My wife, kids and I visited this little known destination and had a wonderful time. Although travel there is difficult, the people are wonderful, the weather is delightful and the nightlife exceptional. Costs are low, for now, as Rhodentsia is “undiscovered”. Start planning early, as getting there can be difficult. Our summary follows:

Rhodentsia lies on latitude with the Far-flung Isles of Langerhans approximately 100 kilometers from the Barbary Coast, and is most renowned for it’s extensive trade in betel juice, guano and gas-wood. The main manufactured exports are decorative items crafted from flotsam and jetsam, and papier-mâché spittoons. The primary seaport, Jump Ship Bay, is home to a species of rat found nowhere else in the world. Babel, the commercial area adjoining the capital city Vermina, generates 80% percent of the island’s revenue in foreign-language translations of The Reader’s Digest and magazine fall-out cards.  Many citizens speak seven or more languages: street signs are difficult to follow and navigation for the foreigner requires a guidebook written in 37 languages (100 Rastas, available everywhere).

The government, a unique form of constitutional monarchy, includes two legislative bodies called The House and The Garden; the executive branch is The Tree. The judiciary is comprised of nine or more citizens serving indeterminate terms (Stick-arounds) as Solomons. Their judicial robes can be traded for no more than 100 Rastas, the local currency equivalent to the current market value of a live chicken. The new bearer of the mantle then becomes a Solomon, until he or she decides to retire, or buy dinner. The nominal king (The Tree), who traditionally abdicates every year, is selected by lottery and bears the title Fukaniman Bekalin me’ Fukiman. He commences the annual three-day legislative session by stabbing the traditional fishing spear (the messyooup) into the eye of a thrashing sea-carp at daybreak on the vernal equinox.

Rhodentsians are a lively people; nightlife in Vermina and Jump Ship Bay is active. Reggae music abounds in it’s local flavor called Jumpup Falldown, and often includes lyrics evoking the deified Three Muses: Bob Marley, Frank Zappa and Don Ho. Important festivals include Throw the Baby out the Window; Wax the Cat and Now I Live Here, Make Me Dinner which may occur (by popular consensus or king’s decree) any time of the year. Traditional fare consists of groats, tomatoes, fish, mutton, and a paste made from the indigenous wingnut, which, if improperly prepared, presents hallucinogenic and aphrodisiac properties. Most natives do not cook and instead frequent restaurants for the traditional meals of pounded raw wingnut paste and groat beer.   

There are no airports or telephones in Rhodentsia, and travel to the island is made by guano scow or lighter-than-air craft. Future plans for expansion, as given by the Island Department of Tomorrow include an Imax theater featuring Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello films and a Charo memorial museum. What- no snappy retorts, Bigtimer? You can laugh your ass off, but the fact is that his appointment is a pay-off, pure and simple. And you find it humorous. Maybe having people that know what they are doing in the world is not important to you, but it is to a large number of the thinking public. Bush's recess appointments- remember Bolton?- are done in cowardice, without negotiation, without respect for tradition and protocol, and fly in the face of bipartisianship. The Great Uniter, my butt. If he had any balls he would make a case, not use a technical crack in the door. Withdraw a nomination and then slip it back in while congress is away? What a nutless wonder.
