I note that there are quite a few McCain supporters here (over 352 enthusiastically support in the poll)
Can you tell me why i as a conservative should vote for John McCain (of McCain-Kennedy and McCain-Fiengold fame)? I understand what he has said recently but it does not jive with what he has done, why should i believe him?
And please no flood posts a la Pop-Tech i really want a discussion not a link war

February 8, 2008 - 14:24 ET by NL207At this point, Ron Paul is the best of the remaining alternatives. At least he has a conservative economic agenda which will dominate his domestic policies in ways that I support.
I am most interested in what kind of SCOTUS nominees he might produce. I'd like to believe that he would choose strict constructionists who support limited government.

February 8, 2008 - 19:06 ET by NL207I agree. That is his downfall as a candidate. And I don't think you will like his immigration policy either. Most libertarians think it is pointless to defend borders against migrations.
Not that you'd know from the media-blackout
February 12, 2008 - 14:43 ET by sarcasmoBut on that issue the Republican-but-nobody-admits-it candidate broke from libertarians. Paul has consistently been for actually secure borders & no amnesty, unlike various irony-steeped "strong on national security" candidates...

I don't know that I could
February 12, 2008 - 17:41 ET by TeeDeeI don't know that I could give you a reason to vote for McCain, but mine is that he's not Hillary or Obama. I am a very disappointed Thompson supporter who couldn't find it in me to support anybody else once he dropped out, and I decided that I would vote for the nominee because I do not want either of the democrats to be CIC. I feel strongly that our right to vote includes our right to write a candidate's name in, vote third party, or to not vote for the presidential candidate. It is important to vote for the other races, however, and for that reason alone, one should not just stay home.

February 8, 2008 - 13:54 ET by Cool ArrowThere is only one reason to choose McCain over Hillary.
There is a chance McCain could be steered into nominating a Constitutionalist whereas Clinton would nominate deviant judges only.

February 8, 2008 - 14:01 ET by botgis very important to me and as i have said McCs pro-life stand may indicate appointing constructionists judges but his collusion with libs mitagates against it.
How can i trust McC to choose?

February 8, 2008 - 14:15 ET by Cool ArrowGiven the only difference between Hillary and McCain is McCain's pro life voting record, I feel I would be voting against my beliefs to choose Hillary, and sitting this election out is not an option either.
I'll hold my nose like McCain's momma.

February 8, 2008 - 15:30 ET by botgas i said before my alternative is the Constitution Party as a protest. That way i don't vote for a dem, i don't support a RINO, my vote can be seen by the republicans as a conservative base that they need to no longer take for granted.

Months and months of brain-washing.

February 8, 2008 - 18:42 ET by Jerry MackI do not trust him. McCain has got to do more than make a speech at Cpac to convince me that he has changed his positions on tax cuts and immigration. I would like to hear him say that he made mistakes. Not dance around it but actually say the words.
I do not know what I will do in November.

February 9, 2008 - 13:02 ET by botgthat's the reason for this forum, for the McCain backers to give the reasoning.
With about 400 votes for enthusiastically supporting McCain, I've yet to see the enthusiasm. Again my concerns are SCOTUS, immigration, Gitmo, Tax Cuts, ANWR, and his general 'maverick hothead' reputation.

February 11, 2008 - 22:23 ET by JayTeeYou're down to a Black kid that can't Hit, but he can Run, A Girl that can't swing a Bat..but she is a Bat....and A Giant Rhino who can pitch, but when he loses his temper he starts throwing wild.....Who you gonna Pick ?
I'll take the Pitcher who controls the Game, and Try and Control Him.

February 11, 2008 - 22:45 ET by JayTeeBotg, it's like I've been thru the Scenario the past few weeks...I don't like McCain, I like Mitt, and before him I liked Fred, and before them I voted for Perot, and Got Clinton.
I learned my lesson, and I ain't repeating it again.
Even Rush L. likes your reasoning.....But I'm not sure it's gonna work better than McCain now, and ??? later.....after all, it takes him out of the Senate, and it gives him Veto power over Pelosi and Reid. And after another 2 years of this Congress and thier approval ratings, Winning in Iraq is gonna Sweep them out, and sweep Republicans in under McCains feet, and put them to the fire.
The best McCain supporter
February 11, 2008 - 22:29 ET by botgthus far is Blonde, as she has made the best case I've seen here. Surely there must be reasons we can trust John on SCOTUS, BORDERS, ANWR, TAX-CUTS???

February 11, 2008 - 22:39 ET by Clear thinkerbotg... Here's another way of looking at it. I would much prefer that a Dem screws up the country for the next 4 years than have it blamed on a Republican.

We're Talking Politicians here OK
February 12, 2008 - 20:00 ET by JayTeeYou are Holding your Vote for a Politician that you just really Love..... ?
C'mon, We are talking Politicians here, nobody likes them, and half are on the take or under the control of some Lobbyist's influence and Money.
They're Bureaucrats and Politicians, and if you're waiting for a nice lovely Conservative to come along before you vote, you are just never gonna vote . . . Vote for the Best candidate of the lot, but don't stomp off and not vote because you haven't yet found an ass hole politician that you really really agree with on all issues.
That's Obama, and the people that love him......that's the Liberal emotional approach...."I'm not voting because my favorite person, Hillary, did not win...so I'm just not gonna vote at all" - - Liberal thinking all the way.
Vote on Principles, even if McCain only has 3 outta 5.
