Gov. Murkowski was not popular in AK, and even the Republicans knew that if he was left to run agains the popular former gov and mayor of Anchorage, Tony Knowles, Knowles would win. And that would be quite an accomplishment for a guy who never had beaten a Republican in a straight-up contest, not even against Lisa Murkowski (Frank's daughter, and how did she get that job? Daddy gave it to her...it was 100% legal in the AK Constitution to do so at the time, but so resented was the act, her Senate seat was in jeopardy.)
Did the AK Republicans (no open primary there: you have to register as a member of one of several parties to participate in the election) just whine and cry about how they would have to hold their nose and support Murkowski? NO. Enter the mayor of the Anchorage "suburb" of Wasilla, Sarah Palin. When primary time arrived, AK Republicans, seeing how Frank Murkowski was vulnerable, tossed him from office via the primary and backed Palin.
Even so, the pundits and Leftists were all crowing about how the governor's mansion belonged to Knowles. Weren't they shocked when Palin won! A rare highlight on a bleak election night.
Moral of the story: don't like your Republican/RINO candidate? There ARE things you can do, and alternative routes to getting what you want. AK demonstrated this, and Sarah Palin is a reminder of that fact.

Anyway, here is a link to Governor Palin's web-site commenting on the issue. She doesn;t seem to be a supporter of this, but she doesn;t seem to have much choice.
Here is one of her remarks about it: “The Department of Law advised me that this bill, HB4001, is
unconstitutional given the recent Court order of December 19th,
mandating same-sex benefits,” said Governor Sarah Palin. “With that in
mind, signing this bill would be in direct violation of my oath of
office.”
I'm not fan of granting same-sex partner benefits similar to married couples, but do you expect any governor to ignore their state Supreme Court?
