Lots of political talk from the threads I created lately. Some of it has been great debate but some of it has been quite snarky.
I try to do a non political post once in a while and I hope this thread brings back good memories from the eightys. This is the decade that I went through high school. I remember high hair, hairspray, Reaganomics, Live Aid etc.
I will be adding to this thread from time to time on the OT. I hope everyone enjoys it.

March 31, 2008 - 00:39 ET by CortillaenMy two cents is that nothing from Pink Floyd is worth listening to. I know people who rave about them, but I just can't stand them. *shrugs* Instead, gimme anything by Billy Joel, and I'll be a happy man. Sure, his two best songs were in the 70s (Just The Way You Are and The Stranger), but his 80s stuff is still gold to me: An Innocent Man, The Longest Time, Keeping the Faith, Baby Grand, This Is the Time, I Go to Extremes, and And So It Goes. Next in line has to be Huey Lewis and The News, hands down. Some of My Lies Are True, Do You Believe in Love, I Want a New Drug, The Heart of Rock 'N Roll, The Power of Love, Back in Time, Perfect World, and Small World, Part 1. Oddly enough, only the last two in that list were released during my lifetime... Well, good music is good no matter when you hear it, I suppose.

So far I am only getting warmed up and lots of songs will be added to the OP very shortly.
Michael Jackson was like a music God in the eightys, how far we have fallen. All the actors from "The Outsiders" were on meteoric rise. ie Ralph Machio. Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane and Patrick Swayze.
Flashdance and Beverly Hills Cop were very successful as well.
I'm sure I forgot lots of songs, so I would appreciate any additions or even shared great or sad memories from the eightys.

I hate to do this, but for the first time I have to take a completely opposite opinion on something with you.
"Fire", for me, has to be one of the worst -- and most annoying -- non-songs ever! A low point in an otherwise decent Billy Joel career (not the biggest fan of him though...)
Now, maybe you're giving it merit on mainly it's lyrics, not the music. In that case, okay, it's not so bad :)

Heh, you're both plenty
March 31, 2008 - 01:07 ET by CortillaenHeh, you're both plenty older than me, and I still manage to wax nostalgic over songs from before I was born. Three decades (60s-80s) produced a staggering amount of incredible music. This page needs more classic Motown (that reminds me to go find my Spinners, Temptations, and Four Tops CDs), though... Since that would be a decade or two out of the 80s range, I suppose I'll just make do with Michael McDonald, who manages to capture that same feel in a lot of his music. I Heard It Through the Grapevine, I Keep Forgettin', Yah Mo B There, No Lookin' Back, and Sweet Freedom, plus Blink of An Eye (my favorite from him) if you don't mind breaking a bit into the 90s. Toto's also worth a mention, with Rosanna, Africa, I'll Be Over You, and Hold the Line (okay, that's actually from '78, but it's close). Other notables that I can remember of the top of my head are I'll Be There and Danger Zone from Kenny Logins and I Just Called to Say I Love You from Stevie Wonder.

The 1990s
March 31, 2008 - 04:02 ET by UnsaneIn October 1992, as I was walking down a street in San Antonio making my way from work to home, I was channel surfing on the Walkman (with a cassette player!!!), and heard "Pull Me Under" by Dream Theater for the first time. My world of music has not been the same since!
Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I was a devout headbanger and had NO TIME for Nirvana or any of those other weak bands (though I found some Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden to be of good quality). I went through a LONG "If it isn't Slayer, it SUCKS!" stage, and jammed out to bands of that nature.
The music scene of the 1990s just wasn't as rewarding, but then, once I got hold of Images and Words, my music tastes shifted hugely to progressive rock/metal. It has basically remained there almost without exception. The music I listen to isn't exactly mainstream, as a consequence.

April 2, 2008 - 11:09 ET by Roger the ShrubberHey Un, I knew alot of guys who went through that "if it ain't Slayer, it sucks" phase, too. There was that variant: "if it ain't Metallica, it sucks" group, too. I guess for a while I was in the "If it ain't Sabbath, it sucks" camp, haha.
In the 90's I was firmly in the "if it IS Nirvana, it sucks" group!

April 4, 2008 - 03:30 ET by UnsaneIn the 90's I was firmly in the "if it IS Nirvana, it sucks" group! Roger, a thousand or so miles away in southern TX, I was right there with you! To this day I cannot figure out the fascination with that grossly overrated group...
Back then I was indulging in Slayer (as noted), but also Megadeth, Metallica (though I consider the Black Album the beginning of their demise), Suicidal Tendencies, Queensryche, Testament, Primus, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, and other such bands (in no particular order). When Nirvana first came out my peers in high school could not figure out why I was so unimpressed with them.

April 4, 2008 - 07:53 ET by Roger the ShrubberUn, I figured you'd be big on Queensryche since you dig Dream Theater so much!
I remember the excitement of the monthly pilgrimage to downtown Pittsburgh on a Saturday morning to the local import record store to see what new records were released that week. I remember one late summer Saturday in '83 the guys that work there stuck an album in my face. Then, around Xmas '83 or so, we saw this album at the store. Sure, my friends and I were already listening to bands like Venom, Raven, Diamond Head, Scorpions, Priest, Maiden, etc, but man, those two albums sealed the deal for me.

Not the new, crappy pseudo-death, but the old-school stuff. Old 80's stuff, esp. European death metal.

The 1980s!
March 31, 2008 - 03:56 ET by UnsaneConsidering my growing up in the 1980s, I am very fond of that decade. Back when I was in first grade, my parents got me a turntable for Christmas which featured an AM/FM radio. Here I got to surf various radio channels with impunity, and since I had two older sisters (and my mother) who were very much into the music of the time, that didn't hurt.
Seriously, I distinctly remember some moments in first grade where I went to school with Journey stuck in my head because I heard them on the radio before I went to class (example). For another example, I remember mornings when I would hit my second grade class with songs by various artists reverberating through my head. It also didn't hurt that we got cable back then and I got to see my first music videos.
Keep posting, guys and gals. This thread is bringing back great memories.
I may be an unapologetic headbanger, but I have a major soft spot for the music of the 1980s. I was given vast amounts of grief for the music I have on my iPOD, but I don't care. I grew up with that music, and it is forever intertwined with great memories of my youth and formative years. When I get another moment, I'll go through the 80s artists I have on my iPOD and list them here for your perusal.

A bit of clarification
April 1, 2008 - 03:00 ET by UnsaneAlongside my metal I got TONS of 80s pop. To wit: the Ls on my iPOD begin with Lamb of God (Ashes of the Wake). The next name in that section? Laura Branigan. (I'm not ashamed to admit that I was thoroughly bummed when I heard she died.) What can I say? I couldn't get "Gloria" out of my head when I was in elementary school, and to make matters worse, my mother grabbed any album she came out with!
On a long flight, I took a LOT of heat for having 80s pop on the iPOD. I don't get it at all: stack typical 80s pop music against anything out today in that category and there is no comparison.
Due to the constraints of time, I will save my praise for good 80s metal some other time...but I WILL say this: my first honest-to-goodness metal album was one I got when I was 13: Appetite For Destruction by G 'n' R. Thus began one of my worst, most deplorable addictions...:-)

G-N-R
April 1, 2008 - 07:36 ET by RESTLESS 1See, another one I forgot. I'm not going to include the glam bands of the 80's, although I must admit, most had pretty decent musicians. I remember, some friends were heading to the coast when one of them puts that cassette in, and I couldn't turn it off. I borrowed that cassette for at least a month, avoiding said friend at all costs, lest I have to give it back.
I still think G-N-R could have been the greatest American band of all time if Axl could have kept it together.
Oh, and Unsane, I got where
April 1, 2008 - 07:45 ET by RESTLESS 1Oh, and Unsane, I got where you were going with the iPod story, but I must admit, if I saw you with Cindy Lauper coming out of your earphones, I would probably give you some grief too. ;>)

April 4, 2008 - 04:10 ET by Cool ArrowThere was some good in the '80's. Anything was welcome after that horrid age of Disco.
My favorite from the era, though they first hit big in 1978, was Dire Straits. Their soundtrack for "Local Hero" was pretty good too. (The movie, like Disco, sucked)

Thx Cool Arrow
April 4, 2008 - 09:09 ET by shawn228I'm glad you like it. I have Dire Straits money for nothing under the popular 80s song category. That video was one of the best made ever.

April 5, 2008 - 00:55 ET by shawn228was extremely annoying, but he helped launch some careers. This performance helped this artist get nationwide exposure, she had another memorable performance few yrs later as well

April 4, 2008 - 23:49 ET by tracheostomyHere's the animated movie intro* to one of the greatest syndicated 80s cartoons ever created (2:53-3:05 still makes me weep with joy).
The live-action feature is slated for 2009, but this version will always be my true love.
-PJ
*Unfortunately, this 3 min or so was the only good part of the animated movie.
>=( The TV series/comic book was much better.
