August 19, 2008 - 14:51 ET by TruthMongeri got way too many faves, but I can list the songs I find utterly reprehensible and beyond crappy:
1. should i stay or should i go (yes please for the love of god gtf out of here once and for all)
2. i kissed a girl and i liked it (unless it's sung by a gay dude - walk towards the light my friend!)

7. there she is, miss america
8. opening song for conan obrien - in fact, i even hate conan obrien with a passion - he's not funny, he's a dave knock-off - and dave is an incredible dink now - which makes conan a cheap knock off of a dink
9. the newsbusted tune (this is not a mosh pit)
10. i got u babe, i got u babe, i got u babe, i got uuuuuuuu...

my favorite songs
August 13, 2008 - 15:27 ET by candanceIt would be way too hard for me to form a top ten out of all the songs I know. However here are some secular songs that immediately come to mind, organized by genre:
Pop
Rock
Alternative
Country
Dance
Hard Rock
Most of the time (now) I listen to Christian stuff not found on YouTube. But I do like some secular stuff.

August 19, 2008 - 14:11 ET by Dee BunkIt is impossible. I was going to put All Along the Watchtower on my 60's but wasn't sure when he recorded it or when he died so I picked another one.
I don't remember See Emily Play and am a Pink Floyd fan so I'll have to go listen to it.
The other one I've never heard of is Medicino - I'll have to try and listen to it also.

Must add The Pretenders
August 21, 2008 - 10:23 ET by Dee BunkMessage of Love. I heard a new song by them today and realized that leaving them off the 80's was a huge omission.
Message of Love, Brass in Pocket, 2000 miles, Bad Boys Get Spanked, Middle of the Road, Back in the Chain Gang, I Go to Sleep, Stop Your Sobbing, Thin Line between love and hate. Too many to mention. Pretenders and Chrissie Hynde were the best unique thing to come out of the 80's.
I hope this new album can hold a candle to the 80's stuff.
The 90's

August 19, 2008 - 14:30 ET by JasonCOh man, I love Flake. I need to add some Ryan Adams, but I wouldn't know where to start; probably Come Pick Me Up or Sweet Carolina. That line at the end "I miss Kentucky and I miss my family/Oh the sweetest winds blow across the South" gives me goosebumps every time. I could use some Wilco too, especially their Mermaid Avenue collaboration w/ Billy Bragg.

August 19, 2008 - 15:22 ET by JasonCSo good. Did you watch the video I linked of him playing on Letterman? Dave, for some reason, just keeps mispronouncing everything about the song and album, which is very funny, but Ryan's performance is just sublime.

Jason - Letterman Loves Ryan Adams
August 19, 2008 - 15:47 ET by Dee Bunkthey are personal friends and he has him on all the time. I have a bunch of them saved on a Youtube list. Ryan Adams is awesome live. He outdoes his studio performances when he's live in the same way Wilco does.
Here's my youtube list that has about 16 of his performances (I can't get enough of him live). The list was originally all Letterman performances but then I kept adding to it.
Ryan on Letterman
The one thing I would add
August 19, 2008 - 16:01 ET by balboaThe one thing I would add to my list that I didn't originally have is practically anything from Ben Folds. That's another great live performer.
Alright Jason! Lucinda!
August 19, 2008 - 14:43 ET by Dee BunkIf you haven't heard Essence you must listen - it's one of the sexist songs.
How great that you like Wilco and Ryan Adams too - I love that southern alternative rock. I'm like a groupie for Wilco I've seen them so many times. If you haven't seen them live you have to some time. They are so creative and their studio albums make them seem like they are much more mellow than they are.
Now besides Lucinda - I haven't heard of any of yours so you have to clue me in a little about what type of music they are so I know if I want to try some of it.
Dee, I love Lucinda. For
August 19, 2008 - 15:03 ET by JasonCDee, I love Lucinda. For our first anniversary yesterday, my wife surprised me with tickets to see her next month. I can't wait.
Gillian Welch is the modern Emmylou Harris, in my mind. I prefer the studio version, but this still gives a good idea of her beautiful voice.
Here is a very funny music video for my second favorite Jenny Lewis song.
Patty Griffin is a sort of country/gospel singer, and her singing is just achingly beautiful. I can't find anything good on youtube, but let me recommend that you risk the 99 cents on iTunes to get either "Moses" or "Time will do the talking".
I forgot to put up Cat Power and Old Crow Medicine Show, but they are also big favorites of mine. As you can see, I too am hugely into alt country and early country/Americana.
"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."
Happy anniversary Jason
August 19, 2008 - 15:18 ET by Dee BunkI didn't realize your marriage was that new.
I love Cat Power and originally had her on my list but figured no one would have heard of her. Did you see the film "My Blueberry Nights"? She makes a cameo in it and they use a couple of her songs. Norah Jones plays the lead. It got panned by the critics. I liked it though - it's very different and not for everyone but you like different stuff so you might enjoy it also.
I'm surprised you like the Alt Country and folk kind of stuff being an Eastern boy. Lucinda is great in Concert. Her voice is so emotive and she can really rock on songs like "Real Live Bleeding Fingers"
Thanks, Dee. Haven't seen
August 19, 2008 - 15:29 ET by JasonCThanks, Dee.
Haven't seen the movie, but it sounds like it's worth checking out. I have all of Cat Power's CDs I think, they're so great.
I think you'd definitely like Patty Griffin. She's got kind of a Christian folk/gospel thing going. Beautiful stuff.
Yeah, Lucinda can just nail so many different kinds of songs. The first time I heard "Fruits of my Labor" (which was the first time I heard Lucinda at all) I must have hit the repeat button 9 or 10 times in a row.
I'll always be a New Englander at heart, but the kind of music I like most makes me want to move to Kentucky or Tennessee.
"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."
I love me some Lucinda Williams
August 19, 2008 - 23:34 ET by jefflebowskiI've seen her 3 times live. I agree with Dee that "Essence" is one sexy damn song! But I also love "St. Charles" and so many more.
If you like non-Nashville country, try these for gooder n hell music:
Dale Watson, Hank III, Eleven Hundred Springs, Gary P. Nunn, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, Jerry Jeff Walker, Billy Joe Shaver, Robert Earl Keen. I know most of these are Texas music but hell, it's the best anyway!

Yay - another Lucinda fan!
August 19, 2008 - 23:55 ET by Dee BunkI was wondering if true country fans normally also liked alt. Country.
I'm not into the more regular country except when I'm in TX. I love to go to bars where people do the two step and I love the small dive places with little honky tonk bands and I even saw a Clint Black stadium concert in the Astrodome and enjoyed it.
Regular country just isn't the type of thing I listen to by myself at home or in the car.
Dee, Nashville pop-country stinks!
August 20, 2008 - 00:06 ET by jefflebowskiTexas honky tonk is the real thing. I would rather eat glass than listen to that Nashville crap. Took my special lady to see Dale Watson at the local honky tonk last Friday. Like I said earlier, it's gooder n hell music and once you get hooked it opens up a whole new world.
I saw you like Ryan Adams. Before Whiskeytown was big and he was out of Raleigh, he used to wait for Caitlyn Cary to get off of work where she waitressed at The Humble Pie. While he waited, he would write lyrics on napkins because he didn't have any money for notebooks. My friend loves that place and got to know Ryan and actually bought him a big sketch book to write his lyrics on. Never realized he'd get so big. I love Whiskeytown to this day.

Jeff - Pop Country is a good discription
August 20, 2008 - 07:31 ET by Dee Bunkthat's what I don't like. Although as I said, I still enjoyed the Clint Black Concert live.
I saw an interview with Ryan once where he seemed very offended by being referred to as alt. Country. The interviewer asked him how he'd describe his music and he said just good old rock n roll. I thought that was strange because he obviously has a southern country twang to his music.
How cool that your friend bought him a tablet.
I never really thought about it before you just described the other stuff as Pop-Country, but I don't really like other pop music so it makes sense. It's not the style of music so much as the creativity in the lyrics and sound that draw me in.
I have "Bloodied but Unbowed: Bloodshot Records' Life in the Trenches" from Netflix right now (but haven't watched it yet) . I got it specifically because Ryan Adams is in it. I haven't heard of the rest of the artists but am hoping to discover new ones to love.
I love Robert Earl Keen,
August 20, 2008 - 08:57 ET by JasonCI love Robert Earl Keen, although he occasionally dips a bit too much into the pop-country scene for my taste. Doesn't get much better than 'Feelin' Good Again' or 'Corpus Christi Bay' or just about anything off of No Kinda Dancer, though.
Jeff, do you like Old Crow Medicine Show at all? They're from Nashville, but they just blow that scene out of the water...

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose
appetite for steak is greatly enhanced by his contempt for vegetarians."
Yeah - I liked West
August 19, 2008 - 16:01 ET by Dee Bunkbut not as much as the others. I saw her the year that came out and it always helps to see the live show. I love "Come On" and "Wrap My head Around That" and "Learning how to Live" makes me cry every time. It has the same effect as "Wish You Were Here" from Pink Floyd. Even though the songs are about romantic loss, they make me think of family members I've lost.
Her mom had died just before she recorded those songs and I think that Learning how to live is really about her even though it seems like it's about a man.

August 19, 2008 - 18:36 ET by Dee Bunkthat's a great song. These lists are so hard because it's impossible to include everything.
I love "Against All Odds" the song and the movie. It's a little cheesy (the movie) but it's still one of my favs from the 80's
Hi Dee
August 19, 2008 - 19:01 ET by shawn228Its impossible to choose when it comes to music, there is so much. Speaking of Midnight Oil, do you think their lead singer and Axel Rose learned their moves from Davie Jones? ffw 50 seconds lol :-)

August 19, 2008 - 23:30 ET by bigtimerI think gingerman is gingerman...his own troll...he has been here a long time.
He isn't fates in my opinion.
Just another troll...doing his thing..he gets let out every now and then, it will be worse before the election, much worse.
I think it's sort of amusing nobody noticed before when he was critiquing me against some other posters here who all ganged up with him, didn't seem to think he was a troll back then, let alone fates.
...all trolls aren't somebody else from the past..he just keeps himself in storage...needs air every once in awhile.

2. Hip To Be Square - a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But
they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity,
and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the
band itself.
No Leonard Cohen fans on NB?
August 19, 2008 - 23:37 ET by jefflebowskiLeonard Cohen is one of my all time faves. His lyrics are so beautiful that you feel part of the song. If anyone wants any recommendations for trying him out...let me know.
