Thompson to Des Moines Register, "If a state chose to recognize it (gay marriage) and the Governor signed off and signed it into legislation so be it."

This shows there is no fight in Thompson to affect social conservative issues. Many are mad at his lazy attitude towards these vitally important issues. Arnold almost signed a change to traditional marriage, and did sign a vast gay indoctrination bill. Is this a "so be it" thing for Thompson also? This cavalier attitude does not help get conservatives to the polls.

David Brody on the subject" You see, let me try and explain what’s going on here. The millions of religious conservatives who are adamantly for a strict federal marriage amendment believe that marriage IS a one size fits all approach. Thompson is trying the federalism track here but here’s where he gets into trouble. Let’s take slavery for example. Hypothetically, if a state legislature approves slavery and a Governor signs it into law, then “so be it”? Of course not. Well, I would suggest that the majority of religious conservatives believe that protecting the institution of marriage is one of those issues that trump the federalist argument. Many would argue that traditional marriage, just like abolishing slavery should be a one size fits all approach.

Update: This is a huge motivation for voters to come to the polls. The only top tier canidate that has fought for and supports an amendment is Romney. This is the only way to differentiate yourself from Hillary who is also against gay marriage.
