My wife spent time at a large Flea Market in our area today, but made no mention of her trip until we sat down to eat a short time ago. She told me about meeting a very nice young man who was selling household items and old junk at the market. He recently got home after a stay in our local Veterans Hospital where they had to replace his whole knee and operate on the lower part of his thigh. My wifes memory is worse than mine but she thinks he lost his knee due to an IED while on patrol.
I'm writing this entry because my wife told me that it seems a shame that this brave young man has to sell his personal belongings to make sure his wife and 18 month old son are taken care of. I agree!
It will be a challenge finding this young man, but I will do everything possible to find out who he is. I'm leading up to asking everyone here at NB to see if they will be willing to help. As mentioned, I have no idea who he is or if his story is legit, but if I can find him and verify his story I want to help this patriot in any way I can. I know we have alot of good people here so I'm hoping we as a loosely knit group can come together to make a difference for one brave soldier. What do you say folks?

If you eventually track this man down and this is legit, I will contribute too, can't a lot, but like misterb says if we all pull together, it will add up.
Thank you and your fine wife, this is the first I heard of this.
Let us know as I know you will.

May 19, 2007 - 22:53 ET by misterbillCT check it out---if it's legit--I will send him a modest donation. Also, if it's legit, I wish I could afford to send him a large donation, but if, say 100 NBers sent him $10-$20 bucks--it's not much but it may allow him to keep his stuff and have a little dignity.

Brave soldier update
May 21, 2007 - 18:59 ET by Clear thinkerWill be getting a call back no later than Wednesday if there is a possibility of finding him through our local VA Hospital. I also have other people working on it from different angles. I do however feel very confidant that we can pull this off. Everyone that I have contacted is on board and helping, and now want to find him as badly as I do.
I will wait until Wed to update again.

Something we do around here
May 22, 2007 - 06:55 ET by WhichWingSomething we do around here when people could use a helping hand is have a charity dinner (fund-raiser I guess). Usually nothing special, spaghetti dinner or ham dinner, or something like that. Most restaurants are glad to help because it benefits them as well. I realize I live in a much smaller community than you probably do, and that might make it harder to pull off, or it might help you to raise more money. They typically auction stuff off that has been donated. One soldier came home last summer with many severe injuries, including the loss of one of his legs. In a town of less than 2,000 people, they organized a dinner and raised just over $13,000. Of course his injuries were very serious, so maybe in this situation you could set it up to benefit a few local soldiers. I would recommend approaching smaller restaurants first, and if you have no luck there, then possibly some of the larger franchises.

Besides the help of some individuals, I now have the local chapter of the "Disabled American Veterans" and the local chapter of the "VFW" helping in the search for this soldier.
I will post any and all new info as it comes in. Say a few prayers and keep those fingers crossed.

Wounded soldier update.
June 3, 2007 - 16:27 ET by Clear thinkerThe young soldier we have been trying to locate is apparantly a fraud. There were some fairly well connected people searching for this young man and everyone has come up dry. Evidently he was just a civilian who was trying to get people to feel sorry for him and buy his stuff.
I would like to thank everyone that had indicated they wanted to help.
If you have an active VFW in your area and would like to help a soldier in need, just give them a shout. The VFW always knows of some brave patriot that could use a helping hand.
God Bless our Soldiers!
