Time Reporter on Aurora Shooting: 'Sometimes There’s Nothing Wrong With Politicizing a Tragedy'

By Ken Shepherd | July 20, 2012 | 12:25

A  A

Michael Grunwald is doubling down on what many liberals in the media are only hinting at. "[T]here is nothing wrong with politicizing tragedy," the Time senior national correspondent wrote this morning, reacting to the Aurora movie theater shooting. "If advocates or experts or even politicians think their policy ideas can prevent the next Aurora—by preventing potential killers from obtaining guns, by making sure potential victims can carry guns, or by some other method—then by all means, now is the time to spread the word."

Grunwald's callousness on this count has generated criticism, and not just from conservatives. Noah Rothman of Mediaite complained:

Chick-Fil-A Publicly Acknowledges It’s Conservative, Media Upset

By Ryan Robertson | July 18, 2012 | 23:56

A  A

When the head of a major fast food chain underscores his support for traditional marriage, lefty heads explode. Dan Cathy, son of Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett, told the Baptist Press on July 16 that his father's restaurant chain is, in fact, still conservative.

In response to a question pertaining to the franchise’s support of the traditional family, Cathy replied “guilty as charged.” The president and chief operating officer continued, “We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that... we know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles."

Daily Kos Week in Review: Natural Born Killers and Eaters

By Tom Johnson | July 14, 2012 | 07:26

Many on the left believe that conservative policies are at least indirectly lethal, but this week one Kossack imputed additional depravity to right-wingers when he likened them to the best-known group of cannibals in American history.

Sen. Reid Refuses to Call Vote on Obama's Plan to Extend Tax Cuts; Will Media Report?

By Ken Shepherd | July 11, 2012 | 17:13

A  A

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Wednesday rejected a Republican request to vote on President Obama’s income tax plan amid defections within his caucus on tax policy," Alexander Bolton of The Hill newspaper reported just before 10:30 a.m. today. "Reid appeared exasperated by the Republican request to vote on extending the Bush-era tax rates when Democrats would prefer to focus this week on a small-business tax package estimated to create 1 million jobs," Bolton added.

You may recall that on Monday, President Obama renewed his call to extend the Bush tax cuts for every income bracket except that covering income earners making $250,000/year and more, blasting a "stalemate" in Washington and urging Congress to "come together and get this done" without delay because (emphasis mine):

Hunger Games: Daily Kos Smears Conservatives as Cannibals With 'Donner Party Ethics'

By Tim Graham | July 09, 2012 | 17:27

A  A

While Chris Hayes complains about National Review misplacing Barack Obama in Paris, no one will expect MSNBC to question the Daily Kos comparing National Review and other conservatives with...the Donner Party, the snow-trapped pioneers who succumbed to cannibalism to survive in 1847.

The original subject was the “pragmatist” philosopher John Dewey, a left-wing hero. Writer Alex Budarin was upset that Tiffany Jones Miller wrote in National Review in 2009 that Dewey’s philosophy did not match the Founding Fathers. He not only disagreed, but felt compelled to smear "the Donner Party ethics of contemporary conservatism."

Reuters Report Erroneously Claims That 'Most' Prisoners in the U.S. Are Black; Writer Blames 'Editing Mistake'

By Tom Blumer | July 06, 2012 | 15:55

A  A

On Tuesday, Tom Brown at Reuters (HT CounterContempt.com aka "Republican Party Animals") wrote about the case of Quartavious Davis, a 20 year-old sentenced to life (and then some) after being "convicted of participating in a string of armed robberies in the Miami area in 2010."

In the process, Brown, whose column title was inadvertently humorous ("Insight: Florida man sees 'cruel' face of U.S. justice"), demonstrated his lack of knowledge and failure to confirm through research by asserting that "United States ... prisons house fully one-quarter of all the prisoners in the world, most of them black." As David Stein at the linked blog noted, this statement isn't merely untrue, it's most sincerely untrue (link was in original):

Daily Kos on ObamaCare: 'Conservatives Want to Hurt People,' Liberals Want to Help

By Tim Graham | July 02, 2012 | 11:22

A  A

Laurence Lewis at Daily Kos couldn’t help digressing from his blog on the San Francisco gay “pride” parade to ObamaCare. “The difference on health care between Republicans and Democrats, between conservatives and liberals? Republicans and conservatives want to take access to health care away from people,” he wrote on Sunday.

They “want to end Medicare and Medicaid as we know them. In absolute contrast, Democrats and liberals want to build on the ACA, until access to quality health care is a national birth right. In other words, Republicans and conservatives want to hurt people; Democrats and liberals want to help people.”

Crass Obama Campaign 'Event Registry' Barely Registers Any Establishment Press Coverage

By Tom Blumer | June 24, 2012 | 10:58

A  A

This one of the most obvious "if the shoe were on the other foot" items I've seen in some time.

If a Republican or conservative presidential candidate's campaign ever dared to suggest that supporters register their wedding, graduation, or other event so they could then ask friends and family to make donations to the candidate's election efforts in lieu of a gift, the ridicule wouldn't stop for the next year -- and, I should add, deservedly so. But the Obama Event Registry (Obama-Biden blog post here; HT Weasel Zippers), which has been out there for about 48 hours, has barely made an establishment press ripple. What follows is a graphic from the blog post, followed by its first four outraged comments, showing that the idea is not getting a warm, uh, reception.

Most of the Truth About Obama's Business International 'Embellishments' Was Out There -- In 2005

By Tom Blumer | June 23, 2012 | 23:11

A  A

On Thursday, at the Washington Examiner, Byron York concentrated on Obama's clear antipathy towards business as described in David Maraniss's recent book about President Obama (Barack Obama: The Story) relating to Dear Leader's brief stint at a company called Business International.

Though that's obviously a critical point to make during the 2012 campaign, a more foundational one is that this mindset, as well as most of Obama's stream of "embellishments" (most people would call them "lies") about his time at BI, were known or knowable well before the Illinois senator decided to run for president in early 2007 -- even the one that has the folks at Michelle Malkin's Twitchy.com all atwitter, namely that Obama didn't, as he claimed, have a secretary.

Psst! List of Prominent Pols Skipping Dem Convention in Charlotte Is Up to Seven; National Media Stories Are Rare

By Tom Blumer | June 23, 2012 | 10:07

A  A

The count of prominent Democratic Party politicians who have decided not to attend the Democratic Party's convention in Charlotte, thereby attempting to avoid direct association with the formal renomination of incumbent President Barack Obama, is up to seven. Press coverage has been sparse. One can only imagine how much media end-zone dancing there would have been in 2004 had one governor, one senator and five congresspersons chosen not to attend the Republican National Convention to renominate George W. Bush.

On Thursday, the Hill had the story about the latest declared non-attendee, who admittedly is the least surprising addition to list (internal links are in original):

AEI's Pethokoukis Slices, Dices, and Destroys WaPo's Romney-Outsourcing Story

By Tom Blumer | June 22, 2012 | 23:25

A  A

If this were a prize fight, it would have ended at the end of the sixth round in a knockout. In a post at the American Enterprise Institute's blog this afternoon, James Pethokoukis, who previously toiled at U.S. News and Reuters, made mincemeat out of Washington Post reporter Tom Hamburger's Thursday Mitt Romney-Bain Capital hit piece ("Romney’s Bain Capital invested in companies that moved jobs overseas").

Just sit back and enjoy the pummeling. Since Hamburger didn't land any blows, I'll only deal with the punches Pethokoukis landed in explaining "Romney Reality" while refuting six "WaPo World" whines (italics are in original):

MSNBC Guest Insists Neil Munro Motivated by Hatred of Non-white Immigrants, ‘White Supremist Ideology’

By Ken Shepherd | June 20, 2012 | 10:46

A  A

Any old liberal journalist can charge Daily Caller reporter Neil Munro for being a racist for rudely interrupting President Obama during a press conference. It takes a hard-core lefty to delve deeper to diagnose the Irish-born journalist as a bigot for, well, questioning Obama's policy vis-a-vis how it harms the job prospects of American citizens.

During a segment on the June 19 edition of his eponymous program, Bashir assented to the spurious charge by The Root contributor Edward Wyckoff Williams that Munro – an Irish-born naturalized American citizen -- was motivated by a "white supremist [sic] ideology" as evidenced by his belief that President Obama’s quasi-amnesty policy helps illegal immigrants at the cost of job opportunity to American citizens:

Politico Reporter Suggests Racism Explains Munro's Questioning Of Obama

By Mark Finkelstein | June 16, 2012 | 08:45

A  A

A Politico reporter has suggested that racism was behind Neil Munro's questioning of President Obama at the White House yesterday.  Saying "it's very, very difficult to place race outside of this context," the Politico's Joe Williams claimed racially-motivated direspect of PBO is part of a pattern among conservatives, citing Rep. Joe Wilson, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, and the Tea Party.

Williams made his remarks in the course of responding to a question from Michael Eric Dyson, subbing for Ed Schultz on MSNBC last night.  View the video after the jump.

WashPost's Sally Quinn Finds No Pleasure in Church's Teaching on Masturbation

By Ken Shepherd | June 08, 2012 | 13:13

A  A

Sister Margaret Farley probably would have had Sally Quinn's respect when she endorsed same-sex marriage in her 2006 book Just Love, which has recently been denounced by the Vatican as unsuitable for use in Catholic theological or moral instruction due to its various departures from Church teaching.

But by golly, it's the Church's rebuke of Farley's defense of masturbation that Quinn thinks is her ticket to convincing her audience that the Church has lost its mind. From her June 7 On Faith blog post "Fifty Shades of Catholicism" (emphases mine):

Wis. Leftist Group's Mailing Tries to Shame Non-Voters by Revealing Their Names to Neighbors

By Tom Blumer | June 02, 2012 | 15:45

A  A

Friday evening, Madison, Wisconsin blogger Ann Althouse reported receiving (HT Instapundit) an "Incredibly creepy mail today from the Greater Wisconsin Political Fund." She has a put up an image of what she received with names and addresses redacted (except for her name). It's a list which includes Althouse and many of her neighbors indicating who has and hasn't voted in the last two elections.

Unsurprisingly, the Greater Wisconsin Political Fund is the political fundraising arm of the Greater Wisconsin Committee, both of which lean very left. Both support the effort to recall Badger State Governor Scott Walker. Both appear likely to get a virtually free pass from the establishment press. Althouse's reaction follows the jump:

Daily Kos Distorts Old Scott Walker Clip to Insist He Was Soft on David Duke

By Tim Graham | May 22, 2012 | 23:18

A  A

On Daily Kos, Jesse LaGreca calls himself “Ministry of Truth.” That moniker certainly doesn’t match his latest blog post, headlined “Young Scott Walker downplays KKK Grand Dragon David Duke's extremism”.

Using a very selectively edited video, LaGreca asserts “Walker can beat up on labor rights but he couldn't bring himself to bad mouth another Republican, even if that Republican is a self avowed white supremacist.” But in the actual video, Walker attacks Duke as a neo-Nazi and compares him to cannibal killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

The flap over the proposed big-bucks campaign that would have played up President Obama's ties to Jeremiah Wright turned into a one-day story, but it was enough to inspire one Kossack to envision a comeuppance for "anti-human" conservative "bastards," and then to wish some "horrific" intestinal distress on John Roberts.

MSNBC's Toure Teams Up with Rev. Jesse Jackson to Push Religious Black Voters to Evolve On Same-Sex Marriage

By Ken Shepherd | May 17, 2012 | 15:08

A  A

"Some religious leaders are struggling with President Obama’s support for gay marriage but not the Rev. Jesse Jackson," gushed frequent MSNBC contributor Toure noted in the opening line of his May 17 Time.com "Ideas" blog post as he introduced how he "spoke to the Reverend [Jesse Jackson] about the impact of Obama’s announcement among blacks and the wider community of the faithful."

It goes without saying that the interview was a game of softball in which Toure helpfully lobbed easy questions over the plate to drive home for readers, but particularly those who may be African-American Christians who typically vote Democratic, that it would be great if they could evolve to where President Obama has on same-sex marriage, a "civil rights" and "discrimination" issue.

Malicious 'Flag Spammers' Once Again Trick Google Into Censorship

Hours after New York blogger Christian Browne wrote on his blog, “The New York Conservative,” that 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed should be quickly executed, Google shut down his blog, which was hosted on Google's free Blogger service.

While the blog – including the post that appears to have triggered its deletion – have since been restored, the circumstances of its deletion by Google remain murky – and raise a serious issue both for Google and for conservatives who use the web to spread conservative ideas and messages.

Imagine That: Obama Favored Legalizing Same-Sex 'Marriage' Without Qualification in 1996

By Tom Blumer | May 12, 2012 | 11:23

A  A

President Barack Obama's allegedly "historic" support for same-sex "marriage" apparently has "prehistoric" roots -- at least as "history" is seen by the establishment press, which has acted as if all relevant history relating to Barack Obama began with his 2004 Democratic convention speech.

A Friday Los Angeles Times puff piece ("President Obama's influence on gay marriage will be tested") on the potential impact of President Barack Obama's decision to publicly support same-sex "marriage" -- supposedly for the first time -- caused blogger and longtime LAT nemesis Patterico to remind readers that Obama was a proponent of same-sex marriage without qualification during those "prehistoric" times -- in 1996 (links are in original):

Sigmund Freud's reputation isn't what it used to be, but his thinking still influences behavior such as the left's tendency to psychoanalyze the right. Daily Kos: The Terrorists Prefer That Weakling Bush

By Tim Graham | May 09, 2012 | 22:49

A  A

Over at Daily Kos, "Zenox"  wants the online world to know that President Obama is much, much scarier to Islamic terrorists than President Bush ever was. The worry is that al-Qaeda has "decided to make a showcase of a U.S. aid worker (Warren Weinstein) kidnapped in Pakistan in 2011" and this "hostage who happens to be a Jewish American (I am guessing from his name)" is a trap to sabotage Obama's re-election.

We're assured "The Taliban, al-Qaeda, Islamists do not want Barack Obama to get re-elected. Period. And frankly who could blame them? They had it pretty good during the Bush years." (Italics theirs.)

Daily Kos Week in Review: Romney Not Just Whistling 'Dixie'

Mitt Romney has ties to quite a few states -- most notably Michigan, Massachusetts, and Utah -- none of which was on the Southern side in the Civil War. CBS's Gayle King: 'Obama is Doing A Very Good Job'; Supports Buffett Rule

By Matthew Balan | May 01, 2012 | 12:04

A  A

CBS anchor Gayle King, an admitted friend of Michelle Obama and a donor to Mr. Obama's reelection campaign, trumpeted the President's record during an interview with Nicholas Ballasy of The Daily Caller on Saturday: "President Obama has done everything that he said he was going to do, and I think people keep forgetting that....if you ask me, I think President Obama is doing a very good job."

Ballasy, an alumnus of the MRC's CNSNews.com, caught up with King after the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner. The CBS This Morning anchor listed several areas where the chief executive apparently kept his promises: "He talked about health care. He talked about Osama bin Laden. He talked about 'don't ask, don't tell.' He's done everything that he said he was doing to do." Of course, the President also promised to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center for terror suspects during the 2008 campaign, but broke that pledge in 2011.

Romney Dog on Roof-Obsessed Gail Collins at NYT Has Ignored 2003 Rescue Story Her Paper Published

By Tom Blumer | April 29, 2012 | 10:36

A  A

Per her bio, Gail Collins at the New York Times "joined the New York Times in 1995 as a member of the editorial board and later as an op-ed columnist. In 2001 she became the first woman ever appointed editor of the Times editorial page." So she was hanging with the Old Gray Lady in 2003.

The columnist's presence at the paper that year is quite relevant. You see, Ms. Collins has brought up the 1983 story of Seamus, the Mitt Romney family Irish setter, who the presumptive GOP presidential nominee put "into a dog carrier on the roof of his station wagon for a 12-hour trip to Ontario," on dozens of occasions in her Times column in the almost five years since the story first appeared. Yet during those five years, it seems she has never recognized (and if she has, she certainly has not been chastened by) the existence an exceptionally positive dog-related Romney story printed in her employer's own paper on July 8, 2003. It follows the jump (underlines are mine; presented in full for fair use and discussion purposes):

A Year Ago, IBD Noted Venezuelan Funding of Flawed 'Gasland' Documentary on Which EPA's 'Crucify' Official Collaborated

By Tom Blumer | April 29, 2012 | 01:30

A  A

A year ago in March, an Investor's Business Daily editorial ("America's Enemies Don't Want U.S. Drilling") informed readers that "the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington put out a Twitter post expressing disappointment that the documentary 'Gasland' didn't win an Academy Award." Specifically: "Sadly, 'Gasland' didn't win an Oscar, because a Vzlan helped make it," Venezuela's Twitterer whined." IBD went on to note that "Gasland" had "a Venezuelan production assistant, Irene Yibirin, who ... (has) ties to the (Chavez) government's Foundation National Cinematheque. ... [O]n the site, she praised Chavez."

Why is this relevant? Well, as another IBD editorial on Thursday noted, EPA Region 6 Administrator Al Armendariz, who became deservedly infamous last week when his public articulation of his "Crucify Them" philosophy towards enforcement of environmental laws and regulations in a speech a year ago was exposed, really loves the film, which industry officials have shown is riddled with deceptions and outright falsehoods. Not only that, he was also involved in making it:

Writer Rips Romney for 'Obama/Osama' Gaffes; Makes Same in Article

By D. S. Hube | April 22, 2012 | 10:38

A  A

Earlier this week saw Mediaite's Tommy Christopher hilariously see "racism" in a Romney campaign banner and witnessed  Christopher referring to himself in the third person throughout an article about ... himself. But perhaps the highlight is an unintentionally guffaw-inducing line in this story. In it, Christopher makes a big deal out of past Mitt Romney gaffes where he momentarily confused "Obama" with "Osama (bin Laden)" (but in which Romney had immediately corrected himself). The problem is, in the very same column, Christopher does just this himself. To make things worse, Christopher (or his editors at Mediaite), after a few hours, edited Christopher's "Romney-like" gaffe without noting the correction. But no matter -- we have a screen capture. Here's the original paragraph as it appeared:

Daily Kos: Average GOP Voter Takes 'Bribes'

By Tim Graham | April 19, 2012 | 06:42

A  A

Leftists have a stunning ability to diagnose a political malady in conservatives that they themselves have in great abundance. They denounce Fox News as more of a political organization than a news network as their remotes are stuck on MSNBC. Now the Daily Kos thinks the Republican Party is more of a "criminal organization than a political organization with any sort of ideas."

On Tuesday, the Kosmonaut known as "Troubadour" wrote a little article titled "Republicans Are Corruption Incarnate." It diagnosed the average Republican voter as corrupt, because "Republicans bribe them" every election with tax cuts. Bribed with their own money, withheld from their paychecks! As opposed to the Democrats who are awarded other people's money?

AP Reporter on Dems' North Carolina Sex Harassment Scandal Cites 'Turnover' as Ousted Chair's Bigger Problem

By Tom Blumer | April 16, 2012 | 14:26

A  A

The willingness of the Associated Press, aka the Administration's Press, to cover for Democratic Party flubs, crimes, and scandals is something to behold. On Sunday, the wire service's Gary D. Robertson (pictured from a recent YouTube video) opened his coverage of North Carolina's Democratic Party executive director Jay Parmley with the following sentence: "The executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party has resigned amid concern among party activists about high turnover at the party headquarters and harassment allegations there." Yeah, that "turnover" had to be a much bigger problem than those harassment allegations.

Gosh, the coverage two days earlier by Matt Boyle at the Daily Caller "somehow" had nothing to say about "turnover." But Boyle did name names and cite other specifics, with which the AP's Robertson, in his terse, five-paragraph "I guess I have to do this but I'm not going to like it" piece, never bothered:

AP's Babington Can't Understand Why Anyone Would Think Obama Doesn't Support 'Backburner Issue' of 2nd Amendment Rights

By Tom Blumer | April 14, 2012 | 22:33

A  A

In covering GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's appearance at the annual National Rifle Association convention in St. Louis yesterday, Associated Press aka Adminstration's Press reporter Charles Babington pretended to know nothing about President Barack Obama's opposition to basic Second Amendment rights. At least I hope he was pretending, because Obama's hostility to the right to keep and bear arms is longstanding, well-known, and did not stop when he swore an oath to "protect and defend the Constitution" on January 20, 2009.

I have excerpted Babington's first four paragraphs plus three others. I will follow that with a rundown of Obama's pre-2008 gun-hostile record, his meeting with the Brady group in May 2011, and this "little" thing called Operation Fast and Furious Babington and his establishment media colleagues have mostly deliberately ignored for well over a year (bolds are mine throughout this post; HT to a frequent emailer):
