Cus the last one's gone past 300 posts!

You like me!  You really LIKE me!!!

Hi! My name is pi314. I'm a Lib. I'm here to discuss issues relating to politics.
If you don't insult me, I won't insult you. On this thread, bygones will be bygones.
Here's what I believe:
I believe that a number of people in the Bush administration -- John Woo, Douglas Feith, Donald Rumsfeld, and yes, Dick Cheney -- should face charges for having enabled the U.S. to become a nation that looks upon torture as a valid tool for gathering information.
I believe the right listens to too many voices -- Limbough, Coulter, Beck, Hannity, Erick Erickson, Mark Levin -- who are out to inspire not just political dissent, but actual revolt on the part of the right. And I can see a day when Democratic party headquarters, ACLU offices, Media Matters offices and others.... see their own Liberal "Kristallnacht". I foresee pitchforks and torches.
I believe that the right wing "war on science" is real, and the left wing "war on Christmas" is balony.
I believe I can fly. I believe.... oh wait, that's a song... nevermind.
Let's discuss.

Hey JWF!!!

This is a chance to "wipe the slate clean".

Don't insult me, I won't insult you, just like the intro says.

Are you man enough?

The Vet's Greatest Hits #14

I am starting to understand BDS when it comes to Obama. I really really really am starting to loathe this man.

First it was the flag. The military is big on the ceremony, and the U.S Flag is part of the ceremony.

Every single time he comes close to military matters, he sticks his foot in his mouth.

His latest blunder is the "strike force" that will remain in or close to Iraq. Uh, guess what, no such animal. I hate to say this but google it, it only exist in Ninja Obama's mind. Obama the military expert will have to create one. Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force, Strike Force Death Squad One!

Personally, I think he saw Team America World Police one too many times.

Hi. My name is pie14 and I have daddy issues.

Hi! My name is pi314. I'm a Limpy. I'm here to discuss issues relating to pederasty.
If you put things in me, I will enjoy it. On this thread, I will engage in many many many fallacious arguments.
Here's what I believe:

  I believe I, pi314 am attracted to pre-pubescent children.

I believe that a number of people in the Bush administration -- John Woo, Douglas Feith, Donald Rumsfeld, and yes, Dick Cheney -- should face charges for having toughened the laws on sexual deviants like me, pi314, that prey on children. I look upon torture as a valid tool for my gratification.

I believe the my head  listens to too many voices telling me to hang out in parks and schoolgrounds. -- Limbough, Coulter, Beck, Hannity, Erick Erickson, Mark Levin -- they hate my type.

And I can see a day when Democratic party headquarters, ACLU offices, Media Matters offices and others.... will roll back the laws on people like me that prey on children. I foresee pitchforks and torches from angry parents that hate me.

My favorite time of year is "Christmas"when children are the most vulnerable.

I believe I can fly. I believe.... oh wait, that's a song... nevermind.
Let's discuss.

Every time I think you've hit bottom

Well Pi

If nothing else, I have never seen in over 2 years here,  someone  creating 3-4 forums that go over 300 post so quickly in a short amount of time.

How about the current administration, how good of a job do you think they are doing so far?

He had my vote

Honestly....

I think it's too early to tell. Plenty of "newbie" mistakes so far, but if he gets the big stuff right, none of that will matter.

pi314

I don't know too much about stem cells, I promised another poster I would do research on it, but so far I am glad the federal funding on stem cell reseach.

Other than that I would give him a D so far.

He had my vote

Very important!!

The federal funding for stem cell research could make a HUGE difference.

The ones who were against it were against embryos being destroyed to harvest the stem cells... two, three celled embryos which would  simply be flushed down the toilet if not harvested for stem cells.

You don't see them coming out against flushing them, do you!  Because they would have to go up against the in vitro fertilization industry to do that.

~Shawn

Embryonic stem cell research has been going on all along, but now our tax dollars will be funding some of it.

Embryonic Stem Cell Advantages
1. Flexible—appear to have the potential to make any cell
2. Immortal—one ES cell line can potentially provide an endless
supply of cells with
defined characteristics
3. Availability—embryos from in vitro fertilization clinics

Embryonic Stem Cell Disadvantages
1. Difficult to differentiate uniformly and homogeneously into a target
tissue
2. Immunogenic—ES cells from a random embryo donor are likely to
be rejected
after transplantation
3. Tumorigenic—Capable of forming tumors or promoting tumor formation
4. Destruction of developing human life

Adult Stem Cell Advantages
1. Special adult-type stem cells from bone marrow and from umbilical cord
have been
isolated recently which appear to be as flexible
as the embryonic type
2. Already somewhat specialized—inducement may be simpler
3. Not immunogenic—recipients who receive the products of their
own stem cells will
not experience immune rejection
4. Relative ease of procurement—some adult stem cells are easy to
harvest (skin,
muscle, marrow, fat), while others may be more difficult
to obtain (brain stem cells).
Umbilical and placental stem cells are likely to be
readily available
5. Non-tumorigenic—tend not to form tumors
6. No harm done to the donor

Adult Stem Cell Disadvantages
1. Limited quantity—can sometimes be difficult to obtain in large
numbers
2. Finite—may not live as long as ES cells in culture
3. Less flexible (with the exception of #1 above)—may be more difficult
to reprogram to
form other tissue types

When the US president lifted the partial ban on federal funding for
embryonic stem cell research stem cell research, he did not mention
that Embryonic Stem Cells (ESC) have never worked on humans or animals
and never will, said Margolis.

He also didn't mention that
Embryonic Stem Cells, when injected into your body, can cause deadly
tumours as they have in thousands of lab animals.

To date, most of the stem cell triumphs that the public hears about involve the infusion of adult stem cells.
During the first six weeks of Obama's term, several events reinforced the notion that embryonic stem cells are obsolete.

That high-pitched scream you hear is the troll under my heel.

Hi Chose

As far as I can tell this is all accurate.  I would argue, though, with the Margolis quote.  His is one opinion, but it appears that most others in the field disagree with him.

As for more success to date with adult than embrionic cells, there's this from the NIH:

http://stemcells.nih.gov/info/faqs.asp

Scientists
have only been able to do experiments with human embryonic stem cells
(hESC) since 1998, when a group led by Dr. James Thomson at the
University of Wisconsin developed a technique to isolate and grow the
cells. Moreover, federal funds to support hESC research have only been
available since August 9, 2001, when President Bush announced his
decision on federal funding for hESC research. Because many academic
researchers rely on federal funds to support their laboratories, they
are just beginning to learn how to grow and use the cells. Thus,
although hESC are thought to offer potential cures and therapies for
many devastating diseases, research using them is still in its early
stages.

In late January 2009, the California-based company Geron received
FDA clearance to begin the first human clinical trial of cells derived
from human embryonic stem cells.

Adult stem cells such as blood-forming stem cells in bone marrow
(called hematopoietic stem cells, or HSCs) are currently the only type
of stem cell commonly used to treat human diseases. Doctors have been
transferring HSCs in bone marrow transplants for over 40 years.

I think a lot of the controversy around it really comes down NOT to whether it's effective, but whether you're anti-abortion.  It's seen as destroying a human life," even though that human "life" is just a couple of cells.

What galls so many of us on the left is that those on the right seem to care more about that bunch of cells than about the living breathing human beings the research might help.  What's more -- as I've pointed out before -- most of the embryos used are simply going to be thrown out!  Flushed down the toilet, or whatever they do.

~The key is

The embryos are most assuredly destroyed, while there is no guarantee that anyone will be helped.

destroying a human life

the research might help.

That whole "cells mutate into one of the most lethal forms of cancer" thing makes me think our time would be better spent improving our work with adult stem cells, anyway.

COuld be...

The question is, do we possibly give away the lives of thinking, breathing adults because we're afrid of harming a "human" who consists of just a few cells?

I say let's let the researchers do their work.  If they find adult stem cells are better than embryonic stem cells, BELIEVE ME, they will rather work with the adult cells.

I disagree

The question is "If  emb. stem cell research is so promising, why isn't Soros and his ilk pouring money into it?"  You see, then BO wouldn't have to steal taxpayer's money for their little experiments.

Seeing as how these wealthy socialists actually DO know how to make a lot of money, then it stands to reason that the research just isn't that promising. AND it is just another redherring the socialists are using to take money away from us working people.

simply attempting to make the other person angry, without trying to address the argument at hand. Sometimes this is a delaying tactic.

If we divorce performance from outcome, he is doing marginally.  BUt that is like saying the Corvette was driving well all the way until hit hit the brick wall.

His expressed policies are ruinous and if enacted will take years to recover from.  But luckily he is having a tougher time enacting them than even a short time ago.

That's opinion

His expressed policies are ruinous and if enacted will take years to recover from.

No evidence for that. We all wait to see.

Considering the damage we know W did to our economy -- which O is trying to help us recover from -- I'll trust O to get it right.

You should too.

you know?

economics?

"Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend,------------inside a dog it's too dark to read"   ---Groucho

Not much

But I do know that many economists say his plans WILL work.

And any speculation for or against is merely that -- speculation.

Agreed?  Or do you claim to be able to see the future?

well pi

more than doubling the debt in 2 months while reducing assets is sound economics?

failing to address the root causes of the economic slump is sound economics?

Bush caused the Congress to continue forcing lenders to give loans to unqualified borrowers?

"Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend,------------inside a dog it's too dark to read"   ---Groucho

And...

The last eight years of Bush-O-nomics was sound?  That's what got us into this freakin' mess.

My thinking is, you guys had your chance. Now it's our turn. And I seriously doubt we can make any more of a mess than Bush made.

Pi

Don't forget the Dem congress had controll for Dubyas last two years and things just got worse

Also I am in the minority here when I say things were great under Clinton, however Clinton was great, when working with a Repubican congress

He had my vote

That's a JOKE

Dems had NO control those last two years and you know it. Everything we tried to push through was blocked.  EVERY SINGLE MEASURE.

Don't try to say that because we had a simple numerical advantage that we actually had control. We did not.

pi

How many times did Bush use his Veto pen the past 2 years, it was not that many.

The Dem congress failed and failed miserably, what about the armor for the troops in Iraq they promised.

Their only claim to fame was investigation after investigaton of the Bush administration.

I am a fair person and I call it like I see it, and the Dem congress did nothing.

He had my vote

Oh PLEASE!

Compare the investigations into the Bush Admin with those into Clinton!!

And second, Bush wages this war for 6 years, and you blame the 2-year powerless CONGRESS for not gettintg them the proper armor?!?!

C'mon, Shawn.. you're smarter than that.

The Vet's Greatest Hits #11

I can't speak for all the nut cases Roland S. Martin

May 21, 2008 - 11:12 ET by JWF

I will just speak for myself, a 20 Navy vet. It is important, here is why:

I saluted the U.S Flag every day for 20 years at 0800 every morning and held that salute while the national anthem was played. I saluted the flag every day at sundown when the flag was lowered. Sometimes it was me, putting up the flag.

The U.S Flag was displayed on the quarterdeck of every command I was stationed. It flew over every installation I was stationed or visited. It flew off the back of every ship in port and at the top of the mast underway. I saluted the U.S. Flag when I boarded the ship and I saluted the flag when I left.

There was a flag at every ceremony I attended. Displayed indoors, held outdoors. That flag was saluted by all.

The day I retired, I received a U.S. Flag that was flown over the USS Arizona on December 7 2000. 900 men are still intombed on that ship Mr. Roland.

I am a member of the American Legion now. I proudly hold the U.S Flag while there is a 21 gun salute when a veteran is buried. The surviving members of the veterans family is presented with the flag covering his coffin. It is the last thing they receive. I expect my family members to get my last flag someday.

So, yes, honoring the American Flag is the very least I can expect from our next Commander In Chief.

And yes, I care about this silly stuff. Hundreds of thousands of men have died for this flag, and honoring it is important to me.

Thank you very much for

Thank you very much for your service and I know your ideas about the flag are not silly at all.  I feel it too and have every day of my adult life.  We know the left generally has no sense of value toward what it stands for and the sacrifice amassed over generations.  The left is what it is and that is wrong and void of some most important ideals that go to faith, appreciation and freedom.  I vacilate between engaging them and ignoring their self-centered ignorance.

But you, sir, are a winner in every sense of the word and stand for something.  And you do stand up to the wave of indulgent lefties not even close to being all that you are and will never be as long as they base their views on the half lies and outright lies that is the left.

Take heart and know there are many of us.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

Don't thank The Vet. The Vet thanks you all!

Veteran Of The Psychic Wars

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long, where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at, and far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I'm not sure that there's anything left of me

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating up our brains
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

You ask me why I'm weary, why I can't speak to you
You blame me for my silence, say it's time I changed and grew
But the war's still going on, dear, and there's nowhen that I know
And I can't stand forever
I can't say if we're ever gonna be free

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating up our brains
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
My energy is spent at last, and my armor is destroyed
I have used up all my weapons, and I'm helpless and bereaved
Wounds are all I'm made of
Did I hear you say that this is victory?

Don't let these shakes go on, it's time we had a break from it
Send me to the rear
Where the tides of madness swell
And men sliding into hell
Oh please, don't let these shakes go on.

Booooo..Yahaaaa...!!!

Ster.

My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.

Good evening JWF

I haven't given 20 years as you have, But I have saluted the flag  while at attention many times.

Some here don't appreciate this silly stuff but most do. WE also appreciate the devotion and sacrifice of career military service. While you don't see it as a sacrifice, you gave up a lot to serve.

Don't expect those that have never served and attended a military funeral to understand the deep passion involved.

Yes, these things are silly to some, but God said that His word is silly to the world so we are in good company.

Jesus Loves You so much He died for you

Hear, Hear!

Symbols are important, silly or not to others.

Our national symbols are the first recognition of who were are; when they are disrespectd or disregarded it diminishes us.

"You can have Peace or you can have Freedom; just don't count on having both at the same time." - R.A.H

"I'll take the harsh reality of liberty over the illusion of security...everytime!"

Thank you sir.

Of course The Vet personally enjoys Veterans Day because that is when he gets all the presents.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Good evening to you to cocodrie

The Honor Guard offers the last respects of the country to all vets at their funerals, not just military funerals. There is a 21 gun salute, taps is played, and the American Flag is presented to the family.

The Honor Guard does it as a duty to their country. Voluntarily, without pay, in all weather. I am 46, the young one. These are old vets in their 60's, 70's, & 80's out there in the rain and snow.

And the families of the deceased appreciate it.

 Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Pi

My POV might be a little more liberal than republican, but I call it the way I see it.

As far as I know there was only one Clinton investigation. Back then things were good and people could afford to talk about a blue dress stained with Arkansauce

The final two years of Bush, we were fighting two wars and the economy was going into the tank, sorry but there are much more important things to worry about since the Dems all saw the same evidence as the GOP

The Dems just wanted to finger point when things went south.

WHOA! WHOA! WOW! HOLY COW!

January 30, 2009 - 04:22 ET by JWF

Odd that you would see the name Hitler and go from there straight to Obama. What is crawling through the dark recesses of your brain? Mrbill never said Obama.

Oh, and nice straw man there. Let me knock it over. No one said Obama is invading Poland. Done.

Speaking of President Obama, our Commander in Chief. Looks there have been some military deaths since he started running this war. Still opposed to it Mr. Opposed the War Boy Scout Honor Badge? Come on now. President Hopeychange is running the show now. http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/

  1. Wanting America/The President/The Military to fail in a war is treasonous and rational people are enraged by such statements.

  2. Calling other behavior treasonous diminishes the word and should be roundly condemned by rational people.

  3. You want to oppose this war, fine. Just don't wear it like it's a boy scout badge. It is not some kind of couragous behavior.

  4. Congress declares war. Not the President. They did so in Oct of 2002. You had time prior to that, and then another 4 full months until Mar 2003 to voice your opposition. Once the troops hit the ground, and most especially once they are under fire, it is no longer the time to voice opposition. America should speak with one voice after that.

  5. The only acceptable dissent after the troops come under fire is how we should best achieve victory. Sen. McCain & Gen. Petraeus were good examples.

   6. You have a problem with the war or reasons for entry thereof. Take it up with the 535 members of Congress. They have had 6 years to withdraw funding. They have declined to do so every day of those 6 years. Why? Because they know doing so would diminish the respect of the United States on the world stage and would be Political Suicide. Don't bring your whining about the war here. We are seriously tired of the whining after 6 years and most especially when victory is within sight.

7. This is a right leaning site that draws conservatives like flies to honey. If you come here with what you PERCEIVE to be a valid argument from the left, you will have your weewee shoved in your watch pocket. Look at the motto, it is "COMBATING liberal media bias"

8. There are no valid arguments from the left. Keep your watch pocket empty and take some motrin. It's gonna hurt.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

JWF?

I'm sorry but I'm not really sure what i am catching flak for? Didn't I just mention that the Dems saw the same evidence as Bush and are finger pointing only when things went south?

The wife of the previous President, HRC, was convinced of WMD, as were Kerry and Ted Kennedy.

All that backing off, having been privy to the same intelligence reports as the President was a case study in disingenuousness.

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

I lost count

There were so many investigations into the Clinton WH.  Don't know how old you are, maybe you're just too young to remember...Troopergate, Whitewater, Rose Law Firm...

The  Republican Congress spent $65 million -- 65 million in taxpayer dollars -- and he was cleared on every accusation.  The only thing they were even able to charge  him with was lying under oath about getting a BJ in the Oral Office.

Pi

You would think to risk it all he could have picked some hotter women.

Monica Lewinski and Paula Jones...bleeech.

He had my vote

"and he was cleared on

"and he was cleared on every accusation."

An outright lie.  He was never 'cleared'.  Prosecution was not initiated because of a lack of evidence, not a lack of guilt.  Something about witnesses who died at convenient moments or fled the country.  I like this one:

John Huang.  This snake later slithered back into the country from his hiding place in China after the Clinton presidency was over and plead guilty to making illegal campaign contributions to Clinton, which Clinton knew full well at the time were illegal.  Of course, the DNC waited until AFTER the election that was tainted by these funds to return the money!!!  Crooks one and all.

Some people think it much worse.  They ask, "Why did foreign nationals contribute millions in illegal campaign contributions to Clinton?  What quid-pro-quo did they seek?"  Many think the answer is Huang was a spy for China.

Shawn...

As far as I know there was only one Clinton investigation.

Shawn, my good friend, maybe it only seemed like one investigation because the relentless scrutiny started when he took office and continued unabated--with numerous sub-parts and peripheral inquiries--for the next eight years.  Clinton was by far the most investigated president in American history.

Jer

When war comes, it is too

When war comes, it is too late to field new equipment.  Rumsfeld was persecuted for making a very prescient statement to a room full of troops at a town hall.  THat statement was "You don't go to war with the army you want, you go to war with the army you have."

The military we took into Iraq in 2003 was the military that was built upon the bones constructed by Ronald Wilson Reagen in the 1980's.  THe armor, aircraft, and soldier equipment was nearly universally fielded during that time.

Major field units had been removed from the force structure in the 1990's under WJBC to the point that the force we took in was a shadow of the force desired.  But you go to war with that which you have, not what you want.

You will note that Obama yesterday released his defense acquisition policy for his administration. Do you think "THe One" is increasing fielding of key items that will be used in the next war?  Or do you think he is cutting?

One thinkg is certain.  When we are forced to invade "Country X" in the future, it will be immeasurably harder due to democrat policies which view the military as a dumping ground and portable jobs program full of future victims.

Can't argue with much of what you say

But I can say that the army we went into Afghanistan with was Bill Clinton's Army. And that army did spectacularly!

So did the army in Iraq

You know, the one that was descending on Baghdad so quickly, they had to wait for support lines to catch up.

And, it could be argued that Iraq is in much better shape than Afghanistan today.

"This
liberal would be all about socialize -- uh, uh, would be about
basically taking over and the government running all of your companies."-Maxine Waters 2008

Yeah, I gotta say that I

Yeah, I gotta say that I was infuriated every time I heard liberals like Kerry hammer away at a supposedly uncaring Bush administration because the troops did not have a certain item in the field.

And the press never followed it back with the appropriate question of "But Senator Kerry, you continually voted against items such as the M2, M1, and other key items that you now excoriate the adminstration for lacking, why is that?"

Regarding your post that Iraq is better off than Afghanstan, I concur and note that Iraq will be and always was more key to the defeat of islamo fascism than Afghanistan will be.

Absolutely, BD

And to be fair, our goal in Afghanistan was different than the goal in Iraq. In Iraq, we wanted to oust saddam, root out any terrorist havens, and engage the enemy there, not here. In addition, we wanted to set a stable govt. that could be an ally for us there, as well as a buffer between Israel and Iran and Syria.

In afghanistan, we wanted to remove the Taliban, and get obl. That said, I don't know if a surge in Afghanistan will accomplish what we want to accomplish there, (hell I wish the 0 would elaborate on what the goal is there now). If the goal is to get obl, then we will necessarily have to go into Pakistan, somehthing the 0 has already said he is willing to do. That is not a pleasant prospect.

"This
liberal would be all about socialize -- uh, uh, would be about
basically taking over and the government running all of your companies."-Maxine Waters 2008

I dispute that the army

I dispute that the army that did so spectacularly in Iraq/Afghanistan had anything to do with Bill Clintons policies, rather it SURVIVED them.

We used a handful of SF ODA in Afghanistan that was using equipment that went into R&D and POM Cycle during the RWR and GHWB administrations.  Some of it was fielded during the WJBC administration but it had already gone through its testing and had been purchased prior.  No major systems that I am aware of was POM'd during Clinton years.

THere was not a single weapons system used by these ODA that was developed under the Clinton Administration.

Smart Bombs?  Nope.

F-18's?  Nope.

C-17's to deliver them to the battlefield?  Nope.

Hell, even their M-4 carbines dated to development and acquisition to when I was a captain in 1990.

As I said, those ODA SURVIVED the Clinton administration, and did not prosper under it.  In fact, I recall having to cancel unit training during the Clinton Administration because my training funds had been siphoned off to pizza delivery missions in Rwanda which we did not even participate in.

THe Clintons years were BAD.  And we were only now recovering from them.  Now with "The One" we are heading back into the dark forest of decline.

Pi314: Wish to give up on

Pi314:

Wish to give up on this subject as well?

After all, I could discuss Clintons optempo vs funding considerations, or the fact that he removed the two last flag structures from the US Army which we have desperately been attempting to rebuild for the past five years.  But I guess that rebuilding effort is now over since "THe One" is now in power.

Lots of money for "Stimulous" but no money to put two divisions back into the structure.

So says the sex offender with a sex offender sign...

Isn't he just special?

September 27, 2008 - 17:54 ET by JWF

The armistice which Saddam Hussein agreed to, required him to demolish all weapons of mass destruction along with their programs. He did not do that.

The Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq signed by a majority of the United States Congress on October 2 of 2002 listed 23 points of which only 1 pertained to WMD's.

Hello Obama? WAKE UP. the war was quick and easy. Remember that whole banner thing on that floaty ship thing with whatshisname the President. Mission Accomplished. Yes we were initially greeted as liberators. Sorry the occupation and pacification has taken so long but then the average is 9 to 11 years.

Hello Obama? We found lots of WMD's if anyone would have bothered to report them. Weekly Standard has a whole list. ASK!

It is not about whether you wear a flag pin or not. It is the reason you gave when you took it off.

Obama said there are better ways to show your patriotism.

I contend that honoring the flag is the highest form of patriotism and there can be NO better way.

Also, the flag on my American Legion uniform, Obama and Martin, you listening? IT'S SEWN ON!

Just like many military, police, fireman, and other life protecting professions.

Oh Gawd, please yes, please keep making this an issue, because all you are doing is getting yourself mired even deeper in the mud.

blocked????

All the dem congress did for those two years was from investigative committees to inquire about Bush's actions the previous six years. It is no coincidence that a growing, robust economy went in the tank in the fall of '06.

Yes, pi, the economy was growing at Clinton administration levels even after 9/11 and two wars in two countries. At first sight of a dem controlled congress, in the tank it went.

Can someone find the 12 year old AOLer a dictionary?

The boy needs schooling

The 12 year old AOLer AKA the boy wants it both ways. It wants people tried under international law AND under U.S Code.

You can't have it both ways.  It is called double jeopardy. But then the boy would not know anything about that.

Only signatories to an internation treaty can claim a grievance UNDER the treaty.

What is international law?

International law, commonly referred to as "public international law," regulates relations and activities between nations. It also contains rules regarding the operations of international organizations, such as the United Nations. In addition, it governs state treatment of individuals and juridical persons (i.e., non-natural persons, such as a corporation, association or partnership).

International law is distinct from "private international law" (also known as "conflict of laws"), which regulates dealings between individuals and juridical persons from different nations.

Note that international law refers to nations as sovereign states. In this context, sovereign states does not mean states within a nation. Furthermore, in the United States, individual states lack authority to engage in international dealings. The U.S. Constitution explicitly denies states this power, and vests it with the federal government. (U.S. Const. Art. I, § 10).

International law encompasses several areas, such as international trade, the creation and dissolution of states, use of force (regarding when a state may initiate force against another state), armed conflict ("humanitarian law", which regulates how a state conducts an armed conflict), human rights (which are set forth in several international instruments, such as the Declaration of Human Rights), refugees, crimes, environment, labor, the sea, air space, and postal services.

Show Extended Summary
How is international law enforced?

International law differs from domestic law. In the United States, the federal and state governments enforce domestic American law. However, in terms of international law, no government or international organization enforces international law. Although the United Nations Security Council may pass measures authorizing enforcement, the enforcement entity envisioned (Art. 43) to carry out such measures never materialized due to the failure of member states to provide the necessary resources (such as troops). (An enforcement body should not be confused with existing United Nations peacekeeping forces, whose function is to maintain peace and security, not to enforce breaches of international law.)

How are international disputes resolved?

International disputes sometimes result in armed conflict between states, despite the prohibition of aggressive force (meaning, force not used in self-defense) (United Nations Charter, Art. 2(4)). However, most disputes between states are settled peacefully. Pacific settlement is often reached by diplomatic means, whereby states voluntarily comply with international law amidst pressure from other states. Another peaceful settlement mechanism is submission of the matter by the disputing states to an international tribunal, court, or arbitration.

What are the sources of international law?

  • International agreements
  • Customary law
  • jus cogens (meaning "strong law" or "compelling law")
  • resolutions passed by international organizations (in some circumstances)
  • to an extent, decisions of international tribunals, courts, and arbitrations (depending upon the underlying agreement to arbitrate)
  • some general principles of law
  • judicial decisions and academic treatises (but only as auxiliary sources)

International agreements (such as treaties, conventions, covenants and protocols) between states are the oldest sources of international law. The earliest known treaty dates back to 1380 B.C., to an alliance between the Hittite King Suppiluliuma I and Aziras of Amurru (a North Syrian province of the Egyptian empire).

Customary law is law developed out of a practice by states of adhering to a particular custom out of a sense of obligation.

Jus cogens describes peremptory norms of international law from which no derogation by treaty is permitted. (Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, Arts. 53, 64). For example, nations may not contract out of the law forbidding slavery.

In special circumstances, international organizations can create binding law. Resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter may be binding on member states (Arts. 41, 42, 48, 49). An example of such a resolution is one that orders sanctions against a state in response to a breach of international law which threatens international peace and security.

Opinions issued by international tribunals (including courts and arbitration) comprise law to the extent that they are binding upon the states-parties to the proceeding. Such decisions are not binding on non-parties, but may serve to reveal the composition of international law to other states and tribunals.

Other sources of international law may be inferred from those available to the International Court of Justice (the "ICJ," also known as "the World Court," the main judicial organ of the United Nations). In addition to the sources already mentioned, the World Court may rely on general legal principles "as recognized by civilized nations" in deducing international law (Statute of the ICJ, Art. 38). The Court may also draw upon, as secondary sources, "judicial decisions and teachings of the most highly qualified publicists of the various nations" in determining the rules of international law (Statute of the ICJ, Art. 38)

It is not up to the law professors to determine the legality of waterboarding. It is up to the Attorney General of the United States.

The current AG, Michael Mukasey, has addressed the issue.

a. It is not currently being used.

b. Should it be needed, it is up to the CIA director and the AG to determine the legality.

c. Should it ever be used, news of its use certainly will not be broadcast at NB.

Seal of the United States Department of Justice The Attorney General

Washington, D.C.

January 29,2008

The Honorable Patrick J. Leahy United States Senate Washington, DC 20510

Dear Chairman Leahy:

I write in response to your letter of January 23, 2008, concerning interrogation techniques, and in anticipation of my testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee tomorrow. During my tenure as Attorney General, I have attempted to foster an atmosphere of candor and cooperation with this Committee. This letter is offered in that spirit.

Your letter, which was signed by several of your colleagues, follows up on a request you made to me in a letter dated October 23,2007. I responded to that inquiry in writing on October 30, 2007, explaining that I could not render an opinion about the legality of any specific techniques because "I have not been briefed on techniques used in any classified interrogation program conducted by any government agency." I assured you, however, that "if confirmed I will review any coercive interrogation techniques currently used by the United States Government and the legal analysis authorizing their use to assess whether such techniques comply with the law. If, after such a review, I determine that any technique is unlawful, I will not hesitate to so advise the President and will rescind or correct any legal opinion of the Department of Justice that supports use of the technique."

Since that time, I have conducted a thorough and careful review of the Department's legal analysis concerning the techniques that are currently authorized for use in the Central Intelligence Agency's program for interrogating high-value al Qaeda terrorists. I have kept the commitment that I made to you and to this Committee, and have concluded that the interrogation techniques currently authorized in the CIA program comply with the law.

Your January 23,2008, letter also asks if "the use of waterboarding as an interrogation technique [is] illegal under U.S. law, including treaty obligations." When I was asked the same question at my confirmation hearing and in your October 23, 2007, letter, I noted that I had not been provided information concerning any classified interrogation program, and that therefore "there [was] a real issue as to whether the techniques presented and discussed at the hearing and in your letter are even part of any program of questioning detainees."

During the course of my review, I have been briefed on the CIA interrogation program. A limited set of methods is currently authorized for use in that program. I have been authorized to disclose publicly that waterboarding is not among those methods. Accordingly, waterboarding is not, and may not be, used in the current program. There is a defined process by which any new method is proposed for authorization. That process would begin with the CIA Director's determination that the addition of the technique was required for the program. Then, the Attorney General would have to determine that the use of the technique is lawful under the particular conditions and circumstances proposed. Finally, the President would have to approve of the use of the technique as requested by the CIA Director and as deemed lawful by the Attorney General.

I understand that you and some other members of the Committee may feel that I should go further in my review, and answer questions concerning the legality of waterboarding under current law. I understand the strong interest in this question, but I do not think it would be responsible for me, as Attorney General, to provide an answer. As I explained to the Committee during my confirmation process, as a general matter, I do not believe that it is advisable to address difficult legal questions, about which reasonable minds can and do differ, in the absence of concrete facts and circumstances.

The principle that one should refrain from addressing difficult legal questions in the absence of concrete facts and circumstances has even more force as to this question. That is because any answer I give could have the effect of articulating publicly—and to our adversaries—the limits and contours of generally worded laws that define the limits of a highly classified interrogation program. Indeed, I understand that a number of Senators articulated this very concern in the fall of 2006, in the course of defeating an amendment that would have expressly prohibited waterboarding.

If this were an easy question, I would not be reluctant to offer my views on this subject. But, with respect, I believe it is not an easy question. There are some circumstances where current law would appear clearly to prohibit the use of waterboarding. Other circumstances would present a far closer question.

Reasonable people can disagree, and have disagreed, about these matters. That is not surprising: They involve application of generally worded legal provisions to complex factual situations in an area of the highest national interest. It is precisely because the issue is so important, and the questions so difficult, that I, as the Attorney General, should not provide answers absent a set of circumstances that call for those answers. Those circumstances do not present themselves today, and may never present themselves in the future.

I understand that I will be asked questions by the Committee about this topic tomorrow. I will answer those questions to the best of my ability, within the limits that I have described. I recognize that those limits may make my task today more difficult for me personally. But it is my job as Attorney General to do what I believe the law requires and what is best for the country, not what makes my life easier.

Despite disagreements we may have on this issue, I hope that the Committee will respect my judgment on this matter, and I hope and expect that we will find common ground on many other matters of great importance to this Committee and to the country—including, most importantly, our shared belief in the mission of the Department of Justice and the great work of its employees.

Yours sincerely, Michael B. Mukasey Signature of Michael B. Mukasey

I am assured that the Attorney General under President Bush made a very similar call with very similar results.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Aww yeah...

And don't you WISH that the AG determined what is legal and what's not.

But he doesn't.

Where is the law written

that defines waterboarding as torture? You throw out conjecture and link to opinions. Can you prove this, or not. Nothing you have linked thus far accomplishes you mission.

You have your assignment, now run along.

Roosevelt's speech before Congress Dec 8th 1941 --- REVISED By the Obama Administration.

March 27, 2009 - 03:23 ET by JWF

Yesterday, December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately slapped with a waffle by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its Government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced molecularly separating Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to the Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of contingency operations or meaniness by manmade disasters.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the meaniness was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. The meaniness yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. Very many American lives have been dealt a bad day. In addition, American ships have been reported let fill with water on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched a meaniness against Malaya.

Last night Japanese forces slapped with a waffle Hong Kong.

Last night Japanese forces slapped with a waffle Guam.

Last night Japanese forces slapped with a waffle the Philippine Islands.

Last night the Japanese slapped with a waffle Wake Island. This morning the Japanese slapped with a waffle Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a meaniness offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As Commander in Chief of the army and navy I have directed that we try very very hard.

Always will we remember the character of the parade of not nicedness against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated coming ashore without our permission, the American people in their righteous might will try our best through to absolute end of contingency operations. I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only be nice to the uttermost but will make very certain that this form of un-niceness shall never endanger us again.

A not nice situation exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces—with the unbounding determination of our people—we will gain the inevitable happy endings—so help us God. I ask that the Congress declare that since the really not expected and hurty feelings meaniness by Japan on Sunday, December 7, a state of contingency operation has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.

Intellectual dishonesty and boys that have no real response.

I'll explain it.

You claim to disdain personal insults. Yet you engage in the personal attacks of needling and belittlement.

  Example:

A commentor claimed in a post our current president set an outrageous example by attacking a PRIVATE CITIZEN!

You belittled and mocked him with this response -

Rush is a private citizen?!?!
 by pi314
HA!  HAHAahhahhaahHAHHAHahhahhahA!@!@!@#

The fact that you misunderstood the term private citizen did not deter you from openly mocking him with with an internet guffaw. As though he were so far off base as to appear ludicrous to a rational person. He was correct, a public official (Pres. Obama) attacked a private citizen (Rush Limbaugh). But that is beside the point. Your derision stood.

The intellectual dishonesty stems from your disdain for insults, as noted in your post above. Yet you have no qualms about engaging in other forms of Ad Hominem attacks - belittlement, needling, mocking, derision. This allows you to claim the higher moral ground (I do not insult) all the while debasing your opponents. You are fully aware you are insulting your opponents yet you do it anyway.

In addition, mocking your opponents by claiming they made a false statement while not researching the truth of their statements is intellectually dishonest too.

Intellectually dishonest.

  • the advocacy of a position which the advocate knows or believes to be false or misleading
  • the advocacy of a position which the advocate does not know to be true, and has not performed rigorous due diligence to ensure the truthfulness of the position
  • the conscious omission of aspects of the truth known or believed to be relevant in the particular context.
  • Intellectual dishonesty and boys that have no real response 2

    Intellectual dishonesty and ego

    April 5, 2009 - 11:02 ET by JWF

Another example of intellectual dishonesty -

The original post of this thread stated you believed people at the highest level of government should be in jail.

b: to accept as true, genuine, or real <ideals we believe in> <believes in ghosts>
2: to have a firm conviction as to the goodness, efficacy, or ability of something <believe in exercise>
3: to hold an opinion : think <I believe so>

Yet no evidence is offered to back up said belief.

A commenter called you out on what is arguably an inflammatory statement. Inflammatory because no one is currently under indictment or appears to be in danger of being indicted any time in the future. Here is your response -

Glad to see you're eager to participate in the discussion!

Participation requires the actions of at least 2 people. This was a dismissive statement ignoring any arguments that were brought up.

    Sincerely,

    a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

OK OK OK OK OK OK...

Restless1 and JWF have earned themselves "banned" status from my threads.

Neither have anything to offer besides insults, and frankly, I'm tired of trading tit for tat.

If wither of them wish to actually contribute to the discussion then I'l consider answering on a post-by-post basis, as I've been doing with Arrow.

    Otherwise, I wil ignore them.

    Buh BYE

    Good evening pi

IF you didn't show so many tits, you wouldn't get so many tats.

Jesus Loves You so much He died for you

    HAH!!!

Heyyyy... Keep it in yer pants!!!!

How's that banning working for ya pi?

You haven't answered any questions. You have a lot of homework to do. Frankly, you haven't any time to be here.

As for the insults, yeah I've insulted you. It all started when you took to calling all of us ignorant asses with no intellectual capacity. Then you assume you have any standing to call a respected poster an asshole, (do you even have a clue as to where Unsane was this time last year?), then you cry about insults? Toughen up buttercup.

    Intellectual dishonesty and false claims

    April 5, 2009 - 13:28 ET by JWF

Where in the territory of a Party to the conflict, the latter is
satisfied that an individual protected person is definitely suspected
of or engaged in activities hostile to the security of the State, such
individual person shall not be entitled to claim such rights and
privileges under the present Convention [ie GCIV] as would ... be
prejudicial to the security of such State ... In each case, such
persons shall nevertheless be treated with humanity
    (GCIV Article 5)

A Party refers to one of the signotories to the Geneva Convention treaty. Ony Iraq was signatory to the fourth Geneva Convention. And WE HOLD NO IRAQI POW's from the 2nd Gulf War in 2003. Afghanistan and the Taliban. Not signatories. Al Qaeda, not even a government to be a signatory. So they cannot be protected persons. And we do treat all non signatory non protected people humanely. PROVE WE DO NOT.

If there is a question of whether a person is a lawful combatant, he
(or she) must be treated as a POW "until their status has been
    determined by a competent tribunal"
    (GCIII Article 5).

We were having tribunals to determine status of ALL persons in Gitmo. The President of the United States, Barack Obama, has suspended all tribunals for the period of ONE YEAR. Again, all were treated as POW, President Bush ordered the treatment in a Presidential edict.

How does either of those statements PROVE we tortured anyone in any way?

If you desire to make inflammatory statements. BACK THEM UP.

    Sincerely,

    a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Intellectual dishonesty and boys that have no real response 3

Intellectual dishonesty and lots of it.

    April 6, 2009 - 00:09 ET by JWF

The Geneva Conventions only cover signatories TO the various conventions. The Geneva Conventions DID not cover the Taliban who were NOT signatory to it. Nor do the Geneva Conventions cover Al Qaeda who are not affiliated with any Government.

WE are required to honor the Geneva Conventions only when engaged in a war with another SIGNATORY to the Geneva Conventions.

The Geneva Conventions are not law. They are a series of treaties. The are a contractual obligation between nations that have signed the Geneva Conventions.

They do not apply here and ARE NOT PROOF. They only applied to Iraqi POW's during the 2nd Gulf War, and we have no Iraqi POW's currently.

Only signatories to a treaty, any treaty, can claim protection under that treay. That is international law.

We could take any taliban or al qaeda and twist their nuts in a vise and it would not matter one wit when it comes to the Geneva Convention.

George Bush's simple declaration that anyone we capture is by definition an "unlawful combatant" does not a tribunal make.

More intellectual dishonesty. He did not HAVE to declare anything. They were unlawful combatants under the Laws of War.

The phrase "unlawful combatant" does not appear in the Third Geneva Convention (GCIII).[1] However, Article 4 of GCIII does describe categories under which a person may be entitled to POW status; and there are other international treaties that deny lawful combatant status for mercenaries and children. In the United States, the Military Commissions Act of 2006 codified the legal definition of this term and invested the U.S. President with broad discretion to determine whether a person may be designated an unlawful enemy combatant under United States law. *

Did you catch that? The Military Commisions Act of 2006 codified the word NOT GEORGE BUSH.

You are wrong again. Time for the needling to start? More English arse kicking?

"Any alien unlawful enemy combatant is subject to trial by military commission under chapter 47A – Military Commissions (of the Military Commissions Act of 2006 (10 U.S.C. 948a (Section 1, Subchapter I))). The definition of unlawful and lawful enemy combatant is given in Chapter 47A—Military commission: Subchapter I--General provisions: Sec. 948a. Definitions *

Is that right? The definition of unlawful and unlawful enemy combatant is defined by CONGRESS? Well, looks like someone needs to open a BIG OL' CAN of arse kickin's.

How many of those prisoners in Gitmo and Abu Ghraib have been before a tribunal?

ALL OF THEM. They have ALL been before a military judge to determine the status. And a good number have been released. More intellectual dishonesty.

    http://www4.law.corn...

Ah yes, now it is our laws. Which is it? International law or U.S law? You cannot have both. It is called Double Jeopardy.

You linked to United States Code -

    TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 113C Torture

Torture is defined therein - (not your direct link, we have to move up a link - more intellectual dishonesty)

    (1) “torture” means an act committed by a person acting under the color of law specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering (other than pain or suffering incidental to lawful sanctions) upon another person within his custody or physical control;

Severe, I repeat, severe physical or mental pain.

Making someone THINK they are drowning for a few minutes IS NOT TORTURE.

    (2) “severe mental pain or suffering” means the prolonged mental harm caused by or resulting from—

    (A) the intentional infliction or threatened infliction of severe physical pain or suffering;

    (B) the administration or application, or threatened administration or application, of mind-altering substances or other procedures calculated to disrupt profoundly the senses or the personality;

    (C) the threat of imminent death; or

    (D) the threat that another person will imminently be subjected to death, severe physical pain or suffering, or the administration or application of mind-altering substances or other procedures calculated to disrupt profoundly the senses or personality;

Again, making someone THINK they are drowning for a few minutes, NOT TORTURE.

The United States has it's own special attorney, the United States Attorney General. He determines what and what does not fall under legal or illegal definitions that persons in the employ of the United States Government performs. Not intellectually dishonest needlers.

And think about this -- If the WH believed that what they were doing was legal, then why would they have worried that it was going to looked upon as criminal?

Worried? Now we have to be mind readers? We are not here to engage in acts of mind reading to find out how WORRIED people in the White House seem to be.

Why would the White House have brought in lawyers to draft "The Torture Memo" and other CYA documents, in an attempt to prove they were not breaking any laws?

Why do tobacco companies have teams of lawyers? Why does Coca-Cola have teams of lawyers? The government has had a team of lawyers for SINCE 1789. It is called the Office of the United States Attorney. The head guy is called the United States Attorney General. They have an entire building chock full of lawyers whose only job is to ensure ALL DOCUMENTS stemming from the U.S Government are legal.

The Attorney General represents the United States in legal matters generally and gives advice and opinions to the President **

And incidently, why are Woo, Feith and others now backing away from it like a cat from a cold bath...?

I am unable to disprove a negative. How can I find proof of something THAT DOES NOT EXIST. Douglas Feith wrote a book explaining a lot of what went on in the Bush Administration. I am unable to find a single quote of him denouncing the actions taken by the Bush administration when it came to the issue or torture/nontorture.

Who is Woo? This is the top link in google for Woo - http://www.worldofoutlaws.com/

Seriously, who is Woo? Can someone tell me why this Woo guy is? I am tired of doing due research for someone that goes by belief rather than facts.

Maxwell: Everyone shut the (bleep) up. I am in charge of this (bleep) huddle.*

I step out for 3 minutes and we get a liberal turd coming in to stir up the cistern.

NO ONE has ever been prosecuted for waterboarding under the U.S Constitution. The prosecution of Japanese and German prisoners for war crimes including waterboarding was done under special constitutions that were drawn up for the express purpose of prosecuting those war crimes.

The army manual covers only ARMY Personnel. No one else.

Waterboarding was not illegal under the U.S Constitution until the last 2 years. The President of the United States, President Barack Obama, RESERVES the right to use it regardless. He reserves this right because the Constitution of the United States gives him the power to PROTECT it's citizens INCLUDING suspending constitutional rights.

There is no law higher than the Constitution or any other nations founding documents. The Geneva Convention is a TREATY. As such, you may only abide by the Geneva Convention so long as the other guys abide by it. Since the Geneva Convention was drawn up and the United States became a signatory to it, EVERY COUNTRY WE HAVE GONE TO WAR WITH HAS DISREGARDED IT AND TORTURED OUR POW'S.

President Bush explicitly acknowledged captured terrorists were not covered by the Geneva Convention. He did so in a Presidential Proclamation. HE FURTHER STATED WE WILL TREAT ALL PRISONERS AS WE WOULD UNDER THE GENEVA CONVENTION.

If the law is on your side, State the Law.

If the facts are on your side. State the Facts.

    Otherwise, pound the table.

Congress has passed two laws -- the Detainee Treatment Act in 2005 and the Military Commissions Act in 2006 -- that ban the use of harsh interrogation methods and require all U.S. agencies to comply with the Constitution and the Geneva Conventions in their treatment of detainees.

Congress outlawed harsh interrogation techniques but like the pi314 coward they failed to mention waterboarding by name or acton.

The White House said Wednesday that the widely condemned interrogation technique known as waterboarding is legal and that President Bush could authorize the CIA to resume using the simulated-drowning method under extraordinary circumstances.

President Bush said he could still do it.

    http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=30384

And there’s a quirk in President Obama’s orders:  they don’t bind him.  That’s right: the President isn’t bound by his own executive order. Like President Bush did, he can authorize additional interrogation methods.  (According to one intelligence community source, Obama’s lawyers have admitted this to be true.)

President Obama issued an Executive Order banning torture techniques. Um, hello? He can just as easily issue another Executive Order authorising torture when needed whenever he wants.

He wore the love of his country on his sleeve.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

Cut & Run Obama says of a war we started and are winning -

Let me be clear: There is no military solution in Iraq. There never was," he said. "'The best way to protect our security and to pressure Iraq's leaders to resolve their civil war is to immediately begin to remove our combat troops. Not in six months or one year – now.

Nah, won't pay that price, not for that foe, not to help that friend, too hard, screw you liberty, screw you and the horse you rode in on and the flag he was carrying.

    Standing Order

    April 18, 2008 - 00:46 ET by JWF

Hello. It is I, Mr. American Flag*, 20 year Navy vet, current American Legion Color Guard. I have left standing orders to be contacted first on all flag related matters.

Title 18, Part 1, Ch. 33, Section 700 has been struck down by the Supreme Court on 1st amendment grounds. That was for defiling the flag on free speech grounds however, maintaining on the ground may still stand. Oh, and flags made from duct tape count.
    (a)

    (1) Whoever knowingly mutilates, defaces, physically defiles, burns, maintains on the floor or ground, or tramples upon any flag of the United States shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for not more than one year, or both.

    (b) As used in this section, the term “flag of the United States” means any flag of the United States, or any part thereof, made of any substance, of any size, in a form that is commonly displayed.

Maine has it's own uniform flag law.

    § 254. Mutilation
No person shall publicly or openly mutilate, deface, defile, defy, trample upon, or vy word or act cast contempt upon any such flag, standard, color, ensign or shield. Any violation of this section shall be a Class E crime.

This is also unenforcable as it probably violates the 1st amendment.

So what this college student was doing was not against the law.

More important, mutilating a Mexican Flag on U.S soil, now that can land you in jail mister!

does a person standing for the national anthem automatically represent love of country and vice versa? First of all, it is the law. Second, no that's it, it is the law.

Security people, ok, allowed to do their job. Concessions, no, do the best you can to stand and face the flag without setting the place on fire. Taking pictures as a photographer allowed. Don't interfere though. Combat photographers, not a fair comparison, they are expressly forbidden to pick up a gun.

No one is asking for love, it is called respect. Respect for the symbol of the United States and all who have died for her.

Another Democrat - another slap in the face of the military.

    February 2, 2009 - 15:05 ET by JWF

Should we expect more from a rank amateur?

    First Marine Band Presidential Performances
    1801

Since its founding in 1798, the Marine Band's primary mission has been to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Whether performing for South Lawn arrival ceremonies, State Dinners, receptions, or accompanying famous entertainers, Marine Band musicians appear at the White House more than 300 times annually.

    White House Debut

Every President of the United States except George Washington has heard the music of the Marine Band and all have expressed enthusiastic support for the band. The Marine Band made its White House debut on New Year’s Day 1801 at a reception given by President and Mrs. John Adams. Since that time, the Marine Band has furnished music for every Chief Executive at official functions at the White House and for other State occasions.

    Inaugural Debut

On March 4, 1801, the Marine Band performed for Thomas Jefferson’s inaugural and has performed for every Presidential inaugural since that time. Jefferson has been referred to as the "godfather" of the Marine Band, and it was he who gave the band the title "The President’s Own."

July 4, 1801, marked the first Independence Day celebration in the "President’s House." This was the first time a body of troops was reviewed by the Commander in Chief at his residence in Washington. Margaret Baynard Smith, wife of the publisher of the National Intelligencer, wrote in a letter to her sister, "Martial music soon announced the approach of the Marine Corps of Captain Burrows who, in due military form, saluted the President, accompanied by the President’s March played by an excellent band attached to the corps."

A visitor at one of President Jefferson’s receptions remembered that "an exquisite band of music played at intervals martial, patriotic, and enlivening airs, which reverberated through the spacious dome." One of those "enlivening airs" was "To Anacreon in Heaven," first sung at the White House on July 4, 1806, by a "Mr. Cutting." Eight years later this well-known melody was given new words by Francis Scott Key and became very popular as "The Star-Spangled Banner."

    First Inaugural Ball

In 1809, the Marine Band performed for the inaugural of James Madison and, that evening, its music opened the first Inaugural Ball. Music under the Madisons became a vital element of their hospitality. The Marine Band played frequently at various events as it did on the New Year’s Day in 1811 described by Catherine Mitchell: "When we reach’d the grand entrance the sound of sweet music entered our ears...Upon entering the spacious hall we beheld on one side a number of musicians seated round a table, on different instruments, playing enlivening airs for the entertainment of the company."

On Sept. 6, 1825, the Marine Band performed for a celebration honoring the birthday of the Marquis de Lafayette. President John Quincy Adams arose and proposed to him the first toast in the White House. President Adams was responsible for another major change in White House social customs when he brought dancing to the White House on Dec. 15, 1828, to music by the Marine Band.

    "Hail to the Chief"

"Hail to the Chief," with its preceding fanfare known as "Ruffles and Flourishes," is traditionally played to announce the arrival of the President at State functions. Possibly derived from an old Gaelic air, "Hail to the Chief" was used in James Sanderson’s musical play of 1812, The Lady of the Lake. It appears in a gallant boating scene honoring the highland chieftain, Sir Roderick Dhu. The song was already very popular when the Marine Band played it from a barge for the opening of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal on July 4, 1828, in the presence of President John Quincy Adams.

President John Tyler is believed to be the first to use "Hail to the Chief" as the official Presidential honors. "Hail to the Chief" had been played in the White House under Presidents Jackson and Van Buren, but it did not become the official Presidential honors until First Lady Julia Tyler instructed the Marine Band to play it whenever the President made an official appearance. President Tyler also instituted weekly public concerts on the White House grounds, a tradition that continued on Saturday evenings from spring to fall until the administration of Herbert Hoover. In 1856 President Franklin Pierce approved legislation allowing the band extra pay for playing "on the grounds of the President and the Capitol."

my thoughts on Obama and the gaffes the MSM overlooks.

No. It is Obama's problem with the military that is scary. He is making Kerry look like a true patriot. His gaffes when it comes to the flag and military are laughable.

    1. The flag pin: he removed his flag pin because it is a substitute for true patriotism? Honoring the flag is the highest form of patriotism. It is the symbol of our country. It flies at every embassy & military installation around the world. The United States flag is the last thing a veteran receives before he is put in the ground.

    2. Hand over his heart: there is a picture of him failing to place his hand over his heart during the playing national anthem whilst the flag is displayed. Another issue of patriotism? Uh, IT'S THE LAW! The flag code is part of the laws of this country.

    3. He says we are "air raiding villages and killing civilians": apparently his knowledge of the military stops at WWII. We have made amazing strides in precision guided munitions. I have been retired six years and I am amazed. They are getting so good that there are efforts to make them smaller now. So our troops can be acrosss the street when a house with insurgents is hit, for example. They can be closer and therefore able to rush in and mop up. This country takes extreme efforts to minimize civilian casualties. The only reason civilians are killed, I suspect, is because the enemy takes cover by mixing in with them.

    4. He wants to invade our friends (Pakistan) and talk to our enemies (Iran) : Do I need to expound on that?

    5. His latest gaffe. "And as a consequence, they didn't have enough ammunition, they didn't have enough humvees. They were actually capturing Taliban weapons, because it was easier to get Taliban weapons than it was for them to get properly equipped by our current commander in chief." : For one thing, an army never has enough vehicles, ships & planes. Congress pays for those, not the CinC. Scrounging weapons off the enemy dead? That borders on a lie. He is the only one on the planet making this extraordinary claim. Why is he not being called to back this up?

The president is the man in charge of the military. This guy is not ready to be an entry level enlisted boot.

If you claim that waterboarding WAS* illegal and people should be indicted based on international law or U.S Code. You better be able to back it up. No one is currently under indictment nor under investigation. Nor is there any credible talk of investigations or indictments.

It was LEGAL and to make accusations against people saying it was not is inflammatory, partisan, and a LIE.

The pederast pi314 THINKS he can get away with baseless accusations and slander simply because he says he BELIEVES it.

Well, I BELIVE pi314 is a pederast and a sexual deviant that preys on our young. And I BELIEVE he is a coward as well as an arab apologist.

And just what "great work" would that be?

You mean spamming this thread with post after post, all spewing the same off-topic ad hominum attacks, to the point that anyone who actually wants to debate the isssues -- as some here do -- have to wade through the verbal sewer he has created to find actual content?

Is that the "great work" you mean?

We obviously have opposing views on his posts.

But yes, they are the "great work" I was referring to. Are you havin' a bad day pi? Cheer up in knowing how much entertainment you are providing here. Seriously.

    Rexdraconim Enters the Fray

Stand back everybody...the long winded one has arrived!

After days of this spectacle (and my own low ratings) I thought I would give this a shot.  I have a different approach, one both subjective and verbose.  We baked plenty of cinnamon rolls and have a few gallons of sun tea, fresh milk and homemade soda ready for the spectators.  So hunker down and listen to one ol' man's two cents.  Or completely disregard this post...enjoy the refreshments.  :)

One of the stated purposes of NB is to expose the liberal bias in the media.  An additional purpose would be and is the dissemination and promotion of ideas; social, political and others (bread, ports, etc.)

As NB is a form of media, studying and drawing conclusions as to the above purposes, forming ideas as to content and biases, expanding all users abilities to learn from and identify bias or attributes of opposing political ideologues is of benefit to all.

Like some other posters, I have had some need to address the center of this forum, yet I have been able to realize that there is little or no benefit in doing so on their terms.  Frankly, there is not the slightest chance that the center of the debate will accept any point I make. My references would be, in their eyes, inadequate, my interpretation of a reference, in their eyes, incorrect. In addition to this, if I pushed a point I would be subject to derision, disrespect and patronizing condescension. While I have thick skin, I don't needlessly self-abuse; I only fight when it matters.  I am able to recognize a person who has firmly planted beliefs and opinions and I can understand and live with that.  Their beliefs are based on their perceptions, education, experiences and beliefs, just like anyone's are.

I never think that I am going to change someone's politics; I merely offer my own perspective and share with them my humanity.  Sometimes I am able to make people take out their beliefs and look them over.  Sometimes they change their minds.  But I don't think that I am going to achieve those things, guaranteed.  By offering a counterpoint to an opposing view, we offer an undecided or less entrenched person more data from which to base their own political direction.

I want to offer these things for the record, for this post and my future here at NB, however long that may be.

    • If my beliefs are challenged or even insulted, I will not name call.  I am not in grade school. Thrown tomatoes do not give us the excuse to lose our dignity. "Stoic" is an unfortunate casualty of the modern era.
    • If my views are challenged or questioned in the same way they have been at an earlier time, I will answer again, without animosity, as best I can.  I will not say "I have already answered that." I am happy for the chance to engage again.  Life contains many instances where we will be endlessly challenged through repetition.
    • If I say I will answer a person's response, then I will do so, as soon as I can and as completely as I can, without animosity. I will not blow you off, even if you pose an awkward question.
    • I will not consider a political opponent stupid or evil.  They may prove themselves to be, but I do not equate disagreement with me alone as justification of someone's stupidity or darkness.
    • I will never laugh at someone in a debate.  I will not laugh at their ideas or beliefs.  I may think them wrong, or less than my own, but laughter at another human being without laughing at oneself first is one of the primary signs of a person lacking respect for themselves and others.  Laughing as a weapon or distraction is cheap and patronizing.  Remember: no one likes to be ridiculed, patronized or mocked.  In the words of the Duke, "I don't do these things to others and I expect the same in return."  "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" makes for good neighbors, Christian or not.
    • I will not utilize "bumper sticker"responses.  I will give the most complete, honest and respectful answer I can.  Arguments and ideas take time and effort to develop.  The burden of understanding rests on both the speaker and the listener.  They must honestly seek to understand and to be understood to the other.
    • I will keep to the high ground, even in the face of the lowest common denominator of human behavior: rudeness.
    • I will foster the spirit of camaraderie, humor and hospitality, as much as I can.  If I tease, it will be friendly, gentle and directed at myself and my own silly existence just as much as it is directed at another.
    • I will apologize, humbly, when I have failed as a decent human being to uphold myself with kindness, generosity and in a civilized manner. When I apologize, it will be for the benefit of the person wronged, not myself.  I will not qualify an apology; being wrong is being wrong. I may ask for the right to explain, and if granted, I will explain. The person whom I wronged decides if the apology is adequate, not me.  I will not apologize to placate, I will not apologize for what I believe and I will not apologize for apologizing.
    • I realize that even the use of references is not absolute.  All data, every source, is subject not only to the perceptions, experiences, education and beliefs of the person creating the reference or gathering the data but also that the person citing said reference is also using their own filters.
    • Bottom Line:  I will not behave in a boorish manner. I may be boring, but never boorish. If we act on the same level as our opponents, we are no better than they are.  To meet fire with fire is one thing; to engage in the very behavior that makes them our enemy is not only foolish, but self-defeating.

Having said all that, I will say this: Manners are important.  They can let society move more easily and smoothly.  In the modern era, it has become fashionable to take the position that rudeness somehow demonstrates individuality, strength and freedom.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  To keep a level head, a calm voice, maintain your dignity, treat others gently and keep a rational, realist perspective is to be in control of yourself, and self-control is true strength.  Anyone who has worked with large, unruly groups or has had to deal with confrontational situations knows this: calm gets results.  The well-mannered make for better neighbors.  we all lose our cool sometimes, but it important to always be diligently self-aware.

Part (not a large part, but a significant part) of what brings me to Conservatism is how my people are treated by folks of other political persuasions.  My experience has been that Conservatives afford us better treatment and less judgment than others.  They have also made better neighbors, respecting our rights, keeping their property tidy, paying their bills, conducting themselves with decorum, being kinder, more generous and helpful compared to our experiences with others.

I was not raised in a political party.  I was raised in an environment which embraced the idea of accepting and evaluating on what something is, not what we want it to be.  Based on this, my evaluations are based on my experience. Others may have had different experiences, but I must use my own existence as the primary measure of my existence.  In other words, as only I can truly know me, only I can truly be responsible for me.  I am happy to hear others, to engage the world around me, but in the case of a tie, my own experience will be the tie-breaker.

Having stated quite a bit about who I am, what I believe and where I am coming from, I am now entering the fray.  I have stated what I will and will not do.  the way, from my point of view, to carry out my purpose in commenting on this forum is to select a subject, for study, to investigate manners in relation to ideology.  I will study that subject by gathering data as fairly as possible and them posting, later, a full disclosure and the results of that study.

Perhaps this study will be of value to someone, perhaps not.  This is my own necessary first step into this debate.

    The proposed study:

The primary subject of this study will be the comments of the poster Pi314.  This not an evaluation of the person, as such, but more a study of the connection between conduct and ideology. In this sampling, this subject will represent a category of Liberal/Democrats.

The secondary subjects of this study will be comments of other posters, of varying types and degrees of political ideology.again, these are not evaluations of the persons, but again the connection of conduct and ideology. In this sampling, these subjects (more than a dozen) will represent additional Liberal/Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Conservatives, Liberals, Democrats, Mouseketeers and any other variety that the study discloses.  The political ideologies will only be self-defined ones on the part of the poster through comments or bio; political labels will not be applied beacause of content.

Raw Demographic Origin Data for the Primary Subject:

    • Pi314 has been a member of NB for 43 weeks 4 Days
    • self-declared liberal/democrat
    • family man (wife, daughter)
    • lives in N.J. has ties to NYC
    • declared self as Sicilian
    • American citizen
    • owns a shotgun
    • helps around the house (helps wife cook)
    • helps daughter in Girl Scouts
    • non-vegetarian
    • no prior military service
    • 54 years old
    • male

This information was garnered from comments and is included only as demographic identifiers.  I will update this as my staff wades through 1200+ posts.

Based on this data, I would have to say that there is nothing negatively or positively exceptional; just seems like a standard American.  "Regular Joe" type.

Raw data for secondary subjects to be provided as necessary and available.

Comments to be included in this study will be found in the 17 blogs/forums tracked to Pi314 at this date.  The cut off time for these comments will be 08:24 AM MDT, April 07, 2009.  Once the initial data is gathered, we will be happy to amend with posts up to a new date. But we have to start somewhere.

Question: Is there a correlation between manners and political ideology?

Hypothesis: A significant number of Liberals are condescending, patronizing, disrespectful, hypocritical, elitist and are generally boorish.  The behavior of many, not all, of their behavior as a group is parallel to that one guest you have at your dinner party who keeps partaking of alcohol beyond socialization, who, once the supply of booze is exhausted, drives quickly to the liquor store to resupply.  The guest grows less and less reasonable, more combative and continues to escalate the disrespect, insulting and patronization of other guests, always promoting their cherished beliefs as the Ultimate Truth.  This study further will seek to discover if this failure to engage in intellectually honest, polite and respectful debate is applicable to Liberals in general; is the polite, well spoken Liberal the rule or the exception?

Secondary Hypothesis:  When confronting the "drunken guest" political situation, there are several responses, including taking sides, inappropriate frustrated aggression, peace-making and leaving the "party."  To be determined:  which and to what degree might any or all of these actions amount to behavior as boorish as the "guest" type?

*Note*  In my short time as a member here at NB, I have had mostly positive experiences, including with those who disagree with some of my views.  I appreciate that. *Note*

    Continuing...

Experiment: I and my staff will once again read through all 17 tracked Pi314 forum/bog items and the attendant 1200+ posts therein.  by doing this, we will be able to gather a significant test sampling of behavior in regards to manners.  This will take a few days; be patient.  The categories we will allocate comments and portions thereof are as follows (but not limited to):

    • unanswered legitimate debate requests
    • unanswered debate questions
    • categorical apologies, i.e with or without qualifiers
    • the &^$@($^@^$@ OH MY GAWDS!!!
    • The HAHAHAHAHAHAHA 's
    • name calling as an insult direct
    • the insult direct
    • denigrating another persons faith or lack thereof
    • derision phrases
    • patronizing catch phrases
    • Buh BYE
    • aHem
    • internet short talk
    • LOL in and of itself
    • and anything else which is not germane to its thread (friendly chat aside) but is instead the disregard of the humanity of another human being

Once the data are gathered and collated, I will post all the results, conclusions and my own opinions here and in its own Woodshed forum. My staff works as I write.

Once the study is complete, maybe someone will be interested, maybe not.  I, for one, am interested in those 1200+ posts accomplishing something besides grinding egos and getting jollies.  Granted there were brief moments of real content, but even those moments were fraught with disrespectful behavior and bad manners .  We will see if my life experience aligns with the recent experiences at NB.

Personally, if I ever acted the way folks have acted in the Woodshed (heated debate DOES NOT have to be so d*mn rude) lately, my Momma would have beaten me into the next life, regardless if I were right or wrong.  And she is right; you do not defeat stereotypes by becoming one.

Just because we don't agree, won't agree. can't agree, shouldn't agree, whatever, doesn't give us a license to treat someone with disrespect. Even if your opponent is more guilty than you, think about this: you can't be a little bit pregnant; you are or you aren't. Let the rude be rude; you will garner more respect and veracity to your argument, even from those you disagree with regularly.  If you can stick to your guns, under fire you will accomplish more.  Remember, people are judged by the company they keep, so too are your ideas and beliefs judged in the same way.  A rude person only impresses other classless people.

I understand when enough is enough, and Churchill is right, sometimes you do have to "step on the other guys toes until HE apologizes."  At the same time, Churchill, one of the greatest speakers of the modern are (or any era) was direct, on topic and unflappable.  His demeanor was one of respect for himself and his audience.

I understand that Free Speech gives a person certain latitude in not only what you say but how you say it.  My comments on manners no way endorses shutting people up.  I am looking at this from practical and philosophical viewpoints.

All things being equal, I do believe a dueling society would be of great benefit and solve the question of manners decisively...

Thank you your time and consideration to this post.  We will crunch this data. check our work and see what we find.

Does anyone need a refill?  How about some homemade ice cream?

"I'll take the harsh reality of liberty over the illusion of security...everytime!"

    Holy CRAP!!! I'm impressed!

I commend you highly on the time and dedication it took to write that.

Do you really have a staff? That stuff really is going to take a while to sift through.  Honestly, I look forward to your results.

Two points I would ask you to consider as your research progresses:  First, There are many posts by JWF that I simply haven't read and don't plan to.  Just look at this thread and you can see why. So if there are challenges in there somewhere, likely I have not seen them.  For the most part the posts I speak of have been posted in the past 48 hours. Also consider that it's me against, like, 15 people at a time making demands.

Second, I try to come up with an actual "subject" for my posts, rather than simply let it take the first few words from the post itself.  Thus the occasional "aHEM" or "Oh puhLEAZE".  Sometimes meant derisively, but usually not.

Finally, something you might be interested in... Shawn and Chose and I had a discussion about this, and so they both did an "experiment", signing on to Daily Kos, posting as a conservative, and waiting for the response.  I haven't checked in a while, but last time I di, the "name calling" didn't extend much past "Go away, Troll!"  They could probably fill you in, though, not to include the data in your survey, but just as an interesting point of comparison.

And I hope you have some separate category for activities such as creating a Wikipedia page for the purpose of insulting someone, and baselessly acccusing someone of being a pedophile.

    Looking forward to this!

Given you are so impressed with the promised endeavor, I'm amused you now try to skew the yet to be tabulated findings with personal explanations.

    Valid points!

Do you dispute any of my points?

    → It's your thread

I agree it's in your best interest to make every attempt to have yourself painted in a favorble light.

I didn't say your attempt was wrong, just amusing.  And I didn't make a judgement as to whether your points were right or wrong, just that your attempt to influence a study that you welcome, is amusing.

If the poster is dedicating a staff to the tabulation, they'll bring in their own biases, to be evaluated by a final judge.  I'm just implying you're trying to influence results before any are tabulated.

    LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

    Agreed

...but I'm trying to INFLUENCE them to reflect greater accuracy, nothing more.

    → Que sera sera

All you can do, sight unseen, is try to influence the study.

You could ask for a search of the letter "Z", but it might not fall within the scope of the statistician's intent.

But certainly I understand your perceived need to influence the scope as well as the intent.

    The Study

Thank you for your comment.  I used thinking about this to go to sleep last night, woke up and started the project. It took about thirty minutes to write.  The wading and sifting will take longer.

I have a Staff.  Usually their job description is a lot different, but for the rest of the week, this is it.  I have the kids in the home-school working on it as well for their Civics, Current Events, Critical Thinking, English and Comparative Religion segments.

There are some of your requests I will not take into consideration and a few that I will.  Once the study is farther along, I will be able to address your suggestions further.

I have had some experience online and off with leftists and leftist sites. Very, very few good experiences, several credible death threats, even against my children.  I have not been to those particular sites, nor is it likely that I will.  I would be happy for CL3X and Shawn to fill me in if they so desire.  Both have been unctuously courteous to me in my time here.  Being quite a bit different, I have found NB, thus far, to be the most accepting of me and mine.

I have at this point read ALL posts on all 17 threads (too many times.) I will now go back through and make my way through the tabulations, spot-checking the work of the Staff and they checking mine.  I do not sit as moderator or disciplinarian as to content; I am using this sample as an opportunity to verify or disprove, to an extent, some of my own conclusions.

Thank you for being my lab rat. We have refreshments available.

You have taken on a BIG JOB, dude!

    → Rex

I'm already suspicious of your stated goal, given you have already agreed to have your study steered by a participant.

There are some of your requests I will not take into consideration and a few that I will.

Your purview has now been either broadened or narrowed at the request of a participant.

I'd simply suggest you not allow your study, and hence your results, be so influenced.

Machs nix to me.  Just siding with the clinical approach.

    LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

    The Study

Rest assured that attempts to influence through explanation or qualification will fail.  These things have been here for a couple weeks, for all to read.  I am merely looking to see if this sample proves my stated hypothesis.

As to what I agreed to include is additional categories.  I will include many of these, from many sources.  I already stated in the post concerning the study that I would expand data categories as needed.

The scope of the study is stil 17 items, 1200+ posts, the primary subject is still Pi314.

You can be suspicious of my stated goal; such is your right.  But my being polite to a poster does not put me in cahoots with them!

I do, after all, still think that my primary Hypothesis is correct; a significant segment of liberals are lacking in manners or respect for others.  But we will run the data and give it a look.

Any categories you would like to add?

Enjoy the show and the refreshments! :)

    *chuckle*

we occasionally use liberal's comments from this website as "teaching moments" for our children.  You've taken that to a whole new level.

    Children and Teaching Moments

You go where the best harvest is, right? Plenty of opportunity here...

This can also help convey behavior expectations, how to deal with people who are not in control of themselves, conflict resolution and more.

What I am getting at is an issue bigger than single issues, which potentially underlines the roots of ideological differences.

How can we communicate with our opponents if we cannot communicate with our opponents?  How do you approach the unapproachable?

Your Momma probably told you the same thing mine did about vinegar and honey.  Despite being under leftist attack most of my life, from all angles, I still think that manners will get me farther that rudeness.  I am not talking self-defense or property protection, I am simply speaking within the arena of ideas.

Basic point of salesmanship; people are more likely to do business with a polite person.

At the end of the day I am a gun-toting, flag-waving, freedom-loving American Conservative, holding the Constitution dear to my heart.  But I can be polite about it, even in the face of patronizing, condescending leftists. If it goes too far, I follow Churchill's advice....

Point:  If you're unwilling to feed them lies, your arsenal can only be half as full as that of the liberals.

    LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

    I Agree

And at a thousand yards my Springfield 30-06 does not need as many rounds to score a hit as does an SKS, if you get my meaning.

If a person thinks they can win an argument with someone ideologically opposed and that winning at all costs will mean something, then using the same ammo as the leftists is the way to go.  The thing for conservatives to remember is that for us the ends DO NOT justify the means; how you get there is as important as "there."  If Light went dark, well, it would be darkness.

But in the face of spewn epithets, repeated attempts to be disenfranchised and a pervasive double standard against the right, it is hard not to start flinging poo back. Been there myself.  I do think that the high ground gets you a better field of view increases range.

Now, Cool Arrow (which is a cool moniker) I hope that you don't feel that I am directing anything in what I am writing overtly at you; that is not my intent.  I really do appreciate your interest is this.

Instead, if a person realizes that the specific person may not be defeated (because they will never concede that you had a valid point; they just dodge and smoke,) but that their ideology may be, then doing it politely, and seemingly without breaking a sweat. As I am sure you know better than I, there are always far more "guests" than "users."  To get someone acting the buffoon, without ever doing so yourself wins arguments, too.

Will Pi314 ever believe what I do?  I am 99% sure that will never happen.  Will someone, observing the debate, possibly change their mind?  Much more likely.  So I debate for those that might hear, and as such, it is important that I am as different from who I am debating in a positive way as possible.  I really can never see myself on the same side as Pi314, and in reality, dinner at my house, in reality, might be a disaster if he were a guest.  But maybe not.

That being said, early data indicates JWF to be more than justified in going inot "toe-stepping" mode.  From the earliest Pi314 I have access to, JWF made argument points that went unanswered.  We will have to see what happens in the next 16 items, but as of right now, Pi314 did ignore legitimate debate.  The score is about even on the rudeness, however the non-Pi314s have the only real apology so far, which is to their credit. More to come as we dig deeper....

One unexplained (from the data) point is how Pi314 has been a member for 43 weeks and 4 days, according to NB, and yet he's been on less than 20 threads and only for under the last 3 weeks.  I do not know the system here very well, but my second oldest daughter brings up a point I was wondering about as well.

    Easy answer

Apparently Isigned up here months ago... for what, I don't know... but never actually posted until recently.

    Aaaaannnnd...

There's one to add to your "rude responses from the right"

    :-)

    The Study

As I stated in the original post, I have set the current limits on the 17 items and 1200+ posts as of this morning.

Once having announced my intentions to do this, including additional data, accepting qualifications or explanations would not fit the study criteria.  It would not be reasonable to allow influences in that manner.  To accept category or answer requests for information is one thing.  But to accept data from a pool which has been apprised of the intent to do so...

Well, the observer affects the observed.  The data changes.

What I am using is the opportunity of 1200+ posts of people doing what they do, naturally without them being aware I was doing it.  It gains one perspective and cleaner data.

So I hope that clears up some of what I wrote concerning what I was doing.

    Hi PI

I think you are sincere in wanting to debate.  So I was interested to see facts and sources from chose life 3xs re: stem cell research.  I was wondering if you have a response to her post?  It seems to me that the evidence is pretty overwhelming.  Respectfully,  BO STINKS

    K...

Haven't gotten there yet, but I'll check it out.

    Okay, thanks

The great Socio/Economic Experiments of the 20th cent. (communism, socialism, fascism) only killed a few hundred million.  Let's give 'em another try! - me

    For Candance

...as to whether Cheney should be prosecuted for it, that's a bit more complicated.

    Agreed

Timothy McVeigh, that's a poor example of a violent conservative.

Well, I wouldn't call him a conservative, because not even a small percentage of conservatives are that nuts.  I'd refer to him as an extreme right-winger. But he was part of a right wing movement.  You couldn't say the Columbine kids were part of a "trenchcoat mafia" movemment.  And did the DC sniper act on ideology?  I thought he was just a nut who happened to be Muslim.  Anyway,  I gave several other examples there, and this weekend's shooting of 3 cops provides another.

For what it's worth, I hate Bill O'Reilly and can easily link to several old posts on here where I said as much. Those kind of assumptions is why people think you're obnoxious.

Not sure why you would take offense to that.  He's the number one guy pushing the "War on Christmas" baloney, it was only natural for  me to assume you got it from him.  Sorry all the same.

First you say that no one tells cashiers not to say Merry Christmas, then you admit that their managers tell them not to say Merry Christmas. You say that all holidays should be included, but after you defend managers for doing the opposite. Don't you see something wrong with that?
Why don't we stop saying happy July 4 since immigrants might be offended? Happy Easter is offensive too. And single people are offended by Valentine's Day.

Now here we have some crossed wires. The implication from your original question was that outside liberal groups were forcing stores to stop saying "Merry Christmas". I simply pointed out that the stores do that themselves, because it's good business.  You don't know whether that guy who just walked in is celebrating Christmas, Channuka.  And your comparison to other holidays doesn't hold water.  Christmas is the one time of year, as far as I know, that there are about 4 different holidays being celebrated at the same time. Hell, even Pagans have their Winter Solstice celebration. It's just smart business to greet in such a way that you've been welcoming to the customer no matter what religion they are.  That's my point.

    more debate for pi

I really enjoyed having to scroll through 100 new posts to find the part that interests me at the bottom. I applaud your effort for debate, but it looks like the plan is to clutter up all your forums with nonstop flaming and pile ons.

But he was part of a right wing movement.

What movement was he a part of other than neonazi militias? Are you really saying skinheads belong to same right as Rush Limbaugh and Michelle Malkin?

As to the Columbine boys, have you extensively studied their motives and ideology? I have because that happened a year after I graduated and I still had friends in high school. Those boys believed in a rabid form of Darwinism wherein the "strong" are allowed to eliminate the "weak." They also hated religion and thought it had to be destroyed. Just because they hadn't yet joined an organized movement didn't mean they weren't acting on ideology.

The DC sniper was not just some angry black guy. He was acting to fulfill an ideological plan.

The weekend shooting of three cops provides another? You mean that guy in Pittsburgh who listened to Alex Jones and thought Jews were secretly running the country? Yeah, you're right Pi, no proof he ever listened to Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh, but we'll just blame it on them anyway.

*you* started this saying that the right had too many voices who were whipping up fear. No proof Tim McVeigh or Richard Poplawski ever listened to those voices. All you have is one connection that they hated gun control.

Back to Christmas. Here are some examples of the ACLU taking legal action against public schools and the like even though some 95% of Americans say they celebrate that holiday specifically. Because of one family being offended, dozens of other families saw their cherished holy day diminished into a public celebration of Santa Claus all in the name of 'fairness.'

Yes there are many other holidays that fall around the same time frame as Christmas, but not on the exact same day. Why is it offending to say Merry Christmas on December 25? And even beyond that, why is it okay to put up pictures of Santa and Rudolph - obvious allusions to Christmas - but not a photo of Jesus?

It really isn't about getting rid of Christmas. It boils down to taking Christmas and turning it into a secular day. I never see the ACLU complaining when a school openly pushes menorahs for Hannuka, or openly teaches children about Kwanzaa. Once again it's all about minimizing Christmas.

    I KNOW!!!

I really enjoyed having to scroll through 100 new posts to find the

See, this is the problem... just a few a$$holes are making it really difficult for those of us who actually want to discuss issues.

More on the rest of your post later.

    Candance

Ecellent points. I try to ruminate on whether I would be offended by Jews wishing me "Happy Chanukkah", or someone wishing me a "Happy Kwanzaa". I have to come to the conclusion that I wouldn't. Nothing offensive is meant. Don't we bear some responsibility to each other to NOT become offended by that which is NOT offensive.

    The Easily Offended

    I agree.

For a person to take umbrage at a person wishing them well and wishing to share in the happiness that their holiday brings them....

It is ridiculous.  We have a "happiness" shortage at times in the world as it is; why create artificial shortages?  Who wins if everyone is miserable?

I am glad to have someone share their joy and good news with me.  I am invested in my fellow man; happy folks are productive folks. Their Liberty is as important to me as my own.  Part of that Liberty is their freedom to take pleasure and uplift from their special days.

It is a sad state of affairs that wishing someone "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Yule," or "Have a Great Talk Like a Pirate Day" has become a bone of contention.

Reading this last post of yours, I can tell you one thing -- and Candance will back me up on this -- you certainly are nothing like my middle brother.

Will you be my middle brother?*

    :)

    (* assuming you're a guy, that is.)

    THE MESSIAH IS... LEFT !!

    Well I Am a Guy...

As long as there is no perjorative intent to being a "middle brother" I would be proud to be associated with such a fine artist.  I work in and sell a bit of art myself.  One of my degrees is in Theatre Performance, another in Theatre Production...

Fatal flaw.  I can't stand NYC, can't stand L.A. No theatre or movies for me (oh, a couple when they come closer to where I live!)  Its pretty tough for a Conservative to work in the business, anyway. So I became a boring ol' engineer/architect who liked laying brick more than either.  Now I make and sell spiritual art and focus on other business projects.  I still produce a show or music from time to time, locally.

I played football in college, among other things.  I caught a lot of grief from the guys about the Theatre thing.  Until I made a simple observation:

How many girls are out here on the field?  In the locker room? Do the math!  What is the count, boys? ;)  One of my buddies one-upped me and took four years of cheerleading......

So, break a leg and give 'em heck!

And, in my opinion, you are good!

-From you honored to be "middle brother"

Thanks a lot for the kind words :) How long have you been with NB, btw?

Cool that you have degrees in Theatre and sell art. I was a child actor before I discovered music, FYI. And yes, being a conservative-leaning artist alone is not easy, and then try being one in NYC. Yep, you got it. Near impossible. :p

Feel free to spread the Shy word to friends! :) My new video is what I'm promoting right now, as I'm really proud of it:

My wife decided that it was important for me to have a political and philosophical outlet, beyond what I do around town, here.  So here I am.  And she is right, as she usually is.  It has been mostly fun; minimum trolls and nice folks. Looks like I opened a" can" of it today.  Didn't really mean to, but I had to to something, you know?

Well, good luck in NYC!  Your new "middle brother" sends you his best.

I still hope the "middle brother" thing is not some colossal joke on an old, un-hip guy.  I don't think it is, and I will continue as though it is not a bad thing to be.  :)

Take it any way you can get it, bro!

    rofl shy!!

You do need some new brothers, that's for sure.

    Ok, BUT!!

WHY do you blame Libs for that?  One of the biggest offenders was Wal-Mart, right?  Is Sam Walton a lib?!?!  How many of the heads of these big corps ARE libs???  I'm betting close to ZERO..

There is NO liberal organization out there demanding stores greet their customers with "Happy Holidays". NONE!  Bill O'Reilly and Neil Cavuto want you to THINK there is, cus it gets their Christmastime ratings up -- nothing like  a "War On Christmas" to get people to tune in. But it's a manufactured controversy.  And you guys are just suckered right into it.

    Disingenuous pi

I know, I know, I'm banned, but bear with me for a moment.

You know very well that the attack on Christianity is fomented on the left. They see themselves as attacking conservative intolerance when they attack the left. They see the rules God lays down as intolerance. They can't, or won't divorce the two.

Of course, this is plain silly. Christians are probably the most inclusive group of people in existence. That we don't support the gay lifestyle is a matter of following God's laws. A Christian really has no choice in the matter. Just as you must follow the rules laid out by whatever force drives you, so must we. Still, gays are welcomed in most Christian churches, if not allowed to serve as clergy. Again, those pesky rules laid out in the Bible.

    But I digress.

As stated above, and for the reasons given, among others, the left's attack on Christianity is supported by some influential institutions, perhaps chief among them, the ACLU. They have some deep pockets, so it is not surprising that businesses would rather cave than spend the money, or lose the revenue, to fight against it.

Again I ask. Why is someone wishing you a "merry" or a "happy" whatever so offensive? That someone would share their happiness with you should be taken as the gift it is intended to be.

    "This
liberal would be all about socialize -- uh, uh, would be about
basically taking over and the government running all of your companies."-Maxine Waters 2008

It's not the least bit offensive to me

    But you say:

You know very well that the attack on Christianity is fomented on the left.

SHOW me where the left has forced stores to say "Happy Holidays"!  Don't say "We all know it", if I said that you guys would be all over me!

I'm sure it's correct that the attacks on, say, prayer in schools come primarily from the left, but that's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about the perceived "War On Christmas", which has everything to do with commerce and NOTHING to do with politics!

You "know" differently?  GIMME SOME EVIDENCE!

I'm not saying that anyone forced them to

I'm saying that the anti-Christian sentiment, which resides mostly, if not entirely, on the left, was the impetus for these decisions. As far as I can tell, Walmart backed off and went back to saying "merry Christmas" and selling Chistmas trees and whatnot. That they felt they had to stop saying "merry Christmas" in the first place was not because of the attitude torwards Christianity from the right.

    "This
liberal would be all about socialize -- uh, uh, would be about
basically taking over and the government running all of your companies."-Maxine Waters 2008

    um okay

Once again I'm not just parroting what I hear on Fox News. I do know how to think for myself.

Stores feel cultural pressure to conform. It's not a very hard concept. When lefty groups go around banning Christmas on all public property and in public schools, of course businesses will follow along by being as non-controversial as possible.

As to your point that retail executives are not liberal, that's simple assumption. Even if someone is a capitalist it doesn't mean they are culturally conservative.

    hi Candance

    an article for you.  (2007)

And I want to explain something about how BOR got involved in the fiasco here in my state.

Two years ago (2006) The Seattle-Tacoma Airport initially pulled the Christmas trees from its display because someone got offended and tried to sue the state for putting them up.  The resulting storm caused all displays to be eliminated the following year - In 2007 the bland "Winter" displays got hauled out.  This year was a year of complete chaos.  O'Reilly brought so much press to the problem that people were coming out of state to protest.  All displays were given 'equal space'  Agnostics, Atheists -  People even wanted to put up  Festivus Pole.  Of course, by this point it had evolved into nothing but a joke.

There is concrete evidence that Christian influence is being stripped from American society as much as possible.  It would only take ten minutes to find the information.  And it certainly isn't the conservative right that's doing it. In my opinion giving it a "War on Christmas" slogan just cheapens it. BOR's self serving egomaniacal rantings did nothing to help.

    thanks kata

BOR is a tool who often does more harm than good. I really wish lefties would stop assuming we like him.

    Then why all the

    Then why all the lawsuits?

    Liberalism is a convenient lie.

    I must say

I am profoundly disappointed in all of you. Whether you agree with me, whether you disagree with me, I would think that such things as creating a Wikipedia page for the sole purpose of insulting me would be considered "out of line"

I would think that repeatedly accusing someone -- a man with a teenage daughter -- of being "A sex offender with a sex offender's sign in his lawn"... would be out of line.

And yet, besides Bubbaster, not a single one of you has stepped upo to say "Hey, JWF, STFU."

Not one of you has the balls to register disapproval.

Those of you who have engaged me in honest debate, I have engaged with respect. I prefaced this thread, and the last, with a call to 'wipe the slate clean", put the insults behind us.  I even made a special entreaty to JWF at the top of this one.  And the first thing I get is an insult.

Some of you have shown me just how nice the right wing can be.  And others have proven every biased cliche.  But regardless, you all sat back and let JWF spew his filth.

    You should all be proud.

The book will never close on this one, will it? Anthropologists and historians will be pouring over this one 1000 years from now.

Why didn't Alexander just stop at one point and say, "Ah, it is enough, let's go home"?

Why did Roosevelt turn his back on the troops in the Philippines and say "That Hitler dude, gots ta stop him first".

Why did Bush, despite having no love from the MSM, go after Saddam when he knew the MSM and lefties were go completely apedoodoo?

One more time, we were still at war with Saddam Hussein, he had only signed an armistice, and violated that early and often.

You do not need a pretense to resume hostilities, you only need one man to stand up and say "Enough!"

I did not ask "Why?" in 2003 or any year thereafter. I asked "Why did it take so long (to go back in)? "

My question now is "At what point do we start calling these people out for what they are, liars?"

    Pi~

I will stand up for you. I have not been on here lately, and I had no idea that some were taking things to such a hateful extreme. You are right -- there is no excuse in the world for the hateful words out there & the setting up of a Wiki site. I read about this before going to Good Friday service last night with my family, and I felt ill about it. Jesus was despised -- picked on, beaten, scorned, bloodied by a mob, and nobody stood up. Last night, that brought me to tears, and there is no way I can look the other way on this. I feel so disappointed that anybody on the right would go to this level, and I may be super naive, but I've never seen it before from the right (on this site). I have on the left, but I should have known...we are all human beings, so it will come from anywhere. It's just very disappointing to me.

So, I apologize to you, for anybody who has hurt you or is degrading you and getting so far out of line that I don't quite have the word for it. Wrong would be one word, but it's too weak of a word. I wish I could do something more powerful to stop it, but I wanted you to know that somebody did stand up...and I'm so sorry about it. :(

You realize what this new level of angst has brought me to? I am standing up for a liberal -- never in my life would I have expected that to happen! LOL. But seriously, I am really disappointed.

    Good morning Shawn and Georgia

Y'all are right about forgiving and starting over. Pi, however should have known better than to go into the lion's cage and start slapping the lion around.

Pi intended to stir it up from the start and succeeded quite well.

Jesus Loves You so much He died for you

    Shawn~

Thanks...I really appreciate it. If I'm not a decent representative of conservatism (or Christianity), then my words are hollow, my points are meaningless and my heart is running on empty -- and frankly, then I've not nothin'! To me, there is nothing more important than compassion. People can intellectualize all day (and it's fun to debate, when it doesn't get insulting & mean), but to me, the debate is not the most important thing. For me, the most important part is how we conduct ourselves throughout the debate -- that really tells the story. Because who in their right mind (no pun intended) would be inclined to be open to another's viewpoint, if it is so laced with hatred?

    Thanks again, Shawn...and Happy Easter.

    Georgia Girl

Pi314, was not blameless and he could name call just like anyone else, but imo he was true to his word, he did not flame anyone unless someone did it to him first.

    Shawn~

I hear ya. All of us can get revved up and defensive at times (myself included) -- but the level of animosity that went toward Pi314 started to go off the charts. With all Christian kindness, a few people needed to be hosed down...or perhaps take a break to eat a bunch of chocolate Easter eggs until they calmed down. Too bad there is no timeout option on the site....you know, some little "eject" button we can all push (by consensus) when somebody starts going over the edge...and then the sounds of "Ahhhhhh!" as we realize another mandated timeout has occurred. ;)

    Exactly Georgia Girl

It always amazes me how someone talks about Jesus and forgiveness, then turn around and calls someone a turd and is royally insulted when someone sticks up for themselves.

    GG,

while i have no particular insight into the reasons Pi is no longer with us perhaps a look at his overall reason and intent for being on the site?  All he did was was post forums intent on getting reaction, how is that compatable with the purpose or 'terms of use' of NB?

I tried to talk to "Pi" on another forum, and just tried to get him to chill some, and he was nice about it~but I think that the give-and-take of how he was with a few others was just a nasty mix that became more horrid as time went by. I agree that his posts kept it going and going, and it did end up sounding just like a junior high level of arguments -- not really a debate on the issues or anybody being open to other ideas, etc.

I can't say if Pi really did want to gain some insight or was just hear to argue, but I do agree that he was set in his views. You know, unlike me -- I'm just totally open to anything and always agree with points the left make -- LOL! ;) I do have to say that when I tried to inquire about Pi on some of his views in a mellow way, he was more than respectful and seemed open to chatting back and forth on an opposing view...but I have no idea what NB has as the "terms of use" that he could have violated. I just hated that it got so darn nasty. I do think some folks went way too far with him & should have just backed off and stopped posting. That said, I know this site is supposed to be a haven for us conservatives to feel like there is a place for us, so I get why many are not up to debate from the left. To be honest, I like this site because I do feel like others get my views and what I stand for, and I did not come on here to argue with the left. I just don't feel like it! ;)

He did seem to like the battle, but I think he got to a point where even he wanted things to be more civil. I could see the good guy in him, when he wasn't in battle. I'm relieved the posts have ended from the standpoint that some of the things I read (in the exchange with Pi) are things I would like never to see on this site again! That part was just not right~he did not deserve that. Nobody does!

    Peace~

    Hold on a second...

    botg,

Too convenient and a pure dodge of sorts. Let's look at the terms of use and say the MODs were derelict in their duties in not reining in JWF, Restless1, and CA as they continued their full blown assault on pi314. I'm not here to defend pi314, only pointing out the hypocrisy in not banning JWF for his actions in this matter.

"You may not use this web site to post commercial
solicitations, reveal private information of others without their
permission, engage in cracking, hacking, or other illegal conduct."

Wiki's 'powers that be' seem to know when someone like JWF creates an attack page and deletes it. The MODs on this site allowed JWF to continue posting absolute revolting, disgusting material attacking another poster...ie "Viscous sticky internet turd trolls and Branding" forum page. JWF was allowed and given permission to continue his assault on a poster who from ALL accounts was defending himself only when being attacked.  So, here we have a poster allowing to be kicked & attacked in his own forum pages...

"Kick Pi's Big Lib Ass" in 3 parts,

"Let's start over" in 2 parts,

and then other poster's forum pages directly battling pi314...

    "Our friend pi314"

    "The Pi314 vs Choselife3x argument"

JWF's sticky page-"Viscous sticky internet turd trolls and Branding".

Yeah, you're right..."he came here to instigate and not to be open to hearing an opposing viewpoint"...which by all the 1000+ comments for all to see, he clearly didn't try to answer any questions whatsoever. What a joke! The facts are for those who are able to see, pi314 in a short amount of time answered and debated with those willing to debate as opposed to those who were trying to attack his views. In the end...no one could claim any type of victory...just the banishment of ONE liberal poster who only defended himself when attacked.  There should have been more blood on the floor if the MODs did there job.

I thought this site was for "Combating & Exposing Liberal Media Bias"...it needs a name change to "Combating & Exposing Liberals". Great job, heckva job!

    ~Clarification

Pi314 set up the 'arguement thread' with me to continue our Geneva Convention debate.

Personally,  I liked him just fine and I am upset over the way he was treated.

    My apologies...

    CL3x,

So, pi314 had 6 of his own forum pages for people to openly debate him. I stand corrected...thank you.

I feel badly about Pi, and I see nothing wrong with him wanting to debate those who wanted to debate~it got so ugly toward him.

    His last comment was...

    GG,

...to put it mildly...over the top. He didn't need to respond in the way he did. He could have ignored the forum page or commented on how he was being unduly attacked by JWF. He had enough support where the MODs could have been alerted to JWF's disgusting page. He attacked the site's management, which crossed the line and led to his subsequent dismissal. JWF should have been banned for his lack of civility and overall actions. I won't hold my breath. Just a question for my own edification, has any conservative been banned on this site for going off the deep end like JWF?

The only conservatives that get booted are the ones that are complained about by other conservatives. These posters are before your time but examples are debrajm and tracheostromy.

I saw a banning once of a conservative  I like and respect alot because the mods misconstrued his comments as a threat.

Other than that, it is very hard to banned if you are a conservative. I admit though, usually libs are banned when they trolled other peoples forums and harrassed them. Most of the fighting was in PI's own forums where he was the one usually harrassed.

    Bubba~

I haven't even read Pi's last comment yet, but I do think he did some stuff for shock value. And really, Pi knew how Pi could be! I tried to get him to ignore a few of the posters, but to no avail. *_* And  I agree with your take on it being unfair on the flipside -- I was stunned that a lot of the posts were allowed to stand and there was no action against anybody else.

I have not been on here long enough to know if conservatives have gotten banned on the flipside, but you have a really valid point.

    ~Hi GG!

My little girls have had the sniffles and now the baby has them too. Been putting the veggie garden in as well.

Pie e-mailed me to assure me that his last rant was purely to get under the skin of the people harassing him relentlessly. (my phrasing)

    Chose~

Aw, may all your babies feel better soon! We've had sinus junk here. I'm doing a BIG Easter egg hunt this afternoon for my son & friends. I hope everybody is up to it!

Hey, if not too much trouble, would you relay my message to Pi on here -- I did want him to know that somebody did take up for him...I was really upset about the Wiki stuff & etc. :(

P.S. It is garden time for us here, too. Thanks to my hubby, we have a really nice, big garden. He even managed a little makeshift "greenhouse" in our garage...and then transplants the veggie/herbs when they are ready.

    ~Sure

The girls are better already and they went to church for the Easter egg hunt, sheep petting, and butterfly release. Mommy stayed home with the snuffly, sneezy baby. Poor little man, he just turned 6 months yesterday. About to get some teeth too, I think.

    oops

I double-posted. I'm gonna get kicked off here: 1) for incompetence & 2) for being off on one of my tangents again (garden). *_*

    P.P.S.

Oh, and the "greenhouse" is a separate room in our garage, with the light on all the time. Since that made no sense (a greenhouse being in a garage), thought I should clarify!

i was not commenting on the whole of the thread just giving a thought on why Pi would be banned.

Personally i posted in Pi's threads early on but tired of his not answering challenges to his viewpoints but deflected, asserted, and shifted the burden of proof.

As to others posting in those threads, why do i need to mention anything?  Are there not enough people here pointing fingers?

...with all do respect, my comment was about the nature of the thread and how posters were enjoying themselves while others were clearly in violation of the terms of use. I'm not here to defend pi314 & whether he engaged you in the way you would have liked to have been engaged. It's all about choice and you chose the path of disengagement instead of full blown assault. I engaged him with a few comments and questions and was satisfied by his answers. I'm not putting my life on hold waiting for an answer just so I can have the last word and feel some kind of silly triumph over an argument. Thanks for the response.

Since you saw fit to bring my name up

Care to show me where I lodged anyghing against Pi? I took to him in ONE post that I can remember, after he accused all of NB of intellectual impairment. If asking questions and getting annoyed by the dodges and drivel make me guilty of an "all out assault", then guilty I am .

I find the "mourning of poor pi" a bit over the top. I don't think he should have been banned, but we are no worse without him either. He was rude, and favorite style of debate was "I proved you wrong, HAHAHAHAHAHA&***#(#!!!!". Of course, he became even more rude if you perused his "evidence" and showed him it proved nothing. And God forbid you question his source, (on more than one occasion his "source" was nothing more than a post of the same assertion on another thread), because if you found his source to be the slightest bit questionable, the insults were sure to follow.

Can we take pi off the list for sainthood now?

Hey, I just read the top of what Pi314 wrote on this forum. You have to admit, the guy could be funny. Example: "You like me. You really LIKE me!!" (I think that is supposed to be a parody of Sally Fields at the Academy Awards or something...LOL.)

    On the topic of banishment...

If anybody can clear this up for me...when someone is "banned" off the site, does that mean they can never come back on again with their username? Or are they temporarily banned?

    GG

i believe the username is gone but oftentimes the poster is allowed back in a couple of weeks.  Many come back on their own with new identities.  In the most greivious cases the network id is blocked

"Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend,------------inside a dog it's too dark to read"   ---Groucho

    With today's dynamic networks...

    botg,

...I think it would be difficult to ban an entire network id. I'm not an expert in the field, I was told with today's networks the ISPs can continually free up IDs and allow for faster access with more users and less access points. Correct?

I could see a troll tapping away in a coffee house & poof...NB shutting down the feed. I could be wrong, but I think the email is banned and that's it.

your 'internet service provider' (ISP) assigns an address to your account it's how they 'find' you on the weebs.  That address can be blocked.  What he was saying was if the person is using a coffeehouse as their web connection then when the address is blocked no one can access NB from that coffeehouse.

What i mentioned is that if a banned person switchs their provider they get a new address would not be blocked

    botg...re banning

I believe the username is gone but oftentimes the poster is allowed back in a couple of weeks.  Many come back on their own with new identities.

I don't think banned posters, as a general rule, are knowingly allowed back.  If it is discovered they are back under a different identity--e.g. Leon/gunslinger--they are summarily ousted again.  It's my understanding Leon repeatedly requested to be given another chance, to no avail.

guttermouth reappeared under a different name and somehow managed to carry on for a period of time before being snuffed again.

tracheostomy has been the only conservative permanently banned that I know of since I have been here and he commited suicide by cop after religious debates were deemed to be inappropriate topics.  [Another was temporarily banned and then fortunately allowed to return.]  Shawn mentioned debra(?), but I think that may have been before my time.  In any event I was unaware of when or why it occurred.

    Jer

    *sigh*

Pi rubbed people the wrong way constantly.   He came in guns blazing.  Pinched people's heads off for no reason.  He was rude to choselife3x a couple of times.  She has a big heart and overcame his attitude. You obviously took a liking to him.  He was rude to me and later had to apologize on several occassions. I am a patient person and tolerated it until he implied I should move to Antarctica if  I wasn't going to hold up my end of the 'social contract'.  That hurt, given that I had tried to be kind to him and give him the benefit of the doubt. Honestly, I hoped he was basically another person like you shawn.  Just looking for someone to help answer some questions.  Maybe understand conservative thought a bit more. But that seems not the case.  His propensity to go after the "low hanging fruit" far outweighed by his desire to debate honestly.  He wanted attention and thrived under it.

I'm sorry that he got banned.  I think that people who were equally as rude as him should have gotten banned too if that was indeed the criteria (who can know what he might have PM'd to people).  But as I have said time and time again : This board is not ruled by consensus.  We all here by the grace of the moderators.  Problems with posters should be addressed to them.

It's a shame we can't all put on our best face.  As rex said, more flies with honey...

    Hi katain

I had my difference with Pi as well. I disagree with him that its all Bush's fault for the way the economy is, I disagree with him that it was all Bush's fault we are in Iraq or he lied in any way.

I disagree with him strongly that he thinks Obama is doing a good job. I did not like his debating style either, and it was at times frustrating.

The mods have a right to do whatever they want, you are right. Like I said, I never seen a lib get booted for expressing his/her pov, mainly on his own threads without any warning. To me it seems to set a precedent, that perhaps is a little bit troubling.

    April 7, 2009 - 20:33 ET by bubbaster

I find it humorous that your tagline has an association with Moorcock.

    Check the link. Moorcock

"Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is a song by the American Hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult, written by Eric Bloom (band vocal) and Michael Moorcock (British author, creator of Elric of Melniboné, Hawkmoon and the myth of the Eternal Champion). It is on the album Fire of Unknown Origin. The song can also be found on the soundtrack of the 1981 animated film Heavy Metal. An extended live version of the song is on the live album of BÖC Extraterrestrial Live.

The lyrics can be interpreted as a second-person look at an Eternal Champion after many exhausting trials and tribulations in the endless war between Law and Chaos.

Though "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is the song's proper name, it is possible to find it titled "Veteran of a Thousand Psychic Wars" because the song contains the line "You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars".

The phrase "...veterans of a Thousand Psychic Wars" is from the Hawkwind song Standing At The Edge, from the album Warrior on the Edge of Time, which also dealt with the myth of the Eternal Champion, and contained lyrics written by Moorcock.

    _______________________________________________

Moorcock wrote the lyrics to three album tracks by the American band Blue Öyster Cult: "Black Blade", referring to the sword Stormbringer in the Elric books, "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" showing us Elric's emotions at a critical point of his story (this song may also refer to the "Warriors at the Edge of Time," which figure heavily in Moorcock's novels about John Daker; at one point his novel "The Dragon in the Sword" they call themselves the "veterans of a thousand psychic wars"), and "The Great Sun Jester", about his friend, the poet Bill Butler, who died of a drug overdose. Moorcock has even performed live with BÖC (in 1987 at the Atlanta, GA Dragon Con Convention) and Hawkwind.*

It started out as a simple line from a song I liked in a movie from a simpler time long ago.

It stuck because it hit a raw nerve with liberals. They hate veterans. They hate it when America prevails in wars. They are scared of the boogeyman so the psychic thing gives them the heebie jeebies. Plus, they can't count higher than the mid 20's so that big number makes their brain go into vapor lock.

You are certainly a piece of work.
    December 29, 2008 - 09:58 ET by JWF
You are certain about winning the war in Iraq, not having the justification to start Gulf War I & II, how bad it is putting our money in the stock market, how bad the legacy of Bush is, but you are not certain about the future of the stock market, future terrorist attacks, future financial fraud, or the actions of other countries. Maybe if you put a little more thought in what has JUST happened, we would not be so taxed with your foibles.

    1. The war in Iraq ended with the collapse of Saddam Husseins government and the capture of Saddam himself. WE declared the war over at that point. There is no one to sign a surrender. Saddam would not in his prison cell and everyone else melted into the population or fled the country.

    2. What happened next was an INSURGENCY. Insurgencies do not end with a bang but a whimper. You kill or capture enough of the insurgents, the few left say it is not worth it and melt into the population at large. They do not typically stand up, say we surrender, and ask for the paperwork. Insurgencies also have a bad habit of turning the population they claim to be fighting for AGAINST THEM by their own actions. This happened in this case. Iraqi's themselves got tired of getting BLOWED UP and turned against the insurgents.

    3. We were talking about the war in Iraq. You moved the argument to Islam at large. Islam is at war with the entire Dar al-Islam (non muslim countries) STICK TO THE POINTS. You complain we had no reason to go into Iraq or Kuwait, yet you ask us to solve the PROBLEM OF THE INTIRE ISLAMIC WORLD. Make up your mind, are we going to fix things or ignore them. You started the argument. Concede the point or disprove it. Don't move the argument when it looks like you are losing.

    4. Colin Powell nor George Bush nor Cheney started the war in Iraq part deux. The 535 members of Congress authorised the use of force in Iraq in Oct 2002. ONLY CONGRESS can declare war and fund said war. The President is in charge of the conduct of the war. Congress listed 23 reasons in their authorization of force.

    5. WMD was only one of the 23 reasons listed. The MSM focused on the WMD issue. You bought into it. There should have been ZERO munitions old, weapons grade or otherwise. They were supposed to be destroyed as per the armistice Saddam Hussien agreed to.

    6. Yes WMD's were found and reported. Yes the MSM utterly failed to report it. Weekly Standard listed pages and pages of them 4 YEARS AGO!

    7. President Bush gives speeches nearly every day. There are the white house press conferences nearly every day. The President made his point repeatedly. Again the MSM utterly failed to report any of it.

    Sincerely,

PS: stop with the quotes on common english words. Who are you quoting? weapons grade is common english usage. Only liberals liberally use quotations for no reason.

The Vet may have gone Epic!

That JWF is now spewing on the other thread...

You'll understand why I'm done here.

    Enjoy your wallow, all.

Has The Vet prevailed? Can The Vet declare Victory?

Shall The Vet do the Superior Dance in the wallow?

    Sincerely,

    a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

    Don't torque the Vet!

The Vet hearts the admin staff at NewsBusters! Thank you sirs!

The Vet most certainly does not consider the most excellent website on the intertubes a "wallow"

The Vet has spent his entire career working with computers and he knows what a thankless difficult job it can be running a site as complicated and wonderful as Newsbusters.

The Vet knows that sometimes users accounts like pi314 can have passwords that suddenly change for no reason, or accounts like pi314 can get inexplicably locked or God forbid just disappear entirely.

But if something like that should happen, an account like pi314, should suddenly disappear, the fine fine fine admin staff at NewsBusters could take heart as the account, pi314, is no longer being used anyway.

The Vet would not be too sad. He might even be heartened the next time he has Color Guard paying final honors to our WWII, Korean, and now even Vietnam veterans. It may be raining or snowing, or raining and snowing, but he will stand a little prouder, know the great staff at the most delightful NewsBusters is working their hardest to ensure we can continue to enjoy this great site even without the account of pi314.

Everybody, please use the contact form at the top of the page and thank the wonderful staff at NewsBusters and tell them to be careful not to let accounts like pi314 be deleted.

    Sincerely,

    a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

The Vet gets the last word.

    Repost from other thread

First of all, The Vet wishes to thank the hard working staff at Newsbusters.

This will be the last time The Vet talks directly to the viscous sticky turd troll.

    5 days.

You managed to destroy your brand in 5 days. The Vet did not do it. YOU did it.

You went up against The Vet at exactly 12:19 on Apr 4 2009.

    5 days.

You could not make it past 5 days. You made it to the 5th lap and crashed and burned. Your lib friends ought to enjoy that. Looks like it is clear sailing for The Vet the other 495 laps.

"staying up all night to create..."

BTW, The Vet works the midnight shift. He took you down on his coffee breaks. You were wrong right up to the last post.

    The Vet still stands.

    Sincerely,

    a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

    Interesting...

    JWF,

I had asked in the beginning, "Why stay?" to pi314. He responded he liked to debate and definitely was willing & able to defend and attack with the best of them. He had buddied up with Chooselife3x and PopTech over a short period of time (shocking!). The relentless assault by you was, without a doubt, one of the most devastating seen here on NB. To imagine you actually taking the time to set up an attack page on Wiki & try to use it to skewer pi314, breathtaking. Of course, the Wiki powers that be quickly took down your page, but still A+ for effort. I commend you and all those who supported you in your effort. I thought your attack was...shall I say...over the top. The term "viscous sticky turd" and the constant unwavering use of it to describe pi314 and his liberal friends...well...I'm speechless. Great job in showing pi314 the best way conservative websites deal with posters who, for all intents and purposes, become a little too prolific & powerful. Seriously, your responses indicated utter stupidity and an absolute lack of civility. Go ahead, trot around declaring "victory"...you're the type that damages the conservative brand. Of course, that's my opinion.

    Hello.

Just wanted to say I am listening in. I think I ought to be quiet though.

I do want to tell bubbaster I listened to Harkwind. Oh, horrible, horrible, horrible. It was very perspicacious that Mr. Moorcock found BOC.

      Thanks again for the link.

    Sincerely,

    JWF...

    JWF,

It was a childish act for me to sink to your level & try to say you like " MoorCowBell and Moorcock". I will cease any more references to you enjoying "Moorcock". My apologies.

    Okay, Happy Easter?

All right. It's a little hard to keep up with all this, but I am hoping that everybody is now making up and making friends. Making friends? Right, guys? ;) LOL. I will think of this as a forum of healing (kinda jokin', kinda not)...all of us has something to learn, righto?

Here is the funny part though...we're all still on Pi's forum! Pi's gone, but his forum lives on. Ya gotta hand it to that dude. I mean, really, isn't that the tiniest bit funny? The guy won, after all! [Oh, please, I pray I did not start this up for anybody again. I'm kiddin']

    Happy Easter...peace, out! ^_^

    The Vet has had enough.

Sorry to interrupt the pity party...

This pi314 character was the worst kind of troll The Vet has seen here in a long time.

He engaged in propaganda, lies, slander, innuendo, logical fallacies, and fallacious arguments. If he had published some of it in a real newspaper under a real name, he could have been sued in a real court. None of his arguments concerning real people on the right side of the political spectrum were supported and could not be supported as they were lies.

When called out by people here that had facts, evidence and the truth, he would spew out every kind of ad hominem attack in the book - needling, goading, name calling, derision, & dismissiveness.

He couldn't spell, use proper grammar or punctuation, had a limited vocabulary & posted like a twelve year old AOLer. And he claimed spelling was not important. Yes it is. It shows you care about the things you are saying. It shows intellect. It shows the taxpayers of this country actually got something for the taxes they paid to the local county. (and now the federal government). The Vet was not the only one that wondered about the age of the pi314 character.

The only reason you guys ended up liking him was because you did not try to correct him with actual facts on his favorite propaganda - torture. Or maybe you did and shook off his ad hominem attacks.

The only time he stopped needling, goading, and name calling, and he did it for months, the only time he stopped was when The Vet pulled out the big guns. Did anyone notice that now, now he posted like a normal person and claimed a grievance. No more goading, needling, a fallacious arguments. For the first time ever, the 12 year old AOLer claimed to be hurt instead of even more needling.

     The Vet is done.

    Sincerely,

    a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

    JWF~

You really need to come out of your shell more! You're so cautious and vague that it's impossible to tell what you're thinking or how you're feeling.

    ;)
