Jack doesn't live in this house; Mike does.
Mike Strizki lives in the very first solar-hydrogen house in the U.S. and according to The Christian Science Monitor, "It sounds promising, even utopian: homemade, storable energy that doesn't contribute to global warming."
But the very positive profile of Strizki and his unusual new home left out the cost to other New Jersey residents.
“The total cost, $500,000, was paid for in part with a $250,000 grant from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities,” correspondent Jared Flesher wrote on March 15.
Let's see ... a grant from New Jersey. Since New Jersey isn't a person that means the $250,000 came from taxpayers.
The money used to pay for Strizki's solar-hydrogen house in the name of protecting the environment is roughly equivalent to the electric bill for 2005 for 237 people in New Jersey.

March 16, 2007 - 16:07 ET by jiminjerseyYea well I do and let me tell you it stinks. There are some really great things about NJ. Unfortunately the cost to live here is outrageous. But you are not off the hook.
Corruption, out of control spending and 175 billion in unfunded liablities will soon bankrupt this state. This is what happens when the extreme left wing liberals gain and retain control.
State spending is now @ roughly $35 billion dollars per year and growing @ a rate of somewhere between 8 and 10 percent per annum. That doesn't count local spending which is how we pay for our schools, police, garbage removal, etc.. My property taxes (I own a condo with a 10x15 foot patio) are $6,500 a year. Many of my freinds property tax bills are in the 10K - 15K range. Add that to a 7 % sales tax and and income tax rate between 5.5% and 9%. The NJ taxpayer can not bear any more burden. It is obvious we will not be able to meet our financial obligations.
It will be up to the federal government and you to bail us out1 Thanks!

AS another Garden Stater, THAT ain't gonna happen, not with NY's senators watching the money pot (they want it themselves, no sharing). I'm just wondering when I get an invitation to this house - We could have a party! I'll bring the beer!

March 17, 2007 - 01:26 ET by Right2thePointSince you have all those "local" payments for most of what government does, WTF is all the "State" money going for?
If I were you, I would move to another state where the tax burden is lower and not just stand there with my head in the stocks and say "may I have another one sir".

March 16, 2007 - 16:27 ET by sarcasmoI wonder if FL has a version of this scam? I have a dream of one day not paying FPL (or at least of having a choice of electricity vendors/sources). I'm tired -- especially this time of the year -- of supporting other taxpayers' criminal scams. It might finally be time other taxpayers were forced to pay for one of mine.
