HUGE news from the Libby Trial! Jurors ask judge for masking tape and ANOTHER Post-It pad.
Well, this clinches it for me: the Iraq War is a success, based on this news.
Aren't you oh-so-very happy that our federal dollars and Ohio state dollars are funding complete whackjobs like this guy on Kent State's faculty? Kent State received $129 million in state appropriations and grants, and $46 million in federal grants in 2006. Thank God my tax dollars fund scumbag Jihadis like this guy who make other tards like Fateswebb appear sane in comparison.
You know, it is very disappointing to see our brave soldiers treated like this. No excuse for this. The Administration has dropped the ball (again). Disgusting.
Robert Mugabe: World Leader of the Year!
The Queen of the Hufftards chimes in on her subjects' reaction to the Cheney assassination attempt:
"As soon as these offensive comments came to our attention, they were deleted from the site. But that didn't stop the right-wing hit machine from seizing on them with phony outrage and bogus indignation, pretending that a few anonymous commenters could be equated with the editorial views of the Huffington Post -- and indeed the sentiments of "Democrats and liberals," as Rush Limbaugh put it. The faux fury routine is getting very, very old."
Ironically, there is another Cheney story up on Huffpo, and the same people apparently are posting the same love-filled messages… So, to sum it up: encourage hate and venom from your readers, then blame the Right for pointing it out, and the next day encourage more hate the venom.
Here is another example of discoveries that WON'T be made if the Dems tax the crap out of pharmaceuticals or introduce socialized medicine. (h/t FastEd)
Just keep telling yourself that Iran only wants the best for Iraq…
Well, it's been a week since I posted this: Today's update on the kid who couldn't dress like Jesus for Halloween. Still no word AT ALL on the ACLU website about this case. Why is that?
Thanks to FastEd, who alerted me of this big drug bust. I wonder how many of the 400 busted weren't legal aliens or citizens?

Stalin had a stroke on this day and died soon after, which meant very bad news for another killer named Lavrenty Beria. You won't hear too much about him, but he was in charge of Stalin's secret police and was killed soon after Stalin died. Checkout a book called "Stalin and His Hangmen" if you ever want to learn about Stalin and those who killed for him.

March 1, 2007 - 15:15 ET by Tim the EnchanterDidn't Beria have a torture chamber in his basement so he could take work home with him? The other interesting thing about him is that he was a Pole- there's a lot of animosity between Poles and Russians (Yes, I know Stalin was a Georgian).

March 1, 2007 - 15:52 ET by sarcasmoRegarding the Walter Reed scandal, and no, there's no-other word for it, I'm particularly-outraged. I don't know the raw figures, but given other levels of government spending generally, let me say for the record that I doubt money was the problem. Let me further predict for the record that those whose heads should have long-ago rolled will scream & moan trying to blame too-little-spending, because the only other possible explanation for the scandal is the dysfunctional system & people, as described in the article by Sgt. 1st Class John Allen. Disgusting, indeed. :(

Rog,That Walter Reed story
March 1, 2007 - 16:03 ET by Dave RRog,
That Walter Reed story really got to me. At first, given that it was in the Washed-up Post I was thinking that it was just another ant-Bush hit job. When I finished reading it I didn't care. This was what set me off:
When Walter Reed officials found out that Rumsfeld had visited, they told the friend who brought her -- a woman who had volunteered there many times -- that she was no longer welcome on the grounds.
If Mrs Rumsfeld told her husband about this, as well as what she heard there, and I am sure she did, heads should have been rolling the next morning. This is a total and complete outrage!
Given the lack of aggressiveness, IMHO anyway, of the way this thing in Iraq has been fought, the sudden decision to cozy up to N. Korea and that Hitler wanna-be in Iran (I do not recall us seeking help from Germany in our fight with Japan, or vice-versa) and the fact that those two Border Patrol agents are still incarcerated, along with the rest of the disapointments too numerous to mention here, I have pretty much had it with the Bush crowd.
If GWB resigned this afternoon and let Cheney finish out his term, it wouldn't bother me in the least.
If Tancredo and/or Gingrich aren't on the repub's ticket in the next election, I may very well vote for the libertarian again, as there is no way in HELL I'll vote for McCain or that gun-grabbing Rudy.
I'm through with RINOs.

March 1, 2007 - 16:20 ET by sarcasmoAgreed. I'd like to see Tancredo, Gingrich, and especially Paul in the contest of ideas, and the media declarations about frontrunners seem, to me, a bit hopeful. It's expected, in the context of constant/subtle media advocacy of bigger government, but considering how important the job is, I wish we could see an Anna Nicole minute on actual news from the TV news media every once in a while. And I really hope heads actually roll in this scandal. Hell, I think I'd put that Sergeant in charge...

There are politicians who do not support Iraq, they claim to support our troops but that's BS. Just today the dems are putting together a military budget which is $20 billion less than what Bush has requested. Overspending on pork is never an issue. And just last year the dems were bitching that too many soldiers were being saved.
The Veterans Affairs and Oversight Committees are stacked with dems, Bush haters, Iraq haters, terrorists lovers, spending lovers, all of whom felt too many injured were being saved, now want to investigate Reed? How is this supporting our troops?

He was featured on a Fox News segment about a week ago, saying that while the conditions weren't very good, they would have to make due. It was an admirable thing for him to say, but it really sucks that we, as a society, say that we place a high value on our soldiers, but when it comes to forking over the cash that can actually help them, it's, "Go pound sand." You are stunningly narrowminded to blame the left for the conditions at Walter Reed. Who has been at the control of the purse strings for the last twelve years (prior to November)?

Everything - good or bad - is the President's fault. The President is the guy in charge. And that's what it means to be in charge.
As Harry also said, "If you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen."
And, actually, overspending on pork in the military defense budget is a huge issue. And it has been oh, since 9/11...
As far as "spending lovers" go, you can't beat the Republicans who have been running things in Washington, DC for years. How could you possibly blame the the other party when we've had a Republican President and a Republican majority in both Houses of Congress?

March 1, 2007 - 18:47 ET by Dave RJDW,
Look, no one wants to see Mr. Bush succeed more than I do. Believe me. But if George W. Bush wishes to salvage things, he needs to get off his duff and get busy. Over the last several years, I have seen too many things going wrong that need to be addressed, and, quite frankly, I ain't seeing it happening.
Illegal imigration is probably one of the most important issues to a vast majority of Americans, and Mr. Bush appears utterly paralyzed on it. He won't even order the borders shut down until we can at least get a handle on the problem. Not to mention the fact that there is a pretty good chance that the ragheads are trying to figure out a way to get a small nuclear device into this country and detonate the thing. Believe me, if I were them, that is exactly what I would be trying to do.
Then there is China. The Chicoms managed to get a diesel-electric sub to nearly within torpedo range of one of our CVNs a while back. Can anyone here tell me exactly how it is that that was allowed to happen? Don't tell me we don't have attack boats shadowing our CVNs. How did this commie sub manage to get by them? What has been done to correct this unnaceptable situation? Anything? What the hell has happened to our ASW capabilities? What if the Chicom sub had been armed with a nuclear torpedo? Bye-bye CVN could have been the result. The repubs were in charge of the congress at the time. Were there any hearings? I certainly haven't heard of any.
Then those very same Chinese successfully destroyed one of there own satellites. The response from DC was one of the weakest I have ever heard.
From reports I have been seeing over the last couple of days, it appears that Mr. Bush is about to cave to the Norks and to that Iranian madman, thereby repeateing exactly the same stupidity carried out by WJC and that idiot Albright woman. Why are we even thinking about talking to these people? Have they been sneaking Jihad Jimmy into the Whitehouse to advise Mr. Bush? It is beginning to look like it to me.
I'm sorry, but Mr. Bush is beginning to look very weak to me. If I'd wanted a democrat for a president, I would have voted for the poodle (JFK).
I sincerely believe that if things continue as they are that we are going to lose the WOT, and that is not acceptable.
If this country is asleep at the switch and puts a committed Marxist such as the Hildebeast in the White House in '08, we are going to be ten miles beyond screwed.

I have now zero faith in the judicial system of this nation
March 1, 2007 - 19:07 ET by SportPoliticsI have now zero faith in the judicial system of this nation. I read the link at MSNBC on the Libby trial, and there is no doubt in my mind that our court system is a joke.
I wonder how the press explains the obvious truth that must be concluded when a jury of ones peers has to be forbidden from viewing any news coverage.
I suppose I'd call our court system " managed stupidity" at this point.
Since when is every member of your peer group considered such a goofy group of jackasses that they are not trusted to discern bald faced lying and hyperventilating by the press from the facts or lack there of presented in the courtroom or on or in the news.
I think the whole thing is a mockery of every US Citizen. We'll have to start taking our peers and placing them in incubators all across the nation, so that they can "be fair and impartial jury members", for the circus antics of the insane charade called our court system. Heck we do that already. That's what is required. Adults are no longer adults, but morons swayed irrevocably by the wailings of the press, unable to be a peer group that judges.
I suspect the fact that we are surrounded by emotionally driven liberal retards has led to this "bubble for the jury" legal dictum, along with the fact that without it, the lawyers and judges would have such a hard time lying so often at every turn of their lips, and making insane deals to strike evidence and facts from the proceedings.
I am amazed by the whole charade. I quite understand the elite turdbuckets feel powerless in the face of the citzenry armed with knowledge, and must make sure that only their versions of reality (and lack thereof) make way to the ears of the robots they have seated.
It's such a sham. How pathetic that we have come to the point where our peers are considered ill begotten morons incapable of properly assessing matters.
If we got rid of all the liberals we wouldn't have to do this, but then again isn't that why these jerkoffs handpick from lots of hundreds of "our peers" before they even seat a jury.
Our jury system, our legal system, the laws concerning the judgement of our peers, revolve around the insane lies of the press,or the truth they tell, which is "not allowed" in our modern travesty of justice. What a shame it is. What shame it heaps upon the press, and the people. What a mockery of humanity.

March 1, 2007 - 16:35 ET by j. frank wilsonI could not agree with you more! It is a terrible story.
What I have a very hard time understanding is why was this hidden for so long? Don't any top government officials ever make it over there to visit these folks?
Abe Lincoln found time during the Civil War to slip into the hospitals and visit the wounded. Gen. Patton did (at least in the movie). Rummie couldn't make it? Of course, he "took responsibility" for the prison abuse scandle - although what that ment was never very clear because nothing happened to him.
Yesterday evening Sheer Insanity was quite the apologist for the Administration on this issue. What a joke.
Did you hear the NPR story a few weeks ago about the very successful rehab program that has been completely cut from almost all VA facilities? How can we possibly not have the proper funds for these services?

Regarding the promises to Vets not receiving military healthcare. That stems from the Clinton years when we closed most Military hospitals on posts and farmed out the care to the nearby towns due to budget cuts. The only thing you can get at most post medial centers now are 5 year physicals.

My guess is if Bush or Rumsfeld did anything like that, you wouldn't be reminding us that General Patton ever visited wounded troops.
answer: In addition to awarding various medals and shaking a lot of hands, Patton also had all those suffering from self inflicted gunshot wounds dumped outside the infirmery, all the 'combat fatigue' cases returned to the front lines, and last but not least, slapped a man for cowardice who had run.

Military Retiree benefits & VA conditions (from a retiree)
March 1, 2007 - 18:13 ET by Eric TurnerI hate to tell you but in the contract you sign for enlistment there is no place that guarantees or promises medical care after retirement.
Retirees have had to pay for medical care in some form or fashion for some time. I don't know when it started. But having recently retired (Oct 2006) I can tell you that the amount I pay is less then the amount you will ever pay. For a family of six I pay about $115 a quarter (that's about $460 a year) for two adults and four children. Additionally, since my family receives all its medical care at the hospital on post, I make no co-pay for any visit. If I am refered to an off-post clinic I make no co-pay. I don't pay for prescriptions either (as long as I get them at the military hospital on post). I don't pay for emergency room visits. As a matter of fact, my medical benefits are exactly as they were while I was in the military the only difference being that as an active duty soldier I could go to sick call if I needed to in the mornings. Now I have to make an appointment or go to the emergency room (which does stink). This is the Tricare Prime plan.
All retirees (and families) are automatically covered free under Tricare Basic (I believe it's called). The difference being that you do make co-pays and there are some other differences as well. Regardless, the co-pays are still cheaper than what you are paying probably.
Veteran's and retiree benefits have taken a beating under all administrations since the Articles of Confederation were enacted. So don't make this out to be a partisan issue. However, VA has received more funding in the last six years then the previous eight. Additionally, I can tell you that all of my interactions with the VA have been fabulous. They are undergoing drastic changes for the better. Still, there are many things I wish they would change. They are not saints.
I'm not attempting to defend undefendable mistakes on the part of VA (hospital conditions), but its getting better. I wonder how (as a whole) the VA system stacks up against civilian hospitals.
Additionally, don't forget this...if you want socialized medicine then you can expect more of this kind of treatment and conditions then less of it.

March 1, 2007 - 14:52 ET by MikeBVia the AP: "New York City Council approves resolution urging people not to use racial slur." It is a non-binding resolution urging whites and blacks to stop using "n*gger". "People are using it out of context," said Leroy Comrie, a black city councilman. Out of context? Mr. Comrie authored the resolution that was passed unanimously. While Mr. Comrie was at it, he should have included such terms as cracker, honkey, whitey, coon, spook, darkie, and slurs denoting various nationalities like mick or wop, etc. Indeed, I wonder why he did not address the usage of b*tch to describe women, as heard in so many rap "songs" and in the street.
It is a shame that such a resolution would be brought up at all. In my opinion, it is a demonstration of the decline in politeness and respect in our basic national culture. True, there has never been a time in the history of the U.S., or of any other country, when everyone was polite and respectful to all other inhabitants. But, it seems to me that discourteous behavior has become endemic, indeed, pandemic in our culture. As the Russians would say, "nekulturny".
No, I don't think "there oughta be a law". I think that the qualities of courtesy, politeness, and respect should be taught at home, emphasized in the Churches, and demanded in the schools, even if it adversely impacts the "self-esteem" of a student. Indeed, how can a someone have self-esteem if they refer to someone of their own or another race in these terms?

March 1, 2007 - 17:16 ET by j. frank wilsonSo you read "Mr. Smith is Dead" and you have no problem with a bloated defense budget loaded with pork that takes money from the vital equipment replacement and reserve funds and spends it on - junk. And gets our people killed.
You have no problem with opportunistic politicians immediately jumping on the post 9/11 bandwagon to push their pet projects through Congress - while our military suffers from outdated equipment, un-armored vehicles, and the like?
Are you not interested in learning anything or running the risk of hearing a point of view that very well may be correct?
CDI has a series of outstanding publications on military defense. They were one of the early advocates of spending money on our troops and not simply on high tech war gadgets.
PS: How many millions of dollars have Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward raised for charity? Can you name another pair of actors who have done more for others?

March 1, 2007 - 17:55 ET by BDOne of the key points you will discover in the annual US Army Weapons systems books is that every single weapons system in the book has a corresponding US map showing where all of its componants are manufactured.
They do this so the Pol's can point to the items they bring home to the old district.
What is the difference between a conservative and liberal politician?
A conservative votes for all viable military programs that will do good for the Nations defense.
A liberal votes for only those systems manufacured in their district.
Don't think so? Examine the voting records....

March 1, 2007 - 18:27 ET by j. frank wilsonSo, you would consider Sen. Trent Lott to be a liberal? Yet he pushed for huge military expenditure for Mississippi for something the US Military had announced they didn't want?
Or Sen. Ted Stevens and his illegal and breathtakingly expensive leasing sceme to use converted civilian aircraft as airborne tankers? I seem to recall someone actually went to prison over that one. Another raving liberal?
And if it is always the conservatives who spend the taxpayers' money so wisely, how do you refute the detailed presentation of "Mr. Smith is Dead?" Or do you dispute its contentions without reading them? Why? Why not read it first and learn something - such as how the Republican led Congress used 9/11 to pass a hidiously port-laden defense bill. With the "conservatives" first to be face down in the trough.
I'm disappointed that you should revert to stereotypes rather than facts.

Oh - then there's Chester Lott sticking $700M into the defense appropriations bill to move a railroad the Federal government had just spend - what? - $250M - to repair and renovate.
There's some money well spent!

JDW:I have been mulling soeth
March 1, 2007 - 18:50 ET by BDJDW:
I have been mulling soething over I read this morning from the paper. In it a columnist named Daniel Henninger from the Christian Science Monitor finishes his column regarding the presentation of the Medal of Honor to MAJ Bruce Crandall from the Vietnam war for amazing levels of heroism with the following...
An American soldier in combat demonstrates "the basic goodness of mankind"? And the highest level of human behavior? This was not thought to be true at the moment Maj. Crandall was flying those choppers in Vietnam. Nor is it now.
To embrace the thoughts of Gen. Schoomaker and of Secretary Harvey is to risk being accused of defending notions of American triumphalism and an overly strong martial spirit thought inappropriate to the realities of a multilateral world. This is a debate worth having. But we are not having it. We are hiding from it.
In a less doubtful culture, Maj. Crandall's magnificent medal would have been on every front page, if only a photograph. It was on no one's front page Tuesday. The New York Times, the culture's lodestar, had a photograph on its front page of President Bush addressing governors about an insurance plan. Maj. Crandall's Medal of Honor was on page 15, in a round-up, three lines from the bottom. Other big-city dailies also ran it in their news summaries; some -- the Washington Post, USA Today -- ran full accounts inside.
Most school children once knew the names of the nation's heroes in war -- Ethan Allen, John Paul Jones, Stephen Decatur, the Swamp Fox Francis Marion, Ulysses S. Grant, Clara Barton, Billy Mitchell, Alvin York, Lee Ann Hester. Lee Ann who? She's the first woman to win a Silver Star for direct combat with the enemy. Did it in a trench in Iraq. Her story should be in schools, but it won't be.
What Henninger does not realize is that much like what the last democrat VP pick says, there really are TWO americas. In liberal America, no one fights in the US armed forces or DAMN few anyway. And those that do are chumps. They do not deserve a write up in the paper if a 5 person anti-war demonstration can be covered instead.
In conservative america, we know those who fight, and we revere those men like Crandall who perform extraordinary feats of heroism. But as we know, the press is not conservative, nor the education establishment.
