Vieira and Russert Play Up Rudy's Crime Connections, While Edwards Bonds With America

MRC's Matthew Balan discovered on Friday's "Today" that the latest conventional wisdom among the liberal news manufacturers at NBC is that Rudy Giuliani's struggling under a wave of forthcoming media frenzies, while John Edwards has made an Elmer's Glue bond with the American people with his "60 Minutes" interview with his wife about her cancer. First, the decline and fall of Rudy:

MEREDITH VIEIRA: “I want to switch gears here, Tim, and talk about the 2008 campaign. Two candidates, in particular making news this week, Rudy Giuliani and John Edwards. Let's start with Rudy Giuliani, if we can. Reports today, that when he was mayor of New York City, he knew that Bernard Kerik had a relationship with a company suspected of ties with organized crime, or to organized crime, before he appointed him as New York City police commissioner. He also said in an interview that if he is elected to the White House, he could see his wife Judith having a role in Cabinet meetings. How would assess his campaign at the end of this week? Headed in the right direction?”

TIM RUSSERT: “Well, it's interesting. Mayor Giuliani's campaign had been doing quite well in the polls. Over the last month, however, according to USA Today, he’s dropped some 13 points. The thinking is more conservative Republicans scrutinize his record and stories like the one you mentioned. There is no doubt that the mayor's conduct on September 11th won him lots of friends across the country, but other aspects of his being ‘mayorality’ will be scrutinized as will his private enterprise and private sector involvement. One of his clients in his law firm after he left happened to be the government of Venezuela - Hugo Chavez and Citgo Oil. That will receive a lot of scrutiny. So, there are some bumps ahead for all of the candidates, including Rudy Giuliani.

Then, when the subject turned to Edwards, America has bonded with the Silky Pony, and nobody asked about his record or his mansion or anything controversial any more:

VIEIRA: “How about John Edwards? After he announced that he is staying in this race, despite the fact that his wife Elizabeth's cancer has returned, his numbers actually went up, according to a Time magazine poll, up 9 points. Are you surprised by that?”

RUSSERT: “Well, Meredith, the amount of coverage that received and the way the Edwards conducted themselves at that news conference and subsequent interviews clearly has resonated with the American people. There has been a debate, a discussion, as to whether or not it's appropriate for him to continue to campaign for the presidency. Americans seem to have concluded that it's a decision made that couple. Some of his opponents have accused him of exploiting this issue. But right now, it appears that the American people have said, ‘We have heard you and we listened to you and we, in large part agree with your decision. We are taking a new and interesting look at your candidacy.’”

VIEIRA: “Do you think the numbers are up, Tim, because some people might read that as a sympathy vote for him? Others might say that they saw an Edwards that day, the qualities they would like in the president?”

RUSSERT: “I think a little bit of both. People realize that this is very difficult for a family, particularly a family that’s already had to withstand the death of a 16-year-old son. But also again, the way they conducted themselves at the news conference, I do think, created a bond with the viewing public. You know, it's rare to see a politician out of the setting of answering political questions, and this was real human life - real life and death situation. Everyone has been affected by cancer.”

VIEIRA: “Tim Russert, as always, thanks.”

Another swing and a miss, I

Another swing and a miss, IMO. Rudy's got various problems, and I'm glad the media has finally figured it out, but Rudy's problems have nothing to do with the separate problems of Edwards, and this coverage was too-nice to Edwards, not too-mean to Rudy. Edwards may be a Gore-style hypocrite on carbon with his mansion, but he got all that money from being a trial lawyer, not the mob. Kerik didn't just have "ties" with the mob, he apparently got renovation work worth PLENTY of money (like 2X "Cold Cash" Jefferson or so) from a mob connected firm. Plus, Edwards (unlike either Rudy or his little buddy) seems able to keep it in his pants...
JMR

I am looking forward...

I am looking forward to watching Rudy demonstrate to the American people how to handle the MsM. I am a big Rudy supporter. I also don't have my head in the sand, Rudy has gotten his hands dirty now and then. The difference between Rudy and many others is that Rudy is a bit more forthcoming about such inherent realities in politics and knows how to address the "less than Sainthood" behavior and decisions of even good leaders and keep a positive profile while conceding such.

Shut up and blog! If you claim to be a conservative, please don't disgrace yourself and conservatism by thinking and arguing like a liberal. Go Rudy!

Edwards

Yes, that's what we need in the White House, a "saint" like Edwards who talks to dead babies to make his millions, or maybe a "saint" like Obama, a "pure" child who never says a bad word about anyone. What we don't need is another "corrupt politician" like President Bush. After all, if that happens again, something might just get done, like protecting America against terrorism, keeping the economy roaring,  straigtening out the Korean situation, keeping Iran at bay, or protecting the future for our children. And the mob---oh,my God! Prey tell, what's the difference between the New York mob and the Arkansas mob? Do naivte and ignornance know no boundaries?

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

What Russert and BIG MEDIA

What Russert and BIG MEDIA are up to is Organized Slime.

(And no doubt the Capo di fruitti Capo is renowned mob boss Hillaria Clintonorleone)

Clearly they are very worried about Rudy right about now.

First they thought his lack of conservative credentials would hurt him in the Rep base. That proved illusory as he climbed the polls and every poll shows him beating any Democrat(ic) boss, but especially the Godmother.

So a few weeks back there started to appear lots of organized slime in the press spelling it out to conservatives that hey, this guy isn't a social conservative.

But no go. He just rose even higher in the Republican opinion polls. Okay that wasn't real "slime" in the sense we probably mean it, but it was intended to do a job. It failed.

So now we move onto phase 2 of the "protect Hillaria racket." Organized media mob hits on what are perceived to be Guiliani's big strengths.

#1. His time as mayor during and after 9/11which forever made him Ameerica's Mayor. Hence the mob/union boss contracted firefighter hitjobs over the past few days.

#2. His successful time as Mayor pre-9/11. Hence the hit pieces that like Russert. These will continue over the Sunday shows, getting more and more lurid as other "follow-up." I guarantee it.

Everything is clear if you know how to decode.

You watch. If and when Fred Thompson gets in the race, you will see the whole scenario start again.

Q. Why do people need such big cars?

A. Think of it as 8 Prius's welded together.

James Woods, Shark.

Russert

I didn't think my detesting that Russert could get any deeper. But everytime I see that smiling round mug of his I get sick. To me he represents everything negative about the left --- but, most of all, their unctuous hypocrisy.

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

Wait a minute.  Didn't ever

Wait a minute.  Didn't everyone hear?  Hugo Chavez is a "dignified man" who is "really warm and friendly"; he has met with the Pope; is trying to eliminate poverty in Latin America and "helped in Katrina" (according to Barbara Walters).

So, Jack, why are Meredith, Tim and others vilifying Rudy and his law firm for representing Chavez and Citgo??  They need to catch up with the party line; Giuliani's firm should be applauded.

RUSSERT: “Well, Meredith, t

I love how Russert claims to "know" what Americans think about Edwards.  Anytime, Russert claims to speak on behalf of "Americans" that should be understood as what Russert "thinks" himself.  Russert then substitutes his own "thoughts" as the "thoughts" of "Americans".  Of course, Russert isn't the only leftist in the Washington press corps who uses that fraudulent technique.  I see it all the time.
