The FCC was created to manage the airwaves in order to guarantee that something broadcast on them does not destroy something else broadcast on them.. in other words to manage the law of physics that two objects should not occupy the same space at the same time. If the early work of the FCC did not exist, radio stations would be broadcasting on top of each other - on the same frequencies. This is the charter of the FCC and what it was created to do. Today the FCC has lost its way and is more concerned with Janet Jackson's nipple and Howard Stern's rantings than it is with broadcasts overlapping and being unusable. WiFi networking was released on the 2.4 ghz frequency range - licensed and approved by the FCC, So were 2.4 ghz cordless phones, speaker systems and remote conrol extenders. In an affluent home that attempts to use all of these things - it is possible to have none of them function since they "talk" over each others attempts to communicate. Instead of regulating or even suggesting that these devices be on different bands, the FCC makes headlines worried about what Al Bundy had to say on FOX's Married with Children... The FCC commisioners found that they could gain more prestige by excercising the "moral decency" clauses in the FCC license agreements for public broadcast stations than they could be doing their real job of managing emerging wireless technologies. The FCC should be disbanded and reconsitituted as two agencies if that is what the American public really wants, one that handles the technical aspects of broadcast and a second that worries about decency and content. The existing agency is doing neither with any consistancy or quality.
