George Will: A dreadful court ruling? Only during a campaign

A reasonable person might see habeas corpus as a legitimate constitutional topic.

The day after the Supreme Court ruled that detainees imprisoned at
Guantanamo are entitled to seek habeas corpus hearings, John McCain
called it "one of the worst decisions in the history of this country."
Well.

Does it rank with Dred Scott vs. Sanford (1857), which concocted a
constitutional right, unmentioned in the document, to own slaves and
held that black people have no rights that white people are bound to
respect? With Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896), which affirmed the
constitutionality of legally enforced racial segregation? With
Korematsu vs. United States (1944), which affirmed the wartime right to
sweep American citizens of Japanese ancestry into concentration camps?

The rest can be found at this link.

I'm sure most of you like George Will, but I'm wondering how many of you came to the same conclusions he did in this piece.

Show of hands?

I, for one, have never been a fan of George Will. Without going into specifics, I disagree with many of his conclusions; including this one.

Agreed Karma - George Will is way of base here

This decision broke on conservative/liberal lines and he acts like it's only a campaign issue for McCain. Bogus. Completely 100% Bogus. Obama said he agrees with it and he's not criticizing Obama as being political. Bogus. This column is completely Bogus.

Roberts, Scalia, Thomas and Alito are all more intelligent and familiar with Constitutional rights than Will is. He thinks because he agrees with liberals that every other conservative who doesn't is doing so because it's an election issue. Bogus. This column is really stupid.

Karma... I couldn't agree

Karma...

I couldn't agree more with your sentiments.

I also have never been a fan of George Will.

I'm surprised, I thought

I'm surprised, I thought most 'conservatives' liked George Will, but I guess that is a little bit of a stereotype, huh?

Unsane, I thought I had seen you quote Will before, what are your thoughts on this piece?

I don't listen to talking

I don't listen to talking heads exactly for this reason: because I don't care about their opinion.

Will's association of those other rulings is not what is important to me. What IS important is simply what McCain said. A man who was a POW for 5 years doesn't believe in Habeas Corpus (oh right, doesn't believe in it for enemy combatants). Tell that to other countries who capture U.S. soldiers during wartime. Please....

Camp Care Bear

Compared to how other countries treat U.S. service members in captivity, the United States is Camp Care Bear.

I'm all for giving POWs their Geneva Convention rights, but don't expect me to be thrilled with the prospect of Mirandizing them.  And you should be thankful.  During WWII, we wouldn't keep enemy combatants alive.  Depending on the situation, they would have bee shot long ago.
