Tampa Bay Bucs
Atlanta Falcons

NFC North

Chicago Bears

Kickoff does not begin for another 2 weeks so I will not predict a
SuperBowl winner yet. The Colts look good to repeat, but Brady now has
Randy Moss to throw to. Can Randy Moss return to pro bowl form? Can
Norv Turner take Ladanian Tomlinson to his first playoff victory? Can the Falcons win without Vick" they could not win with him either" It has been a long wait, but you guys ready for some football?

Shawns Predictions

I love to watch many sports. Never really liked to watch Gulf but I enjoy watching Basketball, hockey, tennis and baseball.

The NFL is the one I look the most forward to. I cannot wait until the start of this season. I did not pick a superbowl winner because my predictions could be blown out of the water within the first month. Anyone could win on any given Sunday. Any other predictions out there?

the superbowl

goes through Foxbourgh

“The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”   -Chief Justice John Roberts

botg

You could be right botg. Lets hope Brady concentrates on football instead of making babies with his ex and dating supermodels:-)

Donte

Stallworth will be a bigger key than Moss.

Adalius Thomas added to the linebackers, Junior healthy for his limited situation role.  Rodney healthy.

All-in-all they have upped their game while the other top teams held or slipped a little.

and Brady? not that i condone his bx but it worked for Namath

“The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”   -Chief Justice John Roberts

botg

If Brady was a figure skater, he would never fall while doing a triple spin. I never saw a quarterback so cool under pressure since Montana.

AFC West

Very true.  Fortunately, he sucks when he plays the Broncos.

(People actually think the Chefs will do worse than the Raiduhs?  I am kind of surprised by that.  And really, it is too bad that the Chargers' weakest link will again be coaching.  Norv Turner just isn't it...but then, neither was Chokenheimer.)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Unsane

Unsane,

I am hoping the Raiduhs have a decent season. I feel blessed just like where you live, we have lots of professional sports to choose from in the bay area. 2 football teams, 2 baseball teams, one hockey team and even though our basketball team sucked for many years, they beat they eliminated the best team"record wise" in the NBA from the playoffs last year

You live in the LS state and like the Spurs and Mavs. U a Cowboy or Texan fan as well?

Chokenheimer can't win in the playoffs, Turner cannot seem to win the regular season either. He is much more suited to be a offensive coordinator. The chargers sure have re covered from that "Ryan Leaf" debacle. Instead of having Eli Manning and Michael Vick, they now have Ladanian Tomlinson, Phillip Rivers, Shawn Merriman and had Drew Brees.

shawn

don't forget Antonio Gates

Supreme Court,  National Security,  Borders,  Fiscal Restraint, my litmus test for President.

botg

Umm.....yeah. Tight ends don't really count :-) Just kidding. I wonder why they don't utilize him more at wide receive. He is built just like Terrell Owens.

NFL

Rumors of me being a Mavs fan (being a San Antonio native) are grossly exaggerated.

My loyalties are as follows:

Football: Broncos

Baseball: Astros

Basketball: Spurs

I am hoping the Raiduhs do not have a decent season.  I despise the Raiduhs, the Chefs, and the Chargers.  The only thing that will make me happy this football season is the Broncos taking over the AFC West (admittedly a tall order with the Chargers in that division, but I can dream).

I disagree with your assessment that the Colts will be Super Bowl material, as they are hobbling right out the gate.  (Barring that,I would have to agree.)  The AFC will have total war on its hands, as all the legit Super Bowl contenders are there.  I also take issue with your kind words on Randy Moss.  On him, I'll Believe It When I See It.  Yes, the vets on that team might keep his head screwed on straight, but it was also thought that Reid and McNabb, combined with being on the cusp of Super Bowl greatness, would keep T.O. in line.  (Didn't happen.)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Unsane

As you know I spend  a lot of my upbringing in your favorite going nowhere country:) I always liked the Dallas Cowboys. Since I have lived in the Bay Area, I thought it would be appropiate to support the local teams here.

I went to my first Raiduhs game about 7 yrs ago. Just by coincidence they were playing the Denver Broncos. It was one of the most interesting things I have ever experienced. I have been to a Niner game before, but nothing could prepare me for the sea of silver and black and the black hole. Please do not interpret questioning if Randy Moss can return to pro bowl form as a kind words. He was with the Raiders for 2 yrs and he did ***k all!

Anyways if Jay Cutler plays his first year as starter as well as Phillip Rivers last year, he will do very well. There must be something special about that Denver offensive line because it seems no matter who is the running back, they tend to get 1000+ yards. Travis Henry kind of reminds me of a young Emmitt Smith.

The Colts might be slow out of the gate, but I believe they lost most of their pre season games last year. We know the end result of last season right?

On the CFL, NFL, SB XLII

Now that you bring that up (Canada, that is)...what do YOU care about the NFL...eh?  Where's your CFL thread?

One of my life's ambitions is to go to a Broncos-Raiduhs game in Oakland.  Face-painted, wearing a Bronco jersey, and well liquored up so that when the blows began to land, I won't feel them.  Oh, and, of course, walk up to Darth Raiduh himself, shove him, and yell "WHAT UP, B*!CH?  WE ARE HERE TO COLLECT THE RENT!!!"  (or something to that effect)

Needless to say, when I tell Raiduh fans this, they all ask if "you want to f%#king DIE???"  For the answer: what's my SN again?  :-)

Hey, I see you are being quite the homer as well.  I am big a homer as any and I STILL won't pick my Broncos to win the division...I just dream they will.  I saw the Niners make some great strides last season...but being a homer aside, do you REALLY think they have enough to win the division?  I say it's possible, but until I see otherwise, I am picking Seattle to grab the NFC West.

I base nothing on pre-season.  (I leave that to stupid Cowboy fans, and as much as I love the Lone Star State, the greatest embarrassment this state has, along with Austin, are the myopic, arrogant Cowboy fans.)  However, the injuries in Indy are the concern.  I didn't see much of them re-loading/re-arming as I saw other teams do.  Plus, teams will be gunning for them harder now.  Add Jacksonville (any takers on what they will do? On paper they look awesome but they are consistently inconsistent) and Tennessee to the divisional mix, and things could not go so well for Indy this season. The locals also love to brag about how they beat Indy late last season.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

CFL

Don't knock he CFL, having only 3 downs and a bigger field makes for exciting football:) My BC Lions won the Grey Cup last yr. Warren Moon, Doug Flutie and Jeff Garcia and Rocket Ishmail proved they can play with the big boys.

Exciting! ad nauseum

There's the word "exciting" again...what did I tell you about "exciting"? That "exciting" is not always synonymous with "best"??? :-) One other thing about the CFL you didn't mention: no fair catches. No chickening out of running kickoffs and punts in that league...unless you get really scared and run out of bounds. (You may remember that they tried expanding the CFL to the United States but it didn't pan out, as San Antonians can attest. But then, San Antonio is the land of failed football leagues [USFL, World League, etc.] Why they didn't try an XFL team here I had no idea. Probably because they knew that would be the kiss of death.)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Excitement=ratings

Excitment does not always mean they are the best. I realize that. Sometimes you can have the best of both worlds....ie Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson"in his prime" Peyton Manning, Kobe Bryant, Shaq.

Your Spurs were an amazing team this year, they were almost text book perfect, unfortunately even if they are the world champions they will not sell as many tickets on the road as the Lakers, Suns or Cleveland and Lebron.

That is why I will miss watching Michael Vick play. There have been great running quarterbacks in the past, I do not think we will see another quarterback that can break 50+ yards on a single play for a long time. Excitement is also why they paid more money to Oscar De La Hoya than Floyd Mayweather, even though Floyd is the better boxer.

More on markets, football, excitement, general rambling

I guess I am a contrarian in that regard.  I don't need a lot of "excitement", just a lot of skill.

The biggest reason why the Spurs don't sell much on the road is because they are such a tiny market.  For comparison: Houston is #10 and San Antonio is #37 (last time I looked) in media markets.  San Antonio barely exists in the American consciousness, even if it is the eighth largest city in the United States.  If I meet someone outside of town that has heard of San Antonio, I am compelled to ask of they are military, and 9 times out of 10, they have a military connection.  (Virtually everyone in the USAF spends a minimum of eight weeks of their lives in San Antonio - typically, their very first eight weeks in the USAF.)

San Antonio has a small "diaspora", if you will - most people there are content to remain there, especially native San Antonians - unlike major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles or New York, who have many people strung out across the country that have some sort of connection to those cities (examples all) and retain their loyalties to those cities.  (You see this all the time at Houston sporting events, especially since Houston expanded so friggin rapidly in comparison with the other major cities.  Many Houstonians are really from somewhere else.)

Michael Vick was a great runner, and I LOVE scramblers (as John Elway is my football hero from my early days of football fan-dom), but the man has got to pass at some point.  It is disappointing that we won't see him paired with some nice receivers, so that I can detect if the problem was with him passing the ball or if it was with the receiver corps in ATL.  But, he made some incredibly stupid decisions and he will have to pay the price.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

excitement and skill

'I guess I am a contrarian in that regard. I don't need a lot of "excitement", just a lot of skill. "

Well that is why I would not look forward to a Chicago Bears vs Baltimore Ravens game. All that defensive skill can lead up to a 7-6 score:)

I agree with your San Antonio analysis to a point. How many arenas did the Cavaliers sell out before they got Lebron James?

Cleveland vs San Antonio

Admittedly, what differentiates Cleveland in that regard is the other sports their fans can indulge in (granted, nothing to get to thrilled about, and lots of heartbreak, since the 1960s).  In San Antonio, the Spurs are IT, unless you count the Missions minor-league baseball, and I don't.  Thus, if the Cavs sucked, there was the Cleveland Indians (respectable runs in the 1990s) and the Browns after a brief absence.

Even when the Spurs were down briefly in the mid to late 1980s, and in 1996-1997, fans clung to all hope for them, because largely that was all we had back then.  Why?  They were the only game in town.

Cleveland also has a larger media market than the Spurs do, and, because they are the only NBA team in that state, they can pull in all of OH, perhaps KY and even possibly PA.

I would MUCH rather watch a Bears-Ravens game with plenty of defensive skill by two outstanding defensive units rather than watch two teams with mediocre offenses AND defenses go at it for 60 minutes and produce a 6-3 score with NO turnovers OR touchdowns.  That has happened twice in NFL history.  Unfortunately, I saw one of those games on television (ugh).

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Only game in town

"In San Antonio, the Spurs are IT, unless you count the Missions minor-league baseball, and I don't."

The same can be seen about The Green Bay Packers, but there are many cheeseheads in this country. They can sell out stadiums on the road, I suspect even when Brett Favre retires.

Oh and to answer your earlier question, yes I am going out on a limb picking the niners to win their division, but this is Alex Smiths third year and he is getting better and better. If that Frank Gore can keep his knees healthy he will be a serious threat. My main concern is their wide receiver core. I am hoping former Bronco Ashley Lelie can play to his true potential.

On Lelie

Bear in mind that if Atlanta let go Ashley Lelie, there MIGHT be a good reason for it.  As I say, the Niners have good upside and potential...but do they have enough to win the NFC West?

The Packers...are slightly different, in the sense that there are major league teams closer by (the Bucks and the Brewers).  Contrast that with San Antonio, whose fans must drive to see pro football or MLB (280 miles to Dallas and 200 miles to Houston).

My game Picks

Couple of things I agree except:

Vikings D is going to give the Falcons fits and Peterson should run well...Vikings will win

Chargers/Bears-  This one hinges on Grossman.  Zero Mistakes da Bears win.  Let us not forget the Chargers have one hell of a D too.  Sorry Lion King The Chargers in a close one. Too much LT.

The Raiders have got to come with their D or the Loins will walk the floor.  The Offense of the Raiders is, well it stinks.  They can't score. The Lions win.

The 49ers are improved but they can't get it done in the secondary.  To many weapons for Matty to hit.  Cardnals win in a nice little night cap Monday.

My homer pick of the week:  Panthers over the Rams on a last second field goal by Kasey.  Score 17-14.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Well well well

Well well well shawn...

We agree about some things after-all...

I will differ with you on the Texans vs Chiefs....and the Eagles vs Packers ....Cowboys vs Giants iffy....

LOL...

The Packers for BT

BT, The Packers could make the Playoffs in the Wild Card but I dought it.  Having the Bears and the Vikings to beat is going to be hard.  The Vikings have upgraded on offense and will put up some pionts.

Only if the Bears completely colaspe will the Packers see the top of the Division.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Af... LOL... I do not

Af...

LOL...

I do not think the Packers can make it to the top of anywhere...

I was just talking about the games shawn had listed...I was assuming for the week-end and next week.

The Colt for BT

I was just the discussing the game also and threw the BT thing in there for ya....I love Football season.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

bt

Excellent bt, I have decided to take a one month sabatical from talking politics on NB starting from last Wednesday, so unless you hate the Raiders or Niners as much as Hillary, you and I will have nothing to fight about lol:)

Are you a homer? Do you live in Indy or do you just root for them?

I hAVE ROOTED FOR THEM FOR

I hAVE ROOTED FOR THEM FOR OVER 15 YEARS...

...so anyway I was glad when they finally won the Super Bowl of course...

Same with the Steelers and the Bronco's with Elway years ago.

Packers too...

I just kind of pick underdogs sometime and hang with them for years..always have.

I am a west coast gal when it comes to football...so....

Sorry about the uppercase above..too lazy to correct it.

Hey Shawn.... So far I am

Hey Shawn....

So far I am 2 for 2...on what I posted above to where I differed with you.

Now on to the Giants vs the Cowboys... I am going to pick the Giants though since I said iffy..I got to pick one eh?

LOL....

Btw...did you catch that Bronco's game?

Talk about no time left.

LOL...

That was something else...to close to comfort for me.

Later...

come on bt:)

Ahhh come on bt, don't rub my nose it in, I have had a rough day:) My drunk friend that came to watch the game in the black hole with me and almost got into a few fights. Christ, I hate babysitting.

lol. Well I hope the niners game goes better tomorrow. I have the Cowboys game dvred so I will catch up shortly.

shawn,

I have had a rough day....

LOL- You've had a rough day? Yesterday, the Dogs lost to the GameChickens. Today, the Falcons played like, well, the Falcons. And it looks as though the Braves are probably going to miss the post season yet again.

The only bright spot around here was the fact that the Yellow Jackets beat the snot out of Samford in a game that absolutely nobody saw.

Geez, I guess things are getting back to normal around here.

"I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK!”- Rick Roberts

dave

lol.....Dave your right things are going tough for your city right now, but it looks like SF Giants have no chance for the playoffs and iffy for Oakland.

It can be fun at the Oakland stadium for a Raiders game, but when you get a bunch of drunk people together, and everyone is looking for a fight, it just ruins it for everybody.

LOL..Well so far shawn and

LOL..Well so far shawn and Dave...

I haven't had a great day either.

Nevertheless...so far looks like I am going to be 2 of 3 shawn.

Wasn't trying to rub anything in...Btw..does the iffy thing count?..ooops I know better I said I had to pick...just looks like I picked wrong here....lol

Be gone next week...most likely miss the next week-end thing here with all...

Catch up after that though...

Take care all.

'night, bt.

I'm out for the night, too.

"I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK!”- Rick Roberts

night bt and Dave, catch ya

night bt and Dave, catch ya guys soon:)

Yes, that bunch of rejects, AND the OdorMan!

I was going to watch the NBC Sunday Night Half-time show to get some highlights of the days games. The h/t show was awful; how is it possible to botch such a simple thing? I mean come on; the NFL teams have done all the work. Make a few dumb remarks and then play a bunch of great highlights and show the scores. To top it all off the commentators were, now brace yourself for this: Bob Kostas, Tiki Barber, Cris Colinsworth, and Keith Olbermun! Yes, that bunch of rejects, AND the OdorMan!

Go Chargers!

Hey shawn....

See you are not keeping up with the weekly games here...what happened?

LOL...

I know the Seahawks are playing the Steelers today..two of my fav's...but I am going to go with the Steelers today although either one is okay with me.

Then I see the Chargers and Broncos are playing...Go Chargers!

Jets and Giants...I hope the Giants win although I don't have a dog in this fight...Packers and Bears tonight....Da' Bears I hope....lol.

I haven't checked any of the rest quite yet...I am running behind at the moment.

catch ya all later....

good morning bt:-)

Your right I should be doing a better job keeping up on this thread. Lots of stuff going on at work.

Talk to you soon:)

Go Chargers!!!

Indeed BT and Shawn

I'm out to watch the game

Support our Troops

Another touch-down! I

Another touch-down!

I hope they keep this up...keeping my fingers crossed.

chargers, bears and niners and bengals

I picked these teams to win their divisions, the way things are going right now, they would be lucky to get a wild card. Oh well...we are only 5 games in. Time will tell.

Rivers did a GREAT job

Rivers did a GREAT job today along with the rest of the team...Tomlinson and Gates were in top form also.

Now if they just keep this up for the rest of the season...

Here's hoping...I always do.

BT

the Chargers are 2-3, they play the division leading Raiders 3-2 next week, with a win they will lead the division.  The season is by no means over and the Chargers have the talent.

Support our Troops

botg... Yeah I just heard

botg...

Yeah I just heard they play the Raiders next week...(I root for Raiders too, but the Chargers always come first in this case for me...lol)

Wow I just hope they stay hot and talented as they were today...I really enjoyed watching them today.

...as they say...time will tell.

Steelers really did the Seahawks in (which was kind of sad but expected), like I bet they would, and the Colts are still doing well too so it is going to be fun for me yet.

I hope 'da Bears win tonight just for the heck of it....

The AFC West

bigtimer, how can you root for more than one AFC West team?  Are you schizophrenic?

If it isn't Denver, I hold nothing but total hatred and contempt for teams in the AFC West.  (I remember so well living in Denver during Raider Week, when you could palpably feel the hatred for Los Angeles/Oakland/wherever the hell they move to next everywhere you went throughout CO...)

By the way, don't get me started on last Sunday.  Not even my family wants to mention it...(scowling)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

botg

I think the Raiders are 2-2 right now botg. They have some tough games coming up with two powerhouses from last yr. If Chicago wins tonight, they will have as much momentum as San Diego. I hope Daunte is up to the task.

How good are the Patriots right now? The Colts look great as well, but the Pats are making it look far too easy.

shawn

da Bears, what's up with them?  If they don't win tonight, they'll be in deep trouble.  And the Pack has been playing well this year, i don't think they are up with the Pats and Cowboys (next weeks GOTW) but da bears have their work cut out for them.

Support our Troops

botg

Packers up 14-7 at the present moment. Pats and Cowboys will be a barn burner. Speaking of the Cowboys, Romo is the real deal.
Moss vs Owens will also be interesting

17-7

and that's Owens vs Samuel and Harrison

Support our Troops

lol botg, I have to disagree

lol botg, I have to disagree there, I meant the battle of " touchdowns for egos" They have both been perfect team players this year, but If one gets shown up, I can see alot of yapping, especially from TO.

shawn

i think Randy's having a hard time keeping the ego up with the team around him, in fact here is a clip of him in the clubhouse
