Today the USA Today published
April 11, 2007 - 10:22 ET by BDToday the USA Today published a story entiteled "Army Reserve Falters On Recruitment As More Troops Go Active" by Tom Vanden Brook.
Try as hard as they might, they cannot find the good in the actual story, that more individuals are enlisting in positions that are almost guaranteed combat zone duty as compared to enlisting in positions that MIGHT see combat zone duty.
How could that be a bad news story? Well, USA today will find a way to paint it as such don't ya know....
Oh, and as liberal journo's are wont to do, they bury the good news in the last lines of the story that can be cropped at a moments notice and are rarely read.
Still, the Reserve has exceeded its goal by 13% this year in re-enlisting soldiers, according to the Army. More than 10,000 reservists have re-enlisted.
Stultz called the reservists sent to battle the "best trained and best equipped we've ever had."

April 11, 2007 - 10:37 ET by John in CAJust over the weekend an anti-war freak was on here stating that of all his friends in the reserves/guard, none of them were re-enlisting because they thought the war was such a waste.
Tried to tell him that the stories on the guard and reserve meeting recruiting and reenlistment goals seemed to belie his contention.
Why is that every anti-war person seems to know all the people who aren't re-upping?
Just yesterday, once again, I heard some politician, in some state, whining that because the guard is being utilized so much in Iraq, that preparedness for the upcoming hurrican season is going to be adversely impacted.
When are people going to realize, or acknowledge. that the Guard's primary mission is not humanitarian? Their first mission is fighting.

April 11, 2007 - 18:19 ET by BDJohn:
Concur on the facts about reenlistment being so high. Everyone has forcaseted that the army will crack, rebel, or essentially dissolve for the past three years, but it hasn't happened yet and I see no evidence that it will. Units deployed during WWII went overseas for up to four years without returning home and somehow managed to survive the event.
Regarding your last point, I also concur. Americans do not know their own military history. The bulk of the low number divisions deployed during WWII were National Guard units that were federalized including the first unit deployed OCONUS to europe which was the 34th Infantry Division (Redbull) Minnesota/Iowa National Guard which did not come home until late 1945.
The first unit deployed OCONUS to the pacific Theater was similarly a regiment from the North Dakota National Guard which reinforced the Marines on Guadalcanal. They did not come home for four years.
But somehow having a 14 month on/ 20 month at home OPTEMPO is going to destroy my Army? Huh?

April 11, 2007 - 11:08 ET by rx4musicNow that it appears the charges are being dropped against the Duke boys, will we see Sharpton, Jackson, the MSM or the Duke faculty members make any sort of public apology? (or ANY sort of statement acknowledging the latest news?) Also, let's just see how quickly the news about their case being dropped disappears from the media. As it stands now, it doesn't even appear to be front page news in most media venues... I'm not a big advocate of civil litigation just for the sake of trying to make a buck, but, these kids should sue the asses off of the most vocal of their accusers (Al, Jesse, and company) with Nifong at the top of the list (only in his case I'm wondering if it would be a criminal case)...

Not likely, the will spin it as another example of how the white man always wins and is "keeping the black man down". The truth is, Sharpton and Jackson have done more to keep the black man "down" than any 100 white men.

The first calls on his cell phone came from two lawyers asking to represent him in a slander case. Elizabeth Edwards, they told him, had called him a "rabid, rabid Republican." That wasn't all. The Democratic presidential candidate's wife also told The Associated Press she didn't want her children near Johnson because, she said, he once pulled a gun on workers investigating a right of way on his property.

Citizens!! Arrest Pelosi for Logan Act felony
April 11, 2007 - 11:42 ET by Jack BauerRegarding the typical Republican wussiness in pursuing Nancy Pelosi (D-Feat) for possibly committing a felony under the Logan Act whereby Pelosi has clearly set out to negotiate with a foreign power..
(Tom Lantos, D-Feat, has admitted they were in Syria offering an alternative policy to Assad, ie. breaching the Logan Act.)
There is always a CITIZEN'S ARREST... and fortunately both California and D.C. offer a legal remedy.
Now on the surface, the DC code seems to have an insurmountable barrier, in that...
However, if one stretches the spirit of the Logan Act, the act of negotiating is by itself, a long term affair that must occur over a timeframe...
Therefore it may be reasonable to infer that Pelosi may be thinking about her felonious behavior at the time you see her on the D.C. street.
So please ARREST THIS WOMAN.
I'd pay good money to see the Pelosi Mugshot. Actually on second thoughts, no I wouldn't unlkess her face is covered by a full burka.

Given 70% born out of wedlock, and at least half of all marriages ending in divorce anyway, somebody please tell me what are a young AA woman's chances of finding a partner who isn't totally eaten up with masogyny.

I do not care about these statistics when it comes to this...life isn't fair to a lot of people, we all have obstacles to overcome, some more than others, there is no excuse for this...period.

April 11, 2007 - 15:29 ET by sarcasmoFox News is doing a really good thing right now. They've shut up and just let the innocent have a news conference in peace. All 3 men got to speak, now Cavuto's talking. This was cool. I bitch a lot about Fox, and they certainly could improve, but it was nice that they did the right thing and STFU to just let the victims talk for once.

April 11, 2007 - 15:58 ET by radiofitz34I hope this is the last we hear about the Duke lacross case. Because frankly, I've just about had it with cable news channels. I was really close to blocking FoxNews and CNN. MSNBC who cares? They are as useless as...well you know the expression.
The news channels fill their day with useless crap. Sensationalist journalism 90% of the time. I'd keep CNN Headline news cause I like Glenn Beck.
This is weird. Suddenly I feel like that news anchor guy in the movie "Network". I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. BTW if you haven't seen Network, you must see it. It's very prophetic concidering it was done in the mid 1970's.

We need a pool going here. On 22 April (IIRC) the first round of the French presidential election takes place. All of you are yawning and saying "Who cares?", I know, but these are the kinds of things I keep a sharp eye on. There IS a world out there beyond the borders and shorelines of the United States.
I say that the networks and the cable channels will yawn their way through MAYBE 30 seconds of coverage of the election on 22 April. (Wild Card: if Segolene Royal makes it into the second round, the news channels WILL NOT STFU about it, for they will draw parallels between that Socialist b*#!h and Hillary Clinton.)
Any takers?

April 11, 2007 - 22:50 ET by John in CAIf the Socialist, Royal, wins, not only will France be doomed, but it's going to be a win for Islamists. A couple of weeks ago I read where she was sliding in the polls, and she went out and started promising more largesse from the government.
She also sympathizes with the Muslim community that has gone on the car burning rampages the last couple of years. To show she's a proper appeaser, she joined them in making the electric power station that started the whole thing into a memorial to the two dummies who got themselves fried.
Give a Democrat Party free America a chance!
On the three Frenchies running for President
April 11, 2007 - 23:52 ET by UnsaneTheir polls show Sarkozy in the lead with Bayrou second and Royal third. But I am very weary of polls, especially French polls when Le Pen is running! The French are NEVER honest about their support for him. Note that in 2002, IIRC, both Chirac and Jospin were projected to enter the second round, until Le Pen came in and bumped off Jospin.
I think France is screwed no matter who gets in. Royal will steal some more money and borrow elsewhere and not make any progress. She'll drive France into penury, but hey..."Liberty, equality, and fraternity", right, even if equally impoverished? And no matter what reforms Bayrou or Sarkozy come up with, the French will just take to the streets and throw tantrums like the spoiled adult-sized children they are. They know that they badly need reforms, but when the medicine is prescribed, they retch, because they KNOW it will hurt going down and the side effects will be unpleasant, regardless of the effectiveness of the cure. To wit: 75% of adult-sized children ages 15-24, the most severely effected by France's unemployment, want to work for the government because it is seen as secure employment. If THAT isn't a sad statement for a society, I don't know what is!
