She's a Television Reviewer...

She is a Television Reviewer for the New York Times, but Alessandra Stanley apparently yearns to write in the political commentary section (also known as the Times front page.)

She proclaims that "American Idol" is popular due to -- ready? -- backlash following the 2000 Bush election. Huh?

Did I mention she is a TV REVIEWER? This one's a keeper.

(BTW, she is a TV reviewer.)

The high viewer turnout for “Idol,” which is on tonight, cannot solely be explained by technological advances or a regression in human nature. It cannot be a coincidence that television voting rights arose so soon after the 2000 election left slightly more than half the voting population feeling cheated. Those who didn’t go to the polls and fear that their abstention inadvertently made possible the invasion of Iraq may feel even worse.

The headline: Voting  Rights Drive ‘Idol,’ Not the Abuse or the Hair

MORE:

Maybe the reason that more people didn’t turn out for the 2004 presidential race, despite the closeness of the tally four years earlier, is that they were still in denial and distracted by “American Idol.”

TAXING your barbeque

From the Washington Times Inside The Beltway column today:

Imagine paying Uncle Sam for every hamburger and hot dog barbecued in your back yard.     Word from Capitol Hill yesterday is that the government of Belgium's heavily populated Wallonia region has approved a tax on outdoor barbecuing, to begin in June. According to press reports, the region's 4 million residents will pay 20 euros (up to $35) for every afternoon or evening of grilling, which the government hopes will force a reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions.     Helicopters with thermal sensors will patrol neighborhoods to detect burning grills.

My wife, kids and I visited t

My wife, kids and I visited this little known destination and had a wonderful time. Although travel there is difficult, the people are wonderful, the weather is delightful and the nightlife exceptional. Costs are low, for now, as Rhodentsia is “undiscovered”. Start planning early, as getting there can be difficult. Our summary follows:

Rhodentsia lies on latitude with the Far-flung Isles of Langerhans approximately 100 kilometers from the Barbary Coast, and is most renowned for it’s extensive trade in betel juice, guano and gas-wood. The main manufactured exports are decorative items crafted from flotsam and jetsam, and papier-mâché spittoons. The primary seaport, Jump Ship Bay, is home to a species of rat found nowhere else in the world. Babel, the commercial area adjoining the capital city Vermina, generates 80% percent of the island’s revenue in foreign-language translations of The Reader’s Digest and magazine fall-out cards.  Many citizens speak seven or more languages: street signs are difficult to follow and navigation for the foreigner requires a guidebook written in 37 languages (100 Rastas, available everywhere).

The government, a unique form of constitutional monarchy, includes two legislative bodies called The House and The Garden; the executive branch is The Tree. The judiciary is comprised of nine or more citizens serving indeterminate terms (Stick-arounds) as Solomons. Their judicial robes can be traded for no more than 100 Rastas, the local currency equivalent to the current market value of a live chicken. The new bearer of the mantle then becomes a Solomon, until he or she decides to retire, or buy dinner. The nominal king (The Tree), who traditionally abdicates every year, is selected by lottery and bears the title Fukaniman Bekalin me’ Fukiman. He commences the annual three-day legislative session by stabbing the traditional fishing spear (the messyooup) into the eye of a thrashing sea-carp at daybreak on the vernal equinox.

Rhodentsians are a lively people; nightlife in Vermina and Jump Ship Bay is active. Reggae music abounds in it’s local flavor called Jumpup Falldown, and often includes lyrics evoking the deified Three Muses: Bob Marley, Frank Zappa and Don Ho. Important festivals include Throw the Baby out the Window; Wax the Cat and Now I Live Here, Make Me Dinner which may occur (by popular consensus or king’s decree) any time of the year. Traditional fare consists of groats, tomatoes, fish, mutton, and a paste made from the indigenous wingnut, which, if improperly prepared, presents hallucinogenic and aphrodisiac properties. Most natives do not cook and instead frequent restaurants for the traditional meals of pounded raw wingnut paste and groat beer.

There are no airports or telephones in Rhodentsia, and travel to the island is made by guano scow or lighter-than-air craft. Future plans for expansion, as given by the Island Department of Tomorrow include an Imax theater featuring Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello films and a Charo memorial museum. For more information, contact the Rhodentsia Tourist Board at droponby.com.

Isn't it obvious? Public schools always have a political agenda. I am tired of financing the politics of the right & the left via socialist education, and it's time for a change. I don't care if it's enviroleftists pushing their religion or this legislative loon who claims that the Bible isn't about worship (pretty veracity-impaired, I'd say!) wanting to foist ideology instead of education on kids. I want taxpayers to quit paying for it. One must realize that elimination of religion is a large part of the dem agenda. How long ago was it that a student's painting of Christ was removed from a school? Admittedly, the public education system leaves a lot to be desired but changes do not occur overnight.

I fail to see how the introduction of religion (Christianity or otherwise) in public schools would have made me a better student.

But, THAT being said, I would argue that the grade schools should resemble our university system, with its competition between public vs. private institutions , in order to show improvement.  Unfortunately, the teacher's unions view the schools as a jobs program, not as a place where students get educated.

Why do you assume the state

Why do you assume the state can be somehow good enough at education to compete with private free enterprise schools? Shouldn't they have shown "improvement" by now? Here in Florida, under Republican governors, spending has mushroomed on public schools, with little to show for it educationally, IMO. Don't you know how damn hard to fire bad public school teachers are? Sheesh, it's almost like it's time for another round of "who's the capitalist & who's the socialist?" Nobody seems to want to get rid of any spending anymore.

Why do I assume this?  Look very carefully at the universities.  Granted, their costs seem to constantly rise, but you can't argue the quality of the education, both public AND private.

Actually, my argument would be that the only truly private universities these days are like Hillsdale and that fact tends to negate argument WRT them, so let's stick with the kind of schooling everyone gets/buys where there's still a sharp line between socialist and nonsocialist. Why not allow them to go out of business, rather than just "compete" with huge costs, as in FL under "conservative" governors?

I can't find many socialist schools that have failed in this state, despite many lousy ones scattered Florida-wide, and I doubt politicians of either party really want actual competition instead of another make work jobs program for their largely-unemployable supporters, as socialist education has become. I also think you underestimate just how hard it is to get rid of crappy state employees when, as in this case, socialists have taken root.
JMR

Ok, the cloak's obviously on, but let's try again...

Well, guess what? I don't want to fund the Dem's nutty agenda OR this Republican nutcase's agenda, either. Why should I? How would conservatives like you feel if I wanted socialist schools to teach the truth about hemp, and how would the lefties like Balboa feel if I also wanted 'em to teach the truth about FDR? I wonder if Hillary and her aides are studying Ulbricht's methods for dealing with protesters.

Checkout the below link for what you might expect once Hillary takes power if she decides to follow Ulbricht's methods.  Here is a quote from the link.

"Around noon, the Volkspolizei had trapped many of the demonstrators in an open square. When dozens of T-34 Soviet tanks arrived, a massacre followed. It is still unclear how many people died during the uprising, and by the death sentences which followed. The official number of victims is 51. After the evaluation of documents accessible since 1990, the number of victims appears to be at least 125. Higher estimates put the number of dead at 267. In addition, there were numerous arrests. "
