYT claimed.
I want to help the hard working immigrant, this is good for
America...so make it easier to be a citizen ( I have three main
requirements...speak English, don't have a criminal record, and be
American (no hyphen please) ).
As far as having a guest worker program...I'm OK with it under the following conditions. The person is a guest, and thereby should be treated as such. Any child born to a guest is also a guest. No welfare benefits for guests. No free education, or in state tuition for guests. No free hospital treatment. Nor any benefit a citizen gets should they also get. In return they get a fair wage for their work, and they can stay as long as they can pay the bills and stay out of trouble.
As far as satisfying any labor shortages...lets get rid of minimum wages, change our child labor laws (which ironically don't apply to Hollywood), and employ our inmates. That is lets let capitalism do what it does best...work.

May 25, 2007 - 14:32 ET by tumblerStopping after your 2nd paragraph, my comments:
( I have three main
requirements...speak English, don't have a criminal record, and be
American (no hyphen please) ).
Reply: Is this a free country ? Well, do NOT dictate what another person can say; English OR any other language. It's NOYB -- As for criminal records; it's a non-starter. We ought to deport any felon period; and not all come here with rap sheets. Being American ? WHO makes that distinction, You ? Keep your nose out of other peoples' faces. They'll need no directions from you to be Americans. It's NOT a defect, Sir; to say "I'm a Mexican-American."
It strikes me you're in favor of limited totalitarian government. Please correct me ?

May 25, 2007 - 15:05 ET by Conservative VoiceImmigration Laws:
English only...because tumbler, this is the BEST way to not only help the immigrant succeed here, but it is the BEST way for us to communicate and thereby work together and live together. Ever heard of the story of Babel?
If you think I am say we should outlaw other languages to be spoken, you are wrong. I am saying they must know and speak English to earn citizenship.
Felon requirement...glad to see you agree. As far as punishments go...they shouldn't get their citizenship one...deporting, jail, hanging ... that is off topic...if you wish to talk about that we can. I am talking specifically about getting your citizenship. and please tumbler, do not insult me with "not all come here with a rap sheet" because I didn't make that claim. I am speaking of how to earn citizenship, not about illegals...but at least you have admitted that some illegals have a rap sheet.
Be American, no hyphen please. Meaning tumbler, come here as wanting to be an American...not something and American as an after thought, an American period. I hate race questions, because it breeds racism. Want to be an American, then be only American, get rid of your citizenship of your birth country, be loyal to America only and melt into it. I am not saying you can't bring over some of your culture...I am saying stop seeing yourself as a separate type of American, stop seeing yourself as a citizen of a different country. Start seeing yourself as a citizen who would join the military if need be and go to war with your original country. Be an American, means unite with Americans in making America great. We should be a melting pot, not a tossed salad.
I do not know what you mean by limited totalitarian government...thats contradictory. Either government is totalitarian or it isn't. Please clarify.

Because when I have a garage sale (like I did last weekend) I shouldn't have to have a spanish-speaking interpreter to ensure that my customers aren't trying to take me for a ride--in fact many people left when they realized someone that could speak spanish was helping me...I can't imagine what it would be like to own a business here in this town. It's called being integrated. When I was overseas I tried very hard to learn the languages so I could speak to people in their national or majority language. I was very self conscious of my inability to not be able to speak fluently and I felt like I was a nusiance and a bad guest. Learning the language goes a long way for people to earn the trust and respect of their host nation. When in Rome...
Why NOT learn to speak english? The whole idea of citizenship is to leave behind your prior national identity for a new one. They're still ethnic Mexicans (or whatever nationality they are...not all of them concerned are Mexicans or latino based ethnicities). They can still be individuals even if they have to learn English.
**Edit** Just learned this! Mexico requires knowledge of Spanish to gain citizenship!: From http://www.bajainsider.com/baja-life/immigration/mexican-citizenship.htm
Along with this first rule a second one is composed of 3 conditions that one must respect: A) Speak Spanish; B) Have knowledge of the history of Mexico; C) Live with Mexican.
The second rule condition of speaking Spanish does not imply that one who applies to become a Mexican citizen has to write or read. A by-law of the law of nationality does say that the applicant can be subject to an exam and that the exam must be from a certain institute but this been said the law is specific “speak Spanish” and been of public order the words of the legislator are to be interpreted in a restricted manner thus one who is asked to write an exam can and must decline. Furthermore if one is asked to pass a verbal exam one can and must require that the exam is the one approved by the institution which is named in the by-law. The second condition is that regarding the history of Mexico. It is only proper that one who desires to become a citizen of a country that one has some knowledge of the history on how the country became what it is today, this been said this does not mean that one has to have a full knowledge of the history, a basic knowledge is sufficient and this does not means that one has to learn the Mexican national anthem. Regarding the last condition which is to live with Mexicans one lives in a general way if one is residing in Mexico.

May 25, 2007 - 14:08 ET by misterbillhey - opinions---If a paragraph in an article about the "compromise" started out like this:
"Anti-illegal immigrants immediately labeled it "amnesty" since it contains a pathway for citizenship for some of the 12 million illegal immigrants here."
It continues on (parentheses his):
"(These groups choose to ignore ....$5000 fines and the arduous path for theses folks to to gain citizenship.)"
What does that tell you about the editor who wrote this???
