A question of Race?
Why is it that, almost without fail, biracial people identify themselves as black, when they are not identifing themselves as biracial?
Here are a couple of lists of famous people who had a black father and a white mother or a white father or a black mother.
Almost entirely do those on both lists identify themselves as black, when not (correctly, imo) identifing themselves as biracial.
Now why is that?
Has white society been unwilling to accept those of biracial descent claiming themselves to be white? I'm not talkin about during the less enlightened times of the past, but of the here and now whereby race is supposed to be a non issue. (and is for the most part imo, except when someone wants to make it an issue)
Is black society more willing to accept those of biracial descent claiming themselves to be black? (If this is true, is it do in part to the history of discrimination the black race has face in this country and thereby makes them more sympathetic to a biracial persons situation?)
If one places a high value on one's ethnic origins, how then can anyone of dual ethnic heritage possibly favor one over the other, given that both, obviously, are equally important to one's existence?
As a society have we been conditioned to view biracial people as whatever minority race is in their racial makeup? (Consider: President Obama is biracial, yet he's considered to be black.)
Does the "racist double standard" (i.e. It's OK to be black and proud, but if you are white and proud you are a racist) prevent serious discussion about this subject from taking place?
One of the few studies I've found addressing mixed race people can be found here. (Alas, they offer very little insight into the questions I am positing. However it is interesting none the less.)
These are just my intial questions on this subject. I'll edit and expand this topic as time goes on.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback on the questions I have posed above. Also, please feel free to offer any thoughts even remotely related to this subject and don't feel limited to just the topic I am posting about.
Thanks in advance to anyone who may respond and take care,
