New widescreen and comment code

For those who were interested in our beta testing of the improvements to the NB look and feel, please replace the old code in your Firefox or Chrome Stylish extension with the following stuff.
Note: We are still testing this stuff so it will not be perfect and may cause some strangeness on your display with fonts.
That said, you'll notice spiffier looking comments, bigger article fonts and a few other small improvements.

If you use the plain text editor for formatting, the following applies:
< blockquote > can be used if you select "Filtered HTML" Format (See Input format below Comment box). In "Comment" Format you can indent by using the dl and dd tags. Use < dl > < dd > and < /dd> < /dl > where you normally would put < blockquote > < /blockquote >.
You still have to use the normal tags within the indent, i.e. < p >, < /p > to get the indent to format paragraphs properly, etc.
One last note, when using the "Comment" format, < cite > < /cite > is used for italics rather than the normal < i > < /i >
I've been using the dl dd method to format my posts because I don't necessarily like the Filtered HTML format.
suggestions. I did notice that some of my old posts where the < blockquote had not originally taken effect, showed indentation correctly, once I installed the Stylish Firefox addon and the stylish code Matthew Sheffield provided.
Still not an option on iphone
.
Several people have asked me how this works. If you already have Firefox, start at (2). If not, you have to load Mozilla Firefox.
(1) To load Firefox, go to this link, http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ and follow the instructions to download Firefox. You may have to restart your computer, etc., etc. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Once you've started Firefox, go to the next step.
(2)
Go back to the FF website.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Across the top on the blue menu bar are several options. Select Add-Ins. There should be a “Search” box right below that on the right hand side. Type in “Stylish” (without the quotes). The Stylish "skin" will come up.
Download that.
In Firefox, open
http://newsbusters.org/new-widescreen-and-comment-code.html (that is this Forum, by the way). That is where Matthew’s code is for the specific goodies for NB.
In that tab in Firefox, on your menu bar (top) you’ll see “Tools”, click that.
Then you’ll see a list, click “Add-Ins”…at the bottom you’ll see “Stylish”, which will have a click button for “options”. Click it.
You’ll get a pop up box. In it, there will be an option button “Copy Style Info”, then copy and paste ALL of the code [text] in Matt’s forum (above). Apply or Save and voila!
Hope that helps.Woot!
The newest code for "Stylish" in Firefox makes the screen lovely and wide. AND the comments are kind of back to the old style, with each comment in it's own little rounded screen box, alternating with grey and white....and easy to tell which comment is under another one (Not here in the Forums, but on the main page...but so what?).
OMO....this is so much better.
Now we need our old comments back. That would make everything right in the NB world.
Ahhhhhhh, but at least in the Forums you can find the (new) comments a lot faster than on the main blog page. :-)
Here is to when that bug will be rectified.
Was restart my browser FF, (actually it got glitchy and crashed). And now the pages dont jump to the bottom anymore. Cant tell you just how irritating I found that feature. Pages seem to load faster too.
I have a Mac, and I had previously downloaded this Stylish
I think they had the "jump" problem fixed earlier today.
Unfortunately for me, the power people came today, to replace our meter. We told the guy to give us a couple of minutes to shut everything off, but the asshole pulled the plug before I got my computer all the way shut down.
So I had a bit of a system crash....my speakers wouldn't work, I lost my Norton Anti-Virus, and some other annoying things. It took about four hours altogether to get myself back up and running, and when I started FF (I'd uploaded the "Stylish" when Lachlan put it up a week or so ago)...I realized I didn't have the widescreen capability (My computer is twitchy, I lose stuff like my network icon and volume icon, and have to system restore to when it was working last)...I realized my upgrade to Stylish was lost.
So in looking for it, I found Matt's new Forum...so I did the whole boat on Stylish with the new code, and it is functioning beautifully. The annoying (changeable) numbers on the posts are gone, and I have nice little stepped boxes on the main page. Nice and wide screen.
My full text editor isn't up and running yet, but enough that I can get by, link...it's all good.
NOW IF WE CAN JUST GET THE OLD COMMENTS BACK *AHEM* MATT....(you know I luv ya, guy!).
Okay, the screen is NICE AND WIDE.
The Rich Text editor is still not defaulting, but so far, so good.
I'll come back after I've driven it around a bit.
Thanks again, Matt.
editor somehow? I've been gone for about 2 weeks, and may have missed it.
And I am missing the "full menu" of text icons, too. It's hard living without the indent.
I know they're working on it (see Lachlan's newest Forum)....but it's still twitchy.
Glad you're back....we missed you.
It's good to be back...It's been a real rough couple of weeks around my house...My mom died a week ago this past Monday (March 14th...I still can't believe it), and as you can imagine, we've all been through the ringer around here trying to cope with that and all the "stuff" that one has to deal with following it. As a result of all that, I just didn't feel up to posting till now, and in fact haven't really been online much at all except to check email, and pay a bill or two. Anyway, thanks for the info.
So sorry to hear that Prairie. My mother in law died at the end of January and I still am feeling somewhat out of it. Take care.
for your kind words...I really appreciate them. I am so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law...We're never really prepared for something like this are we? Thank you again, and you also take care.
My prayers are with u as well. I lost my mother in law last year and it is a very hard thing to go through. May God guide u through this difficult time.
and prayers...They do help...And I am so sorry about your mother-in-law...My prayers are with you all, too. It's just brutal...There are no words to truly describe something like this...We're just taking it one day at a time.
Thanks again.
I am so so very sorry. My heart just really hurts for you. Please know that I am keeping you in prayer. I wish I could make that terrible hurt go away. Yes, just one day at a time, and be gentle with yourself. There's no "right" way to grieve and no set time period. It's an ongoing thing. Big hug to you.
I feel for the other losses on here as well. It's never easy, but that's because love is so powerful. It hurts to love so much, but God knows that and deeply cares. It really is true that everyone we love and lose on this planet is held in our hearts forever, and I have found that part comforting. God comfort all in their sorrow~so very sorry.
so much for your compassionate words...What a kind person you are.
As awful as this all has been, and as much as I wish she were still here, I know that mom is in heaven now, and that thought does give me comfort. I wish I could make things better for my dad and the rest of my family. Mom's death has left such a big hole in all of our lives...I know that in time, it will become somewhat easier, but for right now, it's so hard. Like you, I also believe that we keep our loved ones in our hearts forever, and I know that mom is with God, and those thoughts do help.
Thank you again for your very kind and thoughtful words...They are very much appreciated.
She is looking down from heaven and knowing... you will be together again, just not right now. My dad is up there and patiently waiting on me too. We will all be together again, just not now. Bless you Prarie. Angels have patience.
me with a lot of comfort right now...Knowing that mom is there and is watching over us all until we are all together again. When I'm having a bad moment about this, I try to remind myself of that, and it does help. I'm so sorry about your dad...But as you said, he is there waiting for you, too.
Thank you so much for your compassionate words, Gary...I appreciate them very, very much.
So true, what Gary said. :)
P.S. I sent you a PM.
You and your family are in our prayers.
for your prayers and kind words...They are deeply appreciated.
Matt...
Please re-post the directions on how to upload the "Stylish" for people here.
Oddly, I had to do a system restore (4 hours ago, just back up)...and of course, figured out I'd lost my Stylish....so looking for Lachlan's instructions, ran across this.
But, there are those who can't quite navigate all of it, so if you would be so kind as to put the whole thing on your post....and if I may suggest, kindly pin a note on the top of the front page...for users to follow a link here to get their upgrade.
The last one worked pretty well....I'm so happy it's starting to really come together.
Thanks.

very helpful. I don't check the forum that often. Thankfully I checked it tonight and read both Matthew Sheffield and Lachlan Markay's recommendation to install the Stylish addon in Firefox along with the code provided. What a difference on my 23" screen.
I've been having problems with indentations (<blockquote>). It looks okay when I switch to rich text, but when I preview and post the blockquote indentation doesn't take effect. Now that I've installed the Stylish addon I'll try to see if the indentation problem is fixed. Or is that a separate issue?
