The Conservative Movement

If you could change one policy, what would you change?
Some examples:
1. School choice: bring market forces to education and erode the monopoly and poor service our government has over education.
2. A flat tax / national sales tax
3. Controling illegal immigration
4. Having taxes collected in October (since elections are in November)

My vote would be school choice.

I would overhaul the tax system. I wrote to Pete Domenici about overhauling the tax system (I have favored the flat tax). He responded (just got the letter today as a matter of fact) and told me he thought the flat tax and national sales tax were regressive. He said he favors the Unlimited Savings Account Tax Act (it has already been introduced, but not debated or voted on). I looked it up, it looks like it is better than what we have, but it appears that the IRS will still have to be as big as it already is to keep everything straight. I have to do more research on it, but at first appearance to me it doesn't look as promising as the Armey Flat Tax.

I'll try to read up on it to form a better opinion on it.

But I think I would do taxes first out of everything on your list, then school choice, then immigration. Rather than collecting taxes in October, I'd go for term limits on all elected officials and repeal the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Bill.

Isn't it interesting that God

Isn't it interesting that God requires 10%, yet government asserts it needs 50%?

A "regressive" tax has become a dirty word.  To me a flat tax it the most fair, and the closer to 0 the better.

The other thing I would change as far as taxes go is remove the withholding laws.  When people write the check, they are more aware what they pay.

Repeal the campaign laws is also a good idea, as its against the constitution.  Rather a better law is to have a full disclosure law.  That is you can give any amount, but it has to be public knowledge.

I use to be for term limits, but I am no longer for it, as we are responsible for their term limit.  We shouldn't be writing laws that limit the people...we should appeal the limit on how many terms a President can serve.  Rather the official should discluse publically all funds used...including free stamps they get.  I would get rid of matching funds too.

I put school first over taxes, though it was close for me, because our current school system is producing socialists robots.  Getting control back from the education department is key for conservatives, and is key for making our country competitive in the world market.  We rank 25th yet outspend most countries on per pupil spending.

CV,

As someone with no children, I don't mind paying taxes for education.  But I do object to paying taxes for such an idiotic educational system.

Why should I pay to have the libs indoctrinate children, the next generation of taxpayers, if you will, to believe in Global Warming, hating all things conservative, and generally believing that the government will provide all answers?

I work hard, and I feel I should be represented.

But these liberals and their co-opting of the American ethic of work hard, get ahead, is driving me insane.

Work hard, and steal from your neighbors....the liberal creed.

Disgusting.

I am all for separation of sc

I am all for separation of school and state, because Global Warming and Environmentalism is a religion, Socialism is a form of morality, Abortion is OK, OK to have sex before marriage, encouraging living together before marriage, Homosexuality is normal...This is religion, yet we can't mention the 10 commandments, can't say the pledge, can't tell people to work.

Market forces in education would do much to tear away the left's power and influence.

The reason I would support

The reason I would support term limits is that people get too complacent and will vote for an incumbent without thinking unless the incumbent has eaten their child. There are several congresspeople that have been repeatedly re-elected even after illegal, unethical, and otherwise questionable behaviors...people seem to think well, they're already in office and they haven't screwed up too much, so I suppose I'll just vote for him again.) I also think there are large blocks of voters that vote as if it were a high school popularity contest. And therefore they vote without researching the candidates or the issues. They vote on looks, name recognition, and vain promises.

I think your removal of "withholding" of taxes is a great idea, but it is doomed to fail because too many people in the U.S. don't want to shoulder the responsibility that should be already be theirs. We also need to get rid of the redistribution of wealth. No one should get more back than they paid and absolutely no one should get anything if they haven't paid any taxes (except for maybe disabled people that can't work...but even then if the government would take less money from us, then there would be more money for us to help our family, friends, and neighbors without government bureaucracy and wastefulness).

At the same time, I am oppose

At the same time, I am opposed to term limits.  If you don't like your politicians, don't weasel out of what you have to do and come up with a law to force them out.  VOTE them out!

The city council/mayor of San Antonio are limited to two two year terms.  IMHO, that actually serves to hamper the city government there.

botg, I agree that the Supreme Court is important, but I think education is more, because it does more to change the People.  Because the pool of conservatives to draw from to put on the bench will grow.

And the court decides many things that do not affect the general life of an individual...education does.

Ah, would ye rather i remove ye heart or ye lungs?  I picked the court because it effects the schools, immigration, etc.  How many states have passed laws only for them to be shot down by court challenges.   It's not even just the ones that get that far as some aren't pursued knowing the outcome.

It won't matter how taxes are collected if we allow illegals to continue to pour into our country and tax (pun intended) our system.

I want all illegals to go home in an orderly fashion and return the same way LEGALLY! Tumbler can go with them.

The liberal MSM has become an enemy of the USA.

Vouchers

There is one single way to change our country for the better. That way is not just school choice, but national vouchers.

Competing schools, including religious, independent, and home schools are the only long term way to reverse the political and social indoctrination our children receive today.

It dumps the stranglehold the teacher's unions have on our education system.

It improves the inner city schools.

All that, in turn, will change our country.

Not much time this morning to

Not much time this morning to expound on my ideas, but perhaps I will later...

1) The "flat tax"...in fact, put it in the Constitution, if possible, to make it much harder for politicians to tinker with (or to raise!).

2) Balanced Budget Amendment, to force all Legislators of both parties to do the right thing.

3) Gradual privatization of Social Security.

4) Expansion of free trade while securing the northern AND southern borders (and yes, this can be done!).

5) I can go on and on about education...but for the sake of brevity, I like school vouchers.  For starters.  A total revolution in the world of education is desperately needed for our citizens to be afforded the chance to reach their potential!!!

...and that's the short list!

How do you propose to replace the income tax?  By attacking the core of the economy (otherwise known to economists as "C")?

And what spending do you propose to eliminate, other than the obvious (in your case, the obvious would include the complete dissolution of the Defense Department)?
