Pay Cable’s Race to the Bottom

By Lauren Thompson | June 06, 2012 | 12:32

A  A

Good news for pay cable viewers who like their sex scenes graphic, bloody and spiked with an unhealthy dose of violence. HBO’s original series “True Blood” is set to begin its fifth season on June 10.

While it remains to be seen if “True Blood” can top a scene from a previous season in which a male vampire twists a female’s head around 180 degrees during a bout of blood-drenched “hate sex,” the promos make clear that the season won’t skimp on the sex and violence.

By Noel Sheppard | May 26, 2012 | 16:15

A  A

Last year New York Times columnist and Nobel laureate Paul Krugman called for space aliens to invade earth so that the government would spend money to mount a defense thereby stimulating the economy.

As aliens have yet to comply with Krugman's wishes, he advocated on HBO's Real Time Friday that scientists should get together and lie about an imminent attack to boost federal spending (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Bill Maher: Obama Didn't Support Simpson-Bowles Because Republicans Didn't

By Noel Sheppard | May 26, 2012 | 14:14

A  A

Bill Maher is either a blithering idiot, a pathological liar, or both.

On HBO's Real Time Friday, the factually-challenged financier of Barack Obama actually had the gall to say the President didn't support the recommendations of his National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform (aka Simpson-Bowles) because - wait for it! - Republicans didn't support it (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Laura Ingraham Schools George Stephanopoulos: 'Did Obama Give That Money Back to Bill Maher?'

By Noel Sheppard | May 20, 2012 | 15:14

A  A

Conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham gave a much-needed education to ABC's George Stephanopoulos Sunday about the tremendous double standard involving campaign contributions.

After Ingraham pointed out that Barack Obama is never held responsible for things MoveOn.org does, ABC's This Week host foolishly said, "The president's been held accountable for Bill Maher" leading the conservative talker to smartly respond, "Did he give that money back to Bill Maher?" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Maher Claims Romney 'Bullying' Worse Than Michael Jackson Molestation

By Brad Wilmouth | May 16, 2012 | 05:33

A  A

Appearing as a guest on Tuesday's Conan show on TBS, HBO comedian Bill Maher absurdly suggested that recent allegations that Mitt Romney engaged in "bullying" in high school are worse than being molested by Michael Jackson, and asserted that he would be willing to trade being beat up in grade school for being "gently masturbated by a pop star."

Maher also again attacked Mormonism and religion generally, using uncensored vulgarity, and seemed to hold Romney responsible for the polygamy of his grandfather.

The Real Time host brought up Michael Jackson to suggest that Romney had behaved worse than a child molester:

By Noel Sheppard | May 12, 2012 | 10:18

A  A

Vulgar comedian Bill Maher took another cheap shot at Bristol Palin Friday evening.

Maher Opposes Charitable Tax Deductions to Mormon Church and the Arts But Supports NPR Funding

By Noel Sheppard | May 05, 2012 | 12:00

A  A

HBO's Bill Maher took a lot of heat last week for calling Mormonism a cult that isn't a charity because it doesn't give to poor people.

Defending himself on Friday's Real Time, the host explained why he believes contributions to the Mormon Church and such things as the symphony and the ballet shouldn't be tax deductible but ignored that he supports federal funding of NPR (partial video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

Gumbel: ‘Whipping Up a Frenzy’ Over Imagined Slights ‘Is a Play Straight Out of a Far Right Handbook’

By Brent Baker | April 30, 2012 | 02:15

A  A

Catching up with Bryant Gumbel from a couple of weeks ago, on the April edition of his Real Sports show on HBO, the NBC News and CBS News veteran came to the defense of Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen, who caused outrage amongst Cuban-Americans when he declared “I love Fidel Castro.” In an end of the program commentary, Gumbel couldn’t resist taking a jab at conservatives, charging:

Whipping up a frenzy over slights real and imagined is a play straight out of a far right handbook and Florida’s electoral cloud has often given Fidel’s critics far more leverage than their arguments merit.

Jimmy Kimmel Slams Marcus Bachmann With Gay Jokes at White House Correspondents' Dinner

By Noel Sheppard | April 28, 2012 | 23:55

A  A

Is the White House Correspondents' Dinner the proper venue to make gay jokes about the husband of a current female member of Congress?

NBC's Jimmy Kimmel certainly thought so as he took a page out of vulgar comedian Bill Maher's playbook claiming Keith Olbermann "has more pink slips than Marcus Bachmann" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

By Noel Sheppard | April 28, 2012 | 10:19

Bill Maher on Friday evening once again displayed a level of ignorance and intolerance that should completely disqualify him as a political commentator.

On HBO's Real Time, the vulgar anti-theist said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney doesn't give to charity. "All his charitable donations are to Mormons. He gives to his cult. That’s not a charity. They're not poor people" (video follows with transcript and commentary, serious vulgarity warning):

HBO’s 'Girls': A Voice for the Worst Generation

By Lauren Thompson | April 17, 2012 | 15:45

A  A

Lena Dunham’s new show, “Girls” debuted April 15 on HBO, and predictably it’s the new media darling for its awkward “honesty” and incredibly feminist plot. “Girls” is all about the woes and misery of idle youth and post-collegiate despair, and if Dunham really is “the voice of a generation,” as she claimed in the pilot (while high on drugs) then our future looks bleak.

In 30 minutes “Girls” managed to casually reference abortions, show graphic nudity and sex scenes and depict characters getting high on opium. Upcoming episodes will include sexually transmitted diseases and a masturbation scene (starring Allison Williams, daughter of NBC News’ Brian Williams – Dad must be so proud!).

HBO Imports Story Featuring Very Young Girl Sucking on Plastic Penis Cup

By Paul Wilson | April 10, 2012 | 15:37

A  A

The sexualization of children is now promoted on “edgier” cable entertainment outlets. “Angry Boys,” an Australian “mockumentary” shown by HBO, showed a young girl drinking out of a pink plastic cup shaped like a penis in Episode 12.

The incident is meant to be comedic. But showing a young girl sucking on a penis in a comedic fashion is akin to showing child pornography.

Palin on NBC: 'I Wouldn't Waste My Time' With 'Lies' in HBO's 'Game Change'

By Kyle Drennen | April 04, 2012 | 11:20

A  A

While serving as guest host on Tuesday's NBC Today, Sarah Palin literally gave HBO's hit piece on her, Game Change, a thumbs down, and declared: "I didn't see the movie. And I wouldn't waste my time seeing the movie....because I don't waste my time on false narratives, on lies." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

Palin made the criticism during the Today's Professionals panel segment, causing shock among the liberal pundits. Advertising executive Donny Deutsch wondered: "So you didn't like Julianne Moore?" Attorney Star Jones proclaimed how much she liked the movie and asked in disbelief: "Are you telling the truth? You didn't see it?" Co-host Matt Lauer chimed in: "You didn't see Game Change? You never saw it?"
