Sarcasm

Is it some kind of unspoken rule that intelligent people must resort to sarcasm as a form of intelligent response?
Every level of media from News commentators to night time comedians, from internet postings to paper published periodicals.
Even I am drawn into participation in this form of communication. And I must admit sometimes after I have participated I feel a sense of regret or remorse.
Is it necessary or are we just coming to the end of ourselves at communicating respectfully with one another?
I have been reviewing lots of old mags and newspaper clippings and compared to today's magazine and newspapers, sarcasm was limited to certain types of commentators who is seems couldn't rightly defend their argument so they resorted to sarcasm as a way to belittle the other persons view.
Today is seems as if it is just a normal way of communicating whether one has a correct or incorrect view on any subject. And for the most part I see used more often by people who would claim higher intelligence than most. It would be that those who would claim such higher knowledge would be the ones who for a standard should be the last to resort to such communication skills.
I for one would like to see Journalism in all forms, even in blog postings, go beyond this childish level of communicating.
Maybe Beck has a point. Is it possible we could Restore Honor to Journalism? Is it possible for us as individuals to step beyond the current sarcastic forms of Journalism and restore honor to this field of communication?
