Your Top 10 Songs of All Time!

Inspired by McCain and Obama's pandering crappy lists, let's here your top 10. I know my #1, and I'm working on the rest:

1. Tempted, Squeeze

What are your Top 10 Songs of All Time?

For REAL Change

Without much thought...

...Amazing Grace would certainly be on my list.

i got way too many faves,

i got way too many faves, but I can list the songs I find utterly reprehensible and beyond crappy:

1. should i stay or should i go (yes please for the love of god gtf out of here once and for all)

2. i kissed a girl and i liked it (unless it's sung by a gay dude - walk towards the light my friend!)

3. cocaine (BORING!!!!! heard it enough for a 1000 torturous lifetimes already)

4. all rap songs

5. all country tunes except living in fast forward and strawberry wine (don't ask)

6. what a wonderful world (like nails on a chalk board)

7. there she is, miss america

8. opening song for conan obrien - in fact, i even hate conan obrien with a passion - he's not funny, he's a dave knock-off - and dave is an incredible dink now - which makes conan a cheap knock off of a dink

9. the newsbusted tune (this is not a mosh pit)

10. i got u babe, i got u babe, i got u babe, i got uuuuuuuu...

Journalism is the opium of the liberals

my favorite songs

It would be way too hard for me to form a top ten out of all the songs I know. However here are some secular songs that immediately come to mind, organized by genre:

Pop

Rock

Alternative

Country

Dance

Hard Rock

Most of the time (now) I listen to Christian stuff not found on YouTube. But I do like some secular stuff.

Blue Train, John Coltrane

Linus & Lucy, Vince Guaraldi

Hey, Girl, Louis Prima

Just You, Just Me, Thelonious Monk

Me and My Shadow, Frank and Sammy

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing get thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for the medal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

This was impossible so I did top ten songs by Decade

and I still hate it and feel like I left too much out. Some of my favorite Bands are not even mentioned and it's all still kind of random but I tried not to mention any band more than once.

First The 60's (no particular order)

I Am the Walrus - Beatles

Bad Moon Rising - CCR

Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf

Wild Things - Troggs

Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - Animals

You Really Got Me - Kinks

My Generation - The Who

Piece of My Heart - Janis Joplin

Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix

Up on Cripple Creek - The Band

Dee, you left out These

Dee, you left out These Eyes and Paint it Black and other top hits of the 60's. How could you???? *tears streaming*

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Cause Bass it's impossible

and I have the Stones in the 70's I didn't want to repeat repeat. But see since I'm breaking out by year people can add stuff more easily - like you did.

The 70's

The 70's and the 90's were the hardest to narrow down because those are my favorite years for music but heres a feeble attempt at it

The 70's (In no particular order)

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Can You Hear Me Knocking- Rolling Stones

LaGrange-ZZ Top

Misty Mountain Hop- Led Zeppelin

Sweet Emotion -Aerosmith

Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

Bloody Well Right - Supertramp

Don't Ask Me no Questions - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Waiting for the End of the World - Elvis Costello

Fat Man in the Bathtub - Little Feat

Feats Don't Fail Me Now ..

Feats Don't Fail Me Now .. gosh, haven't thought of the great Little Feat for a while!

Yay Jack - hardly anyone I know likes them

most don't know of them. They were a great band

Damn you Bal... an

Damn you Bal... an inpossible task.

Just some songs that touched me at some point in this thing we call time..

SEE EMILY PLAY - Pink Floyd

PENNY LANE - The Beatles

ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER - Hendrix

RIDERS ON THE STORM - The Doors

GOOD VIBRATIONS - Beach Boys

BLACK MAGIC WOMAN - Santana

PAINT IT BLACK - Rolling Stones

WHITE ROOM - Cream

BLOWIN' IN THE WIND - Bob Dylan

MENDICINO - Kate & Anna McGarrigle

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

Great List Jack

It is impossible. I was going to put All Along the Watchtower on my 60's but wasn't sure when he recorded it or when he died so I picked another one.

I don't remember See Emily Play and am a Pink Floyd fan so I'll have to go listen to it.

The other one I've never heard of is Medicino - I'll have to try and listen to it also.

See Emily is either their

See Emily is either their first or second single. Co-Written by the mad Syd Barrett.

Sounds as fresh today (to me) as the day they recorded it!

Think Watchtower was 67.

The 80's

No particular order again
Birth School Work Death - The Godfathers
You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
Hard to Handle - Black Crows
Let Love Rule - Lenny Kravitz
Should I Stay or Should I Go - The Clash
Bringing on the Heart Break - Def Leppard
Bullet the Blue Sky - U2
Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies
Pictures of Matchstick Men - Camper Van Beethoven
Love Shack - B52's

Lenny Kravitz is good in ANY decade

Lenny Kravitz is good in ANY decade...heh heh. You Shook Me by AC/DC is definitely there. I'd say "Born in the USA" might warrant a listing.

The answer to terrorism IS war. Next Please!

GAT - I know a lot of people love Springsteen

but I never got into him. AC/DC is also good for any decade.

Must add The Pretenders

Message of Love. I heard a new song by them today and realized that leaving them off the 80's was a huge omission.

Message of Love, Brass in Pocket, 2000 miles, Bad Boys Get Spanked, Middle of the Road, Back in the Chain Gang, I Go to Sleep, Stop Your Sobbing, Thin Line between love and hate. Too many to mention. Pretenders and Chrissie Hynde were the best unique thing to come out of the 80's.

I hope this new album can hold a candle to the 80's stuff.

The 90's

No order

Give it Away - RHCP

The Old Apartment - Bare Naked Ladies

Loser or Beercan - Beck

Lightening Crashes - Live

What It's Like -Everlast

Broken Hearted Savior - Big Head Todd and the Mosters

Glory and Consequence - Ben Harper

Creep - Radiohead

La Dolly Vita - Smashing Pumpkins

What I Got - Sublime

I'm not sure I can narrow it to just 10, but

My top political song pick for a certain Republican primary candidate to actually pay to license (but they didn't) was the Stealers Wheel early '70s classic, "Stuck In The Middle With You." Given all the clowns & jokers around at the time, my reasons should be obvious.

Gerry Rafferty is a complete... well won't say it here! But it involves mind altering substances.

Fascinating

That song is repeatedly referenced in various fora, to the point that it now even has its own evil Wikipage.

The 00's

This one is the most volatile because you have know way of knowing if they will have staying power.

Spread Your love Like a Fever/Berlin - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Flake - Jack Johnson
I am Trying to Break Your Heart - Wilco
Doesn't Remind Me - Audioslave
I Got Mine - Black Keys
Essense - Lucinda Williams
Front Porch Lounger - G. Love
Wake Up - Arcade Fire
Touch Feel Lose - Ryan Adams
You Don't Know What Love is - White Stripes

wow dee

I haven't heard of a single one of those.

Here's my list from this decade in no particular order:

How You Remind Me - Nickelback

Because of You - Kelly Clarkson

What Was I Thinking - Deirks Bentley

Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day

Lose Yourself - Eminem

Unwritten - Natasha Beddingfield

White Flag - Dido

Tonight and the Rest of My Life - Nina Gordon

Sweet Escape - Gwen Stefani

Black Horse and a Cherry Tree - KT Tunstall

Honorable Mentions to Train for Calling All Angels and Matchbox 20 for How Far We've Come.

Candance - I should have done some Youtube

links but it was hard enough making the lists. I love How You Remind Me by Nickleback and if you like that I bet you would like "Doesn't Remind Me" by Audioslave (who are no longer together). It's opposite, but very good.

Oh man, I love Flake. I

Oh man, I love Flake. I need to add some Ryan Adams, but I wouldn't know where to start; probably Come Pick Me Up or Sweet Carolina. That line at the end "I miss Kentucky and I miss my family/Oh the sweetest winds blow across the South" gives me goosebumps every time. I could use some Wilco too, especially their Mermaid Avenue collaboration w/ Billy Bragg.

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

This is so difficult. No

This is so difficult. No particular order, every favorite genre represented at least once:

Mama Wolf - Devendra Banhart

Blue Turns to Grey - Stones

Lay Me Down a Pallet on Your Floor - Traditional  (but my preferred version is by The Powder Kegs)

Gymnopedies - Erik Satie

Dopeman - N.W.A.

Fruits of my Labor/Right in Time - Lucinda Williams

The Charging Sky - Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins

Promising Light - Iron and Wine

Una Furtiva Lagrima - Enrico Caruso (Pavarotti nails it too, though)

Caleb Meyer - Gillian Welch

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

Honorable Mention (several

Honorable Mention (several inspired by Dee's post-2000 list):

Flake - Jack Johnson

Gone - Jack Johnson

Oh My Sweet Carolina - Ryan Adams

Bob Dylan's entire catalog, up to and including Blood on the Tracks

To Live is to Fly - Townes Van Zandt

Come Pick Me Up
- Ryan Adams

La Cienga Just Smiled - Ryan Adams

Afraid Not Scared - Ryan Adams

Where is my Love? - Lucinda Williams

Drinking at the Dam - Smog

Everything on Patty Griffin's Living with Ghosts album

Damn you, Bal, now I'm just gonna be messing around on iTunes all afternoon and not get any work done. Damn yoooouuuu!

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

JC, it's a great topic.

JC, it's a great topic. Hard to resist. :-)

Come Pick Me Up... Elizabethtown soundtrack. Great music.

So good. Did you watch the

So good. Did you watch the video I linked of him playing on Letterman? Dave, for some reason, just keeps mispronouncing everything about the song and album, which is very funny, but Ryan's performance is just sublime.

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

Jason - Letterman Loves Ryan Adams

they are personal friends and he has him on all the time. I have a bunch of them saved on a Youtube list. Ryan Adams is awesome live. He outdoes his studio performances when he's live in the same way Wilco does.

Here's my youtube list that has about 16 of his performances (I can't get enough of him live). The list was originally all Letterman performances but then I kept adding to it.

Ryan on Letterman

The one thing I would add

The one thing I would add to my list that I didn't originally have is practically anything from Ben Folds. That's another great live performer.

Alright Jason! Lucinda!

If you haven't heard Essence you must listen - it's one of the sexist songs.

How great that you like Wilco and Ryan Adams too - I love that southern alternative rock. I'm like a groupie for Wilco I've seen them so many times. If you haven't seen them live you have to some time. They are so creative and their studio albums make them seem like they are much more mellow than they are.

Now besides Lucinda - I haven't heard of any of yours so you have to clue me in a little about what type of music they are so I know if I want to try some of it.

Dee, I love Lucinda. For

Dee, I love Lucinda. For our first anniversary yesterday, my wife surprised me with tickets to see her next month. I can't wait.

Gillian Welch is the modern Emmylou Harris, in my mind. I prefer the studio version, but this still gives a good idea of her beautiful voice.

Here is a very funny music video for my second favorite Jenny Lewis song.

Patty Griffin is a sort of country/gospel singer, and her singing is just achingly beautiful. I can't find anything good on youtube, but let me recommend that you risk the 99 cents on iTunes to get either "Moses" or "Time will do the talking".

I forgot to put up Cat Power and Old Crow Medicine Show, but they are also big favorites of mine. As you can see, I too am hugely into alt country and early country/Americana.

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

Happy anniversary Jason

I didn't realize your marriage was that new.

I love Cat Power and originally had her on my list but figured no one would have heard of her. Did you see the film "My Blueberry Nights"? She makes a cameo in it and they use a couple of her songs. Norah Jones plays the lead. It got panned by the critics. I liked it though - it's very different and not for everyone but you like different stuff so you might enjoy it also.

I'm surprised you like the Alt Country and folk kind of stuff being an Eastern boy. Lucinda is great in Concert. Her voice is so emotive and she can really rock on songs like "Real Live Bleeding Fingers"

Thanks, Dee. Haven't seen

Thanks, Dee.

Haven't seen the movie, but it sounds like it's worth checking out. I have all of Cat Power's CDs I think, they're so great.

I think you'd definitely like Patty Griffin. She's got kind of a Christian folk/gospel thing going. Beautiful stuff.

Yeah, Lucinda can just nail so many different kinds of songs. The first time I heard "Fruits of my Labor" (which was the first time I heard Lucinda at all) I must have hit the repeat button 9 or 10 times in a row.

I'll always be a New Englander at heart, but the kind of music I like most makes me want to move to Kentucky or Tennessee.

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

I love me some Lucinda Williams

I've seen her 3 times live.  I agree with Dee that "Essence" is one sexy damn song!  But I also love "St. Charles" and so many more.

If you like non-Nashville country, try these for gooder n hell music:

Dale Watson, Hank III, Eleven Hundred Springs, Gary P. Nunn, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Jerry Jeff Walker, Billy Joe Shaver, Robert Earl Keen.  I know most of these are Texas music but hell, it's the best anyway!

Jeff Lebowski

www.angrywhitedude.c...

Yay - another Lucinda fan!

I was wondering if true country fans normally also liked alt. Country.

I'm not into the more regular country except when I'm in TX. I love to go to bars where people do the two step and I love the small dive places with little honky tonk bands and I even saw a Clint Black stadium concert in the Astrodome and enjoyed it.

Regular country just isn't the type of thing I listen to by myself at home or in the car.

Dee, Nashville pop-country stinks!

Texas honky tonk is the real thing.  I would rather eat glass than listen to that Nashville crap.  Took my special lady to see Dale Watson at the local honky tonk last Friday.  Like I said earlier, it's gooder n hell music and once you get hooked it opens up a whole new world.

I saw you like Ryan Adams.  Before Whiskeytown was big and he was out of Raleigh, he used to wait for Caitlyn Cary to get off of work where she waitressed at The Humble Pie.  While he waited, he would write lyrics on napkins because he didn't have any money for notebooks. My friend loves that place and got to know Ryan and actually bought him a big sketch book to write his lyrics on.  Never realized he'd get so big.  I love Whiskeytown to this day.

Jeff Lebowski

www.angrywhitedude.c...

Jeff - Pop Country is a good discription

that's what I don't like. Although as I said, I still enjoyed the Clint Black Concert live.

I saw an interview with Ryan once where he seemed very offended by being referred to as alt. Country. The interviewer asked him how he'd describe his music and he said just good old rock n roll. I thought that was strange because he obviously has a southern country twang to his music.

How cool that your friend bought him a tablet.

I never really thought about it before you just described the other stuff as Pop-Country, but I don't really like other pop music so it makes sense. It's not the style of music so much as the creativity in the lyrics and sound that draw me in.

I have "Bloodied but Unbowed: Bloodshot Records' Life in the Trenches" from Netflix right now (but haven't watched it yet) . I got it specifically because Ryan Adams is in it. I haven't heard of the rest of the artists but am hoping to discover new ones to love.

I love Robert Earl Keen,

I love Robert Earl Keen, although he occasionally dips a bit too much into the pop-country scene for my taste. Doesn't get much better than 'Feelin' Good Again' or 'Corpus Christi Bay' or just about anything off of No Kinda Dancer, though.

Jeff, do you like Old Crow Medicine Show at all? They're from Nashville, but they just blow that scene out of the water...

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

What album is Essence

What album is Essence on?

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

Jason - the album is called Essence also

You must get it before you go. It's one of her best IMO. I love them all though so it's hard to actually say that. It's really good though

Jason - here's a youtube

performance of the song Essence

Wow, that is

Wow, that is good.

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

Off to the iTunes

Off to the iTunes store!

It's a tough call for me too. Did you like West? It took a few listens for me - I didn't care for it at first - but now I like it a lot.

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."

Yeah - I liked West

but not as much as the others. I saw her the year that came out and it always helps to see the live show. I love "Come On" and "Wrap My head Around That" and "Learning how to Live" makes me cry every time. It has the same effect as "Wish You Were Here" from Pink Floyd. Even though the songs are about romantic loss, they make me think of family members I've lost.

Her mom had died just before she recorded those songs and I think that Learning how to live is really about her even though it seems like it's about a man.

I think Soundgarden and Chris Cornell are so underrated. "Seasons" from the Singles soundtrack. "Spoonman."

I agree balboa and so is Audioslave

I haven't listened to any of his new solo stuff but I'm sure it's probably good too.

Chris Cornell is the best

He's the Michael Phelps of singing- no comparison

Soundgarden

I loved Badmotorfinger and Superunknown but absolutely hated Down on the Upside.

Chris Cornell is indeed a good vocalist.  Not the best.  Underrated to be sure, but not the best.

I agree with you both Semp and Unsane

his voice is one of the best ever.

Male vocalists

A man-crush?  Time for me to play "Careless Whisper" by Wham!

Don't get me wrong; I don't think Cornell gets nearly enough credit.  But for my money, Geoff Tate, Russell Allen and James LaBrie are way, way better.

Shawn - I almost put Beds are Burning

that's a great song. These lists are so hard because it's impossible to include everything.

I love "Against All Odds" the song and the movie. It's a little cheesy (the movie) but it's still one of my favs from the 80's

Hi Dee

Its impossible to choose when it comes to music, there is so much. Speaking of Midnight Oil, do you think their lead singer and Axel Rose learned their moves from Davie Jones? ffw 50 seconds lol :-)

He isn't fates in my opinion.

Just another troll...doing his thing..he gets let out every now and then, it will be worse before the election, much worse.

I think it's sort of amusing nobody noticed before when he was critiquing me against some other posters here who all ganged up with him, didn't seem to think he was a troll back then, let alone fates.

No Leonard Cohen fans on NB?

Leonard Cohen is one of my all time faves.  His lyrics are so beautiful that you feel part of the song.  If anyone wants any recommendations for trying him out...let me know.

1) Led Zeppelin, "Kashmir"
