Late Show Update: Letterman Calls O'Reilly A Goon -- To His Face

Noel Sheppard
April 01, 2009 | 11:07

One would think it's bad host etiquette to call your guest a goon.

Yet, David Letterman on Tuesday's "Late Show" did exactly that to Fox News's Bill O'Reilly.

He also told the "Factor" host, "You're too smart to believe what you say."

All in all, it was a friendlier encounter than we've seen in the past with the following notable lowlights (video part I embedded right, part II below the fold):

Regardless of how your brackets are doing, this has NOT been a very good tournament as there really haven't been many good games. In fact, that's GOT to be the WORST Sweet Sixteen in years with six of the eight games total blowouts.

Will today be different?

Olbermann: Bush Admin Members Should Be “In Hell” for Ignoring Pre-War Warnings

Brad Wilmouth
March 07, 2009 | 20:28

On the December 9, 2008, Countdown show, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann charged that Bush administration members – whom he did not specify by name but presumably President Bush was meant to be included – deserve to be "in hell," as he cited a report that a post-war insurgency in Iraq using roadside bombs to attack U.S. troops had been predicted by the U.S. military before the invasion. During the show’s regular "Bushed!" segment, Olbermann lambasted the Bush administration:

So not only did the Bush administration and the Bush Pentagon ignore the prewar intel, that the WMD we sought to recover were not in Iraq, but the Bush administration and the Bush Pentagon ignored that if we removed Saddam Hussein an insurgency of some sort would develop in Iraq. And now we learn the Bush administration and the Bush Pentagon ignored the prewar intel that when an insurgency did develop, it would use roadside bombs to kill the troops we needlessly sent there.

I don’t know what, if any religion you belong to, but I suspect you’ll agree that people who ignored that many foretellings of preventable death should have a long time to think about it in hell!

Below is a complete transcript of the "Bushed!" segment from the December 9, 2008, Countdown show on MSNBC, with critical portions in bold:

Rant for the Ages: CNBC's Rick Santelli Goes Off; Studio Hosts Invoke 'Mob Rule' to Downplay

Tom Blumer
February 19, 2009 | 16:42

Wow. Rick Santelli of CNBC (picture at right is from his bio page) let the elitists running what is turning into a planned economy in Washington have it today with a rant for the ages.

The direct CNBC link is here, while a YouTube is here. Allah at Hot Air has an embed.

What's really revolting about this is the studio reaction. While it's maybe half-kidding at times, the fact that strong opposition to government policies expressed by Santelli and the traders makes these reporters instinctively think of the them being "putty" in Santelli's hands and of "mob rule" is very, very telling -- especially since I haven't heard a peep out of any reporter worried about "mob rule" in ACORN's civil disobedience campaign designed to prevent the carrying out of lawful foreclosures.

Here's a transcript of most of what was said earlier today (I would add bolds, but I would have to bold almost everything):

Public Pans Obama’s Abortion Action

Erin R. Brown
February 03, 2009 | 16:56

New numbers are out about President Obama's performance and they show that, while most Americans favor the majority of actions he has taken, two of his more controversial decisions are highly unpopular. One of the disputed actions, the closing of the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has long been a high-profile issue the media can hardly dodge. But the other, reversing the “Mexico City” policy, has gotten little news coverage. It will be interesting to watch whether they finally report on Mexico City, or even note that Obama has made any unpopular moves.

The mainstream media is still head over heels for our new commander in chief, and he still has honeymoon popularity with the public. But according to a Feb. 1 USA Today/Gallup Poll telephone survey of 1,000 adults, only 35 percent of Americans approved of Obama's decision to overturn the Mexico City Policy, a ban on U.S. funding of overseas family planning groups that promote abortion.

CBS Paints Israelis as in Denial of Civilian Suffering, Ignores Aid Shipments

Brad Wilmouth
January 31, 2009 | 17:35

On the January 1 CBS Evening News, correspondent Mark Phillips took out of context an Israeli statement that "there is no humanitarian crisis" in Gaza and paired it with images of suffering Palestinian children, as if to blatantly embarrass the Israelis and make it appear that they were in denial of or indifferent to civilians who had been injured. After showing a clip of Israeli Foreign Minister Tsipi Livni talking about keeping "pressure on the extremists like Hamas," made during her trip to France, Phillips continued: "But the pressure is not just being felt by Hamas extremists. However well they are aimed, the bombs kill and injure the innocents as well." Pairing a voiceover of himself with heartwrenching clips of Palestinian children who are either injured or who have terrified facial expressions, Phillips concluded: "Israel says there is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Mark Phillips, CBS News, Ashdod."

Google Flags NewsBusters and Other Conservative Sites 'Harmful'

In the past several hours, I have received multiple e-mail messages from readers claiming that internet behemoth Google, for a brief period of time Saturday morning, flagged a number of conservative websites including NewsBusters, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Fox News as possibly harmful to computers.

UPDATE: This is NOT a problem exclusive to conservative websites.

NewsBusters has reported such instances before when they happened to Lucianne and the American Spectator.

Will Media Bash Obama For Trying To Enter Oval Office Via Window?

Noel Sheppard
January 28, 2009 | 16:42

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama attempted to enter the Oval Office via a panel of windows he mistook for a door.

Will media ridicule him for this innocent mistake much as they did George W. Bush when he tried exiting a meeting with reporters in Beijing back in November 2005?

Before we examine the former president's treatment, the Daily News reported Wednesday (h/t NBer Prester John):

Matthews: MSNBC ‘Opened Its Heart to Change,’ ‘Network of 21st Century’

Brad Wilmouth
January 20, 2009 | 19:00

During Tuesday morning’s inaugural coverage on MSNBC, Chris Matthews seemed to admit the liberal pro-Obama tilt of his network as he proclaimed that MSNBC "opened its heart to change," and that they are the "network of the 21st century," and that "this crowd knows us." Matthews: "It sure as hell helps to be on MSNBC today. Let’s talk straight here. This is the network that has opened its heart to change, to change and its possibilities. Let’s be honest about it. These people watch this network out here. ... This is the network of the 21st century, MSNBC, and I think we’re open to it, and that’s why this crowd knows us. ... We’re not crotchety about change and stuffy."

Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of MSNBC’s January 20 inaugural coverage from 11:31 a.m.:
